Freedom Trail in Boston: Explore Must-See Sites During Your Family Vacation

Boston Common – The First Stop on the Freedom Trail in Boston

Most tourists like yourself begin their Freedom Trail journey at Boston Common. This is one of the oldest public parks in the country. The park has approximately fifty acres. Centuries ago, this park was a pasture for Puritan settlers. The military then took it over for their use.

Today, you will see families having picnics, people running, and during the winter, ice skating on the pond.

Park Street Church

Park Street Church was built in 1809. “My Country, Tis of Thee” was first sung publicly in this church in 1831. When you arrive at this Freedom Trail site during your family vacation in Boston, point out the two-hundred-seventeen-foot steeple to the kids.

Granary Burying Ground

Old cemeteries hold lots of history. The Granary Burying Ground dates back to 1660. Numerous notable people are buried here. The most famous people include Paul Revere, John Hancock, and Samuel Adams.

As you wander around, have your kids point out the oldest headstones. Or have them point out all the people they learned about in history class in school.

Old Corner Bookstore – Unique Stop on the Freedom Trail in Boston

A family vacation isn’t a family vacation until you have spent time inside a bookstore! Thankfully, the Old Corner Bookstore on the Freedom Trail in Boston isn’t any ordinary bookstore.

Nope! This building was constructed in 1718. And it was used by a Boston publishing company in the 19th century. In fact, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Harriet Beecher Stowe both had books published by this company.

I recommend wandering through this building, searching for historical items. And of course, making a purchase or two before you leave.

Old State House

The Old State House was constructed in 1713. It was where the colonial government met many years ago. It was also where those in government witnessed the infamous Boston Massacre in 1770.

I recommend going inside to explore the interactive exhibits. Your family can also stand on the balcony. It is on that balcony where the Declaration of Independence was first read in Boston.

Faneuil Hall Marketplace – A Popular Stop on the Freedom Trail in Boston

The Faneuil Hall Marketplace has been a part of Boston’s history since 1742. At that time, merchants and fishermen sold items to the locals. However, it wasn’t long before prominent people like George Washington and Samuel Adams used this area to give inspirational speeches.

This marketplace received major renovations back in the 1970s and it looks slightly different nowadays. Currently, there are approximately eighty shops, restaurants, and pubs at Faneuil Hall. And yet, your family can still see, and imagine, the history that took place at this site on the Freedom Trail in Boston.

Old North Church

April 18, 1775, was an important night in Boston’s history. This church was where Robert Newman signaled to the locals that the British were approaching.

The Old North Church is the oldest church in the city. You can see the family names from years ago on the private benches.

I recommend climbing the steps to the top of the tower to see the panoramic views of the city. Feel free to say, “one if by land, two if by sea”, while at the top to reenact history.

There is a museum tucked away into the gift shop next door. So, make sure you check that out before you continue along the Freedom Trail during your family vacation.

Paul Revere House

Everyone knows the important role Paul Revere played when the British were arriving to attack. However, not many people have seen his home.

Paul Revere’s home was built in 1680. He lived in that home from 1770 through 1800. It is the oldest home in the city.

You can tour his home during your family vacation in Boston. Inside, you will see the original furniture, as well as some of the silver he produced.

Bunker Hill Monument

You can see the Bunker Hill Monument well before you reach it, as you are walking along the Freedom Trail in Boston. This shouldn’t be surprising since it towers over the city.

If your children are old enough, I recommend climbing the two-hundred-ninety-four steps to the top of the monument. You should also take a selfie once you reach the top to commemorate your efforts. And to remember how you managed to persuade your kids to keep going.

USS Constitution and Museum – The Last Stop on the Freedom Trail in Boston

The USS Constitution is known as Old Ironsides. It is the oldest warship still in the water today.

She first set sail on July 22, 1798. Her final voyage was July 21, 1997. The USS Constitution is currently a museum, so board the ship with your family for a tour. The tours occur every half hour. Your tour guide will be dressed in clothes from the Revolutionary War.

The Witch House

Out of all the houses that were part of the Salem Witch Trials, the main one was the Witch House. This house is officially known as the Jonathan Corwin House. Corwin was a judge.

When you tour his house, you will see many of the furnishings. As well as how the family lived back in the 1600s. While you can take a self-guided tour, I guarantee you will get so much more out of the guided tour options.

Witch Dungeon Museum

Watch live reenactments of the Salem Witch Trials at the Witch Dungeon Museum. They use actual transcripts from the trials.

The dungeon is a replica of the one used to hold witches before their trial.

House of Seven Gables

The House of Seven Gables is a museum, as well as a colonial museum from 1688. This home ended up being famous after Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote a book by the same name.

After you tour this house, you must tour the house next door as well. The reason for this is it was where Hawthorne was born.

Old Burying Point Cemetery

This is the oldest cemetery in Salem. You will find it directly behind the Salem Witch Trials Memorial.

Many famous residents from Salem are buried at Old Burying Point Cemetery. But the most popular person is Mary Corey. She was accused of being a witch all those years ago. She played a key part in the darker parts of history in this town.

Salem Witch Museum

One of the best ways to learn the history of the Salem Witch Trials is to explore the exhibits at the Salem Witch Museum. Inside this museum, you will find official trial documents, as well as thirteen life-sized stage sets with different scenarios.

You can easily see these attractions and landmarks on your own during a visit to Salem during any road trip. However, you will get much more out of these sites, and so many others, if you take one of the many tours. The Provincetown Theater was once known as the Provincetown Theatre Workshop. It was founded in 1963.

Visit the Provincetown Art Association and Museum

The most popular museum in Cape Cod is the Provincetown Art Association and Museum. There are twenty-five hundred items within the permanent collection. The forty different rotating exhibits include all those items.

The Provincetown Art Association and Museum was founded in 1914. While it focused on pieces by local artists in the beginning, it has expanded its collection since that time.

Walk Along the MacMillan Pier

There is so much to explore on the MacMillan Pier. So, you will want to add a few hours into your itinerary for your visit.

Race Point Lighthouse

The Race Point Lighthouse is not that far from Race Point Beach. So, make sure you add both to your itinerary for the same day. This lighthouse was constructed in 1816 and recently restored.

The best time to visit this area of Provincetown is as the sun is setting. But no matter when you visit, you will have the chance to see whales out in the water.

Best Things to Do in Boston 

Take a Walk on the Freedom Trail 

One of the most popular historic sites in Boston is the Freedom Trail. This trail is two and a half miles long. During your walk, you can stop at numerous museums, historical sites, churches, and cemeteries.  

You can take a guided walking tour, or head out on your own for this walk. Depending on how much time you have, you may not be able to stop at all the sites. However, you should try to stop at the following sites on the Freedom Trail: 

• Boston Common – Walk through the oldest park in the US. 
• Granary Burying Ground 
• Old Corner Bookstore 
• Old State House 
• Faneuil Hall 
• Paul Revere House – You can tour this house to see how the Revere family lived. 
• Old North Church 
• USS Constitution 

Check Out the Marine Life at the New England Aquarium 

This aquarium isn’t huge. However, it is an excellent place to spend a few hours getting close to marine life. Sea lions, seals, penguins, stingrays, sharks, and more can all be found within the exhibits.  

Quite a bit of the marine life can be seen inside the two hundred-thousand-gallon saltwater Ocean Tank. Others are in the touch tanks or outdoor pools.  

I recommend visiting here before heading out on a whale watching adventure. Although, we will want to plan your time at the aquarium carefully. This is a popular field trip destination. It is usually crowded throughout the week.  

Go Out on a Whale Watching Tour 

One of the best things to do in Boston is head out onto the water to see dolphins and whales. The tour guides seem to know where the whales and dolphins are spending their time each day. So, there is a high chance you will see the creatures you want to while on this family adventure on the water.  

Take a Stroll on the Esplanade 

The Esplanade is a three-mile path that goes along the Charles River. You can easily walk along this path. However, there are lots of people who will be riding their bikes along it too. Take the time to stop and watch the boats out on the water.  

Visit the Isabella Stewart Gardener Museum 

If you need to choose one of the museums in Boston to visit, I recommend heading to the Isabella Stewart Gardener Museum. Inside, you will discover a massive art collection, as well as books, manuscripts, and historic objects.  

Keep an eye out for the detailed architectural elements scattered throughout the museum. And take a break in the courtyard if you have the time.  

Grab a Bite to Eat at High Street Place 

You will need to eat to stay fueled for your family vacation in Boston. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from in this fabulous city. But if your family wants different things, you will want to visit High Street Place.  

This is not your usual food court. This is a high-end eatery with some of the best food in Boston. Someone can have a bagel piled high with pastrami from Mamaleh’s while everyone else grabs a sandwich elsewhere. Artisanal donuts from Blackbird are a must for breakfast for the whole family.  

Oh, and champagne can be purchased from Moët & Chandon.  

See, you really can’t go wrong with a visit to High Street Place!  

Wander Through the Public Garden 

So many people cross through the Public Garden in Boston without giving it a second thought. Don’t do this during your family vacation in Boston!  

Take the time to walk alongside the lagoon to check out the flowers. Or indulge in a ride in the lagoon on one of the Swan Boats. Maybe enjoy a picnic nearby, as you talk with the kids and make a few memories.  

Read at the Boston Public Library 

Reading is always a good thing to do at the Boston Public Library. However, there is so much more you can do within this building.  

Head over to the Norman B. Leventhal Map Center to see more than two hundred fifty thousand geographic objects. Take an Art & Architecture Tour to see some of the architectural gems in the building. Or attend one of the free events that are held throughout the year.  

Go Shopping on Charles Street 

Charles Street is within the famed Beacon Hill area in Boston. It is one of the best places to take family pictures in front of Federal-style brick row houses and on gaslit corners. But you will also love shopping while walking along this street.  

Beacon Hill Books & Café is a bookstore and cafe located inside a townhome. It is a wonderful place to purchase books or simply hang out. You may also want to purchase some truffles from Beacon Hill Chocolates for a little treat.  

If your family can’t get enough of bookstores while on vacation, head over to the Brattle Book Shop. This bookstore is located near West Street. They have three floors of used books. Plus, they fill carts and shelves in the alley. Let’s just say, if you can’t find what you’re looking for at this bookstore, you probably won’t find it anywhere!  

Make Reservations at the Lookout Rooftop 

The Lookout Rooftop is one of the best rooftop bars in Boston. You must have a reservation to spend time sipping cocktails on this rooftop.  

If you are searching for a family friendly bar in Boston, I recommend Cheers Beacon Hill. All ages are welcome there and the food is good too.  

Watch a Red Sox Game 

You can’t go to Boston during late spring, summer, or fall and not catch a Red Sox baseball game at Fenway Park. Grab pictures of the Green Monster. Eat a hot dog or two. And hopefully watch a winning game.  

Oh, and if you miss baseball season, you can take a behind the scenes tour of Fenway during the off-season.  

Shop at the SoWa Farmer’s Market 

On Sundays, head to the South End of Boston to go shopping at the SoWa Farmer’s Market. Vintage items, entertainment, and food trucks can be found at the SoWa Open Market nearby. You can easily spend a good part of your day exploring this section of the city. 

Visit the Museum of Fine Arts 

The Museum of Fine Arts is where you will find the world’s largest collection of ancient Egyptian treasures. Head to the European Wing to see the Claude Monet gallery. Another gallery holds ancient coins, while another is full of works by John Singer Sargent.  

Go Shopping at Faneuil Hall  

Okay, so I mentioned Faneuil Hall when I was saying walking the Freedom Trail was one of the best things to do in Boston. You don’t need to walk the trail though to go shopping at this marketplace. You can simply head over there to shop at the four main buildings. Those buildings are Faneuil Hall, Quincy Market, North Market, and South Market.  

The oldest building is Faneuil Hall. It was constructed back in 1742. The other buildings were added later to create space for the more than one hundred shops and restaurants found there today.  

This is quite a touristy area. Keep that in mind if you do decide to visit during your family vacation in Boston.  

Explore the Massachusetts State House 

The Massachusetts State House is located on land that used to be John Hancock’s cow pasture. This building was completed in 1798, so it has been in place for quite some time. The dome was installed at the top in 1802 by Paul Revere. At that time, it was copper, but has since been covered with gold.  

Tours of this state house are offered throughout the week. It is best to take a guided tour, so you don’t miss any of the history shared inside.  

Learn How Beer is Brewed at the Samuel Adams Brewery 

A guided tour of this brewery will have your entire family learning how the beer is made. These tours are perfect if you love tasting new brews. Or you just want to enjoy a drink when the tour is finished.  

It is important to note that the Samuel Adams Brewery is outside the city center. But it is still worth a visit if you have the time.  

Take a Ferry to the Boston Harbor Islands 

Not everyone wants to spend days in a busy city like Boston. If your family needs to escape the hustle and bustle for a little bit, take a ferry to the Boston Harbor Islands.  

There are thirty-four islands in all. However, the most popular islands to visit include:  

• Spectacle – Perfect for hiking adventures 
• Georges – Perfect for those who love history 
• Peddocks – This island offers a little bit of everything 
• Lovells – Best for beach lovers 
• Grape 
• Bumpkin 
• Thompson 

Visit the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum 

Most people seem to want to learn more about President Kennedy and his short term in office. One of the best places to do this is the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum. Inside, you will find exhibits filled with his presidential papers, memorabilia, and even a replica of his desk in the Oval Office.  

Another space is filled with items that were Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’.  

Experience the Boston Children’s Museum 

Younger kids will love the exhibits at the Boston Children’s Museum. The interactive exhibits will have your kids learning about science, culture, health, art, and so much more.  

Construction lovers will enjoy spending time in the Construction Zone. Others will love creating music inside The Common.  

Plan on spending a little more time than you planned at this museum. Kids usually can’t get enough and don’t want to leave.  

Walk Along the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway 

The Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway is one and a half miles long. It is an outdoor space that links multiple gardens and parks together in an old highway tunnel.  

This walkway is busy throughout the year. However, during the summer months it is even busier thanks to the summer concert performances, food festivals, and other weekly events.  

Learn About the Boston Tea Party 

Anyone who is interested in learning more about the Boston Tea Party needs to visit the Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum. Two of the three ships have been recreated. Those ships are the Eleanor and the Beaver. You can explore them both during your visit.  

Your family can also check out the exhibits at the museum, which includes an authentic tea chest from the Boston Tea Party.  

Take a Boston Duck Tour 

Short on time while on a family vacation in Boston? Or want to see the sights quickly?  

Well, taking a Boston Duck Tour will have you seeing all the important attractions in a short amount of time. This amphibious vehicle will have you exploring the streets and the river, as your tour guide shares information about everything you are passing by.

Longfellow Bar 

The Longfellow Bar can be found just upstairs from Alden & Harlow in Harvard Square. This bar has a two-story lounge, as well as a seasonal roof deck. It is one of the best places to enjoy a drink with a view in the city.  

You can all order the basic wines and beer at this bar in Boston. However, it is the cocktails that this bar is known for. Try The Story, which is made with Jameson black barrel, yellow chartreuse, serrano, and peach. The chamomile honeydew vodka in the Sweet Creature is always a hit too.  

They have a small menu of foods that pair well with all the drinks. Consider the hickory smoked flat wings, grilled rosemary focaccia, or the Longfellow messy fries to start.  

The Warren Tavern 

You will need to escape the city for a little bit if you want to check out The Warren Tavern with your family. This is the oldest tavern in the state. It is located in Charlestown, which is right across the Charles River.  

Once you step foot inside, you will be following the footsteps of historical people like JFK, George Washington, and Paul Revere. Order your favorite brews and pair them with items like the short rib tacos or the Thai chicken lettuce wraps.  

Then sit back and relax, as you immerse yourselves in the lives of the locals.  

Sullivan’s Tap 

Out of all the best bars in Boston, there is one sports bar that is considered a must-visit. Sullivan’s Tap is also the oldest sports bar in the city. To say everyone in the city arrives here to watch a game may be an understatement. Arrive early if you want a seat for the game while on a family vacation in Boston.  

Oh, and remember, this is a Boston bar. So, any Boston team jersey is accepted. I would advise you to not wear a Yankees jersey unless you want to enjoy a ‘rousing conversation’ along with your drinks.  

The Tall Ship 

One of the more unique bars in Boston is The Tall Ship. You will find three large bars on the two hundred forty-five-foot ship moored on Pier One. There is also a patio next to the ship for those warm days when everyone wants to be near the water.  

Grab one of their magnificent cocktails or stick with a pint of beer. Just don’t skip the freshly shucked oysters in between games of cornhole with the locals.  

Fool’s Errand 

Fool’s Errand is one of the newer best bars in Boston. It opened to rave reviews in 2018. This bar used to be standing room only, but recently reopened with sixteen seats and an outdoor patio. During your bar visit, you can drink European cocktails and wine while indulging in bar snacks.  

Favorite menu items include the fancy pub cheese, burrata, and crispy pork empanada. Save room for the strawberry rhubarb shortcake or order a slice to go.  

Drink 

A visit to Drink in Boston will have you using your imagination when ordering a beverage. There is no menu at this cocktail bar. Instead, the bartender will ask you what you want or what your preferences are. The latter is perfect if you want to try something new but have no idea what that might be.  

As for the food, I suggest ordering churros. They are served with a warm chocolate dip. Although, if you want real food, the Drink burger and fries are the way to go.  

Daiquiris & Daisies 

You will discover both classic cocktails and creative drinks at this bar in Boston. One of the best things about this bar is you can spend as much time there as you wish. Quick drinks in between sightseeing are an option, as are long leisurely drinks throughout the afternoon or evening.  

I recommend the pineapple daiquiri, but the blueberry daisy, Big Papi’s salsa, and Pavarotti are all excellent choices too.  

Trillium Brewing Company 

There are a couple of different Trillium Brewing Company locations in Boston. Whichever one you choose to visit is fine since it is all about the beer anyway. I recommend starting with one of the seasonal brews or requesting a sampler so you can try as many as you can.  

Cheers Beacon Hill

Cheers Beacon Hill can be found on Beacon Street. It used to be called Bull & Finch. This bar was used as inspiration for the television show, which is why the name eventually changed. You can sit at the bar or a table with your family and pretend you are part of the Cheers family.  

This is the best bar in Boston for food, drinks, and making memories. Stop in the store before you leave to purchase a few souvenirs to remember your visit.

The Puritans arrived years later and started the Massachusetts Bay Company.

It would be quite some time until the American Revolution started. That period included the Boston Massacre, Boston Tea Party, Revere’s infamous ride, and the siege of Boston. The city’s population grew during the potato famine in Ireland, which was during the 1840s.

The fire of 1872, which started in the basement of the Tebbetts, Baldwin, and Davis dry goods warehouse, destroyed a good portion of Boston. Thankfully, the fire did not destroy some of the most important historical buildings in Boston. If it had, the Boston we know today wouldn’t exist.

Spring in Boston

Early spring in Boston can still mean snow and cooler temperatures. However, as the season progresses, the temperatures climb to the 60s during the day. The nights cool down substantially though and there is always an excellent chance of rain during this season.

Summer in Boston

The temperatures rise to the 70s and 80s during the summer in Boston. Most days are warm and comfortable, thanks to the ocean breeze. However, there are days when the humidity levels rise to unbearable levels. These months are typically dry, but you never know when a summer storm will hit.

Fall in Boston

Most people arrive in Boston during the fall, because the temperatures cool down slightly. Yet the weather can still be warm, it just isn’t as humid as it is during the summer. As the season progresses, the temperatures will begin to drop, and it is possible to see snow as early as November.

Winter in Boston

Snow is common in Boston and it is not unheard of them to have a massive storm where snow piles up. Once you add that snow to the colder temperatures, you may decide this time of year is not for you. However, if you don’t mind the cold and snow, you will discover this city is perfect for creating magical memories with your family during this time of year.

What to Pack for a Vacation in Boston, MA

Packing for a family vacation in Boston can be tricky, especially if you are visiting during early spring or late fall. Those times of the year may require summer apparel or winter apparel, depending on what Mother Nature decides.

However, the warmer months in Boston usually require shorts, t-shirts, sundresses, and sandals. Cooler months require pants, long-sleeved shirts, and sweaters. During the winter, coats, hats, gloves, and boots are a must.

Boston is a city that requires a lot of walking, so I recommend packing a pair of good walking shoes. I usually take two pairs, so I can rotate them during my visit.

Activities to Embrace While on Vacation in Boston

As we are planning your family vacation in Boston, you are going to realize you have almost too many options. Honestly, this is a good problem to have, because it means you won’t be walking around wondering what to do next. It also allows your family to do a couple of things you may have not considered during past family vacations.

One of the first things you must do while visiting Boston is to walk the entire Freedom Trail. This trail is two and a half miles long. As you walk along this trail, it will lead you to sixteen different historical sites. While you can walk this trail on your own, I can also plan for you to have a tour guide for this adventure.

Going on a cruise of Boston Harbor can be fun for the whole family. However, if you are going to head out on the water, I recommend taking a whale-watching cruise. You must plan your visit for the months of May through October if you want to see whales though. The whales migrate to warmer waters for the rest of the year.

If you are interested in getting away from the hustle and bustle of the city for a few hours, I recommend heading out for a family hike. The Chestnut Hill Reservoir is not too far from the city. Hingham’s World’s End is another possibility your family will love.

At the end of the day, you may want to sit back and relax while taking in the sights. If this is something you enjoy doing on family vacations, a ride on the swan boats in the Public Garden is a must. A guide will take you on a fifteen-minute ride up and down the lagoon, as ducks swim around you.

Other family activity options in Boston include:

• Walk along the cobblestone streets throughout the city

• Watch a sporting event
• Wander through local museums
• Go on a college tour

Top Places to See in Boston

Unless you have a full month to spend in Boston during your next family vacation, you are definitely not going to see everything this amazing city has to offer. However, when we create an itinerary, we can make sure you can check the most important destinations off your list.

If you choose to walk along the Freedom Trail, you can quickly check sixteen items off your list. The Paul Revere House, Old Granary Burial Ground, Old South Meeting House, Old North Church, and the USS Constitution are a few of the amazing places you will see during your walk.

You will also stumble upon Faneuil Hall. I recommend planning a couple hours at this attraction, because it is an excellent place to do a little shopping. There are also street performers out in the square, so you can add a little entertainment to your visit. You may want to plan your visit at Faneuil Hall around lunchtime, so you can visit one of the numerous food stalls.

Of course, you can grab your lunch to go and enjoy it over in the Public Garden or Boston Common. Quiet can also be found at the Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park.

If you are in the mood to learn something exciting during your family vacation in Boston, I recommend visiting the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum. Other museums that may interest your kids include the Boston Tea Party Museum, Harvard Art Museums, Museum of Science, and the Museum of Fine Arts Boston.

The Big E

The Big E is the nickname for the Eastern States Exposition Festival held every year in the state of Massachusetts. While this festival is not in the city of Boston, it is a short drive away and the perfect option for vacationing families. This festival is held over multiple days between the end of September and the beginning of October. Your time at The Big E will be filled with live music, entertainment, food, amusement rides, parades, and shopping at arts and craft vendor booths. You may even want to spend some time with the farm animals.

Boston Christmas Festival

If you choose to spend time in Boston during the winter months, you will be thrilled to know there is a festival taking place to keep you busy. This festival has been held at the Boston Seaport World Trade Center in the past. Approximately three hundred craft artists arrive to set up booths to sell their creations. While you will love shopping for unique holiday gifts at this festival, you may be more intrigued with the Gingerbread House Competition.

Boston is quite a busy city. That is the number one reason why so many people only spend a couple of days there exploring. The rest of their vacation time is spent exploring the little towns and villages nearby. If you are planning a road trip through New England and want to spend a couple of days in Boston, I recommend you add the area of Marblehead to your list of destinations as well.

As you are driving from Boston to Marblehead, you will have the opportunity to stop at some of the best beaches in the state of Massachusetts. Don’t pass them all by. You can easily stop for a little bit to sink your toes in the sand and soak in all the sights.

Forty Steps Beach

Forty Steps Beach used to be located a mere forty steps away from Nahant Road in the little town of Hanant. However, there has been plenty of erosion over the years. You must walk a little more to reach this stretch of sand. Most people love this beach because of all the sea glass they can find as they are walking around. There are also many colorful pebbles all over this sand. You must move them if you want to be successful at grabbing the beautiful sea glass that arrives from the water.

Short Beach

Short Beach is a residential beach in Nahant, MA. You must have a residential parking pass to park near the sand. It is best to visit this beach during low tide because some areas are rockier than others. The waves are calm some days and quite high other days. So, you will want to use caution before going out for a swim. When the waves are calm though, it is easy for kids to walk out into the water for a few feet before it gets too deep.

Doggie Beach

There are not many dog-friendly beaches in the US. But Doggie Beach in Nahant is one of the beaches that allow furry friends from October 1^st through April 30th. This beach is right next to Nahant Beach. It is cordoned off for the safety of everyone. You must keep your dog on a leash during your visit. However, you will not be restricted to any specific area of this beach during your visit. Since the water is calm at this beach, both you and your dog can easily go for a swim in between long walks along the sandy shoreline.

Each one of these spectacular beaches offers extraordinary views of Boston’s shoreline without the hustle and bustle of being in the big city.
