The Keeneland Racetrack is a horse track that was founded in 1936. Thoroughbred races are held there during the months of April and October each year. The number of races varies, but there are enough options available. This ensures you can catch the action during your vacation in Lexington. You should always arrive at Keeneland Racetrack early in the day. This way, you can eat breakfast in the Equestrian Dining Room.

Family Vacation in Lexington? Catch the Action at the Keeneland Racetrack

Take a Tour of the Keeneland Racetrack

While you can easily visit this horse track to watch the races, I recommend taking a tour after your breakfast. The Morning Works Tours offer a behind-the-scenes look at horse racing. Your guide will take you to where the horses work out. From there, you will see the Keeneland Paddock, Grandstand, and the historic grounds.

Once your hour-long tour is over, you can get ready for the rest of your day. If there are races at Keeneland Race Track that day, you can find the perfect spot to sit. This could be out on the grounds or within the clubhouse.

Catch the Races at the Keeneland Racetrack

Keeneland Racetrack - Horse Racing at Keeneland Racetrack

If you think that your kids will be bored, I can guarantee they won’t! Kids of all ages love to watch the horses before and during the races. Plus, since you can have picnic lunches, they can eat all day long. I do recommend signing your kids up for the Keeneland Kids Club before your arrival. Kids age twelve and under receive many perks from this club, and it’s free!

Watching horses race is not something you can do during every family vacation. So, add this amazing experience to your family vacation in Lexington today! I can help you with all the planning. All you need to do is enjoy yourself as you are making memories to last a lifetime.

Culture is everywhere in downtown Louisville! On a Louisville family road trip, or a Louisville vacation with friends, you must check out the museums and art galleries. There are many you can add to your list. However, the two must-see museums in Louisville are the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory and the Kentucky Derby Museum. Each one offers a glimpse into baseball and horse racing. Those are two things that this city is known for!

Visit the Two Must-See Museums During Your Next Louisville Road Trip

Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory

The Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory is a baseball museum every fan will love. A visit there will have you learning about the role the Louisville slugger bat played throughout the history of the game. As you walk through this baseball museum, you will see many items on display.

A few favorite items include:

  • The Signature Wall
  • The Big Bat and Glove
  • The Bat Vault
  • Must-See Bats

There are many other options other than seeing the exhibits at the Louisville Slugger Museum. You can add a tour of the factory to your list of things to do in Louisville. The tour begins with a short movie. From there, you walk through the factory to see how the bats are made. A souvenir mini bat is your gift at the end of the tour.

Kentucky Derby Museum

Must-See in Louisville - Churchill Downs Race Track

One of the best attractions in Louisville is the Kentucky Derby Museum. This isn’t shocking, since the Kentucky Derby is a name known in households around the world. This entire museum is dedicated to horse racing. However, the greatest amount of information inside is dedicated to the Kentucky Derby.

There are two floors at this Louisville museum. Each floor offers interactive displays your family will love. You can easily tour the museum on your own. However, to enhance your experience, I recommend taking a guided tour of the track. The Historic Walking Tour will take you around the Churchill Downs Racetrack. It lasts for thirty minutes. The Behind the Scenes Walking Tour is much longer at an hour and a half. But it takes you behind the scenes, so you see so much more at the track.

There are multiple things you can do during a Louisville road trip. These two museums in Louisville are must-see attractions that your family will love. So, if you have a baseball museum fan, or a horse fan, you must add these Louisville attractions to your list.  Afterwards, you can always check out the best bourbon and whiskey distilleries in Louisville

Are you ready to plan a family vacation in Louisville and visit these two museums?

Lexington, Kentucky, has long been known for its distilleries. However, nowadays, you can add food and culture to your list of things to do in Lexington. When vacationing in Lexington, you must make sure you spend some time in the Distillery District. This area has twenty-five acres you can wander around. It was the best place to find bourbon starting in 1879 until the area was abandoned in 1958. Thankfully, the Distillery District was brought back to life in 2008.

Amazing Places in the Distillery District in Lexington

James E. Pepper Distillery

This is a distillery that was in the Distillery District for many years before it shut down and then reopened. Its whiskey is better than ever. You can take a distillery tour before having a few tastes that include the raw distillate known as White Dog.

Goodfellas Pizza

Pizza in the Distilling District in Lexington

Families of all sizes will love grabbing a few pizzas during a family vacation. As an adult, you will love the two hundred-plus varieties of bourbon available at the bar. I recommend sitting outside on the patio, so you can watch the people wandering around the Distillery District.

Ethereal Brewing

If whiskey and bourbon are not your things, no worries! I have you covered with Ethereal Brewing! They brew everything from IPAs and Witbiers to a few beers that are considered unusual. This is a family-friendly destination that welcomes dogs too!

Crank & Boom Ice Cream Lounge

At the end of a day during a family vacation, there are times you need some ice cream. The Crank & Boom Ice Cream Lounge is the perfect spot. Everything they serve is made in-house. While you can order a plain cone, you might want to consider the Stout Dreams. It is a cocktail made with coffee stout ice cream and Buffalo Trace bourbon cream. Basically, yumminess at its best!

Manchester Music Hall

The Manchester Music Hall was a warehouse for bourbon back in the 1800s. Nowadays, it is a concert venue. You can usually find a concert taking place every weekend and other events throughout the week.

Ms. Renzy Studio

Art lovers will love the chance to walk around Ms. Renzy Studio. This art studio is fifteen hundred square feet. It focuses on local artists. Some of the artists can be found there when the studio is open. This allows everyone to ask questions about the art before making purchases.

These are only a few of the amazing places to find the best food, drinks, and culture in the Distillery District in Lexington. There are so many other places you can wander into and visit during your vacation in Lexington.  I would love to know which areas are at the top of your list. You can share your favorites with me as I am planning your next family vacation.

Did you know that bourbon was first made and served in Kentucky?? Distilleries in the state, and especially Louisville, have been crafting batches of this liquid since the 18th century. They have made a few small tweaks over the years, but the bourbon still tastes amazing! During a Louisville family vacation, you must visit some of the well-known bourbon and whiskey distilleries in Louisville.

Must-Visit Bourbon & Whiskey Distilleries in Louisville

Evan Williams Bourbon

Evan Williams Bourbon first opened on the shores of the Ohio River back in 1783. It is one of the best bourbon distilleries in Louisville. You can take a tour to see how this distillery makes its different types of bourbon. Afterward, you can taste many of the different bourbons to find your favorite. Then you can purchase a bottle to take home from your Louisville family vacation.

Michter’s Fort Nelson Distillery

Whiskey Distillery Stills

Michter’s is the distillery that was once known as Shenk’s and Bomberger’s. This well-known whiskey distillery in Louisville was founded back in 1753. It currently makes some of the best whiskey in the state. The distillery is located within the Shively area of Louisville, while the Fort Nelson Building is located on Louisville’s Museum Row. It is best to make reservations for a tour of this whiskey distillery, but you can get lucky on occasion if you just walk in. They do offer three different tour options, so you can easily choose the one that fits in your Louisville family vacation schedule the best.

Old Forester Distilling Company

The founder of the Old Forester Distilling Company was George Garvin Brown. He made the first bottle of Old Forester Whiskey in 1870. Tours of this Louisville distillery are also available. It is best to do the tours prior to having a tasting so you know how the whiskey is made.

While the tours of the distilleries in Louisville are wonderful, there are many other ways to taste whiskey and bourbon during your Louisville family getaway. The Urban Bourbon Trail is comprised of multiple bars and restaurants that serve bourbon and whiskey.

If you are doing a Kentucky road trip, you can even do the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. This trail takes you to many of the distilleries that are located throughout the state. One of the best bourbon-tasting options will be at Jim Beam. Let me know if you want me to add that destination to your itinerary.

Jim Beam has been making bourbon since 1795. The original bourbon was called Old Jake Beam Sour Mash. That original was a local favorite. People quickly fell in love with it even though there were two thousand distillers in the area at the time. It is easy to see how Jim Beam has made bourbon all these years. All you need to do is take a tour of the Jim Beam Distillery when you are vacationing in Clermont, Kentucky.

Tour Jim Beam for a Taste of the Bourbon Life

A tour of the Jim Beam distillery in Clermont will have you going behind the scenes. You will see how the bourbon is distilled. However, you will also learn about the aging process and how the end result is perfected each time.

If you cannot make it to Clermont, you can still have some Jim Beam in Louisville. The Jim Beam Urban Stillhouse is located there. It is mainly a bar. But there is a small distillery and bottling line. This means you can still see how the bourbon is made during your family vacation.

Types of Jim Beam Bourbon

Tour Jim Beam - Statue of J Beam

There are many different types of Jim Beam bourbon available. I can’t list them all out without boring you. However, a few of the more popular options include:

  • Jim Beam Single Barrel
  • Jim Beam Double Oak
  • Jim Beam Rye
  • Jim Beam Maple
  • Jim Beam Apple
  • Jim Beam Vanilla
  • Jim Beam Hot Toddy

Ways to Drink Jim Beam

Fred Noe is the current distiller at Jim Beam. He is part of the 7th generation of the Beam family. Since he has been around bourbon his entire life, he knows a thing or two about drinking it. According to Fred, you can drink bourbon any way you like!

Here are a few cocktail options for your Jim Beam bourbon:

  • Beam and Cola
  • Ginger Highball
  • Kentucky Sunrise
  • Bourbon Sour
  • Whiskey Sour
  • Apple Highball
  • Kentucky Sweet Tea

I am sure you can find something to drink when you slide up to the bar after a tour of Jim Beam. And if nothing on this list appeals to you, the bartender should have the perfect solution!

Are you ready to start your Jim Beam bourbon journey?
