This is still a working ranch, and it is the oldest one in the West. It was placed on the National Register for Historic Places back in 1983. You will see so much history from the one-hundred-fifty years that this was a ranch. This is all in addition to the history discovered by the indigenous groups that lived there.

Buildings to See When Exploring Fielding Garr Ranch 

Bunk House 

The Bunk House is one of the older buildings on the Fielding Garr Ranch. The inside is furnished to look like it did back in the 1960s. This is where all the seasonal hands slept when they were not tending the fields.  

Cellar 

The Cellar has had many uses over the years. When you are down there, you can use your imagination to determine how it would have looked filled with different types of foods.  

Ranch House 

The Ranch House contains a kitchen, dining room, Max’s room, living room, south bedroom, and middle bedroom. The kitchen is from the 1970s, while the dining room shows what socialization looked like back in the 1940s. This is where Max, the ranch manager’s young son, slept. This child was twelve years old at the time and would ride his horse when he finished all his work in the fields.  

The living room looks like it did back in the 1840s when Fielding Garr lived there. The south bedroom is also from that time period, while the middle bedroom has furnishings from some timeframe between the two bedrooms.  

Spring House 

The Spring House was the building used to make cheese and to keep other dairy items cold. Once refrigeration was available, this building would have been used to keep food cold.  

There is an abundance of history to discover at the Fielding Garr Ranch, and you can see it all during your family vacation in Utah.

Gardens Within the Red Butte Garden

As you wander around these gardens, you will see that each one has a theme. A few of the theme gardens include: 

• Fragrance Garden 
• Four Seasons Garden 
• Herb Garden 
• Children’s Garden 
• Water Pavilion Garden 
• Rose Garden 
• Wildflower Meadow 

As for plants, the Red Butte Garden is filled with those as well. The conifer collection and ornamental grass collection both offer a way to appreciate plant life without flowers present.  

Best Time to Visit the Red Butte Garden

You can easily visit the Red Butte Garden throughout the year. However, you will find the number of flowers blooming changes throughout the seasons. While you can simply walk from garden to garden, I recommend taking to the trails if you have the time. Each one of the trails will lead you to something amazing. You will also spot many different animals as you are walking along the trails. Some of the animals you will see include coyotes, bobcats, rabbits, deer, and birds.  

I recommend planning your visit for when a summer concert or their Poetry in the Garden series is being held. Each one offers a wonderful look at how much better music and poetry sound when you are listening to it while surrounded by flowers and nature.

Everything You Must Know to Hike Buffalo Point Trail

Best Time to Hike Buffalo Point Trail 

The best times to hike Buffalo Point Trail is during the spring, fall, and winter. The temperatures are too hot during the summer. However, it is usually the gnats and flies that bite that causes people to avoid this trail during the summer months.  

Things to See as You Hike Buffalo Point Trail 

Visitor Center 

I always recommend that everyone begins their time at the Visitor Center. A quick stop here will have you learning about the area and what you will see during your hike. You can also see where a few things are located from the observation deck.  

Wildlife 

There is plenty of wildlife roaming around Antelope Island State Park. That means you will see plenty of those animals when you are out on Buffalo Point Trail. You will really want to keep a close eye out for bison. They are big enough that you should see them before you get too close.  

Great Salt Lake 

Great Salt Lake is amazing, and the views you can see of it from this trail are picturesque. I recommend taking pictures from different perspectives, so you can appreciate this lake for the beauty it shares.  

Wasatch Mountains 

There is no point in climbing all the way to this summit and not paying attention to the surrounding mountains. The Wasatch Mountains are just in the distance, and you can get some great pictures of them from the trail.  

The Sunset and the Stars 

While you are going to spend most of your time hiking Buffalo Point Trail, there are a couple of other things that are better. I recommend staying at the summit of Buffalo Point until later in the day. This will allow you to find the perfect spot to watch the sunset. You can even stay later than that to watch the stars as they light up the sky.  

Hiking Buffalo Point Trail is one of the favorite things to do during a Utah road trip. I can easily add this to your itinerary, along with so many other things to do in Utah.
