Alaska Bucket List Destinations 

Anchorage 

You really can’t miss Anchorage when you are on a family vacation in Alaska. Most of the time, you will find yourself in this city after your flight or while on a cruise.  

This city is full of museums, stores, and cultural exhibits. And yet, you may also spot a moose and other wildlife walking right down the streets in Anchorage. It’s a great reminder of how close you really are to nature in this beautiful state.  

Start with a visit to the Anchorage Museum. Then head out on a walking tour of Anchorage. You may even want to head out on a hike in Anchorage to see the surrounding landscape.   

Talkeetna 

Talkeetna is a small town in Alaska that often gets overlooked. This is a wonderful destination for fishing and whitewater rafting.  

Another option is to take a flight over Denali. These flights are amazing and allow you to see Denali from a different vantage point.  

Denali National Park 

There are so many things to see and do while visiting Denali National Park. Hiking will allow you to see part of this park. However, if you want to see as much as possible, I recommend hopping on the tour bus or doing a Jeep excursion.  

Those will both allow you to cover at least one hundred miles of this park. During your tour, you will see the best of Denali. This includes glaciers, wildlife, and so much more.  

Seward 

Seward is one of the best places to see glaciers in Alaska. Head out on a boat tour to see at least one glacier. The good news is you will also have ample opportunities to see humpback whales, puffins, sea otters, and other marine life while on the boat.  

Back on land, you can stop at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. They take care of animals who have been injured and cannot be released back into the wild. During your visit, you can see moose, musk ox, bears, porcupines, bison, wolves, and other animals.  

Soldotna 

The Kenai River is one of the best places to go fishing in Alaska. It is also where you can watch the Salmon Fishing Run. While on the banks of the Kenai River, you must keep an eye out for wildlife. You never know when a moose or bear will join you down by the river.  

After your fishing adventures, head to the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge for a hike. Or go to the Soldotna Historical Museum to see vintage log cabins.

Best Things to Do in Bali 

Relax at Nyang Nyang Beach 

Trying to find a quiet and secluded destination in Bali is almost impossible. However, you can manage the impossible when you take your family to Nyang Nyang Beach.  

It may take you a little time to find this secluded treasure. But the soft white sand and green cliffs will be worth the wait. So will the opportunity to spend time on a beach without the crowds.  

Snorkel at Pantai Pasir Putih 

This is another secret beach in Bali. You must head over to the eastern side of the island to enjoy the laidback feel of this sandy shoreline. The water is crystal clear at this beach. So, it is one of the best places to go if you want to snorkel, or swim, with marine life while in Bali.  

Hike to Sekumpul Waterfall 

An hour-long hike will be necessary if you want to see the Sekumpul Waterfall up close during your family vacation in Bali. That hike is totally worth it though. Especially since you get to see the falls, as well as the gorgeous tropical landscape.  

Other noteworthy waterfalls in Bali are the Banyumala Twin Waterfalls. These waterfalls are eleven stories high. They both fall into a natural pool below. These waterfalls are further out from main vacation destinations. And they require a steep hike. However, they are perfect if you want to see the raw natural beauty Bali is known for.  

Wander Around Tirta Gangga 

Tirta Gangga used to be a palace for the royal Karangasem family beginning in 1946. It has since been transformed into beautiful water gardens. A visit here will have your family wandering around to see the fountains, sculptures, and flowers.  

Everyone will love swimming in the spring water pools or feeding the carp in the pond.  

Visit Tirta Empul 

Tirta Empul is a water temple in Bali. It has been in existence for more than one thousand years. During a visit there you can see courtyards, shrines, and purification pools. At those pools, you may see Balinese Hindus baptizing themselves underneath the waterspouts.  

It is important to note that you must wear a sarong to visit this water temple.  

Watch the Sunset at the Uluwatu Temple 

You must travel to the very southern part of Bali to see the Uluwatu Temple. It is located within the Pecatu Village. This ancient temple has protected the locals from evil spirits since the year 900. This is one of the best places to watch the sunset in Bali.  

Visit the Tegalalang Rice Terrace 

One of the best things to do in Bali is visit the Tegalalang Rice Terrace. This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are layers of rice paddies that are watered via an ancient irrigation system. Walk along the terraces to see the views. Just pay attention to the farmers and listen to their instructions to avoid any issues.  

Check Out the Beji Guwang Hidden Canyon 

This hidden canyon is actually in plain sight if you know where to look. Your family will want to be prepared to swim, climb, and scale a few rocks to check out the canyons that line the Oos River. You must have a guide with you, so you stay safe and don’t get lost along the way.  

It is best to visit this hidden canyon during the dry season. The canyon will close when the tides get too high.  

Say Hi to the Monkeys at the Ubud Monkey Forest 

The Ubud Monkey Forest is a holy site where Balinese macaques live. Some people believe this is simply an open-air zoo. However, it is not, and the cheeky monkeys will prove that to you quickly. Keep a close eye on your belongings, and make sure you don’t let anything dangle or get loose. If you do, the monkeys will quickly grab the loose item and it will be gone forever.  

Watch the Sunrise at Pura Lempuyang Luhur 

This is a seven-temple complex that is known as the Gateway to Heaven. There are lots of steps that lead to the temples. Pura Lempuyang Luhur is one of the most magnificent sights in Bali. It is best to arrive here to watch the sunrise if you can. However, visiting at any time of the day will bring stunning views. This is another temple where you must wear a sarong.  

Go Shopping at the Sukawati Art Market 

There are a few different markets for shopping in Bali. Many people choose to do all their shopping at the Ubud Market. I recommend heading over to the Sukawati Art Market to see what they have first. You never know what artwork you will find to take back home with you.

This is a once in a lifetime experience that will have you making tons of memories with your family. Of course, you must prepare for this hiking adventure. To help you understand what you must be aware of before, during, and after your time trekking to Everest Base Camp, I am sharing a few tips. These tips will have you successfully trekking to Everest Base Camp and enjoying the adventure of a lifetime.  

Tips for Successfully Trekking to Everest Base Camp 

Pack the Proper Gear 

Having the proper gear for your trek to Everest Base Camp is extremely important. During your hike, you will experience frigid temperatures and chilling winds. Add in the warmth from the sunshine and you will discover why layers are extremely necessary for this trek.  

It is best to pack a t-shirt, long sleeved shirt, light jacket, down jacket, pants, and warm socks. Break in your hiking boots prior to this adventure to avoid blisters and chafing.  

Other must-have items include trekking poles, gloves, raincoats, thermos, power bank, and medications. Sunscreen is another must since the rays of the sun are quite strong as you gain elevation.  

Prepare for Altitude Sickness 

Altitude sickness is a real problem when trekking to Everest Base Camp. It is best to arrive a few days before your trek. Staying in the higher altitudes in areas like Lukla and Namche Bazaar will help you prevent altitude sickness. Medications can also be taken to help with altitude sickness.  

Not being prepared for the altitude is one of the main reasons why so many people do not make it to Everest Base Camp. Don’t be one of those people who need to head back to the bottom simply because you didn’t prepare for the altitude change in advance.  

Train Well for Trekking to Everest Base Camp

The trek to Everest Base Camp involves steep uphill paths, high altitudes, rocky terrain, and lower oxygen levels. Training well ahead of your trek is the only way you can build the stamina and strength you need to complete this journey.  

The good news is your entire family can train together. This means you will make even more memories as you prepare for this vacation of a lifetime.

Bring Snacks and Drinks 

Refreshments will be available to purchase at the shops and lodges along the trail. To avoid making purchases of items you may not want to eat or drink, take your own snacks with you for this trek. It guarantees you will have what you want when you are hungry or thirsty.  

Choose Vegetables over Meat While on the Trek 

Trekking to Everest Base Camp will mean you are eating meals at the lodges along the way. It is difficult to get food to these lodges. Sometimes meats, and other items, will be unrefrigerated for days before it reaches where it is going. Therefore, it is best to skip ordering those items and focus on eating items that do not require refrigeration while on this hike.  

Vegetarian meals are safe to eat, while providing the protein you need to keep your strength up for this hike.  

Be Flexible with Your Travel Dates for Trekking to Everest Base Camp

Lukla Airport is one of the airports in the world that has flights that are delayed by days due to weather. A trek along the trail to Everest Base Camp can also be delayed due to weather, landslides, and other natural occurrences. It is best to be flexible with your travel dates, so you can accomplish your goal of reaching Everest Base Camp.  

These are the best tips I can give you for trekking to Everest Base Camp. There may be others that I am missing, but your guides will share those with you before you head out on the trail.

Consider These Once in a Lifetime Vacations 

Meteora, Greece 

The Greek Islands are an incredible destination to visit, but I recommend heading to Meteora for your family vacation. This spectacular destination has yet to become overrun by tourists. This means you will have plenty of space to explore and relax in solitude.  

This part of the country is known for its unique rock formations. Add in the monasteries located at the top of those rock formations, and you will have something different to do on your family vacation.  

There used to be twenty-four monasteries at the top of the rocks. There are now only six. Each one offers a unique experience you won’t want to miss during your visit.  

Kenya 

Kenya is a country that is known for all its wildlife, including the Big Five. One of my favorite things to do in this country is head out on a safari. While you are exploring the parks, you will see so much more than animals.  

There are snow-capped mountains to gaze at. And yet, not too far away is an arid desert and lush coastlines. Take the time to learn about Kenyan cultures and traditions. There is a lot to learn from the forty distinct ethnic groups in the country.  

Fiji 

There are more than eight hundred islands in Fiji. This makes it one of the best places to go sailing and island hopping. While on land, you can explore the lush jungles. Or simply relax on one of the soft white sandy beaches.  

If you are looking for a peaceful vacation in Fiji, I recommend staying on COMO Laucala Island. It is a private island that offers spacious bungalows and plenty of activities. You will also have access to a racing yacht and mini-submarine during your visit.  

Morocco 

A family vacation in Morocco will have you exploring cities like Fez, Marrakech, and Tangier. This is one of those once-in-a-lifetime vacations that will have you wandering through secret gardens and medinas. You can shop in riad boutiques or head into the souks and spice markets the locals frequent.  

For a slightly unique experience, venture out to Taghazout Bay. This old fishing village has had new life breathed into it and is now a luxurious destination. This is a perfect place to relax before heading back home.  

Perez Zeledon, Costa Rica 

Most people head to beach destinations during family vacations in Costa Rica. I recommend heading to the lush rainforest instead. Perez Zeledon is an excellent choice. During your vacation there, you can visit the locals within a remote tribal village. Riding along the river on the back of a horse is a great way to start your days.  

You won’t want to miss out on visiting the nearby coffee farm, either. Your family will learn how coffee beans are grown and harvested. Plus, you get to taste their delicious coffee.  

Slovenia 

If you have always wanted to see the beauty of the Alps and the Adriatic but haven’t wanted to deal with the crowds that come with them, take a family vacation in Slovenia. This beautiful destination seems to have it all. Gorgeous views, tons of history, and different cultures and traditions.  

Start your visit by exploring one or two of the historic cities. Head into the Julian Alps next. Then check out a castle or two before sipping on wine at the Brda Winelands.  

Antarctica 

Antarctica is usually one of those once-in-a-lifetime vacations that everyone dreams about but never takes. Push this trip to the top of your family vacation list now because it definitely is a must-do in my book!

At night, the skies normally light up as the Northern Lights begin to dance across the region.  Can’t get to Scandinavia? There are many places in the United States to see the Northern Lights. 

You can easily combine a family vacation in Scandinavia with a trip to Norway and Lapland. This could be the once-in-a-lifetime vacation no one in your family will ever forget!

Day One: Arusha 

The first day of your luxury Tanzania safari will be a busy one. You will fly into the Kilimanjaro/Arusha airport. Upon your arrival, you will be picked up by a private driver and whisked away to your accommodations. Your family will feel like VIPs right from the start of this safari adventure! 

Day Two: Arusha to Tarangire National Park 

You will need to get up slightly early on day two of this fabulous safari adventure. After a delicious breakfast, you will be taken to Tarangire National Park. This park offers the only water in the area to the wildlife during the dry season.  

Your family will want to spend a good portion of the day down by the river. The reason for this is many of the elephant families within the park spend their time at the river. Don’t forget about the hartebeest, giraffe, and bushbuck that live inside this national park, though. They are all worthy of a few photos too.  

Your guides will help you capture perfect pictures while they keep an eye out for lions and leopards lurking nearby.  

It will be a full day of adventures on this game drive, so you will sleep well at your accommodations on night two! 

Day Three: Tarangire National Park to Lake Manyara National Park 

After an excellent night’s sleep, your family should be raring to go as you head out to Lake Manyara National Park on day three. This is one of my favorite places to visit because you can see tree-climbing lions.  

During your family’s game drive, you will see so much more than those lions, though. Amongst all the savannah and evergreen forests, you will spot wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, elephant, and giraffe. In between sightings, talk about all the special things you are seeing as you make memories together.  

Day Four: Lake Manyara National Park to the Ngorongoro Crater 

The Ngorongoro Crater was created more than two or three million years ago. A massive volcano exploded before collapsing onto itself. The result is this geographical delight.  

One of the best parts of this luxury Tanzania safari will be the adventure your family will have driving down to the crater floor. Once you reach the inner depths of the crater, you will be amongst tons of wildlife.  

To start, try to see how many of the five hundred different bird species you can spot. Then focus on the gazelle, zebra, and wildebeest roaming around. One of the more elusive animals within the Ngorongoro Crater is the endangered black rhino. Not everyone gets to see this creature up close, but you may have a chance during your luxury safari vacation.  

Days Five and Six: Serengeti National Park 

One of the best places to go on safari in Tanzania is Serengeti National Park. At this point, you might think your family will be getting bored with exploring national parks. However, your arrival in Serengeti National Park will have you all saying WOW!  

This park is one of the oldest ecosystems on Earth. It is also the oldest national park in Tanzania. This practically untouched park is absolutely breathtaking.  

If you time your luxury Tanzania safari family vacation just right, you may get to capture a glimpse of the Great Migration. This is when all the wildebeests, along with gazelle and zebra, move across the park in search of fresh grazing areas. If you happen to hear thundering hooves during your visit, you will know that large numbers of animals are moving in.  

Days Seven through Nine: Serengeti National Park to the North Coast of Zanzibar 

Right after breakfast on day seven of your family vacation, everyone will board a plane to fly to Zanzibar. The coast of Zanzibar is known as Nungwi. The entire coastline is full of bright white coral sand that seems to glow when the sun goes down.  

Your last days of safari can be spent on the soft sand or out in the sparkling water. The reefs right off the coast are perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and parasailing. Your family may even want to take a sunset cruise one evening.  

If everyone prefers to stay on land, there are walking tours that share details of this beautiful area.  

Day Ten: Airport to Travel Home

Best Scuba Diving Places in the World 

Cayman Islands 

A little time in the Caribbean is exactly what the doctor ordered for rest and relaxation. However, I love sending families down there for all the scuba diving action. The Cayman Islands are surrounded by accessible wrecks that are mostly near the shoreline. This is excellent news if you want to tackle multiple dive sites during your family trip.  

A couple of the favorite shipwrecks near the Caymans include the USS Kittiwake and the Cayman Aggressor IV.  

There are many other tropical destinations for family vacations that you can consider if you don’t want to visit the Cayman Islands.

Chuuk Lagoon in Micronesia 

If you have never heard of Micronesia, it is an area in Oceania. There are more than two thousand islands within this destination. The largest of all the islands is Guam.  

Now that you know where Micronesia is located, it is time to focus on scuba diving in the Chuuk Lagoon. The water in this lagoon is full of ships that were wrecked during World War II. The tragedy is everywhere in these waters, and you will feel it as you explore with your family.  

Take the time to look at all the marine life as it swims around the Japanese wrecks of the San Francisco Maru and Shinkoku Maru.  

Heron Island in Australia 

Everyone knows that scuba diving at the Great Barrier Reef in Australia is incredible. However, if you are searching for something even better for your next family vacation, I recommend heading to Heron Island. This island is near a remote section of the Great Barrier Reef. You can only reach this island via boat or helicopter.  

Once you arrive on Heron Island, you will be happy to know there are more than twenty dive sites nearby. All those dive sites are perfect for sea turtle, shark, and humpback whale sightings.  

Fiji 

Beauty is everywhere in Fiji. Since there is so much to see on land, many people forget about entering the water for scuba diving here. Don’t make that same mistake on your next family trip.  

Go into the water to dive and see some of the most incredible marine life surrounding the coral reefs. If you really want to take your family adventure to the next level, head out on one of the shark dives. Don’t worry; everyone comes back in one piece!  

The Tuamotu Archipelago in French Polynesia 

Some of the best scuba diving in the world can be done in French Polynesia. A vacation on the Tuamotu Archipelago ensures you will spot gray reef sharks, wild dolphins, and manta rays. You simply need to find the best scuba diving locations. This is easy to do when you head out with a guide.  

Raja Ampat Islands in Indonesia 

Bali is the most visited destination in Indonesia, but I urge you to put the Raja Ampat Islands on your list for your next family vacation. These islands are in a remote area, which makes the dive sites untouched and perfect. This is one of the best scuba diving places in the world for peace and quiet.  

Maldives 

There are numerous atolls to dive into when you vacation in the Maldives. I could list them all for you, but how about starting with Ari Atoll, Baa Atoll, and North Male Atoll? Add in Hanifaru Bay, and you will do some of the best scuba diving of your life while on vacation here. Just keep an eye out for the reef sharks and whale sharks when you are underwater.  

Galapagos Islands 

Darwin’s Arch may longer be standing, but that doesn’t mean you should skip the Galapagos Islands for your next scuba diving trip. There is still so much to see near these islands, despite the cold water. Check out different diving sites so you have ample opportunities to see penguins, Galapagos sharks, marine iguanas, and so much more.  

The Bahamas 

The water is always crystal clear around the islands in the Bahamas. Usually, the most difficult part of planning a family scuba diving trip here is deciding where you want to go diving. And spend the rest of your time out of the water.  

I recommend considering Tiger Beach on Grand Bahama or heading out to the reefs in the Exumas.  

The Florida Keys in the United States 

You don’t need to leave the country to find one of the best scuba diving places in the world. The only coral barrier reef in North America can be found in the Florida Keys. You can easily scuba dive anywhere near this reef.  

However, if you want an even better scuba diving experience, head over to the Florida Keys Wreck Trek. This area contains nine different shipwrecks. The Vandenberg, Spiegel Grove, and Eagle are the most popular.  

These are the best scuba diving places in the world, and each one will offer you something unique during your family vacation. Only you know which one of these scuba diving destinations will check off all the boxes for your family. Historical Landmarks You’ve Missed During Family Vacations 

Mnajdra, Malta 

Malta is one of the top family destinations in the Mediterranean. And yet, most people have no idea that there are ancient ruins located within the country. The area of Mnajdra is a megalithic temple complex. It is located in southern Malta.  

These ancient ruins are thought to have been around five thousand six hundred years old. This means they are even older than the Pyramids of Giza.  

All the temples within these ruins were used for different purposes. One was used for healing and fertility. Another for religion. And yet another for astronomy. Visit Mnajdra in Malta during your next family vacation and see how incredible ancient times truly were.  

Kuélap, Peru 

Everyone heads to Machu Picchu when they travel to Peru for a family vacation. However, Kuélap is a fabulous area in the northern region of the country. You can hike to this ancient hilltop or ride up on a newly constructed cable car.  

Kuélap was built by the Chachapoyas people long before Machu Picchu was even a thought. When you arrive at the top of the hill, you will see approximately five hundred huts that sit in ruin. These huts were made from limestone and have intricate carvings. Amongst all the huts are llamas that graze in the lush meadows.  

Mérida, Spain 

Very few people remember that the Roman Empire reached as far as Spain at one point in time. A family vacation in Mérida will have you see some of the best Roman ruins in the country. There are numerous ancient buildings scattered amongst the modern ones in this city. You won’t find many other places in the world where a Roman temple sits directly next to a bar.  

Take the time to check out Casa de Mitreo and its mosaic floor, as well as the Hippodrome.

Koh Ker, Cambodia 

A visit to Angkor Wat will have you see the most popular temple in Cambodia. However, a drive two hours to the north will have you visiting the most fascinating one. Koh Ker has recently been excavated. There are currently around twenty monuments that can be seen.  

Hopefully, more of this site will be uncovered, so we can continue to learn about the people who lived here.

Consider a Cruise to a Remote Destination 

Papua New Guinea 

New Guinea is an area filled with islands. The main island is Papua. You can easily explore that large island during a family vacation. However, if you want to experience the authentic parts of New Guinea, you need to visit the other islands. The best way to do that is during a cruise. Most of the cruises in New Guinea stop at seven or eight ports of call. That’s a lot of islands to see during a family vacation!  

The best part of this cruise to a remote destination is you will see islands many other travelers have never seen. This is due to the fact that the only people who visit these islands are those that are on cruise ships.  

South Georgia  

South Georgia is a remote island in the southern Atlantic Ocean. There is no landing strip on this island. Therefore, the only way anyone can get there is via boat. If you choose to cruise to this remote destination, you will be greeted by the largest colony of penguins in the entire world. There are other animals living on the island. But no people. If you are looking for solitude, you will definitely find it on this island.  

This is one of the remote destinations you can visit during a cruise to the Falklands, as well as Antarctica.  

Faroe Islands 

Up in the northern Atlantic Ocean, you can head off the beaten path by taking a cruise to the Faroe Islands. The islands are part of Denmark. These volcanic islands have been around since at least the 8th century.  

It can be cold on the Faroe Islands all year long. Layers will be needed if you want to explore.  

The North Pole 

Another colder part of the world is the North Pole. Taking a cruise to the North Pole is one of the best ways to see the Arctic. This can be one of the more extreme adventures. It is important to be prepared for the journey with warm clothes and an “I can do” attitude.  

A couple of the activities you can do during a cruise to the North Pole include a hot air balloon ride, a helicopter tour, and a polar plunge.  

Easter Island 

Easter Island is one of the most remote destinations in the world. You will find this island a couple of thousand miles off the mainland of Chile. On this island, you will find a site called Moai. It is where massive stone statues are located. No one has any idea what the significance of those statues is or when they were put in place.  

These are the remote destinations you should consider when you want to cruise during a family vacation. Yes, your cruise will take you far away from the crowds and popular destinations. However, it won’t be an experience you will ever regret. Visit the Best Places Near the Equator 

Brazil 

The equator goes through the country of Brazil right in the Amazon. During your vacation near the equator, you can spend time in the city of Macapá. Inside the city, you can check out the Marco Zero monument and an 18th-century fort. I do recommend you venture into nearby French Guiana during your family vacation. This will allow you to check off two bucket list destinations at one time.  

Kenya 

Kenya is a fascinating place to visit. Especially if you want to take your family out on safari. I took a couple of my kids there a few years ago. We all had an amazing time checking out the wildlife.  

While planning your vacation in Kenya, you will want to consider adding Masai Mara, Meru National Park, Amboseli National Park, and Tsavo National Park to your list of places to see. Meru National Park straddles the equator, and it is quickly becoming a wonderful place to see wildlife once again.  

Indonesia 

Time near the equator in Indonesia means a vacation in Kalimantan. It is one of the best places to see orangutans out in the wild. You must ride down the Sekonyer River on a klotok to see the orangutans. But the journey is totally worth it.  

And if you don’t want to visit there, simply choose Bali for a vacation that will be perfect for everyone in your family.  

Maldives 

You will want to choose the atoll of Addu when you want to stay near the equator in Maldives. The snorkeling and diving in these southern islands are simply breathtaking. So are the palm trees that sway in the breeze.  

Uganda 

The best safari destination in Uganda is Queen Elizabeth National Park. This park happens to be right at the equator. Inside this park, you can see the infamous tree-climbing lions, as well as hippos, buffalo, and elephants. And yes, you will spot a few gorillas too.  

The busiest equator crossing is also in Uganda. The city of Kampala has a souvenir shop. It is the perfect place to buy all those gifts to take back home. You will also find a couple of sinks in this city. Run water into the sinks to see if the one on one side of the equator drains differently than the one on the other side.  

Ecuador 

The name of this country translates directly to the equator. So, maybe this should be the first of the best places near the equator to visit for your family vacation. The Middle of the World, or Mitad del Mundo, is only a short drive to the north of the city of Quito. There is a monument located there that has a globe on top. The globe marks a latitude of zero degrees. Grab a selfie at the monument before you explore the rest of the country.
