Best Island Vacations 

Crete, Greece 

When you decide to take a family vacation in Crete, Greece, you will be amazed at the beauty you see everywhere. This island is full of pink sandy beaches. Ancient history can be found within the charming towns. The best part is the traditions are different than those found on other Greek Islands.  

Start your vacation in Crete by walking around the medieval town of Rethymnon. Then venture out to the Cove of Balos and the Samaria Gorge. The pink sand beach of Elafonisi should also be on your list.  

Dominica 

Instead of vacationing in St. Lucia, head over to Dominica. This island offers the same beauty without the massive crowds. It is the perfect place to walk along beaches covered in volcanic sand.  

While at the beach, you can snorkel and scuba dive. Time inland can be spent hiking the many trails on this island. I recommend choosing a few that lead directly to the waterfalls.  

Lanai, Hawaii 

I love heading to Hawaii for vacation. Lanai is one of the best island vacations because it isn’t as touristy as Maui, Oahu, and the Big Island. Your days can be spent relaxing on the beach or heading off into the sunset during a horseback ride. You may even choose to take a 4×4 to explore the rugged areas of the island.  

Snorkeling in Hulopoe Bay is a must. As is visiting Keahiakawelo, which is Lanai’s Garden of the Gods.

Mauritius 

Mauritius is an island everyone will love. It has warm tropical weather. Plenty of thrilling adventures. And calm water that is perfect for snorkeling and swimming. Head to the west coast for the best beaches and sunsets.  

I recommend swimming with the turtles and dolphins during your vacation in Mauritius. Catamaran cruises around the island are also popular.  

Mallorca, Spain 

Mallorca is one of the Balearic Islands in Spain. This island is full of adventures, history, and nature. You get the best of both worlds since you can spend time in the big city and out on the beach.  

Start your visit by exploring the Serra de Tramuntana region. It is within that region where you will find stunning Majorcan villages. Visit wineries to find new wines. And definitely spend time with the locals while visiting this piece of paradise.  

Lord Howe Island, Australia 

Lord Howe Island is quite small at five miles in length. However, don’t let its size dissuade you from visiting. This is an island that offers luxurious accommodations. You can easily indulge in many of the activities if you are a few of the four hundred visitors allowed on the island at a time.  

Your days here should be spent hand-feeding the fish at Ned’s Beach. Watching the turtles at Settlement Beach. And mingling with the locals at an event. You can also head out into the water to kayak, swim, or surf. On land, you can hike or do a little stargazing at night.  

Galapagos Islands 

The Galapagos Islands are the perfect place to visit when you want to see incredible wildlife. I recommend visiting the Galapagos Marine Reserve to see the blue-footed boobie, Galapagos penguin, and marine iguanas.  

I also recommend doing a little island hopping while in the Galapagos. This will ensure you can see the many diverse islands within this part of the world. If your travels take you to Floreana’s Post Office Bay, take the time to participate in a centuries-old tradition. Pick up the mail that needs to be taken to the island you are returning to.  

Vancouver Island, Canada 

Sometimes, you don’t need warm weather for the best island vacations. Vancouver Island in Canada will give you the charming family vacation you are looking for with cooler weather.  

The first thing you should know about vacationing on Vancouver Island is you should never spend all your time in the city of Victoria. The island is three hundred miles long. There is plenty to see and do on the entire island!  

Head to the small town of Tofino on the west coast. It is one of the best places for outdoor adventures. You can go on whale watching and bear watching tours there.  

Tikehau, French Polynesia 

A hidden gem in French Polynesia is Tikehau. This remote island will allow you to get as far away from everyone as possible. I recommend staying in an overwater bungalow. This will allow you to see the marine life in the crystal-clear water below.  

Spend your time snorkeling, kayaking, and watching the sunset from one of the pink sand beaches. Oh, and start your mornings with fresh croissants. You won’t regret eating them every single morning.

Best Mediterranean Destinations for Your Family Vacation 

Pompeii, Italy 

If your family loves history, then Pompeii may check off all the boxes during your next family vacation. The town of Pompeii was completely destroyed when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 CE. The ash from the eruption preserved the town until the ruins were discovered centuries later.  

Walking through Pompeii will have your family stepping back in time. You can wander the streets to see what the locals were doing on the fateful day of the eruption. In one home, you will see how bread was being baked into loaves just before everything was covered in ash.  

Sidi Bou Said, Tunisia 

Sidi Bou Said in Tunisia almost looks like parts of Santorini, Greece, were picked up and placed in the area. The buildings are all painted white. And the roofs are bright blue. This is the perfect family vacation destination if your family wants to explore cultural treasures.  

While you can spend hours wandering around, you may prefer to simply relax near the Bay of Tunis. Or head out on a boat to cruise the Mediterranean.  

Alexandria, Egypt 

Changes have been abundant in Alexandria over the years. However, that doesn’t mean this city should automatically come off your list for a family vacation. The original library has been replaced with a modern version. Your favorite place to spend time, though, may be the Montazah Palace. The gardens there are spectacular.  

Gibraltar, United Kingdom 

The area of Gibraltar marks where the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean meet. While it used to be called the Pillars of Hercules, it is now called The Rock. Barbary macaques, or wild monkeys, live at the top of a cliff. It is the only place you will see these monkeys in all of Europe. They are known for stealing food from unsuspecting families.  

Barcelona, Spain 

There are so many things to do and see in Barcelona. However, your intent for your family vacation may be to focus on the art of Antoni Gaudi. A favorite is Park Güell. And don’t forget about Sagrada Familia, even though it isn’t completed yet. It’s only been more than one hundred years since this cathedral was started. Hopefully, by 2026 we can see the final product.  

If you are searching for a more adventurous activity, hike up Montserrat. Or simply walk along Las Ramblas.  

Calanques National Park, France 

This is the only national park in Europe that surrounds urban areas, as well as forested and coastal areas. You will find this park in the French Riviera. Search for the inlets during your visit. There is almost always a hidden beach near the end.  

This is also an excellent place to go snorkeling with all the marine life in the water.  

Split, Croatia 

If you don’t want to deal with the crowds in Dubrovnik, Split offers a unique alternative for a family vacation. Start by exploring Diocletian’s Palace. Then head out onto the streets to explore the rest of the ancient history in the city.  

Athens, Greece 

The last of the best Mediterranean destinations for your family vacation in Athens. This ancient city is home to Acropolis and other ancient sites. Sit in a traditional coffee shop during your visit to try authentic Greek coffee. Or simply do some people-watching while sipping your favorite drink.  

These are the best Mediterranean destinations you should consider for your next family vacation. There are others, and we can discuss those if you don’t see one you like on this list. Breathtaking Mediterranean Islands for Your Family Vacation 

Sardinia, Italy 

One of the best Mediterranean Islands for luxurious vacations in Sardinia. This Italian getaway is where the Emerald Coast, or Costa Smeralda, is located. Choose one of the seaside resorts that offer a private beach for your family vacation. This will ensure you won’t need to wander too far for the perfect stretch of sand.  

Of course, the beach isn’t the only highlight in Sardinia. The upscale boutiques are perfect for shopping adventures. And all the restaurants offer delicious Italian cuisine.  

Malta 

There are three islands within Malta. Each one offers history and stunning landscapes. One of the most popular activities in Malta is scuba diving. Military wreck sites dating back to WWII are directly off the coastline. Add in the underwater caves near Comino, and you may find yourself in the water more than you are out.  

On land, you can explore ancient cathedrals and the Old City of Mdina. Although, if you are looking for solitude, head over to the island of Gozo. It is the Malta Island that is the most secluded.  

Santorini, Greece

Santorini is known for its romance. However, it is also the perfect option for a family vacation. Everyone will love visiting the black sand beaches. They make quite the statement with all the white buildings in the distance.  

One of the best ways to explore Santorini is by hiking. A six-mile trail from Fira to Oia is the most popular. Hike along it to see as many of the traditional villages on the island as possible.  

Hvar, Croatia 

Croatia normally falls further down the list for family vacations in the Mediterranean. If you truly want to make your family vacation special, I recommend bumping Croatia up on the list. The island of Hvar is quite interesting.  

Your days can be spent diving to wreck sites that date to the 1800s. Robinson’s Beach will have you avoiding the crowds. And the most spectacular sunset can be seen from Hula Hvar.

Cyprus, Greece, and Turkey 

The island of Cyprus is actually part of the countries of Greece and Turkey. It is an excellent way to check two countries off your travel bucket list. In the northern parts of the island, you will discover castles and Old City Walls. Historical mosques and a 400-year-old Turkish Bath will be waiting for you in Nicosia.  

Down south, it’s all about traditional villages and UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Choose the part of the island that will interest your family the most. Or explore it all while making those memories you know you will remember forever.  

Sicily, Italy 

Another beautiful Italian island is Sicily. A family vacation here will include ancient history, delicious cuisine, and hikes to the craters of Mount Etna. Add in cable car rides and time on the beach, and Sicily may be your new go-to vacation destination.  

Corsica, France 

The last breathtaking Mediterranean Island on my list is Corsica. This is the perfect island for your family if everyone loves hiking and the great outdoors. There are numerous hiking trails in Corsica. You can also wander through the Scandola Nature Reserve.  

These are my favorite breathtaking Mediterranean Islands. You should consider visiting at least one of them for one of your future family vacations. Only you know which one your family will personally love. So, talk to them and figure it out. Then head out and make those memories with your kids. You won’t regret a moment of it.
