Travel in Australia: Family Vacation Transportation Options

Plane Travel in Australia

Flying is the best way to discover different areas of Australia in the shortest amount of time. There are multiple airlines to choose from for your travel in Australia. However, the main ones are currently Qantas and Virgin Australia. Both these airlines fly into every capital city. Only Qantas flies into most of the major rural hubs. But you can reach a few of them via Virgin Australia.

The length of the flights your family takes will be dependent on where you are flying to. Flights between Sydney and either Melbourne or Brisbane are only approximately an hour and a half. It can take five hours to fly to Perth from Sydney, though.

Car

Driving a rental car is an excellent way to see more of Australia during your travels. You do need to have more vacation time available if you choose this option. Unless you only focus on one section of the country.

Most of the roads in Australia are well-maintained. And traffic isn’t too bad on many of the highways. It is only when you reach the bigger cities that you will find traffic jams and headaches.

The weather in Australia can be unpredictable at times. So, it is important that you check the weather before venturing out for a drive.

This is especially true if you are headed into the outback, where cell services and other amenities are few and far between. I also recommend making sure you pack all the essentials in the car for your road trip. I can help you with a list of things your family will need.

Check out all the different states of Australia to see where you should spend your family vacation. 

Bus

Public transportation in Australia is plentiful. Yes, you will find buses in the larger cities. But you will also find buses that will take you from one destination to another when you travel in Australia.

There are a couple of different bus companies to choose from. The only downside to taking the bus in Australia is there are multiple stops before you reach your destination.

The good news is that you can easily look out the window at the scenery and simply relax until you reach your own stop.

Train Travel in Australia

There are two incredible luxury rail journeys to consider for your family travel in Australia. The first is the Ghan, which runs from Adelaide to Darwin. It takes three days to complete this route, and there are stops filled with excursions along the way.

The other rail journey in Australia is the Indian Pacific train. That train goes from Sydney to Perth and takes four days.

There are other trains that go between many of the major cities in Australia. The insides of those trains are slightly dated, but they are a good option if your family wants a new adventure while on vacation.

Ferry

The ferry should be your method of choice when traveling to the island within Australia. The Spirit of Tasmania can transport your family to Tasmania for the day or an entire week.

And if you are looking to visit Kangaroo Island, the SeaLink ferry is ready to transport you.

There are other ferries in Australia. Most of those will take you around the Swan River, Brisbane River, or the neighboring suburbs in the city of Sydney.

Hiking

There are numerous places to hike or simply walk when you are on a family vacation in Australia.

I recommend walking around the major cities, when possible because you avoid the need for transportation altogether. And when you are away from the cities, your family may want to tackle a few of the popular hiking trails. Overland Track and the Larapinta Trail are two of the favorites.

As you are choosing your method of travel in Australia, you will want to keep in mind how massive this country truly is. Australia is almost three million square miles. This equates to approximately ten times the size of the state of Texas.

There is one road called Highway 1 that goes around the outer edge of the mainland. That highway is almost fifteen thousand miles long. And it can take hours to drive from one major city to another in this country.

However, the sheer size of Australia should never deter you from taking a family vacation there. This is a travel bucket list item that everyone wants to check off sooner than later. I simply recommend that we plan your visit carefully and choose the methods of travel that will allow your family to see as much of the country as possible.

The States of Australia – Which is Best for Your Family Vacation

There are six states within the country of Australia. You have probably heard of states like Queensland and Tasmania. However, Victoria and New South Wales may not be on your radar. Each one of these states offers something unique. Therefore, you will want to choose the states of Australia you visit according to the activities your family would love to do the most.

New South Wales – Most Visited State of Australia

Sydney is one of the major cities found within the New South Wales state of Australia. This is the area of Australia most people visit for many reasons. The main reason is there is an international airport located in Sydney.

Most families like yours cannot resist the popular attractions and soft sandy beaches. Of course, the ability to check a destination off their travel bucket list is another reason.

Your days in New South Wales can include hiking to the waterfalls in the Blue Mountains. Enjoying leisurely lunches after shopping in the city.

Spending time at the beach is a must. There are so many best family beaches in Australia.

But so is wine tasting at one of the local vineyards. Of course, you should also check out the Sydney Opera House, St Mary’s Cathedral, Powerhouse Museum, and Hyde Park.

If your family loves thrills, I can schedule a time to climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge as well.

Queensland

Queensland is the second most popular state in Australia when it comes to family vacations. While there are many bustling cities to explore, your family may prefer to spend their time exploring lush rainforests or the Great Barrier Reef.

Two amazing areas of Australia to explore while in Queensland are the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast. A must-do island hopping adventure in Australia includes sailing over to the Whitsunday Islands.

There are also international airports in this part of the country. So, if your family wants to avoid the touristy sights of Sydney, you may prefer the down under experience Queensland has to offer.

Snorkeling, diving, or taking a boat ride near the Great Barrier Reef is an excellent way to spend a few days as a family in Queensland. The Skyrail Rainforest Cableway will offer unique views of this area of Australia from a different vantage point.

Other family adventures you may want to include on your travel itinerary are exploring the Capricorn Caves, hiking to Josephine Falls, and checking out the crocs at Australia Zoo.

South Australia

If your family wants to escape the big city for a few days or even a few weeks, South Australia will have exactly what you want. The coastal regions lead directly to the outback. Exciting family adventures are everywhere in this state of Australia.

In Adelaide, you can taste some fine wines. Over on Kangaroo Island, you can hang out with the wildlife. And if a road trip sounds like the perfect way to spend time with your kids, the Great Ocean Road will be waiting for you.

When your family is not at a local beach or in the middle of the outback, you may find yourselves shopping at the Adelaide Central Market. At the Old Timers Mine, you will all get your history lesson for the day. However, you may prefer spending the day with the dolphins at the Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary.

Tasmania

You must leave the mainland when you decide to spend part of your family vacation in Tasmania. But the extra travel to this state of Australia is worth it. Thanks to the fact that more than forty percent of the island is protected land.

When you are not reconnecting with each other in nature, your family can spend time participating in the area’s diverse culture. This island definitely has a laidback vibe. Your family will want to take advantage of that during your visit.

Of course, you won’t want to hang around at the beach all day! You can visit quirky museums. Take long walks while visiting with the wildlife. And even play some golf on a world-class course.

Just make sure you take the time to check out the Spiky Bridge, Henty Dunes, and the White Knights of Evercreech. Hiking to Dip Falls is also a must when you are on a family vacation in Tasmania.

Consider these other epic island vacations for your next family trip. 

Victoria

Diversity is everywhere in the Victoria state of Australia. Whether you are talking about the coastline, rainforests, and ski areas or the history, food, and culture. It will all have you wondering what you could possibly discover next.

This area of Australia is where you will find the city of Melbourne. As well as part of the Great Ocean Road and the Mornington Peninsula.

You can spend your day exploring the 12 Apostles, Royal Botanic Gardens, or Queen Victoria Market. However, the kids may prefer to try to strike it rich while panning for gold at Sovereign Hill.

Shopping while wandering around the city laneways is also popular with the younger crowd. If you really want to get everyone’s heart racing, you can always check out the city from the Melbourne Skydeck.

Western Australia – Least Visited State of Australia

Western Australia is the largest state of Australia. It covers approximately one-third of the entire country.

A family vacation in this area of Australia can have you exploring for days and still not seeing everything you should. Some of the best Australian landscapes can be seen in Western Australia. And you won’t want to miss any of them.

I recommend you begin with the ancient Aboriginal sites and work your way toward the water.

Your family will want to swim with the whale sharks over at Ningaloo Reef. Then you can hang out with the quokkas on Rottnest Island. Make sure you grab some family photos to remember these memories you are making!

Checking out the planes at the Aviation Heritage Museum can be fun. But not as exciting as exploring Mammoth Cave.

And you know you won’t forgive yourself if you don’t get a family photo under the Dave Evans Bicentennial Tree.

These are the six states of Australia, and only you will know which ones you should visit for your next family vacation. Most families will choose one or two of the states to explore. But you can choose as many as you like. Consider a 15 Day Australia and New Zealand Vacation 

Day One: Sydney, Australia 

On the first day of your Australia and New Zealand vacation, you will fly into Sydney, Australia. This day will be spent getting acclimated to the city. I suggest walking around the neighborhoods near your hotel. Then check out some of the more popular attractions in Sydney.  You may even want to relax at Bondi Beach. It is one of the best beaches in Australia. 

Day Two: Sydney, Australia 

A hike in the Blue Mountains will keep you busy on day two of your family vacation in Australia. Your hike begins at Calmsley Hill to see the kangaroos, koalas, wombats, and emu. From there, you can snap pictures at Eaglehawk Lookout, Evans Lookout, and Govetts Leap.  

Before you head back to your hotel, you must stop at the Blue Mountains Botanic Gardens. It is one of the best places to see the ancient Wollemi Pine.  

Day Three: Cairns, Australia 

Day three is a travel day. You will fly from Sydney to Cairns. I can arrange for you to stay in a hotel right in the heart of the city. This will ensure you can see all the popular sights.  

Day Four: Great Barrier Reef, Australia 

One of the best things to do during an Australia vacation is visiting the Great Barrier Reef. And today, you can do just that!  

I can arrange for a glass bottom boat tour or a snorkeling session for viewing marine life. If you really want to experience the Great Barrier Reef in a unique way, let me suggest the semi-submersible reef viewer or a stop at the underwater observatory.  

Day Five: Fitzroy Island, Australia 

Head away from the mainland today and explore Fitzroy Island. You must take the ferry to and from this island. Take a hike on the trails to explore the island. Or head into the water to swim and snorkel with the turtles.  

At the end of this day, the first part of your Australia and New Zealand vacation will be coming to an end. Day six will bring new adventures in a new country!

Day Six: Queenstown, New Zealand 

Another travel day will be needed to fly from Australia to Queenstown, New Zealand. It is finally time for the next part of your Australia and New Zealand vacation with the family.  

Spend your day relaxing in your room, as you enjoy the mountain and lake views. Or venture out to start exploring the city. The choice is always yours. Simply do what you know will make your family happy, as you all make those memories that matter.  

Day Seven: Queenstown, New Zealand 

The entire family will love jumping on an ATV to head out on a safari during your family vacation in New Zealand. This guided tour will allow you to explore Queenstown Hill. You can go off-roading on the various trails to see the sheep in their natural habitats.  

If you are not too tired at the end of the day, take a cruise on Lake Wakatipu. You can choose a simple evening cruise or one that includes dinner at Walter Peak.  

Day Eight: Milford Sound, New Zealand 

Experiencing Milford Sound is a daylong adventure. Your tour guide will share information about the history and sights you see along Milford Road. This road follows the shores of Lake Wakatipu. You will eventually find yourselves in Fiordland National Park.  

A boat ride on the fjord is the perfect way to end this long journey. During your boat ride, you will have the opportunity to see waterfalls, dolphins, penguins, and fur seals.  

Day Nine: Mount Cook 

You may want to wake up early this morning to squeeze in a little extra time in Queensland before making the drive to Mount Cook. During the journey, you will pass AJ Hackett Bridge Bungy. This is the World’s Home of the Bungy. The kids are probably going to want to get your heart racing, as they decide they are going to make the leap.  

Once you can move again, continue driving to the town of Cromwell, the town of Omarama, and eventually Mount Cook National Park. If you are feeling ambitious, hike along the trails to one of the fifteen peaks inside this park. These are some of the best hikes in New Zealand. 

Day Ten: Mount Cook 

After your drive on day nine of your family vacation in New Zealand, you will be more than ready for a glacier boat ride. During this family adventure, you will spend a couple hours getting up close to the Tasman Glacier icebergs.  

Day Eleven: Punakaiki 

Day eleven is a day of travel, as you go from Mount Cook to Punakaiki. Remember, all amazing things are worth the wait, or in this case, the journey. Your accommodations in Punakaiki are close to Paparoa National Park, which is where you will see the Punakaiki Pancake Rocks and Blowholes. You may even want to spend a little time on a nearby beach.  

Day Twelve: Nelson 

Sleep in a little bit this morning if you want, so you are well rested for the journey to Nelson. You will probably need the extra sleep at this point of your amazing family vacation in both Australia and New Zealand.  

Day Thirteen: Nelson and Abel Tasman 

Your family will be more than ready to head out on the water today for a kayaking adventure. It is difficult to share what you will see during this adventure, because the tours are designed around the tides each day. So, you may not have any idea which direction you are headed until you arrive and speak to your guide.  

Day Fourteen: Auckland 

I recommend flying out of Nelson to Auckland early on this day, so you can spend more time in this vibrant city. After all, your Australia and New Zealand vacation is close to the end. There are so many popular attractions in Auckland. You may have difficulty finding the time to see them all.  

Start with the Auckland Waterfront, Princess Wharf, Wynyard Quarter, and Queen Street.  

Day Fifteen: Auckland 

While you may have flown into Auckland early on day fourteen, I am hopeful you will want to arrange for a later flight from Auckland to home. This will allow you to see some more of this city, as you make one or two more memories with your family.

Best Ways to Travel in New Zealand 

Plane 

Okay, so we both know that your family will need to take a plane to reach New Zealand. However, planes can be an option depending on where you are traveling in this country. If you decide you want to visit both the North and South Islands, a plane is your best option.  

I also recommend flying when you are traveling long distances in this country. It really beats sitting in a car for hours at a time.  

Rental Car 

One of the best ways to travel in New Zealand is by rental car. Having access to a car will allow you to go wherever you want at any time. You can use the car for day trips. Or you can use it to travel from one destination to the next. No matter what is on your list of best things to do in New Zealand, you can check it off when you have a rental car. 

Since you will have this car for the entire trip, you won’t need to unload it every single day. You can leave items you may need each day during your outings in the car instead of taking it all into your accommodation every night. The best part is you won’t forget those items every morning when you head out for the day.  

Bus 

The bus in New Zealand is a national coach service called InterCity. This is the best public transportation option to get to and from attractions. You can also use the bus to go from one city to the next. The best part is you won’t need to do the driving. So, you can enjoy the scenery so much more.  

The downside to using the bus is you won’t have as much flexibility. Taking luggage on the bus can be a pain too.  

Guided Bus Tours 

A guided bus tour may be the option that suits your family. You get to see specific destinations that are pre-arranged. A driver will take you to them all, as a tour guide shares information about everything you are seeing. You won’t need to do any driving and deal with the stress of that.  

The only downside to taking a guided bus tour is you don’t get to plan the schedule. You can only spend a certain amount of time in each place. You can’t stay longer if you are having an amazing time. And you can’t leave early if you are bored out of your mind.   

Train 

The train routes in New Zealand are limited. So, it is not the best way to travel in the country. However, it is an option for certain travel plans. I usually will recommend the train if you want an easy way to get between Christchurch and Greymouth. Another fun train ride goes between Wellington and Auckland.  

So, if you are traveling between those areas, want to check out the scenery, and have the ability to stretch your legs, the train is the way to go.

Best Beaches in Australia 

Bells Beach in Queensland 

Bells Beach is one of the best beaches in Australia for surfing. This beach is located on Victoria’s Great Ocean Road, which is down the road from Torquay. The waves at this beach can be challenging. If they seem too rough, sit on the sand and watch the pros have a little fun. I recommend visiting during the month of April when the surfers all compete at the Rip Curl Pro Bell.  

Bondi Beach in Sydney 

Bondi Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Australia. Since it is in Sydney, lots of the locals from the city spend their time there. When you are not surfing, you can take Bondi to Congee Walk. This three-and-a-half-mile scenic walk will take you to other beaches and cliffs. You may find one that will be perfect for your next beach day.  

Turquoise Bay in Western Australia 

The turquoise water of the ocean will be waiting for you when you arrive at Turquoise Bay. This beach in Australia is where you will find the Ningaloo Reef. Swimming and snorkeling are two of the most popular activities at this best beach in Australia.  

I recommend snorkeling when the tide is high, so you can see lots of marine life.  

Hyams Beach in Jervis Bay 

So many of the beaches on the north coast of Australia get really crowded. If you want to spend a day without a ton of people, head south to Hyams Beach. This beach has the whitest sand in the world. Walk along the sandy shoreline to see if you can spot any dolphins out in the water. You may even spot a kangaroo or two while walking the trails within Jervis Bay Marine Park.  

Cable Beach in Broome 

One of the best places to play beach volleyball is Cable Beach in Broome. The highlight of a visit to this Australian beach, though is the sunset camel rides. Talk about a unique experience your family will talk about for years!  

Whitehaven Beach in Whitsunday Islands 

Whitehaven Beach is the best beach to visit in Australia when you want to be really close to the Great Barrier Reef. This beach is four miles long and offers views of Whitsunday Islands National Park. This beach is isolated and may be difficult to find. It is best to have straightforward directions before heading out in the morning.  

Paradise Beach in Coral Bay 

This beach is a marine lovers’ paradise. There are coral gardens scattered around near the sandy beach. The Ningaloo Reef is only feet from the shoreline. It is possible to swim with whale sharks, manta rays, and humpback whales while visiting this beach. Just remember to give them their space and never approach or touch them.  

Cottesloe Beach in Perth 

One of the best places to watch the sunset in Australia is Cottesloe Beach in Perth. This is a family-friendly beach. You can spend hours there swimming, snorkeling, and surfing. Nearby cafes are perfect when you all need to grab a bite to eat. Just make sure you stick around to watch the sun set low over the horizon. If you need to, arrive at this beach later in the day so you are not too tired before the viewing of the sunset begins.

Best Hikes in New Zealand

Best Hikes in New Zealand on the North Island 

Cathedral Cove 

Okay, so this hike sounds simple with a nice name that makes you think of weddings. Thankfully, this hike in New Zealand lives up to its name!  

You will find the trail leading to Cathedral Cove on the Coromandel Peninsula. The trail includes sections of concrete, stairs, and a wooden boardwalk. The entire two-mile trail takes you through a forest. When you reach the end, you will be within Cathedral Cove.  

This cove is a beachy area. There are a few small caves you can explore with your family. Don’t forget your camera, because the offshore rock formations are worthy of a few pictures.  

Kamahi Loop Track 

The Kamahi Loop Track can be found within Egmont National Park. This is one of the shortest hikes in New Zealand. It only takes approximately fifteen minutes to walk this trail.  

Tell the kids a story that relates to goblins during this walk through the karahi trees. At the end of the story, tell them they just survived a walk through Goblin Forest. Guaranteed, they will want to walk the loop again to look for the goblins.  

Rangitoto Island Loop 

If your family is interested in taking this best hike in New Zealand, you must be prepared to take the ferry to reach the starting point. After all, as the name suggests, this trail is on Rangitoto Island.  

This seven-and-a-half-mile trail will take your family through a pohutukawa forest. Near the summit, you will all have fabulous views of the Hauraki Gulf, as well as the city of Auckland.  

There are lava caves at the summit too. Make sure you have a flashlight or two with you, so you can explore them.  

This is one of the hikes in New Zealand that you will want to make sure you are fully prepared for. Once you reach the island, you won’t find any stores. Therefore, if you run out of food or water, you are out of luck until you get back to the mainland.  

Mount Maunganui Summit 

The trail that leads to the Mount Maunganui Summit is about two miles long. Crushed gravel makes up most of this hiking trail. There are stairs, too, so keep that in mind.  

It can be cloudy at the top on most days. But the slightly obstructed views are still worth the quick hike to the top.  

Te Werahi Loop 

The Te Werahi Loop trail can be found at the northernmost point of the North Island in New Zealand. It is within the Te Paki Recreation Reserve. This trail is well-marked, so you won’t need to worry about going off-course.  

You can choose to just walk along the trail near the beach. This section of the trail will take about three hours. However, you can walk the entire loop in approximately six hours. So, it all depends on how much hiking your family wants to do during this vacation in New Zealand.  

Southern Walkway 

The Southern Walkway is six and a half miles each way. Most people will start at one end and stop when they reach the other end. However, you can walk both ways if you want.  

Thankfully, it is simple to stop at the end and take public transportation back to your starting point. This is due to the trail being so close to the city. In fact, you can wander off the trail to visit nearby coffee shops and stores the entire time.  

Best Hikes in New Zealand on the South Island 

Tiki Trail 

The Tiki Trail is near Queenstown. The trail is just over a mile long. It is quite steep. You must walk through forested areas to reach the top. It is worth it, though, to see the spectacular views of the city and bay.  

If you cannot handle this steep trail, don’t worry. You can always enjoy the views from the nearby gondola ride.  

Mount Robert Circuit 

If your family is interested in seeing Lake Rotoiti, as well as the town of Saint Arnaud, from a different perspective, head out on the Mount Robert Circuit.  

This hike isn’t too steep. It takes you through a beech forest before allowing you to break out into the open air. This is where you will find yourselves surrounded by alpine herbs.  

The Mount Robert Circuit is five miles long. Start early to ensure you have enough time. Oh, and wear layers. It starts out chilly and then gets warm under the sun. Additional layers may be needed for the windy conditions at the top.  

Hooker Valley Track 

The Hooker Valley Track is seven miles long. Don’t panic and think you can’t possibly hike that far in New Zealand. There is very little elevation gain during this hike. So, it won’t be anything more than a walk in the park.  

In between views of Hooker Lake, Mueller Glacier, and alpine streams, you will have a few adventures. Three swing bridges add to the fun of this easy-to-do hike in New Zealand.  

Rob Roy Glacier Track 

You will find this glacier track within Mount Aspiring National Park. Pack a lunch to enjoy near one of the waterfalls you discover along the way. Or keep your lunch in the bag until you have reached the viewing point. Either way, you will enjoy fabulous views together as a family.  

This hike in New Zealand is six miles long. Start early so you have time to stop and appreciate the beauty all around you.  

Cape Foulwind Walkway 

One of the best places to see fur seals in New Zealand is while hiking along Cape Foulwind Walkway. This walkway is four miles round trip. It is an easy walk that is near a beach. You can easily combine this hike in New Zealand with your beach day. 

Everyone in your family will learn about this area from the interpretation signs along the walkway. You will even learn a few things about the nearby lighthouse.  

Lake Matheson Loop Track 

If your family isn’t the type to hit the trails for a hike, I have you covered. The Lake Matheson Loop Track is a short, looped trail. It is only about a mile and a half long.  

Take your camera because you will be amazed at how picturesque this lake truly is. You can easily do this walk in an hour. However, I recommend planning on a couple of hours, so you have time to take as many pictures as you would like.

The Best Things to Do for Families in Each New Zealand Region

North Island

Northland

In Northland, you will find the northernmost point of the country. That point is known as Cape Reinga. You must take your family there while on vacation in New Zealand. There’s a lighthouse where the Pacific Ocean meets the Tasman Sea. I recommend walking part of the Te Paki Coastal Track to check out the views.

Surfing adventures are best over at Shipwreck Bay. However, if your family is looking for a unique adventure, you will be better off heading over to the Glowworm Caves. Glowworms, or bioluminescent insects, live within these caves. Seeing these insects glowing will be a highlight during your vacation in New Zealand.

Over in Kerikeri, you must stop at Rewa’s Village and the Stone Store. This is also where Rainbow Falls is located. You can see a rainbow from underneath the falls. That means a little swim is in order unless you want to miss the rainbow!

Auckland

One of the best things to do in New Zealand for families is ride the train in Auckland. The Northern Explorer will take you from Auckland to Wellington and back again. This journey is long at twelve hours. But the scenery and experience are well worth the time. Plus, you won’t need to deal with the hassle of driving a car or taking a plane.

When you decide to stay right in Auckland, head over to Cornwall Park. Think Central Park in New York City, but with a twist. This park is located on top of a volcanic cone. You can wander around a Maori fort. Pay your respects to Sir John Logan Campbell, who donated money for this park. And check out the views at One Tree Hill.

Some of the best restaurants and bars can be found at Viaduct Harbour. It is also an excellent place to wander around on nice days because it offers gorgeous views. Other things to do in Auckland include visiting the New Zealand Maritime Museum and seeing the views from the Sky Tower.

Waikato

The Hobbiton Movie Set is a must-see attraction in Waikato. The original Hobbit holes used in the movies can still be seen at this location. If any member of your family is a Hobbit fan, make sure this is on your list of things to do in New Zealand!

A little downtime can be found at Hamilton Gardens, Bridal Veil Falls, and Wairere Falls. More action can be found at Lake Taupo. Bungee jumping is quite popular there. Surfing is best at Ngarunui Beach. And warm water is always available at Kawhia’s Hot Water Beach.

Bay of Plenty

The best beaches in New Zealand can be found along the miles of shoreline in the Bay of Plenty. There are quite a few surf schools in the area too. So, this might be your best option for learning how to surf while on a family vacation in New Zealand.

During a visit to the Bay of Plenty, your family will want to make the trek to the top of Mauao. The walk is steep but short. Well worth it if you want an Instagram-worthy picture from your family vacation! You can easily soak in the Mount Hot Pools at the base of Mauao at the end.

Boat tours are a must in the Bay of Plenty. I recommend taking one out to see the dolphins and other marine life. If boats aren’t your thing, you can always take a helicopter ride for views from a different vantage point.

Gisborne

Your days will start early in Gisborne. Watching the sunrise from Maunga Hikurangi is a must for any family vacation in New Zealand. Once you have this bucket list item checked off, you can head over to the Rere Rockslide. This natural waterslide will take you all the way down to a swimming hole. It’s one adventure you won’t want to miss!

A calmer adventure includes walking the Tolaga Bay Wharf. It is the longest pier in the Southern Hemisphere at just under a half mile.

Exploring the Kiwi Towns, climbing the steps to the top of the East Cape Lighthouse, and cycling the Motu Trail are other things to do for families in Gisborne, New Zealand.

Hawke’s Bay

Hawke’s Bay is the place to go in New Zealand when you want wine. Especially red wine. There are more than seventy vineyards to visit. Make sure Mission Estate is on your list. It is the oldest winery in New Zealand.

Riding a bike is the best way to see and experience Hawke’s Bay. The trail up Te Mata Peak is the most popular cycling option.

Taranaki

Taranaki is the starting point for the Forgotten World Highway. This adventure will take you through numerous quaint towns. Your adventures will allow you to see the Moki Tunnel, Mount Damper Falls, and Lauren’s Lavender Farm.

Another option is to walk along New Plymouth’s Coastal Walkway. You may also want to tackle the Pouakai Crossing with your family.

History is everywhere at the Tawhiti Museum. And you won’t be able to resist all the flowers within the gardens at Pukeiti Forest.

Manawatu-Wanganui

There are so many fun family adventures in Manawatu-Wanganui! Young kids will enjoy an hour or two at Kowhai Park. This is the best playground in Whanganui. The black sand of Kai Iwi Beach is also a hit amongst many families like yours.

Climbing up the one hundred seventy-six steps to the top of the Durie Hill Memorial Tower brings gorgeous views of the area. And the Durie Hill Elevator will take you underground.

The best thing to do in this area of New Zealand, though is the walk to the Bridge to Nowhere. It will take you approximately an hour and a half to walk to this abandoned bridge that doesn’t lead anywhere.

Wellington

One of the best things to do for families in Wellington is ride the cable car. This cable car is bright red. It takes you from the Lambton Quay shopping area all the way to the lookout. During your ride, you will be rewarded with panoramic views of Wellington.

You can also walk up to the Mount Victoria Lookout using the nature trails.

This city in New Zealand is known for its festivals and other events. I recommend planning your family vacation in New Zealand for a time when one of these events is taking place. Two of the most popular festivals include the World of Wearable Art Awards Show and the New Zealand Festival.

South Island

Tasman

Abel Tasman National Park is one of the best places to visit when on a family vacation in New Zealand. The bays within the park are perfect for kayaking and sailing. Hiking along the Abel Tasman Great Walk is a must for those who want views from high up on the limestone cliffs.

If you really want incredible views, take a risk, and do a little skydiving with your family over this national park. If that activity is too adrenaline-filled for you, I can always arrange for a helicopter tour instead.

Other things to do in Tasman include checking out Golden Bay and Te Waikoropupu Springs. White water rafting through the Buller Canyon. Cycling the Tasman’s Great Taste Trail. And visiting the nearby Nelson Classic Car Museum.

Nelson

One of the first things your family should do when arriving in Nelson is relaxing on Tahunanui Beach. On Saturdays and Sundays, I recommend venturing over to Montgomery Square to check out the markets before heading to the beach. The markets are the best places to grab some food for later in the day.

The Queens Gardens, the World of Wearable Art Museum, and the Broadgreen Historic House are all wonderful places to check out during a family vacation in New Zealand.

Now, if you are looking for thrilling adventures while in Nelson, cycle through Spooners Tunnel. Or go hiking in Mount Richmond Forest Park.

Marlborough

Everyone in your family will love heading out in the water to go swimming with the dolphins in Marlborough Sounds. If you don’t want to head out on the water, you can always stay on land. You can easily check out the dolphins from the shoreline as you walk along the Queen Charlotte Track. This trail goes from Ship Cove to Anakiwa. You won’t be able to walk this entire trail is one day. It takes five days to walk.

The aviation history of Marlborough can be seen at the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre. A quick trip to the town of Havelock is a must. This old gold mining settlement is now known for its boutique galleries and restaurants.

West Coast

Two of the most accessible glaciers in the world can be found on the West Coast of New Zealand. During your family vacation, you must take the time to check out the Franz Josef and Fox glaciers on the West Coast. You can simply see the glaciers from the air. However, I recommend taking a guided walk to one or actually heading out on the ice for a hike.

You should also check out the Pancake Rocks, complete with blowholes. It is best to visit during high tide because that is when the blowholes are active.

The Oparara Arches, Hokitika Gorge, and Haast World Heritage Site are other beautiful areas to visit during a family vacation in New Zealand.

Oh, and your family might be up for the challenge of cycling along the Old Ghost Road. This remote and challenging ride takes you from the West Coast all the way to the ghost town of Lyell in the Buller Gorge.

Canterbury

Driving along State Highway 72 in Canterbury is an excellent way to experience the beauty of the area. Over near Raincliff, you will see the largest collection of Maori Rock Art in the country. Preserved urban Victorian and Edwardian architecture can be seen in Timaru.

During a walk along the Waimate Walkway, you can check out The Cuddy. It is a thatched house that was constructed back in 1854.

Canterbury is also a wonderful destination for visiting vineyards and drinking wine.

Otago

If your family loves riding bikes, you must head out on the Otago Central Rail Trail. This trail follows the route of the old Otago Central Railway. The trail is approximately ninety-four miles long. So, we will need to plan carefully if you want to see it all.

While in Otago, you must make stops in Nugget Point, Arrowtown, Dunedin, and Queenstown. They will all offer extraordinary things for your family to do during this amazing vacation in New Zealand.

Southland

Water adventures are plentiful down in Southland. Lake Hauroko and the Wairaurahiri River are the two places to have those family adventures.

Over on nearby Stewart Island, you can spot dozens of kiwis. I recommend having me hire a guide to take you out on a Kiwi spotting adventure. This will allow you to see most of the island while learning more about these native creatures.

Before leaving Southland, you must take a drive around the Southern Scenic Route. It will take a while to do if you stop everywhere you should. But it is worth the time spent for the opportunity to really embrace this area of New Zealand.

The New Zealand Regions to Consider for Your Family Vacation

The regions in New Zealand are mostly divided between the North and South Islands. These two islands are separated by the Cook Strait. There are so many amazing things to do for families in each New Zealand region.

Out in the water, there are smaller islands you can also visit during your family vacation. Those islands may be perfect if you are looking to make a few unique memories with your family.

The North Island

Northland

Northland is at the very northernmost tip of North Island. This region of New Zealand is where you will find some of the best beaches in the entire country. The Bay of Islands is the most popular attraction in this New Zealand region.

There are plenty of historical sights to see in Northland. Add in the spectacular views, and you may never want to return home!

When you are finished visiting Bay of Islands, you may want to consider stopping in the towns of Whangarei and Kerikeri. They both offer a multitude of outdoor activities that will keep your family busy for days.

Auckland

The largest city in New Zealand is Auckland. And it happens to be in the region with the same name. This region is full of magnificent scenery. The downtown area contains lots of cultural landmarks and historical sites for you to explore.

Away from the downtown area, your family can explore the local beaches and nearby volcanoes. Out in the Hauraki Gulf, you can check out numerous islands. The most popular islands include Great Barrier, Waiheke, and Tiritiri Matangi. Each island offers hiking trails, as well as kayaking adventures.

Waikato

Over in the Waikato region of New Zealand, you will discover more of the gorgeous natural scenery the country is known for. I recommend starting out on the Coromandel Peninsula. That is where you can walk along paths or relax on one of the sandy beaches.

In the town of Hahei, you can visit Hot Water Beach. Participating in water sports at that beach is one of the most loved things to do in the area.

One of the best things to do in Waikato though is hiking down into the Ruakuri Cave. I suggest setting aside a few hours for this adventure so you don’t rush through the experience.

Bay of Plenty

The Bay of Plenty region is located right on a body of water that has the same name. The towns of Tauranga, Whakatane, and Waihi Beach are the highest on the list of people to visit in this region. One of the best ways to experience the Bay of Plenty is to take a boat or helicopter tour. This will ensure you see Mount Ruapehu and the other volcanoes in the area.

Heading out to White Island is an extraordinary day trip option. There is a green crater lake there, which makes for stunning Instagram photos.

Bay of Plenty is also known for its geysers and hot springs. Especially those within the town of Rotorua. If you don’t spend too much time in this region, Rotorua should be at the top of your list of things to do.

Gisborne

The Gisborne region is also known as Eastland. The reason for this is this New Zealand region is located on the eastern side of North Island. This was the very first region to be discovered in New Zealand. Captain Cook saw this section first and then took off on foot to see the rest of the island.

Gisborne is an isolated area. The only section that is not isolated is the city of Gisborne. During a vacation in the city of Gisborne, you can relax on the beaches, participate in water sports, or enjoy a glass of wine at the wineries.

Hawke’s Bay

Hawke’s Bay is also on the eastern coast of North Island. In the cities of Hastings and Napier, you can check out the Art Deco buildings. Outside the cities, you can wander around the orchards and vineyards with wineries. Don’t miss the Te Mata Hills. Those hills have some incredible scenery.

And if you want to visit the destination with the longest name in the world, head over to Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukuppkaowhenuakitanatahu. It is located in Hawke’s Bay and is a must-see if only to learn how to pronounce the name!

Taranaki

Amongst the Taranaki region is a volcano of the same name. Days spent in this region of New Zealand will be full of time at Egmont National Park. When you are not staring at the volcano, you will be checking out the wildlife living within the park.

Manawatu-Wanganui

The Manawatu-Wanganui region is full of valleys, gorges, plains, forests, volcanoes, and mountain ranges. One of the best places to visit in this region is Tongariro National Park. There are many Maori cultural sites within the park. You can check some of those out as you are tackling the Tongariro Alpine Crossing hiking trail.

Wellington

Wellington is the capital of New Zealand. A visit to this city will allow your family to make memories while exploring museums, visiting historical attractions, and attending a lively art and culture scene. I recommend heading away from the city to the Kapiti Coast for a day if you can. The coast is where you will discover laidback towns and plenty of sandy beaches.

Hutt Valley is another option if you plan on hiking during your family vacation. And wineries are plentiful over in Wairarapa.

The South Island

Tasman

The highlight of the region of Tasman is Abel Tasman National Park. It is within that park you can see Tasman Bay and both the Tasman and Matiri mountain ranges. This may be the smallest national park in New Zealand. However, that doesn’t mean you won’t find plenty of things to do during your visit.

I recommend checking out the two deepest caves in New Zealand while in Tasman. Those caves are Nettlebed and Ellis Basin.

Nelson

Nelson has earned the nickname, Top of the South, thanks to its location on South Island. There are plenty of beaches on the coastline, which is perfect for all the sunny days this region has throughout the year.

Nelson Lakes National Park should be at the top of your list of places to visit here. Hiking trails continue for miles and will lead you to sparkling lakes and massive mountains. Other incredible places to visit include the towns of Takaka, Collingwood, and Mapua.

Marlborough

Awatere and Wairau Valleys are both located in Marlborough. Those two valleys are full of vineyards and wineries. This makes the Marlborough region one of the best places to visit if you want to sip on wine throughout your stay.

In Marlborough Sounds, your family can go on a dolphin or whale-watching tour. Or you can kayak, sail, or participate in any number of other water sports.

West Coast

The West Coast is where you will discover glaciers, forests, and mountains. The best places to see all three, along with the Southern Alps, is Mount Aspiring National Park and Westland National Park.

There are so many outdoor activities to enjoy in this New Zealand region. It will be difficult to narrow it down to what you can do during your family vacation. However, we should make sure Blow Holes and Pancake Rocks are near the top of your list of things to do while on vacation in New Zealand.

Canterbury

The region of Canterbury is where the largest city on the island, Christchurch, is located. Inside the city of Christchurch, you will enjoy visiting the historical sights, museums, and cultural landmarks.

The highest peaks in New Zealand can be found within Aoraki Mount Cook National Park and Arthur’s Pass National Park. Just don’t forget to look in other directions too. There are volcanoes on the Banks Peninsula and snow-capped peaks in the Southern Alps.

Otago

Natural attractions are everywhere in Otago. This is what makes it the perfect destination for surfing, swimming, sailing, and so much more. Start your visit to the town of Oamaru since it is close to the water.

Head to the mountains for hiking or skiing adventures. And Queenstown is the perfect spot for thrilling family adventures. Especially if you all want to do a little mountaineering or bungee jumping.

Southland

Southland is at the southernmost point of South Island. The glaciers within Fiordland National Park are quite impressive. So, take your camera with you and grab those Instagram photos while you can!

The park is also full of waterfalls, rugged cliffs, and other impressive sights.

When you are not exploring the park, head to the towns of Mataura, Bluff, and Te Anau. They may be small, but they will give you a glimpse into the lives of the locals.

History of New Zealand

New Zealand has quite a fascinating history. The Māori were the first people to arrive in New Zealand. Abel Tasman was the first Dutchman to notice this country. However, it was the British who claimed it as one of their countries.

Since 1840, British Law has ruled New Zealand. You can still visit the building where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed. All the history of this country has culminated into the diverse culture New Zealand is now known for.

New Zealand Islands

While all this history is fascinating, there is one thing you must know before you head over to New Zealand. This country is comprised of two main islands. The North Island and the South Island. There are more than six hundred other islands in New Zealand. However, you cannot visit some of them.

Depending on the length of your family vacation, you may be able to see either one or both of the main islands. If time allows, you may be able to check out one of the smaller islands as well.

Weather in New Zealand

The weather in New Zealand is similar to the weather in Australia. It is important to note that the seasons in this country are opposite what we have here in the US. To make this a little easier for you, here are the seasons and the corresponding months.

• Spring – September to November
• Summer – December to February
• Fall – March to May
• Winter – June to August

During spring in New Zealand, the temperatures begin to get warmer. There is a lot of rain in the spring, but the warmer days make it easy to overlook the downpours. Sunshine is prominent in New Zealand during the summer months. The days get even warmer, and the rainy days are fewer.

The fall season brings cooler temperatures, but still, lots of sunshine. The evenings do get cooler. But nothing a sweatshirt can’t fix. The winter months bring lots of snow to certain areas of New Zealand. You will want to plan your trip carefully if you don’t want to include snow in your New Zealand vacation.

Best Time to Visit New Zealand

The best time to visit New Zealand is during their summer months. December and January are quite busy in New Zealand. This is due to warm temperatures, lots of sunshine, and the ability to swim in the ocean.

You must keep in mind that all the locals are off from school, and some from work, during these months. Therefore, beaches and other local attractions will be packed with locals and other tourists.

If you are looking for fewer crowds, I recommend visiting during New Zealand’s spring or fall seasons. You will still experience nice weather, and the sun will still be out. Yes, you may experience a little rain. But those raindrops will be worth it when you have space to move around and breathe.

What to Pack for a Vacation in New Zealand

If you are planning a vacation in New Zealand for the warmer months of the year, you will be fine packing shorts and T-shirts. And don’t forget your bathing suit. Pants and sweaters may be necessary earlier in the day and later at night, especially during the spring and fall.

A raincoat or umbrella will be helpful during New Zealand’s rainy season. And sturdy walking shoes are always necessary, especially if you plan on heading out on a hike.

During the winter, warmer clothes are a must. As are winter coats, gloves, hats, and boots. Basically, anything your family will need for time outside in the cold and snow.

Best Activities for Your Family Vacation in New Zealand

There are so many amazing activities you can do during a family vacation in New Zealand. You will find multiple forests in this country. And inside those forests are ziplining adventures. Imagine ziplining high above the trees, as your entire family takes in the sights below. Paragliding will give you the same results if you want to see even more views from above the land.

Hiking is another family activity in New Zealand that will allow you to see the countryside. You can tackle short trails or go all in and head out on a longer trail. There are even Great Walks that will take you at least three to five days to complete.

Natural hot springs can be found all over New Zealand. Soaking in these hot springs is an excellent way to relax and unwind. A lot of hot springs are located in Taupo and Rotorua, which are both on the North Island. Hanmer Springs is in Canterbury on the South Island. It is the next best location for finding hot springs.

Kaikoura, on the South Island, is the best place to see whales, fur seals, dolphins, and birds. It is a coastal village that will have you relaxing in no time at all. Well, that is when you are not hiking the numerous trails.

Over on the North Island, you must take the time to explore Auckland. This major city seems to have it all. Stores, restaurants, bustling city streets, sandy beaches, coves, and hiking trails. The last few surround the city, along with a few volcanoes. If you are not much of a country person, this is the destination you will want to spend most of your time in during a family vacation in New Zealand.

The Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers can be found on the South Island. These are two of the most accessible glaciers in the world. I can arrange for your family to take a guided hike that includes visits to ice caves and hot pools.

Māori hāngi is a dish that has been served in New Zealand from the very beginning. Meat and vegetables are placed in a pot and then buried underground to cook in an oven. It takes all day to prepare, so you will only be served this dish on special occasions.

A kiwi burger is not your regular burger. This New Zealand burger adds beetroot and a fried egg on top of the hamburger patty. You can find a Kiwi burger at almost every restaurant in New Zealand.

Jaffas are a type of candy. They are small chocolate balls coated in sugar. Jaffas have a slight orange flavor to them, despite the fact they are red.

Southland cheese rolls are also called Southland sushi. It is basically a slice of bread with cheese rolled up. It is then grilled until the cheese is all melted. You will only find Southland cheese rolls in Southland and Otago.

If you only want to try one dessert while on a family vacation in New Zealand, it must be hokey pokey ice cream. This is ice cream that is topped with caramelized honeycomb.

Now I don’t know about you, but I am all about desserts and chocolate. So, you won’t see me just eating ice cream one time while on vacation in New Zealand. Especially when I have the opportunity to eat chocolate fish. Marshmallows shaped like fish are covered in chocolate to make this sweet treat. They make the perfect snack when your body needs a little chocolate.

Incredible Festivals to Attend in New Zealand

There are plenty of incredible festivals to choose from when you take a family vacation in New Zealand. Some of the festivals in New Zealand are more popular than others. I know you can find one that interests your family if you want to attend a festival while on vacation in New Zealand.

Oktoberfest

It doesn’t matter where you are in the world when it comes to celebrating Oktoberfest. There is always a festival taking place. However, celebrating Oktoberfest in New Zealand will probably be a memory your family will remember for a lifetime. This festival includes lots of beer, as well as brats and live music.

Auckland International Buskers Festival

This festival brings street performers from around the world to Auckland. Those street performers do everything from juggling and hula hooping to acrobats and comedy shows. You will see a little of everything over the course of this festival.

Hokitika Wildfoods Festival

The Hokitika Wildfoods Festival is the best food festival in New Zealand. This is an excellent festival to attend if you want to try local foods during your vacation. Most of the foods will be seafood and other wild foods.

Tips for Visiting New Zealand

As with any other destination, there are tips that will help you thoroughly enjoy your vacation in New Zealand. Here are my best tips for visiting New Zealand.

• Always have extra layers with you – The weather is always changing in New Zealand. It is best to have an extra layer so you are not cold.
• Learn about the rules of the road if you are planning to drive in New Zealand – First, they always drive on the left. Second, GPS is not always reliable in New Zealand. There are a few other rules you will need to know before you get behind the wheel of a car.
• Always put on sunscreen – The UV rays are intense in New Zealand. So, lather on the sunscreen to prevent getting burned.
• Tipping is not necessary
• You will need your passport to prove your age when purchasing alcohol

The States of Australia

There are six states within the country of Australia. You have probably heard of states like Queensland and Tasmania. However, Victoria and New South Wales may not be on your radar. Each one of these states offers something unique. Therefore, you will want to choose the states of Australia you want to visit according to what activities your family would love to do the most.

New South Wales

Sydney is one of the major cities found within the New South Wales state of Australia. This is the area of Australia that most people visit for many reasons. The main reason is there is an international airport located within Sydney. Most families like yours cannot resist the popular attractions. Attractions like the soft sandy beaches, and the ability to check a destination off their travel bucket list.

Your days in New South Wales can include hiking to the waterfalls in the Blue Mountains or leisurely lunches after shopping in the city. Spending time at the beach is a must, but so is wine tasting at one of the local vineyards. Of course, you should also check out the Sydney Opera House, St Mary’s Cathedral, Powerhouse Museum, and Hyde Park. If your family loves thrills, I can schedule a time to climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge as well.

Queensland

Queensland is the second popular state of Australia when it comes to family vacations. While there are many bustling cities to explore, your family may prefer to spend their time exploring lush rainforests or the Great Barrier Reef. Two amazing areas of Australia to explore while in Queensland are the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast. A must-do island hopping adventure in Australia includes sailing over to the Whitsunday Islands. There are also international airports in this part of the country. So, if your family wants to avoid the touristy sights of Sydney, you may prefer the down under experience Queensland has to offer.

Snorkeling, diving, or taking a boat ride near the Great Barrier Reef is an excellent way to spend a few days as a family in Queensland. The Skyrail Rainforest Cableway will offer unique views of this area of Australia from a different vantage point. Other family adventures you may want to include on your itinerary are exploring the Capricorn Caves, hiking to Josephine Falls, and checking out the crocs at Australia Zoo.

South Australia

If your family wants to escape the big city for a few days, or even a few weeks, South Australia will have exactly what you want. The coastal regions lead directly to the outback and family adventures are everywhere. In Adelaide, you can taste some fine wines. Over on Kangaroo Island, you can hang out with the wildlife. And if a road trip sounds like the perfect way to spend time with your kids, the Great Ocean Road will be waiting for you.

When your family is not at a local beach, or in the middle of the outback, you may find yourselves shopping at the Adelaide Central Market. At the Old Timers Mine, you will all get your history lesson for the day. However, you all may prefer spending the day with the dolphins at the Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary.

Tasmania

You must leave the mainland when you decide to spend part of your family vacation in Tasmania. But the extra travel to this state in Australia is worth it. That’s thanks to the fact that more than forty percent of the island is protected land. When you are not reconnecting with each other in nature, your family can spend time participating in the area’s diverse culture. This island definitely has a laidback vibe, and your family will want to take advantage of that during your visit.

Of course, you won’t want to hang around at the beach all day! You can visit quirky museums, take long walks while visiting with the wildlife, and even play some golf on a world class course. Just make sure you take the time to check out the Spiky Bridge, Henty Dunes, and the White Knights of Evercreech. Hiking to Dip Falls is also a must when you are on vacation in Tasmania.

Victoria

Diversity is everywhere in the Victoria state of Australia. Whether you are talking about the coastline, rainforests, and ski areas or the history, food, and culture. It will all have you wondering what you could possibly discover next. This area of Australia is where you will find the city of Melbourne, as well as part of the Great Ocean Road and the Mornington Peninsula.

You can spend your day exploring the 12 Apostles, the Royal Botanic Gardens, or the Queen Victoria Market. However, the kids may prefer to try to strike it rich while panning for gold at Sovereign Hill. Shopping, while wandering around the city laneways is also popular with the younger crowd. If you really want to get everyone’s heart racing, you can always check out the city from the Melbourne Skydeck.

Western Australia

Western Australia is the largest state of Australia. It covers approximately one third of the entire country. A vacation in this area of Australia can have you exploring for days and still not seeing everything you should. Some of the best Australian landscapes can be seen in Western Australia and you won’t want to miss any of them. I recommend you begin with the ancient Aboriginal sites and work your way towards the water.

Your family will want to swim with the whale sharks over at Ningaloo Reef before hanging out with the quokkas on Rottnest Island. Checking out the planes at the Aviation Heritage Museum can be fun, but not as exciting as exploring Mammoth Cave. And you know you won’t forgive yourself if you don’t get a family photo under the Dave Evans Bicentennial Tree.

These are the six states of Australia and only you will know which ones you should visit for your next family vacation. Most families will choose one or two of the states to explore, but you can choose as many as you like.
