Are you trying to come up with empty nesters travel ideas for your next vacation? I could give you hundreds of exciting options. However, one of the highest-ranking options is a luxury safari for couples. A couple’s safari vacation will have you venturing out on adventures, while still enjoying downtime and a little romance. There are plenty of luxury safaris for couples to choose from. Today, I am sharing the best safari adventures for couples. Some of them will include exclusive safari experiences, which I can include in your itinerary as I plan your trip.

Best Safari Adventures for Couples: Luxury and Romantic Getaways for Empty Nesters

Serengeti, Tanzania

If you have heard about the Great Migration, you probably aren’t surprised to see Serengeti, Tanzania at the top of my list of best safari adventures for couples.

This African safari for couples’ option is one of the most famous safari destinations in the world. Especially when the Great Migration takes place. That is when millions of gazelles, wildebeest, and zebras thunder across the plains towards greener pastures.

It is quite the sight, and sound. Which is why so many empty nesters choose Serengeti for their safari vacation.

Imagine spending a week, or longer, viewing an abundance of wildlife. Seeing open landscape for miles. And all while staying in luxurious accommodations. That’s right… You won’t need to sacrifice comfort or luxury amenities while on a safari in Serengeti!

Of course, it won’t be all about wildlife during your empty nesters vacation. Enjoy a private bush dinner under the African night sky. Light from nearby lanterns will dance in the background, as you listen to the sounds of the wild in the distance.

Oh, and if you want to take your safari adventure to the next level, consider a hot air balloon safari. Yes, you will need to wake up early for this sunrise adventure. But all will be forgiven once you see the panoramic views, as the sun begins to light up the morning sky. Plus, you get a champagne breakfast at the end.

Check out these other amazing destinations for empty nesters searching for a little adventure.

Masai Mara, Kenya – One of the Best Safari Adventures for Couples

Best Safari Adventures for Couples: Luxury and Romantic Getaways for Empty Nesters - The Great Migration in Masai Mara in Kenya

Masai Mara is another one of the best safari adventures for couples. Numerous exclusive safari experiences are available when you choose a safari in Kenya. Especially when you decide to add authentic Maasai culture to your itinerary.

This area is another excellent destination for witnessing the Great Migration. The best time to visit for this magnificent sight is between the months of July and October.

One of the best features of safaris in Masai Mara is you can enjoy a crowd-free safari at one of the private conservancies. This is perfect if you are truly searching for some alone time during your empty nesters vacation.

A unique safari experience in Masai Mara includes a Maasai led walking safari. Instead of riding in a jeep or other vehicle, you will spend a few hours walking through the bush. During this time, you will learn about local traditions, as well as the wildlife living amongst the bush.

Another fascinating option is a helicopter ride. A helicopter will take you high above Masai Mara to see stunning views of the savanna. Don’t forget your camera for this adventure, because you will never see anything more breathtaking.

Ranthambore, India – Unique Safari Adventure for Couples

India is not the first destination many people think of when it comes to safari vacations. However, it should be at the top of your safari vacation list for couples if you want to see tigers in the wild.

Ranthambore National Park is full of ancient ruins and dramatic cliffs. And amongst those cliffs and ruins are tigers roaming in the wild. I recommend allowing me to schedule a private Jeep safari while visiting this park. This ensures you receive a private guided tour to search for the Bengal tigers. Plus, you’ll be able to ask more questions without being interrupted by other visitors.

When you are not exploring the park, you can visit nearby temples and forts. This will give you a well-rounded vacation filled with adventure and history.

Empty nesters can rediscover their wild side while vacationing in these incredible destinations.

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Uganda

Best Safari Adventures for Couples: Luxury and Romantic Getaways for Empty Nesters - Gorillas in Uganda

Gorilla trekking safaris are slightly different than other safaris around the world. On these best safari adventures for couples, you will see mostly endangered mountain gorillas. This is one of the safaris you should consider if you love gorillas and don’t mind missing out on seeing the Big Five.

During this couple’s safari vacation, you will discover a deep connection with nature. Especially if you take a private gorilla trekking tour of the rainforest. These private tours will take your safari experience to the next level.

Of course, you don’t need to skip romance and downtime when on your safari vacation. I recommend adding a forest spa treatment to your itinerary. Most of the treatments take place in a lodge that overlooks the rainforest.

And at night, relax by the fire, as you sip on a glass of wine and talk about the adventures of the day.

Okavango Delta, Botswana

You won’t see the Big Five during a safari in the Okavango Delta. However, you will discover elephants, hippos, crocodiles, and too many bird species to count.

This exclusive safari experience will have you riding in a traditional mokoro, which is a dugout canoe. The mokoro will take you along the winding channels of the delta for a peaceful safari experience.

At the end of the day, relax and drink champagne on a sunset boat cruise. All while watching elephants wade through the water nearby. Then take an outdoor bath before going to sleep under the stars on your rooftop bed.

My travel tips for couples vacationing as empty nesters.

Sabi Sands, South Africa

The last of the best safari adventures for couples is Sabi Sands in South Africa. This area is next to Kruger National Park. And it is one of the best places to see lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, and buffaloes. Basically, the Big Five everyone wants to see when they decide to take a safari vacation.

Off-road driving is popular in Sabi Sands. While you can venture out in groups, I highly recommend the private game drives. This ensures you spend time in areas you want to and move on when you are ready to see something different.

Many of the luxury lodges in Sabi Sands offer spa treatments, private decks, infinity pools, and candlelit dinners under the stars.

Check out the other reasons why you should embrace empty nesters travel.

Has your family always wanted to head out into the great outdoors in search of wildlife in Tanzania? Well, you can do just that during a wildlife safari in Tanzania! There are plenty of tour options available for this wildlife safari. However, one of my personal favorites is ten days long. Those ten days are the perfect amount of time to see wildlife, explore nature, and spend time making memories with your family. Today, I am going to share a potential trip itinerary for a wildlife safari in Tanzania. You may love everything within this itinerary or you may prefer to have me personalize this trip even more for your family. Either option will have you enjoying your time in Tanzania during a family vacation.

Wildlife Safari in Tanzania for Your Family Vacation

A professional guide will be in charge of your wildlife safari in Tanzania. They will take you to areas like Lake Manyara, Serengeti National Park, and the Ngorongoro Crater. Your guide will provide everything you need for a day out in the bush, as you search for the wildlife that is native to the land.

Day One: Arusha

The first day of your exciting wildlife safari in Tanzania will begin with you arriving at the Kilimanjaro International Airport. A private car will meet you to whisk you away to your accommodations for the evening. After a delicious dinner in Arusha, you can walk around or head to bed early in preparation for the next day.

Day Two: Tarangire National Park

Your family will be thrilled to be heading out to Tarangire National Park early in the morning. This area of Tanzania is where large numbers of elephants live. They get most of their water from the Tarangire River, which runs through the park.

During your visit, you will also see hundreds of Baobab trees. Keep your eyes open when you are near those trees. You never know when you will spot one of the tree climbing African pythons in one of them. Those snakes can startle you when you least expect it!

Day Three: Lake Manyara National Park

Wildlife Safari in Tanzania for Your Family Vacation - Lake Manyara

Everyone will be more than ready for an adventure inside Lake Manyara National Park on day three of your family vacation. This may be a small park, especially since the lake takes up most of it. However, there are plenty of animals to see during your game drive.

As you are being driven through this park, your guide will point out all the giraffes, elephants, buffalo, warthogs, zebras, and baboons. You may even be one of the lucky few to spot a tree climbing lion. Take a moment at the hippo pool to stretch your legs and take pictures to capture the beauty that surrounds you.

Day Four: Ngorongoro Crater

The fun will seem like it will never end on this wildlife safari in Tanzania! Day four will bring your family to the Ngorongoro Crater. This crater has earned the nickname, Africa’s Eden, thanks to the thirty thousand plus animals that live there.

You won’t be alone when you visit Ngorongoro Crater with your guide. Thousands of people travel to see this crater every year. This isn’t surprising since it is considered the Eighth Natural Wonder of the World.

When you reach the rim of the crater, you will see lions sleeping peacefully, as zebras and wildebeests graze nearby. You probably won’t arrive to see the black rhinos grazing, as they head into the forest as soon as the sun rises completely.

The highlight of your visit will be seeing the tall Maasais herding their cattle and goats. These people live amongst all the wildlife, as their ancestors had for many centuries.

Day Five: Serengeti National Park

On day five of your family vacation, you will wake up early. Your family will be more than ready to make the drive to Serengeti National Park. The drive will take some time, so plan on eating your packed lunch along the way. Don’t worry, you will arrive at Serengeti National Park before the sun sets. So, you will have ample time to see some of the animals before heading to your accommodations for the evening.

Can’t travel to Tanzania yet? Check out these safaris in the US

Days Six and Seven: Serengeti National Park

Yes, you will have two more full days to spend inside Serengeti National Park. I recommend heading out on the early game drive to experience the sunrise in the park. A lot of the wildlife will be out and about before the heat of the day. Then take advantage of the mid-day game drive and evening drives if you want to get the most out of this wildlife safari experience.

Day Eight: Lake Natron

Your family won’t be happy about leaving Serengeti National Park so soon, but it will be time to drive to Lake Natron. Your adventures today will take you to waterfalls, a gorge, the Ngarasero Escarpment, and the Oldonyo Lengai. This last one is an active volcano.

At one point during the day, you will find yourselves walking to the waterfalls and going for a swim.

Day Nine: Lake Natron

Because one day is simply not enough at Lake Natron, your family will spend the morning on day nine there as well. Watching the sun come up over the lake is quite a sight, so wake up early to catch all the action. Check out the flamingos on the lake one last time before climbing into the vehicle to ride back to Arusha.

Day Ten: Arusha

Your ten-day wildlife safari in Tanzania will officially be over when you wake up on this day. Thankfully, you will have a little time to do a little shopping before heading back to the airport to return home.

This is only one of many itineraries available for a wildlife safari in Tanzania. If you think your family will love going on an adventure like this, I can personalize an itinerary that fits your needs.

Two of the best places to head out on safari are Serengeti National Park and Masai Mara National Reserve. Serengeti is located in Tanzania, while Masai Mara can be found in Kenya. Many families like yours travel to these areas during the Great Wildebeest Migration. This is when millions of wildebeests, zebras, elands, and gazelles move from one area to another in search of water and greener pastures. During a Serengeti and Masai Mara safari, you can see this migration take place firsthand. And if you miss the action, there is still plenty to see during a family vacation while out on safari. Today, I am sharing some of the possibilities when you choose a Serengeti and Masai Mara safari for your family vacation.

Serengeti and Masai Mara Safari Family Vacation

Day One: Tarangire National Park

On the very first day of your Serengeti and Masai Mara safari adventure, you will arrive in Arusha. Upon your arrival, you will be taken straight to Tarangire National Park. This park only has one source of water, which is the Tarangire River.

Lots of elephants live within this park. You will often find them down by the river. It is also possible to spot giraffes, bushbucks, and hartebeests. If you see those animals, be prepared for lions and leopards to be close by.

Day Two: Tarangire National Park

You can’t spend just part of a day in Tarangire National Park, which is why day two is also dedicated to this area. The entire day will be spent out on a game drive throughout the park. You will even eat lunch inside the park, so you don’t miss a moment of the action.

Day Three: Ngorongoro Crater

Your family won’t want to leave Tarangire National Park, but there is so much more waiting for you all on this Serengeti and Masai Mara safari. Day three will have you arriving at the Ngorongoro Crater. Imagine the memories your family will make at this geographical wonder.

So many animals live within this massive crater. Keep your eyes open so you don’t miss any of the wildebeests, gazelles, zebras, and other animals. Most of your day will be spent driving down into and through the crater.

Day Four: Serengeti National Park

Serengeti and Masai Mara Safari Family Vacation - Cheetah in Serengeti National Park

On day four of your family vacation, it will finally be time to venture over to Serengeti National Park. The route your family takes will have you seeing the Olduvai Gorge. This is one of the most important paleoanthropological locations in the entire world. Once you have seen sections of the gorge, it will be time to enter the park.

Serengeti National Park is one of the oldest ecosystems in the world. An abundance of wildlife can be seen within this park in Tanzania. If you managed to time your family vacation just right, you may be able to watch part of the Great Migration. If not, you will still have an excellent chance of seeing plenty of animals.

Day Five: North Serengeti National Park

The Great Migration takes place in North Serengeti National Park, which is known as Wagakuria. The game drive on this day will follow this route. Part of your day will be spent near the Mara River. Just keep an eye out for the Nile crocodiles that reside there. They can be quite active if other animals are nearby.

Day Six and Seven: North Serengeti National Park

Since one day in Serengeti National Park is never enough, this tour offers two more days. Both days will be spent on full-day game drives. This is wonderful news because you never know what wildlife you will see each day.

Day Eight: Masai Mara National Reserve

Your family won’t know whether they should be sad they are leaving Serengeti National Park today or happy because they are finally going to get to see the Masai Mara National Reserve. This is a long drive, so use the time to take a nap in between sightseeing.

Want to skip Serengeti National Park and simply visit Masai Mara? Check out this Masai Mara safari itinerary

Day Nine, Ten, and Eleven: Masai Mara National Reserve

Serengeti and Masai Mara Safari Family Vacation - Lion in Masai Mara in Kenya

Yes, you are seeing that right! Your family gets to spend three full days doing game drives in the Masai Mara National Reserve! If you arrive in this area between the months of July and October, you will see millions of wildebeests, gazelles, and zebras migrating between Serengeti and Masai Mara.

Your family will also spot cheetahs, African bush elephants, lions, and African leopards during these drives. You are welcome to skip one of the game drives if you wish. However, be prepared to learn you missed something incredible during the time you stayed behind.

Day Twelve: Nairobi

You will have just enough time to go for a quick game drive early in the morning before it is time to go back to Nairobi and your flight home.

I can easily create a different itinerary for your family if you are interested in going out on safari in either Serengeti National Park or Masai Mara National Reserve. All you need to do is tell me what you want to see and do during your family vacation safari in Africa.

As a family travel expert, I enjoy creating all-inclusive luxury safari packages for my clients. In the past, I have teamed up with reputable companies who have created their own luxury safari packages for other travelers. I continue to use what I have learned from working with these other companies to ensure the safari packages I create for my clients are the best available. If you have never planned an amazing luxury Tanzania safari for a family vacation, I recommend you put it at the top of your list. There is nothing better than being out in the middle of nowhere, enjoying nature and wildlife in their natural habitats. At least, I thought so when I took a couple of my kids to Kenya for a safari a few years ago!

Plan an Amazing Luxury Tanzania Safari for Your Family Vacation

Expert guides will take you on drives through some of the favorite national park safaris in Tanzania during this family vacation adventure. You will learn quite a bit about wildlife, as well as each national park, as you spend time with your loved ones. This is the time to make magical memories with each family member as you see incredible sights few other people have had the opportunity to check out.

Can’t make it to Tanzania for a safari? Check out these safaris right here in the United States.

Highlights of an Amazing Luxury Tanzania Safari include:

  • Tarangire National Park
  • Lake Manyara National Park
  • Ngorongoro Crater
  • Serengeti National Park
  • Nungwi Coast

Day One: Arusha

The first day of your luxury Tanzania safari will be a busy one. You will fly into the Kilimanjaro/Arusha airport. Upon your arrival, you will be picked up by a private driver and whisked away to your accommodations. Your family will feel like VIPs right from the start of this safari adventure!

Day Two: Arusha to Tarangire National Park

You will need to get up slightly early on day two of this fabulous safari adventure. After a delicious breakfast, you will be taken to Tarangire National Park. This park offers the only water in the area to the wildlife during the dry season.

Your family will want to spend a good portion of the day down by the river. The reason for this is many of the elephant families within the park spend their time at the river. Don’t forget about the hartebeest, giraffe, and bushbuck that live inside this national park, though. They are all worthy of a few photos too.

Your guides will help you capture perfect pictures while they keep an eye out for lions and leopards lurking nearby.

It will be a full day of adventures on this game drive, so you will sleep well at your accommodations on night two!

Day Three: Tarangire National Park to Lake Manyara National Park

After an excellent night’s sleep, your family should be raring to go as you head out to Lake Manyara National Park on day three. This is one of my favorite places to visit because you can see tree-climbing lions.

During your family’s game drive, you will see so much more than those lions, though. Amongst all the savannah and evergreen forests, you will spot wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, elephant, and giraffe. In between sightings, talk about all the special things you are seeing as you make memories together.

Plan an Amazing Luxury Tanzania Safari for Your Family Vacation - Tree Climbing Lion

Day Four: Lake Manyara National Park to the Ngorongoro Crater

The Ngorongoro Crater was created more than two or three million years ago. A massive volcano exploded before collapsing onto itself. The result is this geographical delight.

One of the best parts of this luxury Tanzania safari will be the adventure your family will have driving down to the crater floor. Once you reach the inner depths of the crater, you will be amongst tons of wildlife.

To start, try to see how many of the five hundred different bird species you can spot. Then focus on the gazelle, zebra, and wildebeest roaming around. One of the more elusive animals within the Ngorongoro Crater is the endangered black rhino. Not everyone gets to see this creature up close, but you may have a chance during your luxury safari vacation.

Days Five and Six: Serengeti National Park

One of the best places to go on safari in Tanzania is Serengeti National Park. At this point, you might think your family will be getting bored with exploring national parks. However, your arrival in Serengeti National Park will have you all saying WOW!

This park is one of the oldest ecosystems on Earth. It is also the oldest national park in Tanzania. This practically untouched park is absolutely breathtaking.

If you time your luxury Tanzania safari family vacation just right, you may get to capture a glimpse of the Great Migration. This is when all the wildebeests, along with gazelle and zebra, move across the park in search of fresh grazing areas. If you happen to hear thundering hooves during your visit, you will know that large numbers of animals are moving in.

Days Seven through Nine: Serengeti National Park to the North Coast of Zanzibar

Right after breakfast on day seven of your family vacation, everyone will board a plane to fly to Zanzibar. The coast of Zanzibar is known as Nungwi. The entire coastline is full of bright white coral sand that seems to glow when the sun goes down.

Your last days of safari can be spent on the soft sand or out in the sparkling water. The reefs right off the coast are perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and parasailing. Your family may even want to take a sunset cruise one evening.

If everyone prefers to stay on land, there are walking tours that share details of this beautiful area.

Day Ten: Airport to Travel Home

On the last day of your luxury Tanzania safari, you will be transported back to the airport to begin your journey home. This will have been a whirlwind adventure full of memory-making moments that your family will remember forever.

So, are you ready to plan your own luxury Tanzania safari for your next family vacation?
