Wedding Options for a Savannah Family Vacation 

Georgia State Railroad Museum 

There are plenty of historic sites in the city of Savannah. One of the favorites for weddings is the Georgia State Railroad Museum. Locomotives and engines will surround your wedding celebrations. This is the perfect wedding option for anyone who loves trains.  

The National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Airforce 

This is another museum in Savannah that can be transformed for your wedding day. There is an intimate chapel out in the lush gardens. Inside, the rotunda is perfect for wedding receptions of all sizes. Just don’t forget to grab a few wedding photos in front of the B-17 Flying Fortress.  

Churchill’s Pub 

Churchill’s Pub is one of the most popular pubs in Savannah. There are three areas within the pub for you to choose from. I love the rooftop terrace during the spring and fall. The wine cellar in the basement is perfect for hot summer days. And the private banquet room is nice at any time of the year.  

Old Fort Jackson 

Old Fort Jackson was built back in 1808. There are so many reasons why people don’t think of this fort when it comes time to exchange their wedding vows. However, I always wonder why, because of the gorgeous views that can be seen from here. You even have the option to have soldiers fire off muskets and cannons after your “I do’s”.  

Savannah Riverboat Cruises 

One of my favorite places for weddings in Savannah is the Savannah Riverboat. Heading out on a cruise on the Savannah River is an incredible way to begin your new life together. The best part is everything from the ceremony to the reception is in one place. So, you never need to worry about your guests getting lost along the way. Plus, the riverboat is close to many of the historic inns of Savannah.  

These are some of the best wedding options in Savannah. You can easily decide to have your wedding in this city and then celebrate with a family vacation in Savannah either before or after the wedding. The choice is yours, and I guarantee everyone will have a blast as you explore everything the city of Savannah has to offer.

The best reasons to visit the Outer Banks in the fall though include amazing weather, practically empty beaches, and the opportunities to do anything you want without the crowds. Add in the unique things to do in the Outer Banks at this time of the year, and you will instantly fall in love with the area.  

Experience Fall in the Outer Banks 

Go Hiking in the Outer Banks 

Since the weather in the Outer Banks is a little cooler in the fall, it is the perfect time to go hiking. There are multiple trails to choose from. A few favorite Outer Banks hiking trails can be found within: 

• Nags Head Woods 
• Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge 
• Kitty Hawk Woods 
• Jockeys Ridge State Park 
• Currituck Banks Coastal Estuarine Preserve 
• Roanoke Island Marshes 

Visit the Outer Banks Breweries 

Breweries can be fun family outings, especially when you are on vacation in the Outer Banks. There are quite a few breweries in the Outer Banks, so you should be able to find one close to where you are vacationing with your family. A couple of recommended Outer Banks breweries include: 

• Lost Colony Brewery and Café 
• TRiO 
• Lost Colony 

Attend the Outer Banks Seafood Festival 

The Outer Banks Seafood Festival is held every October. The event is only for one day, so you must plan your vacation in the Outer Banks carefully if you want to attend. Once the gates open, you will have the chance to watch the food being prepared, eat, and listen to music until the last note is played at the end of the day.  

Take a Long Walk on the Beach 

Since there are fewer people in the Outer Banks during the fall, it is the perfect time to take long walks on the beach. Take your time as you are walking along and stop for seashells along the way. This is an excellent time to watch the birds that spend their days by the water too. If you don’t feel like walking, you can always rent a 4WD vehicle and drive through the sand at many of the local beaches.  

Take a Scenic Drive Along Highway 12 

If your family is interested in seeing as much of the Outer Banks as possible, you must take the time to do the scenic drive along Highway 12. This drive will allow you to see areas that include: 

• Nags Head 
• Cape Hatteras National Seashore 
• Ocracoke 
• Cedar Island 
• Morehead City 
• Atlantic Beach 

You must know that you will need to take a ferry ride to some of these places. But the rides are definitely worthwhile.  

See the Marine Life at the Aquarium 

The NC Aquarium on Roanoke Island is an excellent place to see the marine life up close in the Outer Banks. This is an excellent option for those days that are a little rainy or less than perfect. I recommend also heading over to the Sea Turtle Assistance and Rehabilitation Center. You will learn a lot about conservation there.

Inside Drayton Hall

John Drayton purchased the land that he would use to construct Drayton Hall back in 1738. The design of this home includes some of the best Palladian architecture in the entire country. Drayton Hall is unique because it has never been restored. Therefore, a visit here shows you the exact materials and spaces that were created when the house was built.  

While this home has never been restored, careful steps have been taken to preserve the history of the seven generations who have lived there. Drayton Hall has been carefully stabilized and looks exactly as it did when the family stopped living there back in the 1970s.  

The Outside of Drayton Hall

Outside Drayton Hall is the Lenhardt Garden, as well as the Sally Rearhard Visitors Center. The garden began with only existing trees and native plants. However, Drayton’s son, Charles, added many exotic plants when he took over the home.  

The grounds of Drayton Hall are where you will also find the Caretaker’s House, the George McDaniel Education Center, and the Stephen and Laura Gates Exhibit Gallery. It is inside the exhibit gallery where you will find lots of history. There are many works of art, manuscripts, furniture, and archaeological items. There is also an archive that contains information on repairs to the main house after the Revolutionary War. You will also discover almost everything else about the home’s two hundred-plus years of history.  

When you are finished touring Drayton Hall and the grounds, you can take a self-guided nature walk around the property. Afterward, you must stop at the museum shop to grab a souvenir of your time at this beautiful attraction. Your purchase will ensure that the work to preserve Drayton Hall continues long into the future.
