Have you been dreaming about a vacation in Ireland? If you have, you know this country is known for its lush green landscape. As well as it’s thrilling adventures and plenty of opportunities to drink a pint or two of Guinness.

One of my team members, Jen, took a trip to Ireland with her husband back in May. Today, she is sharing her adventures with you, so you can see what’s possible during your vacation in Ireland!

An Exhilarating Vacation in Ireland

Hey, everyone! I am so excited to share everything my husband and I did while on our exhilarating vacation in Ireland. This was one of my husband’s dream vacation destinations (and mine), so we made sure we told Tracy everything we wanted to experience. She made the entire planning process simple. If you have never had her plan a trip for you before, stop procrastinating! She’s amazing and you won’t regret having her on your side for every vacation you take.

Anyway, keep reading to see what we experienced during our trip to Ireland.

Weather in Ireland

An Exhilarating Vacation in Ireland - House and Field in Galway

First, I must be honest with you about the weather in Ireland. It can be rainy and cloudy most days of the year. Therefore, I recommend you pack accordingly with layers, raincoats, waterproof shoes, and umbrellas.

However, it is also best to be prepared in case it is sunny and warm during your vacation in Ireland.

Thankfully, we were prepared, because the day we arrived, it was sunny and in the mid-seventies. We were told by the locals that it was the first time the sun had been out in months. All the sheep were running around like crazy in the fields, because it was the first time they had been allowed outside in quite some time!

We were blessed with sunny and warm weather for our entire trip. It only rained a couple of times. And we were inside anyway during those rainy times, so we never truly got soaked like we thought we would.

Transportation in Ireland

There are numerous ways to get around Ireland. You can take the bus in Dublin. Taxis and Ubers are available in the major cities too. Renting a car is another possibility.

My husband and I thought about renting a car for our trip. However, after considering driving on the opposite side of the car, on the opposite side of the road, we decided against renting a vehicle. (Let’s just say we know our limits and embrace them for our own good)

Our choice of transportation ended up being taking a phenomenal tour throughout Southern Ireland via bus. This was a wise move on our part. Especially after seeing what the roads were like throughout the country.

In Ireland, the roads are very narrow. They were designed for horses and carriages, not cars. The turns from one street to another are very tight. There was one turn our bus driver made that was especially terrifying. At that corner, one person’s job is to sit outside and look for buses that are trying to make the turn. When they see a bus, they stop traffic at a specific point. The bus can then make the turn very carefully. The turn is so tight, you can see where the buses have hit the building on one side of the street. Pieces of that building are actually chipped away and missing.

I highly recommend not driving in Ireland unless you really want to. And if you do choose to rent a vehicle, make sure you add on insurance. It’s expensive but you will definitely need it!

Our Bus Tour of Ireland

As I mentioned above, we chose to take a bus tour throughout Southern Ireland. Tracy found one that offered everything we wanted and more.

Our tour was one of the smaller tours that are offered. There was a total of 28 people in the group, and everyone was wonderful. We made a couple of now lifelong friends on our trip. We only wish they lived closer to us, so we could continue to see them all the time. But that’s what future vacations are going to be for!

Day One: Flight to Ireland

We left our house midday to head to the airport to start our journey to Ireland. We flew from our local airport to Newark, where we then had to wait until our international flight left later that evening.

FYI, international flights normally take off at night, so you arrive at your destination early in the morning. This is excellent, because you don’t lose daytime hours up in the air.

While we didn’t sleep on the plane, we were more than ready to start exploring when we arrived in Dublin early the next morning.

Day Two: Dublin

An Exhilarating Vacation in Ireland - St Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin

We were met by our tour guide at the airport in Dublin. He took us to our hotel, so we could drop our luggage off. Our rooms weren’t ready yet, which was a slight bummer. However, we had dressed properly, so we could just head out on a walk to see some of the nearby sights. After all, we were quite excited to begin our vacation in Ireland!

We checked into our hotel room a couple hours later. After a quick shower and change of clothes, we grabbed a quick snack, and my husband had his first Guinness. I had wanted Pepsi, but most bars carried Coke products. We ended up going to gas stations and grocery stores, so I could get my Pepsi fix throughout the week.

We met up with the rest of our group late in the afternoon for a quick bus ride around Dublin. Our guide shared lots of information about the stunning Georgian Squares, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Trinity College, and much more during our drive.

The floozy in the jacuzzi was the funniest part of this drive. The statue is of Anna Livia Plurabelle, who was featured in James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake. While the statue used to be on O’Connell Street, she now resides within Croppies Memorial Park.

Dinner was at our hotel as a group. Most of us ate quickly and headed to our rooms for some much-needed sleep.

Day Three: Dublin, Kildare, Cashel, Limerick, and Ennis

An Exhilarating Vacation in Ireland - 2 Day Old Foal and Mama at Irish National Stud

When you take a tour in any country, you need to be prepared to stick to the schedule you are given. For this particular trip in Ireland, we knew we would be changing hotel rooms almost every single night. That meant placing our luggage outside our hotel room’s door before seven every morning. Which meant we needed to be up early to get ready and have the suitcases packed.

Breakfast was usually around seven. And breakfast almost always included a complete Irish breakfast. An Irish breakfast is scrambled eggs, sausage, ham (which they call bacon), roasted tomatoes, and black pudding.

After our breakfast buffet, we boarded our bus and headed to Kildare to the Irish National Stud. This horse farm breeds some of the best horses in Ireland and around the world. After learning about many of the champion stallions throughout racing history, we had time to wander through the nearby gardens.

An Exhilarating Vacation in Ireland - Rock of Cashel

Next was a drive to Cashel to see the Rock of Cashel and eat lunch. After lunch, we walked around a little before driving to Limerick. In Limerick, we drove by St. Mary’s Cathedral, King John’s Castle, and the Treaty Stone.

Bunratty Castle

An Exhilarating Vacation in Ireland - Bunratty Castle Reception Area

Everyone had free time in the evening, but most of us signed up for the medieval banquet at Bunratty Castle in Ennis. If you have never attended a medieval banquet, especially in a castle, you must add it to your vacation in Ireland itinerary!

We arrived at Bunratty Castle and climbed up the stairs to the reception area. Everyone was given a glass of honey mead before being led to our tables.

We were all seated at long tables. In front of us were a wine glass, water glass, bowl, plate, sharp knife, and a napkin. Remember, we were pretending to be in medieval times and forks were not a thing back then!

An Exhilarating Vacation in Ireland - Medieval Banquet at Bunratty Castle

Dinner consisted of pureed vegetable soup, which we drank from the bowl. Next was barbecue spareribs, roasted chicken, roasted potatoes, steamed broccoli and carrots. Yes, we ate all of that with our hands. Well, some of us stabbed the food with our sharp knives.

I don’t recommend making the same mistake I did and wearing a white button-down shirt for this meal!

Dessert was rastin, which is a Bramley apple and cinnamon crunch served with Chantilly cream. It was delicious and they gave us a spoon to eat it with!

A Little Extra Fun at Bunratty Castle

My husband ended up being one of the stars of the show at Bunratty Castle during our medieval dinner. The main person of the show came to sit with us for a few minutes and was asking my husband questions. He ended by asking him his name.

We didn’t think anything of it at the time, but then the person went up on stage and said there was a scoundrel in the room, and he was going to name the person. I immediately grabbed my phone to video what was happening, because I knew it couldn’t be a coincidence.

My husband was sent to the dungeon and had to sing in order to be released. It was an incredible addition to an already fun night. And I was quite happy it was him and not me!

Day Four: Ennis, Cliffs of Moher, and Galway

An Exhilarating Vacation in Ireland - Cliffs of Moher are There Somewhere Behind the Fog

This was probably the most anticipated day of our tour of Ireland. First, we didn’t need to switch hotels this morning, so we got to sleep in a little bit. Second, it was the day we were all waiting for. Our drive to the Cliffs of Moher!

Unfortunately, after two days of gorgeous, sunny weather, the clouds, fog, and rain moved in. The result was blocked views of the cliffs.

We were all bummed, but remember, you can’t change what Mother Nature has planned for the day.

After our disappointing views, we drove in the rain to Galway to do a little shopping and eat lunch. Galway is quite touristy, especially in the area we visited.

After our time in Galway, we headed to Rathbaun Farm to see the sheep and learn how to make scones. This was supposed to be the part of the trip my husband was dreading. And yet, it ended up being his favorite part!

An Exhilarating Vacation in Ireland - Baby Lambs at Rathbaun Farm

We watched a puppy sheep dog herd sheep. Pet the baby lambs while I asked if I could take one home. And then it was time to eat the scones we made when first arrived. They were quite delicious. Especially when paired with rhubarb jam with a hint of ginger.

Day Five: Ennis, Ring of Kerry, and Killarney

An Exhilarating Vacation in Ireland - Ring of Kerry

Every morning of our vacation in Ireland brought new adventures. We were getting tired of being on the go every day, so we were kind of happy that today’s itinerary included a drive along part of the Ring of Kerry.

The bus driver drove us to Killimer to board the ferry to cross over the Shannon estuary. We stopped at a local business to try a traditional Irish coffee. They offered coffee with whiskey and coffee with Irish cream. My husband approved of the Irish cream coffee, so we will be stocking up on that this winter. It will give him something to look forward to after being outside shoveling snow!

The rest of the day was ours to explore Killarney on our own. We took advantage of one of the extra excursions and went on a jaunting car ride. This isn’t your typical car ride though. It is a horse and carriage ride through the local forest to yet another castle.

Day Six: Killarney, Blarney, and Waterford

An Exhilarating Vacation in Ireland - Kissing the Blarney Stone

Day six is the day I had been waiting for the entire trip! It was finally time to visit Blarney and kiss the Blarney Stone!

As soon as we arrived in Blarney, we headed straight for the castle. I knew my husband would not want to wait in a really long line, just so I could kiss a stone.

We were one of the first groups there, so the line wasn’t too bad. When it was our turn, I was a little nervous. In order to kiss the Blarney Stone, you must lay on your back, grab a rail on either side of you, and lower yourself backwards to the stone. Thankfully, there are two people there to help you. And there are rails under you, so you can’t fall all the way to the ground.

I recommend purchasing the pictures afterwards, because trying to get a picture at the right angle is difficult.

After kissing the stone, we headed across the street to the largest store in Ireland. The World of Blarney Woollen Mills is three stories, and it is packed with anything you could ever want. I had to restrain myself from purchasing one of everything. Unless I wanted to purchase another suitcase or five.

Although, I am still kicking myself for not getting a wool blanket. I decided it wasn’t worth it since it could only be dry cleaned.

I thought about that blanket, while showing off all the other goodies I bought on the drive to Waterford. The House of Waterford Crystal was another highlight of the trip I couldn’t wait to see.

An Exhilarating Vacation in Ireland - Waterford Crystal Clock

During our tour, we got to see how the crystal is made from start to finish. And while I wanted a crystal tabletop Christmas tree, I knew I shouldn’t spend the hundreds of dollars it would cost.

Day Seven: Waterford, Kilkenny, and Dublin

An Exhilarating Vacation in Ireland - Kilkenny Castle

Day seven of our vacation in Ireland had us driving to Kilkenny. This is one of the quainter towns in Ireland. It was so quiet and not very touristy. Our guide recommended a coffee shop to us, but we couldn’t figure out where the door was to enter the building. We stood there waiting for people to either enter or leave, but everyone seemed content to stay inside.

So, we grabbed coffee and a pastry at another bar after walking around and shopping. We also wandered around the outside of Kilkenny Castle.

This was a low-key day with us arriving back in Dublin around lunchtime. We grabbed a bite to eat at a local restaurant. My husband ordered Guinness beef stew, which he said was the best meal he had had all week. Then we walked around the campus at Trinity College before heading over to St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

We were exhausted by the time we checked into our hotel. At first, we were going to order room service, but decided to venture out for a meal at the restaurant next door. Before we knew it, we collapsed in bed, fast asleep.

Day Eight: Dublin and Flight Home

This was a bittersweet morning. We had a really early flight, so we couldn’t say one last final goodbye to our new travel buddies in person. Our guide did wake up early to make sure we had everything, take us to the bus, and say goodbye. I was hopeful we could request him for future tours, but I guess it doesn’t work like that. Which is a shame, because he was amazing. If you have Tiarnan for a tour of Ireland, know you are in good hands!

We loved every minute of our vacation in Ireland. However, there is one thing we would have changed if we knew what we know now. That one thing is we would have arrived at least one or two days earlier. This would have given us time to adjust to the new time zone. And to do a couple more things on our to-do list that weren’t included in the tour.

We aren’t dwelling on that though. Instead, we are embracing the time and adventures we had during our vacation in Ireland, as well as our new friends. And we are currently having Tracy plan our next adventure, which is an Alaskan cruise.

Do you love attending festivals? If you do, I hope you try to attend a festival or two, as you are traveling the world! Festivals are an excellent way to immerse yourself in the lives of the locals. Eat local cuisine. Learn the local cultures and traditions. And make a few new friends at the same time. If you are planning a vacation in Ireland in the future, you should know there are plenty of festivals to choose from. Today, I am sharing some of my favorite festivals in Ireland. I guarantee one of these festivals will be near the top of your list of things to do in Ireland during your next vacation.

Check Out These Amazing Festivals in Ireland During Your Next Vacation

The Cat Laughs Festival

The Cat Laughs Festival is one of the favorite festivals in Kilkenny, Ireland. This is a comedy festival. It is held over a bank holiday weekend in June.

You will find yourself listening to, and watching, some of the best comics from around the world during this five-day festival in Ireland.

Festival of World Cultures

The very first Global Carnival in Ireland was the Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown Festival of World Cultures. This festival has been a popular local event for almost a decade.

During this festival, you will find yourself immersed in the local traditions and culture. Add in live music and plenty of local cuisine and you won’t know where to begin!

I recommend starting at the art exhibits before attending a workshop or cultural demonstration. Then listen to the music while you try a few new delicacies.

St. Patrick’s Festival

Check Out These Amazing Festivals in Ireland During Your Next Vacation - Marsh's Library and St. Patrick's Cathedral

Okay, you had to know that there would be a St. Patrick’s Festival in Ireland! March 17th is the day that St. Patrick died. So, while many people are not aware of this, the day is when we celebrate this patron saint of Ireland.

You will find St. Patrick’s Festivals throughout the country. However, the festival in Dublin is the largest. The city even has the largest parade with more than three thousand performers. It is best to arrive at the parade early because more than five hundred thousand people attend each year.

The rest of the day is full of music, dancing, and family fun.

This festival usually takes place over five days though. So, you won’t need to cram all the fun into a single day. During these five days, you can tour Marsh’s Library, which is three hundred years old. Or walk through the city to follow the steps St. Patrick himself took during his lifetime.

Check out what other things to do are available in Dublin during your next vacation.

Taste of Dublin

There are too many food-related festivals in Ireland to count. But one of the best ones is the Taste of Dublin. During four days in June, you can try all the local favorite food and drinks.

The marketplace is full of experts waiting to teach you about all the best ingredients and supplies. They can even show you how to craft the perfect cocktail! Your taste buds will be dancing by the end of the day.

Galway International Arts Festival

The Galway International Arts Festival happens in July. It has offered the locals art-filled fun for more than forty years now. This festival includes theatrical productions, dance performances, and musical performances.

All the events take place in numerous venues around the city. You will even find impromptu street dancing performances, live music jam sessions, and giant puppets.

Fleadh Cheoil

Ireland has plenty of traditional music to listen to. One of the best times to hear it all is during the Fleadh Cheoil Festival. You will find this festival in the small town of Drogheda.

This festival has been taking place for more than seventy years now. Throughout the event, there are live street performances, local orchestras, and organized concerts. I can help you obtain tickets to the events you want to attend, as I am planning your vacation in Ireland.

National Ploughing Festival

Check Out These Amazing Festivals in Ireland During Your Next Vacation - Tractors Plowing Fields During the National Ploughing Festival in Ireland

One of the unique festivals in Ireland is the National Ploughing Festival. It is held during the month of September. This is an outdoor agricultural festival. The main event is a plowing competition.

This festival is held over the course of three days. It is the largest agricultural festival in the world.

Galway Oyster Fest

Another September festival in Ireland is the Galway Oyster Fest. The Galway Flat Oyster is only available between September and April every year. And what better way to celebrate its arrival each year than with a festival!

Head over to Galway Bay Harbour to eat some oysters and drink a few pints of Guinness.

Cork Chocolate Festival and Baking World

The month of November brings the Cork Chocolate Festival and Baking World. An entire weekend is filled with chocolate and baked goods.

During this event, you can attend workshops. Or watch a bunch of chocolate making and baking demonstrations. However, the best part is always participating in the thirty-minute tasting sessions.

Viennese Christmas by Candlelight

December brings the holiday season and Viennese Christmas by Candlelight. This festival is held within St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin. It is a one-night event filled with festive orchestra music.

Puck Fair

Puck Fair is a festival held during the month of August. This is one of the oldest festivals in Ireland. It has been held for more than four hundred years.

A wild mountain goat is crowned as the King of Killorglin for the three days of the festival. And yes, the mountain goat is released back into the wild at the end of the events.

This festival is packed with storytelling, music, dancing, concerts, and fireworks. There is also a horse fair and midnight madness.

These are some of the amazing festivals in Ireland you will want to consider attending during your next vacation. There are so many others, and I can help you find the one that is perfect for your family vacation in Ireland. And in between festivals, you should definitely check out a few of the gorgeous destinations in Ireland

So, are you ready to have me create a personalized itinerary that includes a festival in Ireland for your next vacation?

Ireland is a beautiful country. But for some reason, so many travelers choose to spend all their time in Dublin. If you want to get away from the big city in Ireland, I recommend traveling through Northern Ireland with your family. There are plenty of amazing attractions and gorgeous views in this part of the country. Today, I am sharing an itinerary that will have you exploring during a family vacation in Northern Ireland. Your family’s itinerary may look slightly different than this one since I will be personalizing it to include what you want to do. But this itinerary will give you an idea of what is possible during your family’s vacation in Northern Ireland.

7 Extraordinary Days Exploring During a Family Vacation in Northern Ireland

Day One: Dublin

Okay, so if you were nervous you were going to miss all the excitement in Dublin while on vacation in Northern Ireland, don’t worry! You will be landing at the airport in Dublin and have a couple of days to spend there.

Once you have checked into your hotel, it will be time to head out into the city and experience the best of Dublin. Your first stop will be the Guinness Storehouse. Your family will tour all seven floors of the storehouse, while learning about the history of the Guinness brand. At the end of the tour, you get to drink a pint of Guinness beer.

Day Two: Dublin

7 Extraordinary Days Exploring During a Family Vacation in Northern Ireland - Trinity College in Dublin

Hopefully you slept well after your first day in Dublin, because you will hit the streets early today for a walking tour. Your private guide will take you to St. Stephen’s Green, Merrion Square, Dublin Castle, Christchurch, and St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

Before returning to your hotel, you will stop at Temple Bar and Trinity College. The Book of Kells will be the highlight of your time at the college.

In the afternoon, it will be time to visit the Jameson Distillery. During your distillery tour, you will learn the history of this whiskey and how it is made.

Day Three: Dublin to Belfast

You will be up early on day three of your family vacation in Northern Ireland. This is so your driver can take you to Belfast. During the drive, you will stop at Newgrange and the Mourne Coast.

Newgrange is a Neolithic passage tomb. This tomb has been around for more than five thousand years. Over at the River Boyne, you will see where the Battle of the Boyne took place. Your family may have time to see some of the other ruins in the area before continuing to County Down.

That mountainous region is full of ancient history. A stop in Newcastle will allow you to stretch your legs before you reach the town of Downpatrick. This is where Ireland’s patron saint, St. Patrick, was laid to rest.

Before you know it, you will be in Belfast. After dinner, and a walk around town, you will be more than ready for a good night’s sleep.

Day Four: Belfast

If you didn’t manage to walk around when you arrived in Belfast, don’t worry. Your family will have plenty of time to explore this city today. Your day will begin with a guided drive through Belfast. Your guide will take you along Falls Road before heading to the Crumlin Road Jail, Europa Hotel, and the Crown Bar.

If that doesn’t sound fascinating, you can choose to take a full-day tour of Belfast. During that tour, you will wander through Cathedral Quarter to see St. Anne’s Cathedral, Donegal Place, and the Grand Opera House.

Before you head back to your hotel, you can stop at the Belfast Castle Estate and the Titanic Museum.

Day Five: Belfast to Donegal

It will be another day in the car on day five of your vacation in Northern Ireland. Today, you will be taken to Donegal. But not before you visit the Glens of Antrim. This is a collection of nine verdant valleys.

After that stop, it will be time to see the Causeway Coast, as well as the Giants Causeway. This is one of the Natural Wonders of the World. You will want to stay there forever, but your guide will convince you to go back in the car to see Dunluce Castle.

After you have seen all the sights for the day, you will arrive in Donegal, ready to relive all the memories you made throughout the day.

Day Six: Donegal to Galway

You won’t be in Donegal for long, as you must head to Galway. During today’s drive, you will stop at the Moycullen Riding Centre. Hop onto the back of a horse and take a ride through the countryside with your family.

After your exciting ride through the countryside, it will be time to continue to Galway. Spend a couple hours exploring, as you will need to return to Dublin in the morning.

Day Seven: Galway to Dublin

Today is your last day of vacation in Northern Ireland. You will need to return to Dublin to catch your flight back home. Thankfully, you will have plenty of memories to talk about during your flight. Unless of course, you are all so tired, you simply sleep the entire time.

There are so many other things you can do while exploring during a family vacation in Northern Ireland. I can add as many of them as you want to your itinerary when I personalize it for your family’s vacation in Ireland.

So, are you ready for me to create a personalized family vacation itinerary for your trip to Northern Ireland or another destination?

Lush green spaces, fascinating attractions, and delicious foods are only a few of the things that should attract your family to Southern Ireland. There are so many things to see and do in this beautiful country. You can experience Southern Ireland in as little as eight days if you plan your itinerary properly. I would love to help you with that by personalizing a Southern Ireland itinerary for your family vacation. Until then, I want to show you the possibilities using this eight-day itinerary of Southern Ireland.

Experience Southern Ireland in 8 Days

Day One: Dublin

On the first day of your family vacation in Ireland, you will land in the city of Dublin. This is the perfect time to get acquainted with the city. Take it slow, as you walk around and recover from potential jet lag

If you really want an authentic start to your Ireland family vacation, head over to the Guinness Storehouse. Take a tour, learn how Guinness is supposed to be poured, and drink a pint or two.

From there, walk to Phoenix Park. This large park is home to the Zoological Gardens, Victorian Flower Gardens, and Glen Pond. Take the time to check out the Magazine Fort, Prehistoric Burial Chamber, and the Papal Cross. Ashtown Castle and Demesne may be of interest as well.

Head back to your hotel early to get some rest before your next big day in Dublin.

Day Two: Dublin

Experience Southern Ireland in 8 Days - Long Room Library at Trinity College

Yes, you really need at least two days to truly explore the best of Dublin during your family vacation. An early start is a must if you want to see the Book of Kells at Trinity College. This 9th century manuscript is quite popular. Lines form early at the Old Library to see the pages that are on display for the day.

Next, you can choose to see the EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum, Christ Church Cathedral, or St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Or relax on St. Stephen’s Green with a picnic lunch. The choice is always yours when I am personalizing your vacation itineraries.

Day Three: Travel to Kilkenny

Day three of this amazing journey through Southern Ireland will be a day of travel. However, don’t worry, you will still see a few of the best things in Ireland.

Begin the day by heading towards the Wicklow Mountains. This is where you will discover the Powerscourt Estate, Gardens, and Waterfall. There are a few trails you can hike along before enjoying a picnic near the rushing water.

Trying to tear yourself away from the beauty of this area will be difficult, but the beauty of Glendalough will be waiting for you. Glendalough is known as the valley of the two lakes. It has a rich history, gorgeous views, and an abundance of wildlife.

I recommend walking through the natural gardens before checking out the nearby waterfalls.  Don’t skip the Visitor Center, because you can learn quite a bit about the area there.

At the end of the day, you will arrive in Kilkenny, more than ready for dinner and a good night’s sleep.

Day Four: Kilkenny

Experience Southern Ireland in 8 Days - Kilkenny Castle

There are so many fascinating things to do in Kilkenny. One day may simply not be enough but try not to rush through any of your experiences.

Kilkenny Castle should be at the top of your list of things to see on day four of your family vacation. Don’t skip past the Kilkenny Design Centre, which is located in Kilkenny’s Castle Yard.

St. Canice’s Cathedral and Round Tower are other highlights in Kilkenny. Although, you may want to skip past them if you want to spend more time sipping beer at Smithwick’s. Learn how Smithwick’s came to be in the 1700s and how their beer is brewed. Then sit at the bar and taste the different variants of Smithwick’s before claiming your all-time favorite.

Day Five: Travel to Kerry

You’ll be getting deeper into Southern Ireland on day five of your family trip. This is the day when you will travel to Kerry. Stops at the Rock of Cashel and the English Market will keep the day fun and exciting.

Allow for a couple hours at the English Market. You will need that much time to explore all the stalls filled with clothing, food, spices, soaps, and more. This is an excellent opportunity to try some traditional Irish foods.

Day Six: Ring of Kerry

Experience Southern Ireland in 8 Days - Ring of Kerry Landscape

It will be a long day in the car, as you travel the one hundred eleven miles of the Ring of Kerry. Thankfully, there are many stops you can make along the way. Keep your camera’s batteries charged, so you don’t miss out on family photos at the popular destinations.

I recommend stopping at Rossbeigh Beach, Skellig Michael, the Derrynane House, Muckross House, ross Castle, and Torc Waterfall. Although, you could technically stop at every sight along the way to really make this a magical vacation.

Day Seven: Travel to Limerick

You may want to sleep in a little later this morning before heading down to Limerick. You may need it after a busy day on the Ring of Kerry.

Today’s options include touring the Dingle Peninsula or visiting the areas of Lough Gur and Adare Village. You may even drive straight through to Limerick with no stops if you really need the downtime. Then make it an early night, so you are bright eyed for the Cliffs of Moher.

Day Eight: County Clare

One of the best things to see in Ireland is the Cliffs of Moher. So, you could say the best was saved for last on this itinerary of Southern Ireland. Family pictures can be taken anywhere near these cliffs. Just be prepared for a bird or two to fly by since this is a protected area for seabirds.

Spend as much time as you want walking along the cliffs. Then explore Burren National Park or simply enjoy the sights close to your hotel.

Your family vacation in Ireland officially ends tonight and you will fly back home the following morning.

This itinerary shares all the experiences you can have during a family vacation in Southern Ireland. However, your itinerary may look slightly different, since everyone prefers unique things while on vacation. I can help create a Southern Ireland itinerary that meets your family’s needs, so you can fall in love with this country on your own terms.

A family vacation in Ireland can be a dream come true for many people. And yet, during the planning stages of a family trip to Ireland, so many people struggle to determine where they should visit. I understand how difficult it can be since this country is large. And I understand why many families simply choose to spend their entire vacation in Dublin. However, if you don’t plan on vacationing in Ireland more than once, you really need to explore more of the countryside. Today, I am going to share the gorgeous destinations in Ireland that should be on your must-see list. I guarantee you will make memories in every one of these destinations in Ireland with your family.

Gorgeous Destinations in Ireland

Cliffs of Moher

The Cliffs of Moher are over in County Clare. If you are spending time in Galway, these cliffs are not too far away. These cliffs are four hundred feet high. They continue down the Atlantic coastline for five miles. The views from these cliffs are stunning. I recommend you take the time to visit these cliffs if possible. In fact, they will be one of the first things I recommend adding to your itinerary when I personalize it for your family trip. After all, seeing the Cliffs of Moher is one of the best things to do in Ireland

Galway

Since I just mentioned Galway, I thought you should know that it is one of the best destinations in Ireland. It is an incredible place to spend a couple days, as you all wander along the cobblestone streets. A couple of the more notable attractions in Galway include the Spanish Arch and the Claddagh.

Kilkenny

Gorgeous Destinations in Ireland - Kilkenny Castle

Kilkenny is one of the smallest cities in Ireland. That is why so many people skip past it during their travels. However, if you can manage to stop by, even just for a few minutes, you will be rewarded with the beauty of medieval buildings and small shops. Oh, and a visit is the only way you can see Kilkenny Castle.

Inishowen

Inishowen is the best place to view the Northern Lights in Ireland. You must plan your family vacation carefully if you want to capture these dancing lights in the sky. However, if you miss your chance, this peninsula destination is still incredible. Especially if you plan to drive the Wild Atlantic Way.

Dingle Peninsula

This peninsula points out into the Atlantic Ocean. It is full of rolling green hills, sheep, and cliffs looming over the water. A visit here can have you taking a ferry out to the Blasket Islands. Those islands are where Irish writers spent their time being productive. Nowadays, the only thing left on the islands is the heritage museum. Visit it to see how much has changed over the years.

Benbulben Mountain

Benbulben Mountain is where all families who love hiking will want to go during their vacation in Ireland. Paved trails will allow everyone in your family to hike to the top of the mountain. While you are up there, try to draw some inspiration like Yeats did while writing his poetry.

Coral Beach

You were totally wrong if you thought you couldn’t go to the beach while on a family vacation in Ireland. Coral Beach can be found in Carraroe in County Galway. This isn’t your typical sandy beach though. It is a beach filled with coral, so make sure you are all wearing the appropriate shoes.

Water shoes are best, so you can wander around the rock pools. You can go swimming and snorkeling at this beach in Ireland. Pack your bathing suits and towels if you think this is a possibility.

Kinsale

Ireland is quite green (probably from all the rain). However, you can find some other shades of color scattered throughout the country. One of the best destinations in Ireland for color is Kinsale. You will find this charming fishing town in County Cork. All the pubs, galleries, stores, and homes are painted bright colors. It is just what you need for a few memorable selfies of your family vacation.

Killarney National Park

Gorgeous Destinations in Ireland - Torc Waterfall in Killarney National Park

Killarney National Park is forty-one square miles. It is located in County Kerry. This is the only place in the country where you can see wild red deer. These deer have been living in Ireland since the Ice Age.

Keep your camera ready for the deer, as well as all the reflective lakes you will see. Another popular destination is the Torc Waterfall. Take a picnic lunch and enjoy the beauty of this national park in Ireland.

Skellig Michael

If you are ready for an extreme workout, head out to Skellig Michael in County Kerry. Your family must take a boat ride out to this island. The ride can be rough at times, but worth the effort.

Once you reach the island, you can climb the six hundred steps that lead to the 6th century monastery. See, I said you would get an extreme workout during this adventure! And yes, once you reach the top, you must go back down all those steps to get back to the mainland.

Cobh

In County Cork, you will find the quaint town of Cobh. Dozens of cruise ships stop in this town every year. As long as you arrive at a different time than the cruise ships, you will find this to be a peaceful town. Take the time to wander amongst the colorful homes before heading over to the cathedral that looms over the harbor.

One of the most popular attractions in this town is the commemorative museum that shares details of the Titanic. The ship was supposed to arrive here for its final stop.

These are the gorgeous destinations in Ireland you will want to consider adding to your itinerary during your family vacation. I can easily add many of them as I am personalizing the itinerary for your family trip. All you need to do is tell me what your family is interested in seeing and doing during this memorable time away from home. I will then have you all making the memories that matter, as you explore this beautiful country.

So, are you ready to have me create a personalized family vacation itinerary for your trip to Ireland or another destination?

Does your family have even a teeny tiny part of Irish in your heritage? Is that one of the main reasons you want to visit this popular destination? Or do you simply want to experience a tasty Guinness the way it was meant to be poured, as well as listen to the locals talk with their accents? There are so many reasons to take a family vacation in Ireland. Almost as many as there are things to do in Ireland. However, what happens when you want to spend all your time in Dublin? Does your list of things to do get shorter? Or are there plenty of things to do in Dublin to keep your family busy for your time away from home? I can guarantee you will find plenty of things to do in Dublin to add to your vacation itinerary.

Today, I am going to share some of the best things to do in Dublin to help you get started. I can then come up with others, as I am personalizing your family vacation itinerary in Dublin.

Best Things to Do in Dublin

Visit Trinity College

You don’t need to venture too far to visit the oldest college in Ireland. Trinity College was founded in 1592. Some of the alumni from this college went on to become renowned writers. Two of those writers were Oscar Wilde and Jonathan Swift.

Upon your arrival at Trinity College, begin by wandering around the Gothic style halls. Then head over to the Old Library. This library is where you can capture a glimpse of The Book of Kells. This illustrated book was completed by monks in 800 AD. Only one page is on display at a time to ensure the book does not get damaged by light.

Enter St. Patrick’s Cathedral

The largest cathedral in Dublin is St. Patrick’s Cathedral. This cathedral is said to have been constructed on the site where St. Patrick baptized converts hundreds of years earlier. While inside, take the time to look at the vaulted ceilings, as well as the intricate details.

You may also visit the tomb of Jonathan Swift at this cathedral. He was one of the writers who graduated from Trinity College. One of the books he is known for writing is Gulliver’s Travels.

Relax at St. Stephen’s Green

Best Things to Do in Dublin - St Stephen's Green

One of the best things to do in Dublin on a nice sunny day is relaxing at St. Stephen’s Green. This beautiful park has been open to the public since 1880. The kids can run around the playground. Everyone can then take a walk to see the monuments or check out the garden.

Pack a picnic lunch, so you don’t need to leave early.

Visit The Irish Emigration Museum

Anyone who is interested in learning more about the Irish Emigration is encouraged to visit this museum in Dublin. The exhibits within this museum include one thousand five hundred years of history. More than one hundred million people left Ireland during this time. The museum shares where they went, how they lived, and how those choices impacted the country as we know it today.

Be Unique by Visiting a Jail

You don’t need to just see all the popular attractions while on vacation in Dublin. You can also see a few unique sights like the Kilmainham Gaol. This jail shows the darker side of Irish history. Many famous prisoners spent time in this jail between 1796 and the 1920s. Executions and hangings were also performed here.

This jail is now a museum. I recommend taking the guided tour, because you learn more about the people who spent their days within these walls.

Check Out Dublin Castle

Numerous parts of this castle have been torn down and rebuilt over the years. The current oldest structure of Dublin Castle is the Record Tower. It dates back to the 13th century.

You can take the self-guided tour of this castle. However, if you want to see more than the basics, I recommend the guided tour.

Have a Drink of Whiskey at the Jameson Distillery Bow St.

In the Irish language, the word whiskey translates to the water of life. One of the best ways to learn more about whiskey and the history of Jameson is to visit the Jameson Distillery on Bow St. Take the forty-minute guided tour before sitting down to a whiskey tasting.

Drink a Little Guinness

Best Things to Do in Dublin - Guinness Storehouse

After getting your fill of whiskey, it will be time to head to the Guinness Storehouse. A self-guided tour of the seven floors is available. On this tour, you will learn about the history of Guinness, as well as the brewing process. Your favorite part though will be drinking a pint while sitting at the rooftop bar.

Go Shopping on Grafton Street

If your kids love to shop, head over to Grafton Street while on a family vacation in Dublin. This happens to be the premier shopping district in the city. The stores are full of familiar brands, as well as unique items.

Oh, and if you don’t feel like shopping, this is still a wonderful area to walk around. Especially if you love to watch people.

See the Mummies at St. Michan’s Church

History and archaeology lovers may want to visit St. Michan’s Church to see the mummies down in the basement. Some of these mummies are more than eight hundred years old. This is one of the most unique experiences you can have while on vacation in Dublin.

Another place to visit tombs is Glasnevin Cemetery. Numerous famous people are buried at this cemetery.

Peruse the Books at The Winding Stair Bookshop

The Winding Stair Bookshop happens to be one of the oldest independent bookstores in Dublin. This bookstore sells both new and used books.

On the second floor of this building, you will find a restaurant. This restaurant was opened in 2006 when the bookstore was purchased and reopened. The menu items include seasonal produce and local ingredients.

Grab a book first and start reading it while waiting for your meal. Or enjoy some food and then peruse the books until you find something you have been wanting to read.

Take a Hike

There are plenty of hiking trails near Dublin. However, none of them are as popular as the ones that lead to Howth Cliff. The trails to the cliffs range in difficulty and time to complete. Start with the easy ones if your family is new to hiking. Or if you are short on time.

Take a Walk to the Poolbeg Lighthouse

There are two trails that will take you to the Poolbeg Lighthouse. The shorter trail begins at the parking lot at Pigeon House Road. That trail takes an hour to walk.

The longer trail begins at Sandymount Strand. This walk is about two and a half hours. Each trail takes you to the exact same place. So, all you need to do is decide how far you want to walk to see the beauty of the shoreline.

Ride the Hop On Hop Off Bus

If you have no idea what you want to see or do in Dublin or want an easy way to get acclimated to the city, ride the Hop On Hop Off Bus. You can purchase a ticket that is valid for a day or two days. Then hop on and off as many times as you wish during that time.

These are some of the best things to do in Dublin during a family vacation. There are many other things you can do during your family trip in Dublin. I can help you decide which things to do are perfect for your family, as I personalize your vacation itinerary.

So, are you ready to have me create a personalized family vacation itinerary for you in Dublin or another destination?

If you said yes, I would like to invite you to click here to schedule a personalized family vacation planning session with me. When you click on the link, you will be taken directly to my digital calendar to schedule a time that is convenient for you.

Have you ever wanted to travel to a new destination with your family to see epic scenery? Do you want to be surrounded by the locals, as you sip on a pint and laugh uncontrollably? Maybe you want to explore the countryside, despite the rain that often falls? This is all possible when you choose to take a family vacation in Ireland. Today, I am going to share some of the best things to do in Ireland. This list will help you get started with the planning process for your vacation. All the ideas you gather can then be used when I create a personalized family vacation itinerary for you in Ireland.

Best Things to Do in Ireland

Pour the Perfect Guinness

Okay, so I know one of the main reasons you are heading to Ireland is to drink Guinness the way it is meant to be enjoyed. Pouring a Guinness is an art. One that is not fully appreciated here in the US. You can actually learn how to pour the perfect Guinness during your family vacation in Ireland. Then you won’t have an excuse to drink bad Guinness when you get back home!

All you need to do is plan to visit the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin. I can make sure this experience is part of your vacation when I personalize your itinerary.

Kiss the Blarney Stone

Best Things to Do in Ireland - Blarney Stone Wait Time Sign

The best time to visit Blarney Castle in County Cork may not be right after you have been drinking a lot of Guinness. Especially since you need to lay down and lower your body over the side of the main tower to reach the stone. Your family will have quite the adrenaline rush, as you are tackling this must-do in Ireland!

Stick around at this castle for the day and then indulge in a four-course meal for dinner. Live entertainment is included in this medieval setting.

Take a Boat Ride Near the Cliffs of Moher

One of the best things to do in Ireland is take a boat ride near the Cliffs of Moher. This is an excellent way to see the sea tower, called An Bhreannan Mor, up close. Nearby is a sea cave that was used in the filming of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

Most of the tours to the Cliffs of Moher begin in the town of Doolin. The tours usually last two hours and are dependent on the weather.

If you don’t want to head out on a boat, you can always walk along the top of the cliffs. This option will allow you to see O’Brien’s Tower too.

I recommend seeing these cliffs from above and below during your family vacation in Ireland if you have the time.

Other cliffs you may want to check out during your vacation in Ireland include the Kilkee Cliffs, Fair Head Cliffs, Kerry Cliffs, and the hidden cliffs on Arranmore Island.

Check Out Where the Titanic Was Constructed

You may know how the Titanic met its end, but did you know this massive ship was constructed in Belfast? There used to be a thriving shipyard in Northern Ireland. The Titanic was built right there along the docks.

This shipyard is now a Titanic themed destination. You can explore the museum to learn more about the history of this ship.

Cross Over the Carrick-a-Rede Bridge

The Carrick-a-Rede Bridge can be found near the Giant’s Causeway. Everyone wants to see the natural phenomenon that’s the Giant’s Causeway. However, don’t skip out on crossing over the Carrick-a-Rede Bridge.

This is a rope suspension bridge that is one hundred feet above the Atlantic Ocean. The bridge is three hundred fifty years old but has been reinforced. That doesn’t mean you won’t have a heart racing experience while crossing it!

Ride the Cable Car to Dursey Island

If you are not in the mindset to tackle a rope suspension bridge, maybe you will feel better taking a cable car ride. The cable car to Dursey Island is the only one in the country. This cable car ride is only about ten minutes. Your family will go over Dursey Sound on your way between the mainland and the island.

Visit the Oldest Pub in Ireland

Best Things to Do in Ireland - Sean's Bar - Oldest Pub in Ireland

There are tons of pubs in Ireland. During your family vacation, I recommend visiting the oldest pub. Sean’s Bar was established in Athlone in the year 900. Grab a stool inside and become part of history with your family.

Visit Trinity College to See the Book of Kells

The Book of Kells was created by monks during the 9th century. It is considered a book of the Gospels and is written in Latin. The calligraphy is beautiful. However, it is the gilt gold with delicate illustrations that turned this book into a masterpiece. You can see this book at Trinity College.

You cannot flip through all the pages of the Book of Kells when you are on a family vacation in Ireland. This precious manuscript is displayed under lights. Only one page is shown at a time to ensure the book is never damaged.

Watch a Hurling Match at Croke Park

Sporting events are a big draw in Ireland. In fact, you can say attending any of them is one of the best things to do in Ireland. Especially if you take the time to watch a hurling match at Croke Park. The matches are held during the summer months.

Go Hiking in the Wicklow Mountains

There are numerous hiking trails in Ireland. But the best place to go is the Wicklow Mountains. Inside the national park, you can find trails for all abilities. If you are looking for a challenge though, I recommend the Wicklow Way. This is an eighty-one-mile trail that takes you through forests and bogs.

Go Surfing at Mullaghmore

The water of the Atlantic Ocean is going to be practically freezing at any time of year when you are on vacation in Ireland. That shouldn’t stop your family from surfing there though! Head out to Mullaghmore, which is in County Sligo. This is the best spot for big waves in the country.

Take a Book Lovers Walking Tour

James Joyce wrote his books in Ireland. Your family can learn more about this author, and his books, during your vacation. One of the best ways to learn about James Joyce is to take one of the book lovers walking tours. I can arrange for one of these tours while I am personalizing your family vacation itinerary.

Check Out the Assaranca Waterfall

Over in County Donegal, you will have a surprise waiting for you near the side of the road. The Assaranca Waterfall is located near the Maghera Caves. The winding cascade of water will have you wanting to stay just a little bit longer, as you all take it in.

This is one of the best things to do in Ireland since it doesn’t involve hours of hiking to see such a beautiful sight!

Visit Kilkenny Castle

Best Things to Do in Ireland - Kilkenny Castle

You shouldn’t just stop at one castle while you are on vacation in Ireland. Kilkenny Castle is another popular castle in the country. This castle was constructed in 1195. You can actually tour this castle, as well as the park and gardens.

I recommend purchasing your tickets in advance and I can take care of that for you as I am personalizing your family vacation in Ireland.

Visit the Oldest Public Library in Dublin

Marsh’s Library is the oldest public library in Dublin. Inside this library, you will find twenty-five thousand books, as well as three hundred manuscripts.

Attend a Festival

If you plan your family vacation in Ireland carefully, you may be able to attend one of the amazing festivals. St. Patrick’s Festival is one of the best festivals. It is held in March every year. Other incredible festivals include Temple Bar Tradfest, Rose of Tralee, and Puck Fair.

Drive The Ring of Kerry

Driving around The Ring of Kerry is one of the best things to do in Ireland. The starting, and end, point for this drive is Killarney. I recommend driving this road counterclockwise. This will ensure you don’t get stuck behind all the tour buses.

Plan an entire day for this family adventure. Along the way, you can stop at Derrynane Beach, Killarney National Park, Torc Waterfall, and so many other attractions and destinations.

Oh, and if you don’t want to drive, I can always arrange for your family to be on one of those tour buses.

See the Puffins on Rathlin Island

Over in County Antrim, the best place to see puffins is Rathlin Island. This island happens to be a puffin sanctuary. Visiting the Light Seabird Centre will have you learning about the puffins and other birds that spend time on the island.

Once you have finished in the Centre, head out on a walk along the rocky cliffs and wild sea stacks. Just make sure you have your camera, so you can capture all the puffins living their best life.

These are only some of the best things to do in Ireland. There are many others, and we can determine what other options should be on the personalized family vacation itinerary I create for you.

So, are you ready to have me create a personalized family vacation itinerary for your trip to Ireland or another destination?
