I recommend starting your journey at the German Emigration Center. It is located in Bremerhaven. And it is where many Germans boarded the ships to the New World.

The towns of Bavaria, Saxony, and Rhineland have lots of local archives. The church parishes in those locations can be helpful in discovering lost history as well.

However, one of the best ways to explore your heritage is through a guided Ancestral Village Tour. The tours can be tailored to your surname. You can tailor your tour to where your family lived in Germany as well.

Poland

I recommend attending folk festivals during your heritage travel in Sweden. Visiting the Viking museums will give you even more insight into your family’s past.

And you can’t go wrong while sweating out stress in a lakeside sauna. Hey, if your great, great grandparents could do it, so can you!

A couple other things you should do while reconnecting with your roots in Japan include participating in traditional tea ceremonies, learning calligraphy, and visiting the temples where your ancestors worshipped.

Château de Chillon is located on the shores of Lake Geneva. This is one of the most romantic castles in the world to visit during an empty nester vacation. Especially since you can see the Alps out in the distance, creating a dreamlike atmosphere.

When you are not admiring the lake and mountain views, check out the castle’s chapel and the gothic underground vaults.

Other incredible things to do while at Château de Chillon is enjoying a lakeside picnic and taking a boat cruise on Lake Geneva. You may also want to wander along the promenades in the charming town of Montreux.

Prague Castle is one of the largest ancient castles in the world. The architecture in this castle is a mix of Gothic, Romanesque, and Baroque.

Known as the Red Castle, Castell Coch is located in the woodlands outside Cardiff. The inside is decorated with hand-painted murals. Medieval romance was kept in mind while creating the ornate bedroom suites. And the best views of the area can be seen from the circular towers.

Start your visit with a leisurely forest walk around the castle. Then, after a tour of the inside, head to a nearby historic manor for afternoon tea.

Of course, you can’t skip past a stop in the charming town of Cardiff. The modern culture mixes well with all the historical features.

Eilean Donan Castle in Scotland

It shouldn’t be surprising that many of the most romantic castles to visit are in Europe. And many of those can be found in Scotland, Ireland, and Germany.

If you plan on vacationing in Scotland, and want to see more than one castle, let me recommend Eilean Donan Castle. This is one of the most iconic castles in the country. And its location on a tiny island where three lochs meet creates the perfect romantic atmosphere.

In fact, you and your partner will feel as if you stepped onto a romantic movie set when you arrive at this beautiful castle. The interior contains Scottish relics and artifacts. And the stone bridges and turrets create a picture-perfect medieval atmosphere.

Plus, the lake views change dramatically with the weather.

A unique adventure while visiting this romantic castle is taking a boat tour of the surrounding lochs. You will learn about the history of the area, while enjoying the gorgeous scenic views.

The Isle of Skye is only a short drive away. I highly recommend visiting there if time allows.

Blarney Castle in Ireland

A visit to Blarney Castle in Ireland will have you experiencing enchanting gardens and myths. And yet, despite feeling as if you stepped back in time, you will feel right at home.

You will tour the castle as you wait in line to kiss the Blarney Stone. Yes, I know kissing the Blarney Stone is cliché. And yes, I know it may not be what you want to do. However, it is worth the time you spend while you check this item off your travel list.

The Wishing Steps, castle dungeons, and other rooms of the castle will all be waiting for you at Blarney Castle. And when it is your turn, a guide will help you lower yourself backwards to kiss the infamous stone. Stop and look at your pictures before you leave, because I guarantee you will purchase at least one of them to put in your memory book.

After kissing the Blarney Stone, wander through the Poison Garden and the rest of the castle grounds. Then venture across the streets to do a little shopping at Blarney’s Woollen Mills. You will find that you can spend hours exploring the different floors filled with clothing, jewelry, home goods, and more.

Himeji Castle in Japan

Have you always wanted to vacation in Japan? Well, Japan has a few romantic castles to visit. So, you can easily check this country off your travel bucket list during your empty nester years.

Himeji Castle is one of Japan’s well-preserved samurai-era castles. The inside is filled with intricate wood. Outside, you will discover white walled towers. Surrounding the castle are cherry blossom trees. These trees bloom during the spring, making it the best time to visit this romantic castle.

Yes, Aysén is a remote region in Chilean Patagonia. But you will embrace the remoteness once you capture a glimpse of the breathtaking glaciers, towering peaks, and serene fjords.

There are so many thrilling adventures you can have during a vacation in Aysén. I recommend starting with a trek along the Cerro Castillo circuit. This is a multi-day trek that offers the most stunning mountain views in Patagonia.

The trails are challenging, yet rewarding, as they lead you to alpine lakes and jagged peaks.

If you need a low-key activity one day, take a cruise through the labyrinth of fjords. The fjords in Aysén are untouched by humans. Therefore, you will see plenty of whales, sea lions, and dolphins along the way.

Another amazing activity will take you through the Marble Caves via kayak. As you paddle through the ethereal caves, you will be mesmerized by the swirls of blue and white marble.

One last activity you should consider in this adventure travel destination is driving along the Buttercup Route. This scenic route will take you through quaint villages, as you pass by rolling green hills and rushing waterfalls.

Raja Ampat, Indonesia – An Adventure Travel Destination Plus Paradise

Do you and your partner love diving into crystal clear water? If you said yes, let me recommend vacationing in Raja Ampat in Indonesia.

This adventure travel destination is known as the Amazon of the Ocean. During your vacation, you will experience the most biodiverse marine ecosystem on the planet.

There are plenty of activities to keep you busy in this hidden gem of a travel destination. However, the most popular activities include kayaking, scuba diving, and snorkeling.

The waters surrounding Raja Ampat are considered a diver’s paradise. Snorkel and dive amongst more than six hundred species of coral, as well as fifteen hundred species of fish. You also won’t want to miss out on spending time with the manta rays and sea turtles.

Spend time on top of the water, as you kayak amongst the secret lagoons, mangrove forests, and towering limestone formations. And stay slightly further from the water during a hike to the breathtaking Piaynemo viewpoint.

The hike to the viewpoint is short. However, it is steep. The trek is worth the journey though, thanks to the stunning views of the lush islets and sparkling water from the top.

Lofoten Islands, Norway – Arctic Adventures Await

You can’t be afraid of cold weather when you choose to visit this adventure travel destination as empty nesters. A vacation in this Norwegian archipelago is an incredible place to kayak, hike, and surf. Of course, this is when you are not wandering around the charming fishing villages.

The best part about visiting this hidden gem travel destination during the winter is you can capture glimpses of the Northern Lights.

Start your empty nester vacation by kayaking through Reinefjorden. These waters will take you past many of the fishing villages and dramatic peaks of the Lofoten Islands.

Hiking the Reinebringen Trail will allow you to see panoramic views of Reine and the surrounding islands. This hiking trail is steep. However, it won’t be too bad, as long as you take your time.

While the Northern Lights can be seen from the Lofoten Islands during the winter months, the Midnight Sun is present during the summer. All you need to do is tell me which one of these magical experiences is highest on your list of things to see and I will plan your vacation accordingly.

After all, you won’t see some of the wildlife roaming around this island anywhere else in the world.

Start your vacation in Madagascar by trekking through Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park. You will see limestone pinnacles as you hike through this park.

Some of the villages in Madagascar can only be reached via the water. I recommend canoeing down the Manambolo River to see those villages. Of course, this trip will also allow you to pass through caves and gorges you wouldn’t see from the inner part of Madagascar.

No matter what you do, plan on spotting Indri lemurs, colorful chameleons, and other unique wildlife during your vacation in Madagascar.

I recommend visiting these countries during the Great Migration. You can easily spot thousands of animals making their way from Serengeti in Tanzania to Maasai Mara in Kenya. Of course, they will head back to where they came from a few months later.

While you can camp out during your whitewater rafting adventures, that isn’t your only option. I can book a room or suite at a luxurious hotel or resort nearby to ensure you get the pampering you need in between your adventures on the water.

After all, I know how important soaking tubs, spa treatments, and hot meals are after a day out fighting the rapids.

Alaska is one of my favorite vacation destinations. I have been numerous times either by myself or with family or friends. There are so many ways to experience Alaska. You can fly into the city of Anchorage or Fairbanks and simply stay there.

Or you can utilize boats and seaplanes to explore more of the state. However, my favorite way to explore rugged Alaska is via cruise ship. Your cruise ship will take you into areas you may not have time to see or areas you might have missed if you traveled another way. Plus, the excursions allow you to experience local cultures, traditions, and activities.

One of those activities is kayaking. Imagine kayaking through Kenai Fjords National Park or Glacier Bay. The icy waters in each are packed with marine life. So, as you are paddling along, you may come across a whale, sea lion, seal, or sea otter. A puffin, kittiwake, or gull may land on one end of your kayak.

I recommend having your camera ready to photograph everything you see while participating in any activity while on vacation in Alaska. After all, you will want to remember every moment forever.

Tuscany, Italy

There is no better place to rekindle the romance in your life than Tuscany. This Italian countryside is known for its world-class wines. So, sipping on fine wines during a few wine tastings should definitely be on your itinerary for your empty nesters vacation in Italy.

Of course, you probably won’t be able to resist visiting the art museums and even a few of the historical sites in this region. Adventures will be waiting for you in the medieval towns of San Gimignano and Siena too.

Although, if you are truly searching for a unique adventure, I recommend taking a cooking class or two while visiting Florence. After all, cooking together will allow you both to create new memories, as you learn something new about each other.

When you arrive in Charleston, you will be greeted with southern charm by everyone you meet. Learn your way around town by taking a historic carriage tour. It’s one of the best ways to discover places you want to see in depth later during your trip.

A walk along Rainbow Row is a must. And you can never go wrong when you take a few hours to explore Boone Hall Plantation.

The most exciting part of your vacation in Charleston, South Carolina though will be all the southern foods you eat. Breakfast and lunch will fill you up quickly. So, make sure you head out on thrilling adventures each day to ensure you are hungry enough for dinner at some of the renowned restaurants in the city.

Santorini, Greece

You can spend days exploring the gorgeous island of Santorini during your next empty nesters vacation. While all the Greek Islands are spectacular, Santorini is simply the best destination for empty nesters like yourself.

Head over to the Akrotiri ruins to explore before settling in on a sandy beach for the afternoon.

You can never go wrong with a catamaran cruise. While I love sunset cruises, you can easily take one at any time of the day. The afternoons are perfect for sitting at a cliffside winery, as you sip on some new wines. Just be prepared to have a few bottles of your favorites shipped back home.

Oh, and if you do sleep in one morning, head to Oia to watch the sunset one evening. It’s a sight you will never forget.

Kyoto, Japan

Tranquil gardens, serene temples, and rich culture will await you and your partner in Kyoto, Japan. As one of the best destinations for empty nesters, Kyoto will allow you to discover your true passions in life.

Start with a walk through the Gion District to see the traditional architecture of the country. The Golden Pavilion, or Kinkaku-ji, will have a powerful impact on your vacation in Kyoto. Expect to have past memories flooding back, while creating a new memory or two.

Get lost while wandering through the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest. And when I say get lost, I don’t mean actually getting lost. Just allow your brain to wander or start a conversation with your partner and see where it leads.

One of your favorite parts of your vacation in Kyoto will be participating in an authentic tea ceremony.

Queenstown, New Zealand – Best Bucket List Destination for Empty Nesters

This adventurous capital is completely surrounded by spectacular landscapes. And it is easy to escape the city to explore some of that stunning landscape too.

Do you remember the days when you wished you could have peace and quiet for two seconds? You can now enjoy that peace and quiet for an unlimited amount of time during your empty nester travels.

You can sleep in as long as you want in the mornings. Enjoy a nap without interruptions. And you can stay up as late as you wish without worrying about tiptoeing around while the kids sleep.

There won’t be a child asking a million questions as you visit a local attraction. And sibling rivalry will be something waiting for you when you return home.
