Mother’s Day is quickly approaching. And there is no better time than now to start planning a mom getaway in Lapland. Lapland is a gorgeous destination in the northernmost region of Finland. Every season brings a new adventure in this area of the world. The beautiful summer days are encompassed in sunlight 24/7. The colder winter days and nights are surrounded by darkness. However, the dancing Northern Lights will brighten the sky during the winter just when you need it the most! There is no bad time to schedule a mom getaway in Lapland. This is excellent news if you cannot get away from the stress of work and the hectic schedule of your family during prime travel time. So, if you have been wanting to cross a destination off your bucket list, Lapland should be your first choice when it comes to getting away from it all.

Plan a Mom Getaway in Lapland for the Ultimate in Relaxation and Fun

Where to Stay in Lapland

Plan a Mom Getaway in Lapland for the Ultimate in Relaxation and Fun - Igloo in Lapland for Viewing the Northern Lights

There are an abundance of hotels, hostels, cottages, and Airbnb’s to choose from when you are taking a vacation in Lapland. However, if you truly want to make this a memorable vacation for the books, you must consider an accommodation that is out of the box.

My favorite accommodation for a mom getaway in Lapland is one of the igloos. You can choose an igloo made of ice or glass. The igloos made of glass are much warmer thanks to the electric heaters. And yet, you still get the feel of sleeping in an igloo where there is nothing but glass between you and the beautiful surroundings.

While the igloos come complete with a bathroom and small kitchen, the best part is they are excellent for viewing the Northern Lights from the comfort of your own bed.

Another stunning winter option would be staying inside a snow hotel within a snow village. The hotel is rebuilt every year with a new theme. While the scenery may be different each year, the ambiance never is. So, if you decide to make a vacation in Lapland a tradition, you can return to enjoy the ice chapel, ice restaurant, and ice bar.

If an igloo or snow hotel isn’t on your list, you can always consider a treehouse hotel. A room in a treehouse would be perfect for summer nights when you can sit outside amongst nature.

Weather in Lapland

So, I already mentioned that the sun shines all day and night during the summer. And winter is full of darkness. But what about the weather for your mom’s getaway in Lapland? What should you expect depending on the time of year you visit?

Well, Lapland appears to have eight seasons instead of the traditional four! Yet, to keep things simple, let’s talk about the main seasons of the region.

The winter months bring a coating of snow, creating a majestic winter wonderland. Those are the months you will want to visit if you have been dreaming of white powdery snow everywhere.

The spring brings slightly warmer weather, and yet, you can still ski and snowshoe. Once summer hits, the snow will be mostly gone under the never-ending shining sun. You can experience the beauty of Lapland all day and night, but the Northern Lights will never appear. That alone is one reason to schedule your visit for another time of the year.

The fall in Lapland brings brilliant rustic colors. It is an excellent time to hike and explore while capturing the countryside in photographs to share with friends back home.

Thrilling Activities for a Mom Getaway in Lapland

Plan a Mom Getaway in Lapland for the Ultimate in Relaxation and Fun - Dog Sledding

Your kids may think you are boring because, well, all moms are, especially if the kids are teenagers. But you can easily have a blast during your mom’s getaway in Lapland, thanks to all the thrilling activities that are available. I guarantee you can pack your days completely with exciting activities. And when nighttime comes, you can choose whether to keep going. Or crash for one of the best night’s sleep you’ve had in a long time!

I recommend beginning with a little husky sledding. After all, you know you won’t be able to resist the cuddly dogs! During the winter months, you can venture out on safari as the dogs take you to see some incredible scenery.

If you happen to visit during the warmer summer months, then a visit to the husky kennel is still advised. And don’t worry; when you visit the kennel, you will walk away with a wealth of information. That is when the dogs start to prepare for the following winter, so it is all about training, relaxing, and having fun.

No mom can vacation in Lapland and not take advantage of the fabulous sauna experiences! There are numerous saunas in Lapland. I would recommend visiting numerous saunas, so you can experience all the different forms. The reason for this is the wooden and smoke saunas are much different than the electric and ice saunas.

Remember, as a mom, you deserve a little time to yourself. A visit to a sauna is an excellent way to unwind and relax, as you have this time away from the hustle and bustle of real life.

Other thrilling activities you must do during your mom getaway in Lapland include:

  • Skiing
  • Snowshoeing
  • Bicycle riding
  • Cruises
  • Quad bike rides
  • Reindeer-pulled sleigh rides

See how to spend four incredible days in Lapland during your mom getaway or family vacation.

Amazing Attractions to Visit in Lapland

One of the most popular attractions to visit in Lapland is Santa Claus Village. You may not have your kids with you during your vacation in Lapland. But that doesn’t mean that the kid in you can’t come out for a little bit!

During your visit, you can get into the Christmas spirit while walking through the village and checking on the reindeer. Plus, don’t forget to give Santa your children’s (and your) wish lists.

The Levi Ice Gallery is a phenomenal place to visit during the winter months. The six-kilometer trail takes you on an adventure to see multiple ice-carved sculptures. The gallery is next to the restaurant, so you can easily grab a bite to eat and a drink during your adventure.

The Luosto Amethyst Mine is only open during the summer months. Therefore, if you want this on your Lapland itinerary, we must plan your vacation there accordingly. When you are not mining for amethyst, you will find yourself staring out at the view of Pyhä-Luosto National Park.

Tips for Visiting Lapland on a Mom Getaway

There are a few things you must know before you begin to plan your mom’s getaway in Lapland. The tips I like to share the most include:

  • Choose the town you are staying in carefully. I always recommend choosing what you want to do during your vacation in Lapland and then choosing where you will stay. This will ensure you are not traveling great distances every day to check everything off your itinerary.
  • Always pack wisely for your mom’s getaway in Lapland! It can get cold in this part of the world, so you must make sure you pack warm clothing.
  • Helsinki is near Lapland, so it is possible to combine a visit to these two destinations for your mom’s getaway.

All moms need time away from home, and Lapland is the perfect mom getaway destination! I can easily help you plan a vacation in Lapland that gives you everything you want and so much more. And trust me when I say you will be more than ready to tackle the challenges that will be waiting for you back at work and home when your vacation is over!

One of the most beautiful countries in the world is Norway. This country offers gorgeous landscapes, thrilling family adventures, and plenty of cultures. Add in delicious cuisine, lively festivals, and architectural features, and you have a destination everyone in your family will love. Before you start planning your family vacation in Norway, there are a few things you should know. That is why I am sharing my travel guide to Norway with you today.

My Travel Guide to Norway

History of Norway

The history of Norway begins long before the Viking Age. All the way back to 10000 BCE, people arrived in this area to hunt and fish. They continued to settle along the icy coastline while moving inland a little to farm.

Once the Viking Age began, there was a battle with Britain over who owned the land. Some people were even expelled from Norway. Those people moved to Greenland in hopes of a better life.

Norway finally received full independence in 1905. This country has had many other changes over the years. Now in the 21st century, history is still happening. One of the most exciting things is people can now hold dual citizenship while living in Norway. This may be helpful if your family falls in love with this destination during your family vacation.

Weather in Norway

Spring in Norway

Spring usually begins during the month of May in Norway. The sun is normally shining at this time of the year. The temperatures start to climb too. However, don’t expect it to be too warm during a family vacation in Norway during the spring. And since the snow is melting, it will be wet and muddy.

Summer in Norway

The temperatures in Norway reach the upper 60s and low 70s during the summer. There are days when it will reach 80 degrees. So be prepared for warmer days on occasion. It will never get too hot in some regions of Norway. It is always best to check the weather of where you will be staying prior to packing.

Fall in Norway

The weather starts to get cooler during the fall. You may still see some warmer days, but they are few and far between.

Winter in Norway

The winter months can be bitterly cold in Norway. The temperatures usually fall well below freezing and stay there all day long. Snow will fall regularly too. Winter also brings really dark, long days here. Keep that in mind while planning your family vacation.

My Travel Guide to Norway - Warm Clothes

What to Pack for a Family Vacation in Norway

Packing for a family vacation in Norway can be challenging, depending on when you are visiting. Your family can usually wear T-shirts and shorts or pants during the day in the summer. Yet at night, you will need a sweater or light jacket to keep warm.

Spring and fall months will require layers, as well as a raincoat and boots. During early spring or late fall, you may need even warmer clothes for your family trip.

Heavy jackets, scarves, hats, and gloves are a must during the winter in Norway. This is especially true if your family plans on spending a lot of time outdoors. It is best to pack multiple layers for each day, so you can dress accordingly. I actually recommend wool clothing when visiting Norway during the winter because it will keep you the warmest.

My travel guide to Norway doesn’t cover everything you should pack for your family vacation. Everyone has their own needs and wants while traveling, so simply use this as a guide and pack what you know your family will need!

Activities to Embrace While on a Family Vacation in Norway

My Travel Guide to Norway - Cable Car

One of the best ways to explore Norway is by hiking the local trails. This is an excellent activity to get your family outside. Plus, you get to see some of the gorgeous landscapes throughout this country.

Another option is to rent bicycles and ride your way through the countryside. This might be good if you want to see a few more places during your family vacation.

During the winter months, you can head to the nearest ski slopes. And yet, during the warmer months of the year, you can go surfing or rafting or do a little kayaking on a river.

One of the favorite activities in Norway, though, is checking out the Northern Lights or seeing the Midnight Sun. The Northern Lights can normally be seen in Norway between late September and late March. As for the Midnight Sun, this natural phenomenon occurs during the summer.

Other activities to embrace while on a family vacation in Norway include:

  • Fishing
  • Birdwatching
  • Wildlife Safari
  • Train Ride
  • Ferry Ride
  • Scenic Drive
  • Cable Car Ride

Top Places to See While on a Family Vacation in Norway

There are just as many fabulous places to see while on a family vacation in Norway. The Polar Museum should be at the top of your list. This museum is within a former warehouse that was constructed back in 1837. Inside the museum, you will see galleries filled with the history of the Arctic expeditions.

Other intriguing museums include the Ibsen Museum, the Viking Ship Museum, and the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History.

Over at Vigeland Sculpture Park, your family can wander around to see more than two hundred sculptures created by Gustav Vigeland. These sculptures are all made from granite and bronze. There are several sections within this park. I recommend walking through each section completely before heading to the next.

Visiting Oslo Cathedral should also be at the top of your list during a family vacation in Norway. This baroque church was the first church to be established in the country. While inside, you should pay close attention to the large organ, as well as to the colorful murals on the ceiling.

My Travel Guide to Norway - Arctic Cathedral

Other top places to see while in Norway include:

  • Geirangerfjord Region
  • Arctic Cathedral
  • Akershus Castle
  • Village of Geiranger
  • Oslo City Hall
  • Tromso Fjords

There are many other things to do in Norway, so don’t think you need only to include what is in my travel guide.

Amazing Festivals to Attend in Norway

You will find plenty of festivals to attend during your Norway family vacation if you plan your trip right. I can’t possibly share all the different festivals in my travel guide to Norway. However, I am going to share the best ones.

Oya Festival

The Oya Festival is considered one of the biggest music festivals in Norway. This festival was first held in Oslo in 1999. Since then, it has continued to grow while featuring popular musicians over the course of four days.

Riddu Riddu

The Riddu Riddu Festival began back in 1991 as a way to protect and share the Sami culture with others. This festival is normally held during the month of July in Northern Troms.

Saint Lucia’s Day

Saint Lucia’s Day is held on December 13th to celebrate the festival of light. This is the arrival of Christmas and is considered a major Christmas feast day. Girls will dress up as Saint Lucia, as they sing songs and carry lights.

Tips for a Fabulous Family Vacation in Norway

I find it is always helpful to be aware of certain things before going on vacation anywhere. Especially when you are traveling with your family. There are a few tips you need to know in order to have a fabulous family vacation in Norway. Those tips include:

  • Renting a car is usually a must when on vacation in Norway. Public transportation can be slow and unreliable.
  • Book accommodations, transportation, and activities well in advance. Norway is a country that fills up quickly with travelers, especially at certain times of the year.
  • Credit cards are used instead of cash in Norway. Keep that in mind, so you have a credit card that won’t charge you fees every time you use it. You should also alert your credit card company that you are traveling so they don’t flag your account as possibly being used fraudulently.
  • Pack the appropriate clothes and remember layers so you don’t freeze during your stay. If you have teenagers that love packing their own clothes without listening to your advice, either throw a few things in your suitcase for them or be prepared to make a few purchases upon your arrival. After all, we all know how teenagers are when it comes to dressing for the weather!
  • Always buy the chocolate. Norwegian chocolate is the best! Buy extra to take home with you. Like, by the case, so you don’t run out too quickly!

Now that you have read my travel guide to Norway, you know many of the things you should be aware of for your family vacation. Yes, there are other things you may need to be aware of, but we can cover those as I am creating your personalized family vacation itinerary. I always make sure my clients have everything they need before heading to a new destination for a family trip.

So, are you ready to have me personalize a family vacation itinerary for your next trip?

Are you ready to plan an incredible family vacation in Maine this year? I completely understand your desire to get away and can tell you that Maine is perfect for families looking to disconnect from it all on vacation! There are plenty of outdoor adventures in the state of Maine. But in addition to the wooded areas, you will find spectacular beaches next to the sparkling ocean. That means you can have a little of everything when you spend a few days, a week, or even a couple of weeks reconnecting with your family on your next vacation.

Plan Your Family Vacation in Maine with My Travel Guide

History in Maine

Maine has quite a long history, with the European settlers arriving on the shoreline back in 1525. Those Europeans did not settle in the area, though. The first European settlement ended up being in 1604. Unfortunately, a war broke out between the Europeans, or I should say the French and the Indian tribes living in the area. The French were defeated in that war and chose to form close bonds with the Indians instead of leaving the area.

For years, the area we now know as Maine was considered part of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. It wasn’t until March 15, 1820, that Maine became the 23rd state. There weren’t as many people left in Maine by the time it became a state because a lot of people chose to head out west. Ohio Fever caused numerous people to choose to venture west for warmer weather.

The locals who remained were thrilled with the lumber and shipbuilding boost that arrived with the California Gold Rush. However, people on the ships that took the goods to California ended up staying out there.

Nowadays, more than a million people live in the state of Maine. And that number grows every summer as travelers arrive to enjoy the beauty this part of the country is known for.

Weather in Maine

Spring in Maine

Maine’s location up in the far northeast makes it difficult to leave the snow and frost behind too early in the spring. Therefore, you should expect cool temperatures and a chance of frost through the end of April. This season begins with temperatures averaging 55 degrees, while May brings temperatures in the middle 60s.

Summer in Maine

The months of June through September are considered summer in Maine. Most days are warm during this time of the year, but it is not unusual to have a 90-degree day or two during the summer. Of course, the water in the ocean never catches up to the air temperatures, so you should expect that to be cold the entire season.

Fall in Maine

The days might still be warm during the month of September and even October during the fall. But the nights have a crisp coolness that allows the leaves to start changing color. The temperatures drop quickly from there, with daytime highs in the 40s by November. In fact, you may even see some snow flying around during the months of October and November.

Winter in Maine

Winter is long in the state of Maine, especially when the snow arrives early. Daytime temperatures will only reach 30 to 40 degrees, with the temperatures dropping to almost zero at night. Gray is the color of choice during the winter, yet the sun will peak out on occasion. Just don’t expect to see the sun too late in the day because the winter months have it setting by four in the afternoon.

What to Pack for a Vacation in Maine

When you decide to take a family vacation in Maine, you will have to pack according to the season you are visiting in. The summer months will have you wearing shorts, t-shirts, sundresses, and sandals. During the fall, winter, and spring, it will be all about pants, sweaters, sweatshirts, hats, gloves, and boots. Extra layers are necessary during the winter months, too, especially if you plan on being outside a lot.

Hiking will require hiking boots, while white water rafting and other water activities will require additional clothing for when you get wet. And don’t forget towels, which are helpful at any time of the year.

Activities to Embrace While on Vacation in Maine

There are so many different activities you can do with your family when you are on vacation in Maine. One of the first things you will want to do when you arrive is to walk along the shoreline. Of course, this is only if you are spending time by the ocean. If you are closer to destinations like Acadia National Park, you may prefer to hike the trails or drive around the scenic loop.

There are numerous biking trails you must consider if your entire family loves to ride bikes. The Kennebec River Rail Trail is an all-time favorite. Be prepared, though, because it is six and a half miles long. Don’t worry; you can do a section of it at a time so you do not get too tired out.

Whale watching is another fun family activity when you are vacationing in Maine. We must plan your trip carefully if you want to go whale watching though. These majestic creatures are only in the water along this shoreline from the middle of April until the end of September.

Other incredible family activities in Maine include:

  • Apple or Strawberry Picking
  • White Water Rafting
  • Skiing
  • Hiking to Waterfalls
  • Waterpark Adventures

Top Places to See on Vacation in Maine

Places to See in Maine - LL Bean Boot

Choosing which attractions to place at the top of your list of things to see in Maine is going to be a struggle. There are so many amazing attractions and destinations, and they aren’t close to each other. Depending on your personal top places, we may need to be a little creative when it comes to getting you to them all. No worries, though, because I can plan the perfect family vacation despite the logistical conundrum.

One of the top places on your list must be Acadia National Park. This impressive park has it all, including gorgeous sights and thrilling adventures. I recommend arriving at the park very early one morning, so you can watch the sun as it begins to rise. When you add this activity to your list of things to do, you will be one of the first people to watch the sunrise in the entire country!

Over in Portland’s Old Port, you will discover a ton of history along the cobblestone streets. The older colonial buildings are now home to numerous restaurants, shops, and breweries. People-watching is a must in this destination, so plan an extra hour or two for a different type of family activity.

If you have kids that are scared of nothing and brave, you may want to try tackling the Allagash Waterway with them. This 92-mile stretch of water will take you to the tucked-away spaces in the state. You can easily canoe or kayak as much of this waterway as you wish, with trips ranging from one day to ten days.

Winter months must be spent over at Sugarloaf and Sunday River. The skiing is the best in that part of the state, and the snowboarding isn’t too bad either!

Other spectacular places to see in Maine include:

  • Pemaquid Point Lighthouse
  • Desert of Maine
  • Kennebunkport
  • Stephen King’s Home
  • The Giant Boot at LL Bean
  • Lenny the Chocolate Moose at Len Libby Candies
  • Mount Katahdin
  • Cabbage Island

Amazing Festivals You Can’t-Miss in Maine

Most of the festivals you find in Maine are going to be all about the food! This shouldn’t be surprising since delicious food is everywhere in this state!

Maine Whoopie Pie Festival

Yes, there is a Whoopie Pie Festival in Maine! If you do not know what a whoopie pie is, let me share. Imagine two soft chocolate cookies stuffed with a delectable creamy filling that will have your mouth watering from the very first bite. This festival has taken place since 2009, and since the whoopie pie is now the official state treat, this festival isn’t stopping any time soon.

The day begins with a 3K walk or run, so you can earn your whoopie pie of the day. Afterward, you can wander around to see what the one hundred different vendors are offering as you listen to live music in the background. You definitely won’t want to miss being a participant in the whoopie pie eating contest in the afternoon!

Maine Potato Blossom Festival

The Maine Potato Blossom Festival is a 9-day event that is held every July. There are eighty-five different events for you to attend, although you will need to choose between a few that are happening at the same time. A few of the most popular options include the BBQ Cook-Off, live entertainment, yard sales throughout the town, and interactive exhibits. The fireworks over the river are the perfect ending to this festival.

Kennebunkport Festival

This is one of the festivals held in Maine every year that donates to local charities. This weeklong event is filled with art, culture, and food. As you are walking around, you can listen to live music or stop to watch one of the performances. You must attend a cocktail hour, as well as a dinner during this week of fun. After all, the proceeds are going to a good cause!

Traveling to the Galapagos Islands is considered a dream family vacation for many. If you have been considering making this trip with your family, you might want to be aware of what you can do once you get there. Today, I am sharing the best things to do in the Galapagos Islands with family. You don’t need to do everything on this list. However, you should consider the activities that will allow you to make memories with your family.

Best Things to Do During a Family Vacation in the Galapagos Islands

Go Snorkeling

The sparkling water surrounding the Galapagos Islands will be beckoning to you from the moment you arrive. Some of the best memories you have of a family vacation in the Galapagos Islands will be of your family snorkeling in the water. During this family adventure, you can spot different fish and green sea turtles. If you are extremely lucky, you may even spot the world’s smallest penguin.

There are quite a few amazing spots for snorkeling amongst these islands. Over near San Cristobal, I recommend checking out Kicker Rock. It is all about Pinnacle Rock on San Bartolome. And off the coast of Floreana, consider Devil’s Crown. I promise it is not as intimidating as the name sounds!

Head out to Sea on a Kayak

If you don’t want to spend your days immersed in the water, you may want to consider climbing into a kayak instead. Paddling along the shoreline is a fabulous experience. Especially when you take the time to explore the secret coves, beaches, and mangrove estuaries.

Taking a glass-bottom boat ride is another option if you don’t want to navigate the water on your own. Plus, you can see all the marine life, including sharks, swimming underneath the boat.

Head Out on a Hike

One of the best places to hike is within Galapagos National Park. It is important to understand that visitors like yourself are not allowed in every area throughout the park. So, keep an eye out for signage and follow the directions of the locals if you do venture out.

Thankfully, there are marked trails around the Galapagos Islands. Checking out the sea lions is easy when you take one of the lava rock trails. There is even a trail that leads to Sierra Negra, which is the second-largest volcano caldera in the world.

Hiking the trails on these islands is one of the best ways to see the sights. It is also an excellent way to make memories with your family.

Catch a Wave Surfing

A couple of the beaches on the islands allow surfing. It is best to check the beach regulations before heading out on the water, though. Galapagos Beach is one of the best beaches for surfing, according to the locals. Keep that in mind if you want me to add it to your itinerary.

Take a Panga Ride

A panga ride is also known as a dinghy ride. Taking one of these rides is one of the best ways to check out the wildlife in shores, coves, and caves. Make sure you take your camera with you. There will be plenty of opportunities to take pictures of your family.

Visit the Charles Darwin Research Station

The Charles Darwin Research Station is the best place to learn about conservation on the Galapagos Islands. During your visit, you can meet baby giant tortoises and learn about the island’s tortoise breeding program.

Go Island Hopping on a Galapagos Cruise

Day cruises are available on the Galapagos Islands. These cruises are an excellent way to go island hopping and check out the different islands. You can even see the remote islands many people don’t know about.

Visit the Interpretation Center of San Cristobal

One of the easiest ways to learn about the history, geology, and biology of the Galapagos Islands is to visit the Interpretation Center of San Cristobal. This educational attraction will allow your family to learn about the islands in a short period of time.

Visit the Wall of Tears

The Wall of Tears, or El Muro de las Lagrimas, can be found on Isabela Island. This historical site is where prisoners were sent to collect and stack volcanic rocks. Those rocks were stacked to create this 65-foot-high wall that seems to continue on forever.

Check Out the Scalesia Trees at Los Gemelos and Scalesia Forest

Scalesia trees have grown over what was once an area filled with lava tunnels. These trees are endangered and can only be found on the islands. This is one family adventure that will be unique if you choose to take the time to do it.

Deliver a Letter from the Post Office

In the Galapagos Islands, it has long been a tradition for people to take a letter from Post Office Bay on Floreana Island and deliver it to the recipient on another island. This is another unique thing to do in the Galapagos Islands that your family won’t want to pass up!

Grab Some Fish from the Santa Cruz Fish Market

Okay, so you will only want to grab your own fish from the Santa Cruz Fish Market if you are staying somewhere with a kitchen. If not, you won’t have a place to cook it. However, you can still visit this fish market to watch the chefs of restaurants, locals, and even sea lions fight over the best catch of the day.

Go Cliff Diving at Las Grietas

Cliff diving takes nerves of steel, so I will understand if you want to skip this family adventure in the Galapagos Islands. However, if the kids love adrenaline rushes, head over to Las Grietas on Santa Cruz Island. This area offers a unique ecosystem since it is where both freshwater and saltwater meet.

If you don’t want to dive from the cliffs, you can stick to swimming and snorkeling in the crystal-clear water.

Relax on a Sandy Beach

You can’t travel all the way to the Galapagos Islands for a family vacation and not spend a little time relaxing on a sandy beach! Tortuga Bay, over on Santa Cruz Island, is a favorite of many. I recommend visiting during the months of April and May. This is when the turtle hatchlings emerge and head toward the sea. It is quite a sight to watch!

If you miss that time of year, don’t worry. You will still find this isolated beach is the perfect place to unwind and have a few laughs with the kids.

These are some of the best things to do during a family vacation in the Galapagos Islands. There are many others, and I can share them with you when we chat about your next family vacation.

The numerous islands that make up the Galapagos Islands can be found in the eastern Pacific Ocean, and I’m sharing everything you need to know in this travel guide. They are an amazing destination for family vacations or couple getaways. You can easily spend most of your time on a single island. Or you can explore multiple areas during an island-hopping adventure. The choice is yours and I invite you to read through this travel guide to the Galapagos Islands. As your travel advisor, I can easily plan everything you want to do and throw in a few extra activities you may not have been aware of. You simply need to enjoy your time on the islands and make memories with those you love.

History of the Galapagos Islands

To begin this travel guide, I wanted to start with the history of the Galapagos. The Galapagos Islands were discovered back in 1535. Dominican friar, Fray Tomas de Berlanga, arrived on the islands at this time. He had basically set out from Panama in hopes of reaching Peru. He missed his original destination but wasn’t disappointed by the beauty he discovered.

Pirates and hunters were the primary inhabitants until Ecuador claimed the islands as its own in 1832. The Galapagos Islands became even more popular once Charles Darwin visited to check out the flora and fauna in 1835.

Weather in the Galapagos Islands

There are not four seasons in the Galapagos Islands. These islands only have two seasons. Those seasons are the wet season and the dry season.

The wet season is normally between the months of December and May. Despite being rainy, the precipitation normally arrives quickly and then leaves within a short period of time.

The dry season is the rest of the year. It really isn’t completely dry during this season, though. Light rains are common during this season. In fact, it is common for the Galapagos Islands to see even more rain during the dry season than in the wet season.

The temperatures in the Galapagos Islands are pretty consistent year-round. The average temperature is 75 degrees. It is slightly cooler during the dry season and warmer during the wet season.

Best Time to Visit the Galapagos Islands

The best time to visit the Galapagos Islands is between the months of December and May. The sun is always shining during those months. At least in between the quick rainstorms. Plus, the temperatures are a little warmer, and there is less wind.

What to Pack for a Family Vacation in the Galapagos Islands

You will want to pack shorts, t-shirts, and bathing suits for a family vacation in the Galapagos Islands. A pair of pants, a raincoat, sneakers, and flip-flops will also come in handy. Women will want sundresses too.

Basically, think about packing clothing for warm weather with a little rain. If you are staying in the higher elevations, then slightly warmer clothing may be necessary.

Best Activities for a Family Vacation in the Galapagos Islands

Do you love to stay busy when you take family vacations? Well, if you do, the Galapagos Islands are the perfect destination!

Getting up close to marine life is simple when you are on vacation in the Galapagos Islands. You can head out for a swim or do a little snorkeling. However, my favorite activity in the Galapagos Islands is scuba diving.

If you don’t want to be physically in the water, I recommend going sea kayaking. You can still check out the marine life. You’ll just be in a kayak while doing it!

Relaxing on one of the many beaches can be fun. But taking your family out on a hiking adventure is even better. You can all make memories as you explore unique lava rock trails. One of those trails will lead you to the top of Sierra Negra.

Other incredible activities to do during a family vacation in the Galapagos Islands include:

  • Surfing
  • Horseback riding
  • Mountain biking
  • Dinghy rides
  • Boat tours
  • Stargazing

Top Places to See During Your Family Vacation in the Galapagos Islands

Since the Galapagos Islands are, well, islands, you may think there is not too many attractions to check out. That couldn’t be further from the truth! There are so many places to see during a family vacation in the Galapagos Islands.

The very first place on your list should be the Charles Darwin Research Station. This attraction can be found over on Santa Cruz Island. This is an excellent place to learn about this history of the islands, as well as the flora and fauna. Outside in the gardens, you will have the chance to see a few of the giant Galapagos tortoises.

Hiking to the Wall of Tears on the island of Isabela is always a must. The trail is mostly flat. This makes the hike possible for almost everyone. Before you reach the Wall of Tears, you will pass by lakes and mangroves. The Wall of Tears was made from lava rocks and still stands unfinished at the end of the trail.

Another fascinating place on the island of Isabela is Los Tuneles. These are the volcanic tunnels on the island. Walking through them will be an experience you will never forget.

Other places to see while on a family vacation in the Galapagos Islands include:

  • Tortuga Bay
  • Punta Cormorant
  • Rancho Primicias Galapagos Tortoise Ranch
  • Tagus Cove
  • Interpretation Center of San Cristobel
  • Pinnacle Rock
  • Albemarle Point
  • Maprae Museum

Best Foods to Try in the Galapagos Islands

Despite being out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, you won’t need to worry about finding delicious foods to eat. All the islands are known for their culinary delights. Most dishes will contain an abundance of fresh seafood. Although, meat and potato dishes are easy to find too.

A few of the best foods to try in the Galapagos Islands include:

  • Langostino Encocado – This is lobster cooked in a coconut. The coconut milk, peppers, garlic, onions, orange, lime, and ginger create quite a flavorful dish.
  • Arroz Marinero – This is seafood rice, and it is considered one of the most popular dishes on the islands.
  • Canchalagua Ceviche – This ceviche is made from the canchalagua mollusk. You will mostly find it on the island of San Cristobel.
  • Sopa Marinera – This seafood soup has a creamy peanutty taste that includes lots of vegetables.
  • Seco – This is one of the dishes you will want to order if you do not want seafood. You can choose to have it made with chicken, lamb, beef, or goat.
  • Bolon de Verde – This is a popular breakfast dumpling. They are made by mixing meat and cheese together and putting it inside mashed plantains.

Tips for Visiting the Galapagos Islands

There are a few tips in this travel guide you must be aware of when planning a visit to the Galapagos Islands.

  • You must have your vacation in the Galapagos Islands booked in advance. Only a certain amount of people are allowed on the islands at a time. Therefore, booking ahead is the only way you are guaranteed to be able to visit when you want.
  • Bring a reusable water bottle – This will allow you to drink lots of water without creating a lot of waste.
  • Stay at least 2 meters from all wildlife you encounter on the islands.
  • The sun is strong in the Galapagos Islands. Always wear sunscreen and a hat.
  • Internet access is limited. Be prepared for limited access during your visit.

This is a lot of what you should know prior to planning a family vacation in the Galapagos Islands. There are other things as well, but I can share them with you while I plan your incredible vacation.

There are two types of turtles in the Galapagos. One is the land turtle. That turtle is slower than slow when it moves. The other turtle is a sea turtle. The sea turtles in the Galapagos are quite graceful as they swim and flip over in the shimmering water of the ocean. They also move rather quickly. While you may not be impressed with the land turtles, the sea turtles in the Galapagos will have you wanting to get closer every time you see one. Therefore, you must take the time to swim with sea turtles in the Galapagos. In fact, I think it is one of the best options for your next family vacation!

Swim with Sea Turtles in the Galapagos

The native animals in the Galapagos are not afraid of humans. For some reason, they have no fear at all. You must be careful when you are near them. It is common to step without looking and squish an unsuspecting creature.

When you are out in the water, the sea turtles in the Galapagos can be seen everywhere. This is what makes it possible to swim with sea turtles when you are on a family vacation in the Galapagos.

The sea turtles in the Galapagos can swim deep in the water. But they love to get warm up near the surface when the sun is out. That is why during the day, you will find them within a few feet of the water’s surface. This is the perfect time to swim with sea turtles because you can get really close to them.

You can swim with the sea turtles in the Galapagos on your own. But if you want the best experience, I recommend taking one of the many tours that are offered. If you are not a fan of swimming, I can always arrange for a kayaking tour amongst all the sea turtles in the Galapagos. And if you want more than swimming, we can set up a snorkeling adventure for your family vacation. The possibilities are almost endless when it comes to spending time with sea turtles.

The Charles Darwin Research Station

When you are not out swimming in the water with the sea turtles in the Galapagos, you should spend a little time exploring the Charles Darwin Research Station. You can learn so much about the native wildlife and marine life there. It will only enhance your entire Galapagos sea turtle experience and give you the perfect family vacation!

Let me know when you are ready to pack your bags and head off to a bucket list destination! The Galapagos are waiting for you, and so are the sea turtles that swim in the waters there! I can plan your family vacation and make sure everyone has something they love to do included. This will ensure fewer eye rolls and groans and more fun and magical memories. You will appreciate those memories when your kids are all grown and have families of their own.

So, are you ready to plan a family vacation in the Galapagos to swim with the turtles?

If you said yes, I would like to invite you to schedule a planning session with me by clicking here. When you click on this link, you will be taken directly to my digital calendar to schedule a time that is convenient for you.

And if you are not quite ready to swim with the turtles during a family vacation in the Galapagos, you can sign up for my newsletter here. This will ensure you always receive all the travel information I share.

The beauty of Kauai is so extraordinary you cannot replicate it anywhere else in the world. Yes, you can come close to certain sights in many destinations. But when you add all the gorgeous sights together on this island, no other destination has the sheer volume of beauty as Kauai. In fact, it is the rushing waterfalls, lush vegetation, looming mountains, and jaw-dropping canyons that bring travelers like yourself to this island year after year. And once you consider all the outdoor family adventures, cultures and traditions, and delicious foods, you may find yourself never wanting to leave this piece of paradise to return home. Especially once you are experiencing the best things to do on Kauai!

Best Things to Do in Kauai During Your Next Family Vacation

Explore Waimea Canyon

Waimea Canyon has long been called the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. Volcanic flow created this massive canyon over the years. Its size is currently ten miles long and two miles wide. Add the thirty-six hundred feet of depth and it stands out from the rest of the scenery on the island of Kauai. There are two ways to see Waimea Canyon from the ground. The first is by car. It is the easiest way to see the entire canyon, since you can stop at multiple lookouts during your drive. The second option is to take one of the numerous hiking trails and walk. Some of the hiking trails are easy, while others are quite challenging. I recommend starting with the Cliff Trail Lookout and the Waipo’o Falls Trail.

Ride an ATV at Kipu Ranch

Kipu Ranch is currently a working ranch with three thousand acres. While this ranch has been mainly a cattle ranch, for some time, it was used to grow sugarcane. There is no other way to explore this land that the Hawaiian monarchy once owned except by ATV. You must be with a tour guide during your visit to explore this ranch. The number of people allowed to visit the ranch each day is limited. However, if you plan ahead, you can learn about the history of this land, as well as all the movies filmed on the property. A couple of the most popular movies include Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Descendants, and The Lost World.

Experience Hawaii’s Ambiance at Kilohana Plantation

Do you have a long list of things to do while vacationing on the island of Kauai? Most likely, you do, and some of the things you want to do include hiking in a rainforest, riding a historic train, and attending a luau. Well, at Kilohana Plantation, you can do all those things and so much more!

You will want to have your day planned out prior to arriving at this plantation. If you don’t, it will be too easy to miss out on some of the activities. It is best to hike through the rainforest before enjoying a meal at the restaurant and tasting some island-made rum. Afterward, you can hop on the Kauai Plantation Railway for a two-and-a-half-mile train ride.

At the end of the day, you must attend the Luau Kalamaku. This is the best luau on the island. Since the show is performed in a circle, there are no bad seats. During the performance, you can watch fifty dancers and musicians show off their talents. While they are all amazing, I recommend you pay close attention to the fire knife dancer.

Relax on the Beach

There are forty-three beaches on the island of Kauai. You can easily visit any of them during your stay and have a fabulous time. However, if you are looking for something specific within a beach, I have a couple of recommendations. Po’ipu Beach is perfect for families who want to swim, snorkel, and see turtles sunbathing on the sand. Salt Pond Beach Park is another family-friendly beach. It is all about the water sports over at Kalapaki Beach, though. If you want to learn how to surf or do a little wave riding or simply want to swim, canoe or sail, Kalapaki Beach is the spot for your family!

Check Out the Lighthouse and Animals at Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge

Gorgeous views, an abundance of wildlife, and the Kilauea Lighthouse are all waiting for you at the Kilauea National Wildlife Refuge. While the kids probably won’t be thrilled with a lighthouse constructed back in 1913, they will love the wide-open spaces for wandering around. Plus, the wildlife makes it an adventure! During your visit, you can potentially see the endangered Hawaiian goose, Hawaiian seabirds, Hawaiian monk seals, and green turtles. And if you plan your visit for the winter months, the humpback whales will be in the nearby water too.

Take a Helicopter Tour of the Island of Kauai

If you are looking to see the island of Kauai from a different perspective, it is best to sign up for a helicopter tour. These tours are one of the best ways to see the waterfalls, Waimea Canyon, and the spectacular Napali Coast.

Go Hiking in Koke’e State Park

The very best hiking trails in Kauai can be found in Koke’e State Park. The most popular hiking trail is the Awa’awaphui Trail. This is a six-mile trail that offers gorgeous views of the Napali Coast once you reach the overlook. The Nua’lolo Trail is another fantastic hiking trail in Koke’e State Park. It is approximately seven and a half miles long and is challenging. You can tackle both trails in one day by doing the full loop. However, make sure you leave early enough in the day because it is a true daylong hike.

Cruise the Napali Coast

Another unique way to see the island of Kauai, especially the Napali Coast, is via boat. I can help you find a boat tour that is perfect for your family. Whether you want to snorkel, kayak, or simply take a scenic cruise, there is a boat tour along the Napali Coast for you!

Grab a Selfie with Wailua Falls

There may be multiple waterfalls on the island of Kauai, but not many of them are easily accessible. You can actually drive to Wailua Falls. Make sure you take your camera with you, though, because you won’t want to miss out on having pictures of this majestic place.

Watch the Water Shoot Up at the Spouting Horn Blowhole

Kids of all ages will love watching the water shoot up from the ground at the Spouting Horn Blowhole. This blowhole is similar to a geyser and is just as unpredictable. You never know when the water will erupt into the air, so you may need to wait patiently at the viewpoint for a little bit.

These are only a few of the best things to do in Kauai during your next family vacation. I have so many other ideas I can share with you as we are planning your Kauai itinerary.

So, are you ready to plan your next family vacation in Kauai?
