When do you consider the perfect time of the year for a family vacation? If you are like most people, your answer is going to be the summer. But why are you leaving out the beauty of fall and all the amazing things autumn brings to destinations all over the world? One of the best places to visit in the fall is Alaska. There is so many things to do in Alaska during the fall. Plus, the weather is still nice enough where you won’t freeze while you are on your family vacation! I could go on and on as to all the reasons to visit Alaska in the fall. However, today, I will stick to the five main reasons why fall is perfect for visiting Alaska.

Reasons to Visit Alaska in the Fall

1. Fewer People

Reasons to Visit Alaska in the Fall - Historic Buildings in Downtown Anchorage

As I mentioned above, lots of people travel during the summer. This means that fall in Alaska offers fewer crowds. While you are wandering around, you will have a better chance of talking to the locals. You will also have time to truly appreciate the destinations and attractions you are visiting.

Don’t forget to check out the Alaska Museum of Science and Nature, as well as the Alaska Native Heritage Center during your visit!

Did you know that fewer crowds is one of the best reasons to visit Alaska in the fall?

2. Appreciate the Changes of Color

You don’t need to travel too far to see the color changes during the fall. But in Alaska, the fall brings intense colors that cannot be seen anywhere else in the world! Everything seems to change color. Plus, you will notice those brilliant colors the moment you arrive.

Check out what you should know before taking a road trip in Alaska.

3. Catch Wildlife Sightings Before Hibernation Begins – Best Reason to Visit Alaska in the Fall

Reasons to Visit Alaska in the Fall - Wild Moose in Denali National Park

Yes, the wildlife in Alaska is used to the colder temperatures. But that doesn’t mean that some of the animals wander around all winter long. Many of the animals will hibernate for at least short periods of time. Therefore, you might not see every animal if you wait until winter to vacation in Alaska.

4. Fewer Mosquitos – My Favorite Reason to Visit Alaska in the Fall

Okay, unless you are a fan of mosquitos, you are going to love having fewer of them around when you vacation in Alaska in the fall. I am not a fan of these tiny little bugs. And Alaska has thirty-five different mosquito species! Yikes!

Thankfully, they almost disappear during the autumn in Alaska.

5. The State Fair

As long as you plan your vacation in Alaska for the beginning of September, you have an excellent chance of attending the Alaska State Fair.

This state fair in Alaska is held in Palmer. It is an excellent way to spend time with the locals.

You must consult the food map, so you don’t miss out on the tasty reindeer dogs and other local cuisine. Your time at the fair will also include seeing the largest pumpkins and cabbages in the world. Add in the comedy and musical acts and you will remember your time in Alaska forever!

These are five incredible reasons to visit Alaska in the fall. I can share even more reasons with you when we chat about me planning your next Alaskan family vacation.

The town of North Pole in Alaska is only twenty minutes from the city of Fairbanks. It is an easy place to visit when you are in the area. In this town, you will see the streets decorated for Christmas all year long. In the middle of it, all is the Santa Claus House. This magical store was a basic trading post when it was opened back in 1952. But since that time, it has turned into a store where the magic happens every day of the year.

When to Visit the Santa Claus House

You can visit the Santa Claus House at any time of the year. While their hours are shortened during the summer months, that doesn’t mean the fun stops when the sun is shining. In fact, you can still see Santa on certain days of the week. This shouldn’t be surprising though, since it is his slower time of the year!

Things to Do at the Santa Claus House

There are so many things to do when you visit the Santa Claus House. I recommend beginning with a selfie next to the massive Santa statue while sitting in the sleigh. There are even murals on the outside of the building, and they are all perfect for those family vacation pictures. From there you can get an official letter from Santa and have it postmarked from the North Pole. I even recommend mailing postcards and other memorabilia from this post office, because they will all arrive to friends and family with the official North Pole postmark!

After a stop to see the reindeer, you can do some shopping inside the nine thousand square feet of retail space. Inside the store, you will find an abundance of holiday-themed items, Alaska-themed ornaments, and many items that are made right in Alaska by the locals. Don’t forget to grab some fudge, candy, and Christmas cookies from The Sweet Shop before you leave!

During the winter months, there is a Christmas in Ice exhibit. This ice sculpture contest is attended by ice artists from all over the world. Approximately six hundred tons of ice are carved and chiseled into works of art. You will also find an ice maze to wander through and an ice slide to go down.

You can’t go wrong with a visit to the Santa Claus House when you are vacationing in Alaska. Let’s turn your whole family into kids again for one day, as you visit with Santa and embrace the miracles of the holiday season!

So, are you ready to have me create a personalized family vacation itinerary that includes a visit to the Santa Claus House?

If you said yes, I would like to invite you to click here to schedule a personalized family vacation planning session. When you click on this link, you will be taken directly to my digital calendar to schedule a time that is convenient for you.

Have you always wanted to see a glacier? Well, there is no better place to see one than Alaska. During a family vacation in Alaska, I recommend seeing the Worthington Glacier.

Explore the Worthington Glacier and Recreation Site

Location

One of the best places to see glaciers in Alaska is at the Worthington Glacier and Recreation Site. This area is located to the north of Valdez, right off the Richardson Highway. Most people will stop here as they are traveling along the highway to their next destination. However, you can also add it in as an extra stop even if you are not traveling through the area.

Size

There are one hundred thirteen acres of land in this area. That land is filled with numerous trails for you to wander along. When you arrive in the parking area, you will discover it is less than a half mile from where you can see the Worthington Glacier. You can even take a picnic lunch with you because there are picnic tables at the overlook.

Must-Do

When you arrive at the overlook area, you must take the time to see the many waterfalls that have been formed by the melting glacier. Due to the continuous melting of the Worthington Glacier, no one is sure how much longer this incredible piece of ice will be around. Therefore, you may want to visit Alaska sooner than later if you want to see it!

Bridal Falls in Alaska's Worthington Glacier and Recreation site

Down the road from the overlook, you will find Horsetail Falls and Bridal Veil Falls. These two waterfalls are within Keystone Canyon and they are quite a sight to see. While you can see these waterfalls from any of the pull-off areas of the highway, I recommend viewing them from a different perspective.

The Goat Trail is three miles round trip and it offers amazing views of both waterfalls. This hike is perfect for those days when you do not have much else going on, but since it can be completed quickly, you will still have time to do something else before you head back to your hotel.

Are you ready to see one of the best glaciers in Alaska? Let me plan your Alaska family vacation, so you can see the Worthington Glacier before it disappears forever!

So, are you ready to have me create a personalized family vacation itinerary in Alaska, so you can see the Worthington Glacier?

The Chena Hot Springs are similar to almost all the other hot springs in the world. They just happen to be located in Alaska. While some hot springs are in the middle of nowhere, these springs are now part of the Chena Hot Springs Resort. Enjoying the hot springs with the whole family will be a welcome break after your days’ activities. Family vacations in Alaska are filled with adventures. But taking time off to enjoy the warmth of the hot springs is a family must do.

A Bit of History

These hot springs were discovered back in 1905. But there are signs that suggest the indigenous people used the springs well before that time. The water in the Chena Hot Springs contains many different types of minerals. A few of those minerals are chloride, calcium, magnesium, fluoride potassium, sodium, boron, and lithium. Those minerals work together to soothe aches and pains, while also healing many different ailments.

This mineral-rich water comes from deep underground and flows through cracks and fractures to fill the hot spring area. Since the water picks up the heat from the Earth, it is quite warm by the time it reaches the surface.

While minerals are present in the water, there is also Sulphur. That is what gives the water the funny smell you probably are not used to.

What To Do

During a vacation in Alaska, you can easily visit the Chena Hot Springs. But there are so many other things to do at the Chena Hot Springs Resort when you are there. One of the favorite activities is visiting the kennel where the sled dogs live. Plus, going for a dog sled ride. However, the Ice Museum is also fascinating and should be close to the top of your list.

There are many different tours you can take of the area surrounding the Chena Hot Springs, whether by foot, ATV, or up in an airplane. While you can visit this part of Alaska at any time of the year for your road trip, the best time is when the Northern Lights are lighting up the dark winter sky.

Denali National Park is home to Denali, which has also been called Mount McKinley in the past. This massive area is home to more than the mountain though. A visit here will have you seeing a plethora of wildlife and extraordinary sights while tackling unique adventures. Read on to discover the must see’s and do’s of Denali National Park

6 Things You Must See and Do at Denali National Park

Moose in Denali National Park

Appreciate the Views from the Stony Hill Overlook

The Stony Hill Overlook is located at mile sixty-two of the Tundra Wilderness Tour and it is a must-see in my opinion. This overlook is at the edge of the mountain pass and it offers incredible views of Denali. You can even see Denali in its entirety, from base to summit, which is why this is such a popular destination for picture taking.

Watch a Sled Dog Demonstration

There are many different kennels inside Denali National Park, and it is easy to reach many of them to see the sled dog demonstrations. The summer months are when there are a multitude of puppies, so if you want to see the cuteness and watch them learning in the beginning, this is the time to go.

Go White Water Rafting on the Nenana River

This river offers some amazing rapids, but you can choose a calmer route if you do not want too much excitement during your adventure. These trips will have you out on the water for two hours, so you will have plenty of time to embrace your surroundings.

Check Out the Local Wildlife

There are so many animals living in Denali National Park, but there are five that you must see when you are there. Those five animals are wolves, grizzly bears, moose, Dall sheep, and caribou. While you should see these as you are exploring, don’t forget to keep an eye out for the collared pika, red fox, golden eagles, and other animals that call this park home.

Grab Some Photos at the Reflection Pond

The best time to visit Reflection Pond is early in the morning, due to the sun rising in the sky. This is when the reflection of Denali will show up the best on the surface of the water. If you do arrive later in the day, you can still get a great picture, but you may find that the clouds create a slight problem.

Get Captured in an Old-Time Alaskan Photo Shoot

Over at the Old Sourdough Studio, you can have your picture taken during an old-time Alaskan photo shoot. You can wear authentic Alaskan clothes and choose the theme that you love the most. This is definitely a unique way to experience this part of the country!

These are the six things you must see and do at Denali National Park. Do any of them sound like something your family will love? Let me know which options you have fallen in love with already and we can then create the perfect Alaskan itinerary for your next Alaska family vacation!
