Southern charm is everywhere in the city of Savannah. Add in a horse and carriage ride, unique architecture, and lots of history, and you have the perfect family vacation destination! You can easily rent an Airbnb near Tybee Beach while in Savannah. You could stay in any of the hotels that are located in and near the city. The best place to stay during a vacation in Savannah, though is one of the historic inns. The best historic inns of Savannah are located within the city’s neighborhoods. This makes them perfect for when you want to spend your days and nights exploring the city or heading out on ghost tours. Today, I am going to share my favorite historic inns of Savannah.

Check Out the Historic Inns of Savannah

The Marshall House

The Marshall House is a beautiful historic inn right in the heart of downtown Savannah. Its centralized location makes it the best choice when you know you will be doing a lot of walking around the city. Plus, it is right down the street from Leopold’s Ice Cream.

This historic inn was constructed in 1851. The Marshall House was used as a Union hospital during the Civil War. The rooms still have their original doors, floors, and many other architectural quirks. The clawfoot tub turned into a shower adds charm to the bathroom.

You can learn more about the history of this inn by walking through the hallways. That is where historic photographs and other documents are on display. Oh, and before I forget to mention this, The Marshall House is haunted. So, it matches perfectly with Savannah’s ghostly atmosphere.

Kehoe House

Kehoe House is a beautiful inn located near Columbia Square and the Davenport House Museum. This inn was constructed in 1892. There are only thirteen guest rooms at this inn. So, you will definitely feel pampered during your stay. You can easily spend at least part of your day out on your balcony or on the covered side veranda. There is a private garden courtyard that is wonderful for relaxing too.

Check Out the Historic Inns of Savannah - Kehoe House

East Bay Inn

Many of the historic inns of Savannah were built in the mid to late 1800s. This includes the East Bay Inn, which was constructed in 1852. You will find this inn directly across from River Street. This makes it the best option for your family vacation if you know you will be spending a lot of time down by the river.

Eliza Thompson House

The Eliza Thompson House is an adults-only historic inn in Savannah. Therefore, you will only be able to stay here when you are on a family vacation with your adult children. This is the oldest of all the historic inns.

The Eliza Thompson House was the very first home built on Jones Street, which is only minutes from Forsyth Park. Eliza and Joseph Thompson raised their seven children in the home before it was turned into an inn.

The River Street Inn

The beautiful River Street Inn was once an old cotton warehouse. This historic inn overlooks the Savannah River. All the guest rooms offer original pine wood floors, authentic fireplaces, and exposed brick walls. Some rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows, which are perfect for capturing the views of the river and surrounding area.

When you walk into the atrium, you will instantly see the grand staircase. Stand there for a moment and wonder what this space would have been like more than two hundred years ago when the building was used as a cotton warehouse.

The Gastonian

This historic inn of Savannah is actually two restored residential homes located on Gaston Street. The inn is located near Forsyth Park. There are only seventeen guest rooms here. They all have stunning chandeliers, working fireplaces, and private balconies.

You can easily walk to any of the squares in the city, as well as River Street and all the restaurants and coffee shops from The Gastonian.

Olde Harbour Inn

The Olde Harbour Inn is in a wonderful location, close to the Savannah City Market and the Moon River Brewing Company. This inn is slightly more rustic than many of the others. That doesn’t mean you won’t fall in love with the tall ceilings and architectural details, though.

The guest rooms at this inn are quite spacious and are considered more apartments than standard rooms. This extra space will allow your family to spread out more during your stay.

Hamilton-Turner Inn

The Hamilton-Turner Inn is near Lafayette Square in downtown Savannah. This building was constructed as a home for Samuel Pugh Hamilton in 1873. It wasn’t turned into an inn until 1997.

This luxurious inn will have you thinking you should have visited this city much sooner. After all, you won’t be able to resist the four-poster beds and high-end finishes. Oh, and don’t forget the southern charm!

These are my favorite historic inns of Savannah, but there are others you can choose to stay at during your family vacation. Simply tell me which historic inn will fulfill your families needs the most, and I will book your stay while planning the rest of your vacation in Savannah. Yes, it is as easy as that to mix luxurious accommodations with time at the beach and a few ghosts along the way.

A carriage tour of Charleston is one of the best ways to learn about the history of the city. As you relax in the back of the carriage and listen to the footsteps of the horses, you will be transported back in time. While you listen to the stories, you will get to see buildings up close. They won’t be whizzing by like they would in a vehicle, either. You can really appreciate all the intricate details of each building as you take your Charleston carriage tour.

Since there are a few different companies offering these tours, you must be aware of what to expect. I am going to share what you need to know. This will ensure you have a phenomenal time while on your Charleston carriage tour.  You can add this information to what you else you learn about planning a family vacation in Charleston, SC

What You Must Know for Your Carriage Tour of Charleston

Four Different Routes

Historic Downtown Charleston - Carriage Tour

There are four different routes available for carriage tours of Charleston. Each one is amazing, but you don’t get to choose the one you want. Instead, the driver stops at a kiosk that will tell them which route they must take. Therefore, you must be prepared to see the same route, even if you take four different tours.

Every Guide is Different

Each guide that leads the carriage tours of Charleston is amazing. However, they each have their own style. Some even know a little more about certain facts than others. This means you could take the same route two or more times and still learn something new.

Plan Your Carriage Tour of Charleston Carefully

It can get extremely hot later in the day during the spring, summer, and fall of Charleston. I usually recommend taking a carriage tour earlier in the day to ensure you can take one. The reason for this is once the temperature hits 98 degrees, the tours are stopped until it cools down.

When to Purchase Your Tickets

It is not a necessity to purchase your tickets in advance for a carriage tour of Charleston. I do recommend it, though, if you are visiting during a popular time of the year. It is also an excellent idea on weekends and for those romantic evening tours.

Don’t Expect Horses to Pull You Every Time

While horses pull most of the carriages in Charleston, there are a few that are pulled by mules. Do not think that your carriage tour will be any less authentic if it is pulled by mules. You will still have the same experiences, just a different animal up in front.

These are the five things you must know for your carriage tour of Charleston. Not any of them would be earth-shattering if you were not aware of them. But they will allow you to understand exactly what will happen when you climb into the back of the carriage for your Charleston carriage tour.

So, are you ready to plan a family vacation and take a Charleston carriage tour?

If you said yes, I would like to invite you to schedule a planning session with me by clicking here. When you click on this link, you will be taken directly to my digital calendar to schedule a time that is convenient for you.

Everything You Must Know About Drayton Hall in Charleston, SC

Inside Drayton Hall

John Drayton purchased the land that he would use to construct Drayton Hall back in 1738. The design of this home includes some of the best Palladian architecture in the entire country. Drayton Hall is unique because it has never been restored. Therefore, a visit here shows you the exact materials and spaces that were created when the house was built.

While this home has never been restored, careful steps have been taken to preserve the history of the seven generations who have lived there. Drayton Hall has been carefully stabilized and looks exactly as it did when the family stopped living there back in the 1970s.

The Outside of Drayton Hall

Outside Drayton Hall is the Lenhardt Garden, as well as the Sally Rearhard Visitors Center. The garden began with only existing trees and native plants. However, Drayton’s son, Charles, added many exotic plants when he took over the home.

The grounds of Drayton Hall are where you will also find the Caretaker’s House, the George McDaniel Education Center, and the Stephen and Laura Gates Exhibit Gallery. It is inside the exhibit gallery where you will find lots of history. There are many works of art, manuscripts, furniture, and archaeological items. There is also an archive that contains information on repairs to the main house after the Revolutionary War. You will also discover almost everything else about the home’s two hundred-plus years of history.

Charleston, SC - Tree-Lined Plantation Entrance

When you are finished touring Drayton Hall and the grounds, you can take a self-guided nature walk around the property. Afterward, you must stop at the museum shop to grab a souvenir of your time at this beautiful attraction. Your purchase will ensure that the work to preserve Drayton Hall continues long into the future.

Do you love seeing old houses and plantations? They can be part of your vacation in Charleston, SC!  Whether you have four days, a week, or two weeks to spend in this southern state, there is plenty to do to keep your family busy and make those vacation memories you have been dreaming about.

Whether you appreciate old-world charm or you simply love meeting new friends, planning vacation in Charleston, SC will check off all the boxes. This historical city offers long walks on cobblestone streets, opportunities to spend time with the locals, and delectable cuisine you won’t be able to stop eating. I will share it all within this travel guide that focuses exclusively on Charleston, SC. I guarantee your entire family will love the atmosphere of this gorgeous destination and before you know it, you will be planning a return trip in the very near future.

History in Charleston, SC

Charleston might not be the largest city in South Carolina, but it is the oldest. This city was founded back in 1670. Its original name was Charles Town. Surprisingly, back then, the city of Charleston was not located where it is today. At that time, you would have found this city on the west banks of the Ashley River. The city moved to its current location in 1680. A few decades later, in 1783, the name changed to what we call this area today.

As you walk through the streets of Charleston, you will quickly realize that everything seems to have a story. History abounds and the locals love to share the information that has been passed down through the generations.

See a unique iron gate? Don’t be surprised if there is a local close by to tell you the history behind it.

Riding the ferry to Fort Sumter? Your history lesson will begin long before you reach the fort.

You may even hear the tales of the few ghosts that are said to wander around this part of South Carolina. There are quite a few ghost stories that the locals love. A couple of personal favorites include the Ghosts of Battery Carriage House, the Ghosts of Dock Street Theatre, and the Moaning Dungeon Pirates.

If you want to hear those stories, and others, make sure I am aware, so I can book one of the best ghost tours during your vacation in Charleston, SC.

Weather in Charleston, SC

There may be four seasons in Charleston, but one of the seasons is quite short. This subtropical destination has very short winters with very little snow. The sun shines more than two hundred days a year. I have discovered you can never vacation in Charleston at a bad time of the year.

Spring in Charleston

The temperature in Charleston during the spring is anywhere between 70- and 80-degrees Fahrenheit. The days are long, the sun shines brightly, yet the water is still too cold for swimming. The nights cool down quickly at this time of the year, so you must be prepared by dressing appropriately.

Summer in Charleston

The humidity climbs rather quickly during the summer months in Charleston. It is common to see temperatures topping 90 degrees or even higher. Rainstorms can be common during the summer, but most of them do not last long.

Fall in Charleston

The temperatures start to go down slowly during the fall in Charleston. It can still be humid during the month of September, but the humidity is mostly gone by the middle of October and later. Those are also the months where it will be much cooler in this area on the East Coast.

Winter in Charleston

It rarely gets below freezing in Charleston. And as I mentioned above, it hardly ever snows. It can easily reach the 60s during the day, so you may not need to bundle up as much as you think during your visit. The nights will be colder though, so make sure you are prepared if you are out later in the day.

What to Pack for a Vacation in Charleston, SC

It can be a little difficult to pack for a vacation in Charleston, SC, especially if you are going at any time other than summer. The summer months are easy, because you can get away with shorts, short sleeve shirts, sundresses, and sandals. The same is true for late spring and early fall.

An umbrella and even a raincoat are necessary throughout the year. However, you will use them the most during the month of August.

For the rest of the year, you can pack those items, as well as pants, sweaters, long-sleeved shirts, and even a jacket. Layers are always your best option, especially during the winter months.

Oh, and since you will be doing some walking when taking a family vacation in Charleston, a pair of sneakers or good walking shoes are a must.

Activities to Embrace While on Vacation in Charleston

Family vacations in Charleston are going to be filled with more activities than you can count. Thankfully, you can choose how busy you want to be each day. This will allow you to have plenty of time for relaxation in between checking everything off your itinerary.

There are ninety miles of shoreline in Charleston, so days at the beach are a must for family vacations. There are also more than one hundred public parks. Those are perfect for picnics and long afternoons of lounging. You can even buy the foods you will eat from the local farmer’s market.

The fire museum is always a hit with kids. Especially those who think they want to be a firefighter. And if you have someone in your family more interested in boats than fire trucks, the maritime museum is ready and waiting. The train museum is an option for those who want to see trains instead.

It is simple to discover the history of this city. You won’t walk or drive too far before seeing a historical sign or landmark. You won’t want to forget about wandering around many of the plantations and gardens either.

Other amazing activities you must do as a family in Charleston include:

  • Walking Along the Wharf at Waterfront Park
  • Exploring the Citadel Military College
  • Taking a Selfie with the Angel Oak
  • Playing Mini Golf
  • Walking Through Dungeons and Hearing Pirate Stories
  • Taking Pirate Tours
  • Swimming
  • Watching a Sporting Event
  • Shopping at Charleston City Market

Top Places to See in Charleston

With so many historical sites and things to see in Charleston, it will be difficult to get them all on your itinerary. If you want to see quite a few in a short amount of time, I can book one of the many sightseeing tours for you. That will free up a lot of time for the attractions you want to spend more time at when you are on a family vacation in Charleston, SC.

The one attraction in Charleston that is on everyone’s list is Fort Sumter. This fort is where the Civil War began back in 1861. I recommend taking a ferry over to the fort, so you can check out the stone caverns and cannons. The museum is an excellent place to grab a souvenir to commemorate your time on this island.

If you happen to be in the southern area of the city, a walk around The Battery is a must. This neighborhood is filled with mansions that look out over the Charleston Harbor. It is best to start at Waterfront Park where the giant pineapple fountain is located. You will know you have seen everything when you reach White Point Garden.

King Street is another area families love to walk around when in the downtown area of Charleston. The street is where history and entertainment combine for some authentic family fun! Past visitors have recommended stopping into John Pope Antiques, even if you aren’t planning on purchasing anything. You never know what you, or your kids, will discover once you walk through the doors.

A few more incredible places to see in Charleston include:

  • Magnolia Plantation & Gardens
  • Sullivan’s Island Lighthouse
  • Magnolia Cemetery
  • John’s Island
  • The Aiken-Rhett House Museum
  • HL Hunley Submarine
  • Charleston Museum
  • Charleston Tea Garden

If you are not scared of ghosts and other spooky spirits, I can plan a stop at Poogan’s Porch. This restaurant is located within a Victorian townhouse. The cuisine is beyond amazing, but you must be aware of the haunted residents prior to entering the front door.

Many people lived within this home prior to it being turned into a restaurant. However, the most famous of all those residents was Zoe St. Amand. She lived in this house during the early 1900s, while she worked as a schoolteacher. When her sister passed in 1945, Zoe sank into a depressed state and was eventually admitted to the local hospital where she died. Don’t be surprised if you catch a glimpse of Zoe and her sister when you are enjoying your meal. You may even spot her in the ladies’ room.

There are dozens of other haunted stories like this in Charleston and I can make sure you hear quite a few of them if you are interested.

Amazing Festivals You Can’t-Miss in Charleston

Charleston Wine & Food Festival

When you go to a wine and food festival, you want to experience it all! That is completely possible when you score tickets to the Charleston Wine & Food Festival. You must get your tickets early to this event or you will miss out on all the fun and need to wait until the following year.

This festival is held at the beginning of March every year, so I recommend beginning the planning process now! There are more than one hundred different culinary experiences over the course of five days. You can eat all types of cuisine, drink wine, and be entertained while attending cooking classes. Imagine your kids learning how to cook while on this family vacation! It’s the stuff dreams are made of!

Spoleto Festival USA

The end of May and the beginning of June brings the Spoleto Festival USA every year in Charleston. The Piccolo Spoleto Festival takes place at the same time. The first festival began in 1977. There are seventeen days filled with different performing arts. You can watch performances of the opera, dance, and theater.

The Piccolo Spoleto Festival is a little different with piccolo performances, sand sculpting competitions, and the sunset serenade. There are even a patriotic parade and a midnight pajama march. You never know what you will experience at these two festivals with your family!

Second Sunday on King Street

There is no doubt that King Street can be very busy. Thankfully, there is less busyness from vehicular traffic on the second Sunday of every month. That is when the road is closed to vehicles and people get it all to themselves.

King Street is considered one of the top ten shopping streets in the entire country. Your whole family will love shopping, checking out the street entertainers, and even dining at one of the many restaurants. This street is only a half-mile long, but it packs a punch with its authenticity.

And yes, you can explore this street at any time, but why not join in on the extra fun on this special day every month!

Have you been yearning to head out on a family adventure? There are so many incredible places to take your family, whether you are just taking your kids and spouse or your parents as well. Maybe you even want to get away with your siblings and nieces and nephews! Planning a vacation to Savannah, GA just the ticket. Savannah is one of those stunning destinations that are perfect for family vacations. I know if you took the time to vacation in Savannah, GA, you would be hooked on these family vacations for life. And that is where this travel guide comes in. I wanted you to know a little about what you could expect if you did choose Savannah for your next fun family vacation.

Savannah is a bustling city that is known for its walkability, as well as being dog-friendly. As you walk past the mansions and public squares, you will find yourself engrossed in the history of this destination. At the same time, you will know that Tybee Island and the beach are right down the road for those days when you simply want to relax in the sun and the sand.

Days in Savannah can be spent in so many ways. But you must have a plan if you don’t want to miss everything this city is known for.

History in Savannah

Back in 1733, General James Oglethorpe found his ship on the bluffs of the Savannah River. At that time, this area was unnamed, but it quickly became the colony of Georgia and Savannah was the very first city. As the streets in Savannah were created, twenty-four town squares were inserted amongst them. Currently, there are only twenty-two of those public squares left for you to walk through or sit down for a minute to reflect and relax.

As you are in these public squares, you will notice that they are the burial sites for a few people. Or at least that is what you will think. Many of those marked graves may have other people buried in them, while the person named on the marker is buried elsewhere. It is one of Savannah’s mysteries that will pique your interest.

Over the years, Savannah has seen much success. It has also seen the devastation of two fires that destroyed a good portion of the city. Thankfully, Savannah came back stronger each time. The Historic Savannah Foundation even ensured that the Historic District was spared from demolition and designated as a National Historic Landmark instead.

Many other historical events have taken place in Savannah over the years. There were wars, an infestation in the cotton that ruined the crops, and events that are now part of Savannah’s hauntings. One historical event I feel I much touch on is Savannah’s Waving Girl.

Florence Margaret Martus greeted ships by waving either a handkerchief or lantern from the Elba Island Lighthouse. She did this for forty-four years until she retired in 1931. There were many stories as to why the Waving Girl waved to approximately fifty thousand boats during those years. Some people believe she was looking for a long-lost love. While the true story may never be known, she was at least a beacon of hope to those returning home from sea.

During your family vacation in Savannah, GA, you can visit the Waving Girl statue down on River Street.

Weather in Savannah, GA

Since Savannah is down in the southeast, it has a subtropical climate. There are more than two hundred sunny days every year. While it rains, it hardly ever snows. When you add all those things up, you get the perfect vacation destination, no matter when you decide to travel.

Spring in Savannah

The temperatures can reach the 70s and 80s in Savannah during the spring months. There is less humidity during the spring too, which makes it more comfortable to be outside walking around. Despite the warmer temperatures, the water temperature is still quite cold until the end of May.

Summer in Savannah

It is common for temperatures to reach the 90s or higher during the summer months in Savannah. The humidity also climbs, which is why so many people head over the beaches most days. Rain is common during the summer, especially during the month of August. Don’t expect the rain to cool things down though. All it does is make things wet and causes the humidity to rise even more!

Fall in Savannah

The temperatures drop slightly with fall’s arrival in Savannah. Early fall can still see days that reach the mid-80s, while late fall brings temperatures in the 70s.

Winter in Savannah

High temperatures of 60 degrees are what you should expect if you decide to vacation in Savannah during the winter. And since it hardly ever snows, you don’t need to worry about being stuck inside during your visit.

What to Pack for a Vacation in Savannah, GA

During the warmer months of the year, you can get away with shorts and short-sleeved shirts, as well as sundresses and sandals. However, during the spring and fall, you will want to have warmer clothes available, especially at night.

The air conditioning can make buildings quite cold during the summer months. Therefore, a light jacket can be helpful if you get cold easily. Umbrellas or raincoats are a must during the summer and can even be helpful during the spring.

The winter months are cold to the locals, but you may think it is warm depending on what the weather is like where you live. That means that packing for a winter vacation in Savannah can be a little tricky. I recommend taking mostly pants and long-sleeved shirts and sweaters. You can throw a couple of pairs of shorts and short-sleeved shirts into your suitcase, along with a sundress or two, just in case. However, you may never actually wear them. It does get quite cool at night during the winter, so a jacket is another item you will want to have with you.

Activities to Embrace While on Vacation in Savannah

Family vacations in Savannah are always filled with fun activities everyone will love. Your days can be spent wandering through museum exhibits and art galleries. Or you can head over to Tybee Island to swim, take a ride in a boat, or simply relax in the sand. If you are ready for even more beach adventures, you can take a quick drive up to Hilton Head Island.

While you are at the beach, you will want to make sure you are signed up for one of the dolphin tours. If that is not enough time on the water for you, everyone can grab a kayak or paddleboard and head out for additional fun. Taking a river cruise on the Savannah River is a thrilling option when it comes to being on the water and seeing panoramic views of Savannah’s attractions. You can even choose to take a sunset cruise with your family to see how the ambiance changes in this city at night.

You cannot spend time in Savannah and not go on one of the many ghost tours. There are almost too many to count! I love finding the perfect ghost tours for families and I guarantee you will only be as spooked as you want to be.

Summer vacations in Savannah are going to be hot. If you plan on staying in the city for the day, you must check out Ellis Square Fountains. You can walk through the streaming water to cool down or at least enjoy the mist from the fountains. At night, the fountain lights up in all colors. It is truly a sight to see.

Other family fun activities during a vacation in Savannah include:

  • Segway Tours
  • Golfing on World-Class Courses
  • Trolley Tours
  • Eating Candy and Ice Cream on River Street
  • Shopping at City Market
  • Cooking Classes
  • Picnics in the Park
  • Watching Performances at Savannah Theatre or Lucas Theatre
  • Hiking the Nature Trails

Top Places to See in Savannah

There are so many hot spots to add to your itinerary for a family vacation in Savannah. The good news is that you can take a tour of Savannah to see quite a few of the attractions in a short amount of time. This will give you more time to explore the attractions you want to see more of.

The Mercer Williams House is a must-see for everyone visiting Savannah. You cannot see the entire home, but you can explore the first floor and shop at the gift shop. During your tour, you won’t hear anything about the alleged murder that took place in this home or the book that was based on this house. You will learn about the architecture of the home, as well as the original owner, Johnny Mercer.

Fort Pulaski can be found out on Cockspur Island, which is between the city and Tybee Island. This national monument should not be missed during a vacation in Savannah. You can explore on your own or take one of the guided tours. I always recommend visiting on the weekends, because that is when historic weapons demonstrations are held. After checking out the museum, you can hike on one of the trails. The North Pier trail is only a quarter of a mile long, while the Overlook Trail is three-quarters of a mile. The longest trail is six miles and that is the McQueens Island Rails to Trails.

One of the most historic places to visit in Savannah is The Pirates’ House. This is actually a restaurant that serves family-friendly meals with a side of history. The Pirates’ House was established back in 1753 and was the actual location that inspired events that occurred in Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson.

A few more top places to see in Savannah include:

  • Cathedral of St. John the Baptist
  • Bonaventure Cemetery
  • Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace
  • Forsyth Park
  • The Olde Pink House

Amazing Festivals You Can’t-Miss in Savannah

So many festivals and events take place in Savannah throughout the year. I could honestly write pages about them all. I won’t bore you with them all here, but understand I will find the ones your family will be most interested in during your vacation in Savannah.

Here are the amazing festivals you can’t miss in Savannah:

St. Patrick’s Day Parade

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Savannah is the second largest one in the US. Marching groups and bands come from all over the country to be in this parade every year. While this city has been observing this holiday since 1813, the celebrations have changed immensely over the years. The parade is now between three and four hours long. And if you decide to go, you will be amongst upwards of four hundred thousand people watching along the streets.

When the parade is over, there are many other activities you can participate in for a few days. Over in Forsyth Park, the water in the fountain is turned green. Along River Street, you will have the chance to eat, drink, and listen to live music all day and long into the night. The City Market turns into a party hub too, so make sure that is one of the destinations on your list at this time of the year.

Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) Sidewalk Arts Festival

Towards the end of April into the beginning of May, there is a lot of extra color within Forsyth Park. It is at that time of the year when the Savannah College of Art & Design Sidewalk Arts Festival takes place. Students in the area are given chalk to create stunning masterpieces that will then be judged. All the artwork stays in place for a week or so, unless of course, it rains.

This event also hosts “living pictures”, which is when actors and models depict scenes that you would normally see in photographs. Attending this event will definitely spark your creative side and get your entire family talking!

Savannah Tour of Homes & Gardens

As you walk through the streets of Savannah, you are going to see quite a few gorgeous homes. While you can’t go up and knock on the door to go inside, there are a few homes you can check out if you attend the Savannah Tour of Homes & Gardens. Only ticket holders to this event can go into some of the best homes in the city to see the architecture and even the furnishings. When you are not exploring homes, you will find yourself wandering through lush, colorful gardens.

There have been many firsts in the USA. First, the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock in 1620. Then land was purchased past the Mississippi in 1783. The Gold Rush was in 1848. And the completion of the fifty states in 1959. In between all those dates, there were many other firsts. This included the opening of the Charleston Museum in 1773.

Let’s Explore America’s First Museum in Charleston, SC

The Charleston Museum was America’s first museum. It is an excellent place to see the true history of the state of South Carolina and the rest of the country. This entire museum is filled with collections of natural history, culture, and ethnological and zoological specimens.

The Permanent Exhibits at the Charleston Museum

There are nine permanent exhibits at the Charleston Museum. The Becoming Americans exhibit shares the important role of this city during the American Revolution. There are artifacts from both American and British soldiers. You will also see personal items of Francis Marion and George Washington’s inaugural button.

The Bunting Natural History Gallery shares the fossils, specimens, and skeletons of all the animals that have lived in this region over the years. The jaws of the Megalodon, which is a shark, is a highlight of this exhibit.

Over at the Lowcountry History Hall, you will see all types of items that were used by the Native Americans who lived in this area. This is where some of the earliest artifacts from the city are on display.

City Under Siege is the exhibit that shows the role Charleston played in the Civil War. The personal effects of civilians and soldiers are on display. Your family may be interested in seeing the different types of weapons that were used.

Other permanent exhibits include the Armory, Early Days, Kidstory, Historic Textiles, and Charleston Silver.

The Historic Houses of the Charleston Museum

There are two historic houses of the Charleston Museum. They are the Joseph Manigault House and Charleston’s Huguenot House.

The Joseph Manigault House was constructed back in 1803. It is quite an elegant antebellum home that shows the lifestyle of those who led a wealthy life. The family that lived there planted rice. A tour of the inside shares what their days would have looked like. You will also learn about the African Americans who lived and worked on this plantation.

Charleston’s Huguenot House was constructed during the 18th century. This was after the Manigaults fled Europe to become rice planters in America. The inside of this home has been completely restored. It is filled with English, French, and American early 19th-century furniture. The Gale Temple overlooks the garden. All the outbuildings are labeled with signs stating what they were used for.

You cannot visit Charleston and not visit America’s first museum. I understand that many museums are boring. But this museum will bring history to life! You can easily spend a couple of hours at the Charleston Museum without even realizing it!

I can help you plan your trip to America’s first museum, while also creating an itinerary of other fascinating places to see when you are in Charleston. Let’s create those magical memories with your family that you will cherish forever.

So, are you ready to have me create a personalized family vacation itinerary for your next trip to Charleston or another destination?

The Citadel Military College is commonly referred to as the Citadel. It was established back in 1842 and is only one of six senior military colleges in the US. There are normally 2,300 students on campus at once as undergraduates. The Citadel is best known nationally for its Corps of Cadets. The college draws students from about 45 states and a dozen countries. Another 1,000 students attend The Citadel Graduate College. This is a civilian evening and online program that offers graduate and professional degrees as well as undergraduate programs.

Experience the Citadel Military College

You can easily tour the Citadel on any day of the year. However, cadet-led tours are only available on the weekdays after two in the afternoon. The only exception is during holidays, breaks, and exams.

There are fifty-seven stops on the tour. So, you must plan to be at the Citadel for at least two or three hours if you want to see it all. Many people choose to spend a good portion of the day there, so they can walk around and enjoy a picnic lunch before their tour even begins.

You begin your tour at the Lesesne Gate. From there you will venture over to the Daniel Library and the Citadel Museum. There are many permanent and temporary exhibits within this building.

Next on the tour is the Ring Statue, Summerall Field, Summerall Chapel, the Citadel War Memorial, and General Mark W. Clark’s Grave. There are too many other tour stops to list them all here. A few of the most important ones include the Canteen, Seraph Monument, Bulldog Monument, Murray Barracks, Star of the West House, and Johnson Hagood Stadium.

Other Things to Do at Citadel Military College

You will want to circle back to stop at the Cadet Store if you do not have time to grab your souvenirs during your tour.

If possible, you should plan your Charleston road trip for when one of the parades is taking place at the Citadel. The parades are often on Fridays. It is when awards and recognitions are given to students, staff, and faculty. The parades are free. But you must arrive at least a half-hour before they start. This ensures you find a parking spot and can get to the parade area before it begins.

You don’t need to want to enter the military to visit this college. But it is a good place to see, especially if you want to know how the military works and where some great leaders earned their education.

I would love to add this to your Charleston itinerary if it is a destination that interests you and your family. Simply let me know your ideas of what would make an amazing family vacation and together we will create an itinerary that will get those memory-making days started!

So, are you ready to have me create a personalized family vacation itinerary for your next trip to Charleston or another destination?

Plantations used to be everywhere in the south and that included the Charleston area. What is now known as the Charleston Tea Garden used to be known as the Pinehurst Tea Plantation up in Summerville. The tea from that plantation grew from 1888 until 1915. Upon the death of the owner, Dr. Charles Shepard, the plants grew wild for years.

The plants were transplanted to an old potato farm in 1963. They were used as research for that farm for twenty-four years. Thankfully, that ended in 1987 when William Barclay Hall purchased the farm and turned it into a commercial operation. This is when the name was officially changed to the Charleston Tea Garden. It is now part of the Bigelow Tea Company family.

What to See at the Charleston Tea Garden

As soon as you arrive at this tea garden, you will see acres and acres of tea bushes. There is no admission fee to enter this tea garden. You can participate in a tour of the factory. Inside the tea production building, you will see all the different pieces of equipment that are used to create the tea they sell.

Best Way to Experience the Charleston Tea Garden

You can walk around the Charleston Tea Garden and see the factory. But there is a better way to experience this destination. The Trolley Tour offers a unique way to see most of the Charleston Tea Garden. You must pay a fee for that part of your visit.

This tour lasts between thirty-five and forty-five minutes. During the tour, you will see acres of tea bushes that are further out from the area you arrived at. Your tour guide will share lots of information about the tea garden, as well as the teas they grow.

One of the best things about the Trolley Tour is the stop you will make at the greenhouse. That greenhouse is where all those new tea bushes are started, and they stay there until they are big enough to plant in the ground.

You must stop in the gift shop before you leave the Charleston Tea Garden. There are hundreds of different items available that relate to tea, as well as the tea itself. If you do not know what type of tea you will love the most, you can always sample a few of them at the Tea Bar.

You will love experiencing the Charleston Tea Garden, especially if you haven’t been in a tea garden before. There is a wealth of information to learn during your visit, but I won’t blame you if you are more interested in the tea you can drink at the end.

Savannah’s River Walk is located alongside the Savannah River. The street that you will find yourself walking on is called River Street. But there is also a promenade area that is between the cobblestone street and the river.

Old cotton warehouses line River Street. They have now been turned into shops, pubs, restaurants, and art galleries. There are seventy-five different businesses in all to explore. It could honestly take you all day to see them all.

One of the favorite shops is the River Street Sweets Candy Store. Inside, you will find all types of southern candy, as well as any other candy you can imagine! You are definitely not going to walk out of this candy shop without a bag in your hand! I prefer the fudge, but with all the pralines, candy apples, bear claws, cakes, and pies, you may have a difficult time choosing just one item.

The old-fashioned open-air market is another favorite because you can grab some souvenirs without missing out on the views of the river.

Experience the Beauty of Savannah’s River Walk

If you really want to see the river or the River Walk from a different perspective, I recommend taking one of the Savannah Riverboat Cruises. There are multiple cruises every day and you can even do a dinner or late-night cruise. The riverboat will take you down to Old Fort Jackson and back again, while you listen to a narrated tour of all the sights you are seeing along the way.

As you are walking along Savannah’s River Walk, you will want to take the time to stop at the many different historical sites. Those sites include the World War II Monument, Waving Girl Statue, and the Olympic Cauldron.

Don’t worry if you get hungry along the way either, because there are plenty of places to grab a bite to eat and a drink! Huey’s is perfect if you are craving beignets, while Olympic Café and Vic’s on the River offer something a little more substantial. If you want a drink with a view, then I recommend Rocks on the Rooftop. This rooftop bar never disappoints!

There are always different events and festivals held down at Savannah’s River Walk throughout the year, so you may want to plan your visit accordingly. A few of the more popular events include the Savannah Food & Wine Festival, Savannah Craft Brew Festival, Savannah Bacon Festival, and Christmas on the River.

I love visiting Savannah and think it is a must-see destination when you are doing a southern road trip. If you are ready to get your southern charm on, I can add this city your itinerary and have you exploring Savannah’s River Walk in no time at all!

The Charleston City Market is one of the oldest public markets in the country. You will find this market with more than three hundred vendors within the heart of this fabulous city. There are actually two different types of markets. They are the day market and the night market. The day market is open every day of the year with the exception of Christmas. The night market is only open from the middle of March through December.

Charleston City Market Open Air Sheds

There are three different open-air sheds at this market. They have been around for more than two centuries now. Each one is filled with many small businesses selling their items to the public.

Charleston City Market Great Hall

The Great Hall is a newer addition to the market. It wasn’t opened until June of 2011. This enclosed space added an eighteen thousand foot plus corridor to the shopping space that was already available. There are many different stores in this space. It is one of the many areas where you can purchase the sweetgrass baskets this city is known for.

Charleston City Night Market

The night market is only open on Fridays and Saturdays during certain months of the year. But it is a popular place for shopping. This market is three blocks long and is lit up to make it even more festive than it is. Every vendor is from the area. They sell items that they, or other local artisans, make.

The live entertainment only adds to the ambiance, so make sure you take the time to stop and listen as you are doing your shopping. This is also the perfect place to grab a bite to eat if you skipped dinner or are planning on eating afterward and simply need a little snack.

When you are not exploring this wonderful market, you can always take one of the carriage tours or simply walk around the nearby neighborhoods.

Let me help you explore this market and the rest of Charleston during an amazing southern vacation! I can create an itinerary you will love and make this a family vacation you will remember forever!
