Louisiana’s cities are full of fun, excitement, and wonder. On National Louisiana Day, I would like to share a little bit about this fascinating state. First, did you know it is a wonderful destination for family vacations? It is, thanks to the bustling streets of New Orleans, the history in Lafayette, and the sheer beauty of Baton Rouge. Of course, there are quite a few fun facts about Louisiana you may not know about. I am going to share a few of them with you today in hopes they will pique your interest. - The state of Louisiana doesn’t have counties like every other state. It has parishes instead.
- The legal system in Louisiana was influenced by the Spanish and French.
- One of the world’s rarest animals is the white alligator. It can be found in Louisiana.
- The Louisiana black bear is the official state mammal.
- The official state bird is the brown pelican.
- Famous people born in Louisiana include Reese Witherspoon, Tim McGraw, Bryant Gumbel, and Tyler Perry.
- It is illegal to tie your alligator to a fire hydrant in Louisiana.
- It is also illegal to make a phone call and then knowingly fail to hang the phone up.
- There have been many movies filmed in Louisiana. A couple of them include Crazy in Alabama, Fight Club, and The Apostle.
- Dolly Parton recorded her first single, Puppy Love, at the Goldband Records Studio in Lake Charles. She was thirteen years old at the time.
- Voodoo continues to be widely practiced in New Orleans.
- Louisiana’s state songs are You Are My Sunshine and Give Me Louisiana.
- There are no national parks in the state.
- There are fifty-four National Historic Landmarks in Louisiana. There is also one UNESCO World Heritage Site.
- Bonnie and Clyde, the infamous criminal couple, were killed in Bienville Parish.
- Tabasco Sauce was patented by the McIlhenny Company on Avery Island. This patent was one of the first in the state.
- Antoine Amadie Peychaud invented what is considered the very first cocktail in the US. He invented the Sazerac cocktail in New Orleans in 1850.
- Do you love to surprise your friends with pizza delivery without their knowledge? If you do that in Louisiana, you could be fined $500 according to local law!
- Oh, and don’t steal an alligator in Louisiana, either. If you do, you could be jailed for ten years.
