History in Vermont

Family Vacation in Vermont? Use My Travel Guide - Ben and Jerry's in Waterbury, Vermont

The French and British both settled in the state of Vermont back in the early 18th century. Most people are not aware that this state declared its independence from the other thirteen colonies. Vermont was admitted to the Union many years later in 1790. This is when it became the 14th state.

Vermont earned the nickname, Green Mountain State, thanks to all its mountains covered with lush green trees. History is everywhere in this state. Almost everyone knows that this is where Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream was created, and that more maple syrup is made in the state than anywhere else.

However, did you know one of the first ski lifts was developed in Vermont? A farm in Woodstock created the very first ski lift back in 1934. An old Model-T Ford engine powered the ski lift.

You also may not know that the state capital, Montpelier, is the smallest state capital out of all the state capitals.

The littlest known historical fact I could find for the state of Vermont was something I had never thought of before. Back when Social Security checks were first issued, the very first recipient was Ida May Fuller of Ludlow. She retired from her legal secretary job and received her first Social Security check on January 31, 1940.

Weather in Vermont

There are four very distinct seasons in the state of Vermont. However, winter is the longest season, and it often decides that it wants to hang on so much longer than it should. If you love the cold and the snow, the Vermont winters are definitely going to be for you! And if you don’t love the snow, then you will want to take your vacation in Vermont during one of the other shorter seasons.

Spring in Vermont

Spring in Vermont normally begins around the month of April when temperatures begin to soar into the upper 40s and low 50s. Snow is still common during the spring months. I recommend being prepared for any weather during your visit. By the time May comes around, the snow should be mostly gone, except higher up in the mountains. The sun will be out more, and you may actually feel like you can walk around without freezing.

Summer in Vermont

Everything comes to life in Vermont during the summer months, because the sun is shining, the birds are singing, and temperatures are in the 70s and 80s. It can rain quite a bit in the summer. So, be prepared for a storm or two during your visit.

Fall in Vermont

Fall brings a crispness to the air in Vermont. This is when the temperatures start dropping quickly. However, you will be rewarded with the leaves changing colors under the sun that remains. This is the perfect time of the year to spend outside, exploring everything Vermont has to offer. I recommend dressing for the weather anytime you walk out the door.

Winter in Vermont

Family Vacation in Vermont? Use My Travel Guide - Skiing in Vermont

Winter arrives early in Vermont. It is common for the first snowfall to occur during the month of October. However, it will only be a small amount. You have until November before this area truly gets dumped on. The mid-40s in November will quickly turn to 30s in December and the 20s in January. This is the time of the year when most of the locals stay inside unless they are out taking advantage of all the fresh snowfall.

These are the best ski resorts in New England for your next family ski vacation.

What to Pack for a Family Vacation in Vermont

Packing for a family vacation in Vermont is easy, as long as you keep the season you are visiting in mind. The summer months are fine for bringing shorts, t-shirts, and sundresses. However, there can be some cool days and nights, especially in the mountains. Therefore, a couple pairs of pants and sweatshirts can be helpful.

Rain gear is a must throughout the year, while winter coats and boots can be a good idea for the months of October through May. Layers are also a plus during the spring and fall when the days start out cool before warming up and cooling down again.

If you plan on spending a lot of time outside, hiking boots and bug spray must go in your suitcase.

Vermonters aren’t fancy, so you can leave the evening gowns and high heels back at home.

Activities to Embrace While on Vacation in Vermont

As you are choosing activities to do with your family in Vermont, you are going to discover there are more options than what you have time for! This isn’t always a bad thing, because it allows you to choose the activities that are most important for your family.

There are quite a few hiking trails through the mountains in Vermont. Therefore, hiking must be on your list of things to do with your family. If you don’t hike too often, no worries. There are many easy trails that are not too long.

Hiking isn’t the only way to experience the great outdoors in Vermont. You can also choose to bike along some of those trails or the other bike paths in the state.

I know there aren’t too many beaches in the state of Vermont. But that shouldn’t stop you from doing some of the many watersports that are available in all the bodies of water! You will discover that Vermont has quite a few lakes and rivers. You can kayak or canoe in those rivers or lakes. There are even a few white-water courses if you have always wanted to try white water rafting.

Other family activities you can try while vacationing in Vermont include:

  • Build Your Own Bear at the Vermont Teddy Bear Factory
  • Take a Scenic Train Ride with Green Mountain Railroad
  • Go Apple Picking
  • Shop the Farmer’s Markets
  • Take a Cruise on Lake Champlain
  • Check Out the Rodeo

Check out these other activities to add to your itinerary for your family vacation in Vermont.

Top Places to See in Vermont for Your Vacation

Family Vacation in Vermont? Use My Travel Guide - Emily's Bridge Covered Bridge in Vermont

It is going to be quite difficult to determine what attractions should be on your list in Vermont. After all, this is a large state, and you could find yourself interested in a few places quite a distance apart. That’s okay though because I am here to make sure your family vacation in Vermont goes off without a hitch!

Ice cream lovers will want the Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Factory at the top of their list of places to see on a family vacation in Vermont. Take a tour to learn how this ice cream brand was created. During the tour, look down at the factory floor to watch the flavors of the day being made. At the end, you can taste a sample of whatever flavors just came off the factory line. Before you leave, you must check out the flavor graveyard. That is where retired flavors are sent to be remembered forever.

Another must-see on your list might be the President Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site. This site is where his boyhood home is located. A tour of the home and the other estate buildings can help you understand this President a little more. Another presidential attraction in Vermont is Hildene, the Lincoln Family Home. This was the summer home for President Lincoln and his family. Tours of the mansion are best to see the Lincoln belongings and furniture. Your favorite spot though might be out in the gardens, where you can see gorgeous views of the Battenkill Valley.

Other amazing places to see in Vermont include:

  • Robert Frost Stone House
  • Tallest Filing Cabinet on Earth (just outside Burlington)
  • Shelburne Museum
  • VINS Nature Center and Quechee Gorge
  • Cabot Creamery
  • Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park
  • Multiple Covered Bridges – The Silk Road Bridge is one of the best

Amazing Festivals You Can’t Miss in Vermont

Burke Fall Foliage Festival

By now, you should know that fall is one of the best times to visit Vermont, because of the beautiful fall foliage. The Burke Fall Foliage Festival is on the last Saturday of September. This festival is a day-long event of fun events and adventures. Your day will begin with you watching the parade. Afterwards, you can shop for arts and crafts items, participate in Cow Flop Bingo, and watch the Rubber Duck Races. You won’t want to miss the BBQ, silent auction, and live music either!

Vermont Golden Honey Festival

Vermont is known for producing maple syrup. But they are also good at making honey. Imagine walking around this festival and having the chance to purchase products related to bees. There’s honey apple pizza, beeswax lip balms, honeybee print fabrics, and beeswax soaps. The Vermont Golden Honey Festival is on the second Saturday in September.

Vermont Dairy Festival

The Vermont Dairy Festival is a 4-day event during the month of June. All the action begins on Thursday night and ends late in the afternoon on Sunday. Your time at this festival will include midway rides, food, live music, parades, performances, and fireworks.

The Big Island of Hawaii is the largest of all the Hawaiian Islands. This is why so many people choose the island for their Hawaiian family vacation. If you happen to know this Hawaiian Island is perfect for your family, or you are simply starting with this island, you must know a few things before planning your family adventures! I happen to love the Big Island of Hawaii. Therefore, I wanted to share some tips that will make your time there better than you could ever imagine!

Big Island of Hawaii Travel Guide for Your Family Vacation

History on the Big Island of Hawaii

Big Island of Hawaii Travel Guide for Your Family Vacation - Hawaiian Culture

A Polynesian navigator, Hawai’iloa, discovered the Big Island of Hawaii. At least according to one of the many legends. Another legend shares this island used to be the realm of Hawaiki and was where people went in their afterlife.

However, this island was actually discovered by explorers from the Marquesas Islands. Those Polynesian explorers brought their cultures and traditions over to this island, and you can still experience them today.

The oldest section of the Big Island is the North Kohala Peninsula. If you want to see the most history during your vacation, I recommend spending a little time here.

Weather on the Big Island of Hawaii

You may be shocked to discover that there are really only two seasons on the Big Island of Hawaii! Then again, you might not be, because you know the weather in Hawaii is always amazing!

Summer in Hawaii

The months of May through October is summer on the Big Island of Hawaii. These months are quite dry. The temperatures average around 85 to 90 degrees during the day.

Winter in Hawaii

The temperatures do not drop much during the winter months in Hawaii. The months of November through April have temperatures between 79 and 83 degrees. The only major difference you will see weather-wise during these months is there will be much more rain. Some areas of the island get more rain than others, and the sun is almost always shining somewhere. Therefore, if you simply switch your plans a little for the day, you can avoid the rain altogether!

Best Time to Vacation on the Big Island of Hawaii

There really isn’t a “best” time to vacation in Hawaii. However, if you want to avoid the rain, I recommend visiting during the summer months. The middle of June through the end of August is the peak season. As is the middle of December through the middle of March. If you want to avoid an influx of people and higher prices, you may want to avoid those times.

Since this is your family vacation, you may want to choose to visit when there is the most daylight, so you can accomplish everything on your must-do list. The days in June have two and a half more hours of daylight than the days in December. I recommend keeping this in mind if you know your family will be active from sunup to sun-down.

What to Pack for a Family Vacation in Hawaii

Clothing items for warm weather is a must when packing for a family vacation in Hawaii. However, I recommend being prepared for the rain. Pack a raincoat or an umbrella. And if you know you will be going up to the mountainous regions, a warm jacket and even gloves and a hat will be helpful. After all, there can be snow up in the mountains, and it gets cold as you reach those higher elevations.

Places to Stay While on a Hawaiian Vacation with Family

You may not have as many unique accommodation options when you take a family vacation on the Big Island of Hawaii. However, you can still choose from an Airbnb, hotel, resort, and a select few bed and breakfasts. While every family has their own personal needs for vacations, I have discovered the resorts in Hawaii usually offer the best value and amenities. We can discuss your family’s personal vacation accommodation requirements, so we can determine the best accommodations for your Hawaiian vacation.

Foods You Must Try While on Vacation in Hawaii

Big Island of Hawaii Travel Guide for Your Family Vacation - Hawaiian Traditional Plate Lunch with Ahi Poke

Soft, sandy beaches, warm ocean water, and thrilling adventures are always the main reasons why people vacation in Hawaii. However, it may be the local foods that make you want to return to this gorgeous island in the future!

Main Foods

  • Poke – Diced raw ahi tuna is used to make this popular Hawaiian dish. It is served with rice and multiple sauces. There are many different variations though, so you can often find it made with other types of raw fish.
  • Acai Bowls – The warmer days of the year are perfect for acai bowls. But honestly, you can eat these fruity bowls whenever you would like! These smoothie bowls are made with acai berries, granola, other types of fruit, and numerous toppings. You can basically build the acai bowl of your dreams!
  • Loco Moco – Loco moco is a bowl of rice topped with a burger and gravy.
  • Kona Coffee – Okay, so Kona coffee is not a food, but it is a must-try drink when you are vacationing in Hawaii. The coffee beans for Kona coffee are grown in the Kona region of the Big Island. For the best experience, make sure you are getting 100% Kona coffee. The blends are only required to have 10% Kona coffee in them. Kona coffee is expensive, but it is worth the money from the very first sip!
  • Furikake Chicken – Fried chicken is always delicious. Especially on the Big Island of Hawaii. I recommend trying the fried chicken that is coated with furikake seasoning. This seasoning is made with dried seaweed, bonito flakes, and sesame seeds.
  • Spam Musubi – One of the most popular snacks in Hawaii is Spam Musubi. In fact, the locals in Hawaii eat the most Spam in the world! A slice of Spam is placed on top of a block of rice before being wrapped with Nori.

Desserts

  • Shave Ice – If nothing else on this list of must-try foods in Hawaii sounds appealing, the shave ice will be something your family will love to eat! Fluffy, shaved ice is placed in a bowl. You get to cover it with a fruity syrup of your choice. This is the perfect treat on a nice hot day in Hawaii!
  • Malasadas – The must-try donut in Hawaii is the Malasadas. This fried treat does not look like a traditional donut with a hole in the middle. It has a doughy center. Or it is filled with delightful ingredients like coconut. Malasadas are served warm and coated with granulated sugar.

Activities to Embrace While on Vacation in Hawaii

As a family, you will all enjoy doing a little manta ray diving over near Kona. And as the day turns into night, you can all venture over to Mauna Kea for some of the best stargazing views in the world. However, those aren’t the only popular activities on the Big Island. I also recommend considering adding the following activities to your Hawaii family vacation itinerary:

  • ATV Riding
  • Wandering Through the Rainforests
  • Hiking
  • Golfing
  • Horseback Riding
  • Soaking in a Hot Spring
  • Surfing
  • Whale Watching
  • Ziplining over the Jungles, Rainforests, and Ravines

Top Places to See While on Vacation on the Big Island of Hawaii

Hawaii may be an island, but that doesn’t mean you will find yourself lacking in things to do during your vacation. Instead, you will find yourself in agony. Mainly because you won’t be able to fit everything on your must-do list in your itinerary! While you will have your own preferences, I guarantee you won’t want to leave these three top places off your list.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

There are two active volcanoes within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. However, Kilauea is a must-see volcano. It stands at four thousand feet tall, and while it hasn’t been erupting in recent months, it is a volcano that bears watching. If you are lucky, you may capture a glimpse of lava flow during your visit. And if you don’t get to see lava, at least you can see the volcano up close as you hike the nearby trails. Plus, you can venture to the summit of Mauna Kea for the views or do a little stargazing.

Akaka Falls State Park

Big Island of Hawaii Travel Guide for Your Family Vacation - Akaka Falls State Park

If your family loves waterfalls and you want to check two off your list quickly, I recommend heading over to Akaka Falls State Park. The trail leading to the waterfalls is flat and paved, making it easy to navigate by even the smallest children. Plus, the trail is not long, and you can easily walk it in 30 minutes or less. While the views from the trail are amazing, the highlight will be when you arrive at Kahuna Falls and then Akaka Falls.

Hilo Farmers Market

When you are hungry, thirsty, and in the mood for a little shopping, you must venture over to the Hilo Farmers Market. This farmer’s market is open daily. It is the best place to grab a bite to eat while shopping at the same time. If you are looking for the most variety, I recommend visiting on a Wednesday or Saturday. This is when most vendors are there. This is when you will find some of the most unique items like jaboticaba fruit and bongo drums. It is also best to use caution when making purchases. Like everywhere else, you will have some fake items offered as local souvenirs.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Family Vacation on the Big Island of Hawaii

There are always going to be tips you must know before traveling to any destination around the world. My top tips for getting the most out of your family vacation on the Big Island of Hawaii include:

  • Choose Your Accommodations Wisely – Together, we will find the perfect accommodations for your family.
  • Rental Cars are a Must – You may not choose to rent on a car on most family vacations you take, but you must when you are visiting the Big Island of Hawaii. If you don’t, you will find yourself without any options for getting to the destinations you want to see the most.
  • Plan a Luau Towards the End of Your Trip – The time change can be really daunting for some families. Since the luaus end really late, you may not be ready to stay up that long towards the beginning of your trip.
  • Purchase Reef Safe Sunscreen – Skip packing the sunscreen in your suitcase and purchase the reef-safe version when you arrive. The coral reefs and marine life will thank you!
  • Always Check the Weather Before Heading Out for the Day – When you check the weather in the morning, you can avoid mishaps like hiking in the rain and so much more. Most Hawaiian itineraries can have their days or times swapped if you do happen to encounter a rainstorm during your visit.

This travel guide should have you understand everything you need to know to have a fabulous family vacation on the Big Island of Hawaii! And if you have any questions, I can share the answers with you, as I am booking your Hawaiian vacation for you!

I can’t share everything with you, because that would have you reading for hours. So, I’m sharing the highlights now and can answer any other questions you may have as I am planning your personalized family vacation itinerary.

Plan Your Family Vacation in Iceland with My Travel Guide

History in Iceland

The history in Iceland is vast. Let’s begin with how this country formed about seventy million years ago. A magma pocket is located directly below this island. That pocket is called the Iceland Plume. Underwater eruptions created Iceland.

This country is also part of the Mid-Atlantic Rift. All that geothermal activity is why Iceland has more than two hundred volcanoes, geysers, and volcanic fissures.

It was back when the Book of Settlements, or Landnamabok, was written that the first people settled in Iceland. This occurred during the 9th and 10th centuries. Detailed information is shared within this book, which is helpful in learning more about how this country has changed over the years.

Irish monks were the first people to settle in Iceland. Yet the name of the country was not given until sailor, Floki Vilgeroarson, saw drifting ice floating in a fjord when he arrived. The first people settling in Iceland lived in traditional Viking longhouses. Then Icelandic turf houses became popular when timber was in short supply.

Many of the locals were killed during the eruption of the Laki Volcano in the 18th century. Livestock was also killed. That led to a famine in the country and other parts of the world.

Iceland finally became independent of Denmark in 1944.

There have been many changes in this country over the centuries. However, one thing that has never changed is the fact that Icelanders are very warm and welcoming to anyone who arrives in the country.

Weather in Iceland

Iceland does have four seasons like we do here in the US. It just always doesn’t seem that way. The weather can be really surprising on a day-to-day basis in this country.

Spring in Iceland

The first day of spring in Iceland arrives in April. It is common to still see snow flying around during the spring here. The average temperature at this time of the year is between thirty- and fifty-degrees Fahrenheit.

The southern parts of the country see more rain during spring, while Northern Iceland is much drier.

Summer in Iceland

The summer months are the most popular time to take a family vacation in Iceland. This season usually begins at the start of June and goes through late August. During this time of the year, you should expect temperatures between forty and seventy-five degrees.

Rain does fall occasionally, and it can be windy. Despite all that, it is the perfect time to visit to attend festivals and see the Midnight Sun.

Fall in Iceland

Fall begins in September and lasts until early November in Iceland. The temperatures fall to the range of where they are in the spring. It feels much colder, especially with the wind and the rain.

The good news is you can experience the changing colors of the leaves, as you explore all bundled up. You may even capture a glimpse of the Northern Lights or the first snowfall of the season.

Winter in Iceland

The rest of the year is considered winter in Iceland. These are the darkest months of the year and sunshine is limited. The temperatures continue to drop during this season. However, the average temperature in the winter is thirty-two degrees. It is the wind chill that makes it seem so much colder.

What to Pack for a Family Vacation in Iceland

What you pack for your family vacation in Iceland will be dependent on a few factors. One of those factors is what you are planning to do while on vacation. Another is the time of year you visit.

However, no matter when you visit, you should be prepared for cooler, or cold, temperatures. Therefore, I recommend packing layers. This will allow you to bundle up early in the morning and later in the day, while removing layers during the warmer parts of the day.

Sturdy boots, raincoats, bathing suits, hats, and sunglasses should be near the top of your list. Waterproof shoes can be helpful during the rainy season. And scarves and gloves will keep you warm when the wind is blowing and making the temperatures feel even colder.

Activities to Embrace While on a Family Vacation in Iceland

Plan Your Family Vacation in Iceland with My Travel Guide - Northern Lights

There are so many things you can do to make memories with your family during a vacation in Iceland. During the winter months, seeing the Northern Lights should be at the top of your list of things to do in Iceland.

I can help you determine where you should see this dancing light show during your family vacation. I usually recommend taking a Northern Lights tour, because the locals know the best areas for viewing. While I can’t guarantee you will see the Northern Lights, I will make sure you have every chance to!

If you have younger children, you may need to have them do something else on the day you want to relax in a geothermal spa. I mean, there is no reason to skip this opportunity while in Iceland! And if your kids are older, they can join in on the fun with you!

There are also plenty of natural hot pools scattered around Iceland. You may have a chance to discover a few, and use them, during your travels.

Whale watching is an excellent family activity in Iceland. Especially if you want to escape the mainland for a few hours and make a few memories together. During a whale watching tour, you will have the chance to see as many as twenty different whale species. You may even spot porpoises and dolphins during this family adventure.

Most of the time, you will see humpback whales and mink whales. However, I have had clients see killer whales while they were out on the water.

Other activities you should embrace during a family vacation in Iceland include:

  • Scuba Diving and Snorkeling
  • Horseback Riding
  • Kayaking
  • Hiking
  • Snowmobiling
  • Ice Caving and Glacier Hiking

Best Places to See in Iceland

As you are planning your family activities in Iceland, you may quickly notice there are so many places to do them all. It can be difficult to narrow down the best places to see in this country.

One of my favorite places to see in Iceland is the Golden Circle. This area used to be called the Golden Triangle. It contains ꝥingvellir National Park, Gullfoss Waterfall, and a Geysir area. Inside the park, you can see the opening between the tectonic plates that separate Europe and North America.

It is best to spend a full day in the Golden Circle. Oh, and you will need to either have your own vehicle to explore or have me arrange a tour for your family.

The Blue Lagoon is one of the attractions in Iceland that almost everyone has heard about. Or it is the first thing they learn about once they decide to vacation there. This gorgeous blue geothermal pool is nice and warm. Simply soak in the geothermal waters or add a silica mud mask for even better results.

Please note that you must make reservations for The Blue Lagoon in advance. This is a popular place, and they book quickly. If this is something you want to do during your family vacation in Iceland, I can make sure it is on your itinerary and tackle the reservations for you.

Plan Your Family Vacation in Iceland with My Travel Guide - Puffins on the Coast of Iceland

Heimaey Island is one of the best places to see puffins while in Iceland. This island is the largest of all the Westman Islands. It is a remote island. Which is why there is a lot of wildlife there. You will even have the chance to see Beluga whales at the whale sanctuary.

You will need to take a ferry to this island. I can easily arrange that as I am personalizing your family vacation itinerary.

Oh, and don’t forget to spend a little time in Reykjavik. This capital city is full of family friendly things to do. You can admire Hallgrimskirkja, which is a church in the city. Explore the natural wonders of the country during a visit to the Perlan Museum. Add in a little shopping and eating the local foods and you won’t regret spending time here.

Other amazing places you should see in Iceland include:

  • Seljalandsfoss Waterfall
  • Raufarhólshellir Lava Tunnel
  • Skaftafell National Park
  • Vatnajökull Glacier
  • Lake Mývatn
  • The Westfjords
  • Grundarfjordur

Must-Attend Festivals in Iceland

There are quite a few festivals held in Iceland every year. Many of them are held during the summer months. However, you will find a few going on during the dark, cold days of winter.

Reykjavik Arts Festival

The Reykjavik Arts Festival is one of the oldest art festivals in Europe. This arts festival is only held every other year during the month of May or June. Art is on display. Plus, you can watch theatrical and dance performances.

Iceland Airwaves Music Festival

This musical festival features national bands and musicians every year. The line up is announced in February, which gives you plenty of time to plan your vacation before the festival in November. The music is performed in different venues around Reykjavik. This is a four-day event, and you can attend every day if you want.

Secret Solstice Music Festival

As you can see, music festivals are popular in Iceland. This popular festival is held around June 21st every year. This is when the midnight sun arrives. There is always one secret headliner for this event. However, you will know all the other popular performers well in advance. This is another music festival that lasts for four days.

Tips for Your Family Vacation in Iceland

I can’t end my travel guide for Iceland until I have shared some of my most important tips for visiting this country. These tips are designed to ensure your family vacation in Iceland is as incredible, and memorable, as it should be.

  • Always get to know the locals. They are quite friendly and always willing to share their favorite parts of the country.
  • Never purchase beer in the supermarket. You may not be aware that it was illegal to drink beer in this country for a good part of the 20th century. So, they are a little behind on the times. Beer in the grocery store has the same taste, but there is barely any alcohol in it. When looking for beer, head to Vinbudin, or The Wine Store. That’s where the good stuff is sold.
  • If you are visiting during the summer, take advantage of the Midnight Sun and stay out late exploring.
  • Always be prepared for the changing weather. Make sure you dress in layers and expect the unexpected as you are out exploring.

This is a lot of what you should know if you are considering a family vacation in Iceland. I can share more information with you as I am planning your family trip. I can also tell you that no matter where you go, or what you do here, you will make tons of memories with your family.

One of the most beautiful countries in the world is Norway. This country offers gorgeous landscapes, thrilling family adventures, and plenty of cultures. Add in delicious cuisine, lively festivals, and architectural features, and you have a destination everyone in your family will love. Before you start planning your family vacation in Norway, there are a few things you should know. That is why I am sharing my travel guide to Norway with you today.

My Travel Guide to Norway

History of Norway

The history of Norway begins long before the Viking Age. All the way back to 10000 BCE, people arrived in this area to hunt and fish. They continued to settle along the icy coastline while moving inland a little to farm.

Once the Viking Age began, there was a battle with Britain over who owned the land. Some people were even expelled from Norway. Those people moved to Greenland in hopes of a better life.

Norway finally received full independence in 1905. This country has had many other changes over the years. Now in the 21st century, history is still happening. One of the most exciting things is people can now hold dual citizenship while living in Norway. This may be helpful if your family falls in love with this destination during your family vacation.

Weather in Norway

Spring in Norway

Spring usually begins during the month of May in Norway. The sun is normally shining at this time of the year. The temperatures start to climb too. However, don’t expect it to be too warm during a family vacation in Norway during the spring. And since the snow is melting, it will be wet and muddy.

Summer in Norway

The temperatures in Norway reach the upper 60s and low 70s during the summer. There are days when it will reach 80 degrees. So be prepared for warmer days on occasion. It will never get too hot in some regions of Norway. It is always best to check the weather of where you will be staying prior to packing.

Fall in Norway

The weather starts to get cooler during the fall. You may still see some warmer days, but they are few and far between.

Winter in Norway

The winter months can be bitterly cold in Norway. The temperatures usually fall well below freezing and stay there all day long. Snow will fall regularly too. Winter also brings really dark, long days here. Keep that in mind while planning your family vacation.

My Travel Guide to Norway - Warm Clothes

What to Pack for a Family Vacation in Norway

Packing for a family vacation in Norway can be challenging, depending on when you are visiting. Your family can usually wear T-shirts and shorts or pants during the day in the summer. Yet at night, you will need a sweater or light jacket to keep warm.

Spring and fall months will require layers, as well as a raincoat and boots. During early spring or late fall, you may need even warmer clothes for your family trip.

Heavy jackets, scarves, hats, and gloves are a must during the winter in Norway. This is especially true if your family plans on spending a lot of time outdoors. It is best to pack multiple layers for each day, so you can dress accordingly. I actually recommend wool clothing when visiting Norway during the winter because it will keep you the warmest.

My travel guide to Norway doesn’t cover everything you should pack for your family vacation. Everyone has their own needs and wants while traveling, so simply use this as a guide and pack what you know your family will need!

Activities to Embrace While on a Family Vacation in Norway

My Travel Guide to Norway - Cable Car

One of the best ways to explore Norway is by hiking the local trails. This is an excellent activity to get your family outside. Plus, you get to see some of the gorgeous landscapes throughout this country.

Another option is to rent bicycles and ride your way through the countryside. This might be good if you want to see a few more places during your family vacation.

During the winter months, you can head to the nearest ski slopes. And yet, during the warmer months of the year, you can go surfing or rafting or do a little kayaking on a river.

One of the favorite activities in Norway, though, is checking out the Northern Lights or seeing the Midnight Sun. The Northern Lights can normally be seen in Norway between late September and late March. As for the Midnight Sun, this natural phenomenon occurs during the summer.

Other activities to embrace while on a family vacation in Norway include:

  • Fishing
  • Birdwatching
  • Wildlife Safari
  • Train Ride
  • Ferry Ride
  • Scenic Drive
  • Cable Car Ride

Top Places to See While on a Family Vacation in Norway

There are just as many fabulous places to see while on a family vacation in Norway. The Polar Museum should be at the top of your list. This museum is within a former warehouse that was constructed back in 1837. Inside the museum, you will see galleries filled with the history of the Arctic expeditions.

Other intriguing museums include the Ibsen Museum, the Viking Ship Museum, and the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History.

Over at Vigeland Sculpture Park, your family can wander around to see more than two hundred sculptures created by Gustav Vigeland. These sculptures are all made from granite and bronze. There are several sections within this park. I recommend walking through each section completely before heading to the next.

Visiting Oslo Cathedral should also be at the top of your list during a family vacation in Norway. This baroque church was the first church to be established in the country. While inside, you should pay close attention to the large organ, as well as to the colorful murals on the ceiling.

My Travel Guide to Norway - Arctic Cathedral

Other top places to see while in Norway include:

  • Geirangerfjord Region
  • Arctic Cathedral
  • Akershus Castle
  • Village of Geiranger
  • Oslo City Hall
  • Tromso Fjords

There are many other things to do in Norway, so don’t think you need only to include what is in my travel guide.

Amazing Festivals to Attend in Norway

You will find plenty of festivals to attend during your Norway family vacation if you plan your trip right. I can’t possibly share all the different festivals in my travel guide to Norway. However, I am going to share the best ones.

Oya Festival

The Oya Festival is considered one of the biggest music festivals in Norway. This festival was first held in Oslo in 1999. Since then, it has continued to grow while featuring popular musicians over the course of four days.

Riddu Riddu

The Riddu Riddu Festival began back in 1991 as a way to protect and share the Sami culture with others. This festival is normally held during the month of July in Northern Troms.

Saint Lucia’s Day

Saint Lucia’s Day is held on December 13th to celebrate the festival of light. This is the arrival of Christmas and is considered a major Christmas feast day. Girls will dress up as Saint Lucia, as they sing songs and carry lights.

Tips for a Fabulous Family Vacation in Norway

I find it is always helpful to be aware of certain things before going on vacation anywhere. Especially when you are traveling with your family. There are a few tips you need to know in order to have a fabulous family vacation in Norway. Those tips include:

  • Renting a car is usually a must when on vacation in Norway. Public transportation can be slow and unreliable.
  • Book accommodations, transportation, and activities well in advance. Norway is a country that fills up quickly with travelers, especially at certain times of the year.
  • Credit cards are used instead of cash in Norway. Keep that in mind, so you have a credit card that won’t charge you fees every time you use it. You should also alert your credit card company that you are traveling so they don’t flag your account as possibly being used fraudulently.
  • Pack the appropriate clothes and remember layers so you don’t freeze during your stay. If you have teenagers that love packing their own clothes without listening to your advice, either throw a few things in your suitcase for them or be prepared to make a few purchases upon your arrival. After all, we all know how teenagers are when it comes to dressing for the weather!
  • Always buy the chocolate. Norwegian chocolate is the best! Buy extra to take home with you. Like, by the case, so you don’t run out too quickly!

Now that you have read my travel guide to Norway, you know many of the things you should be aware of for your family vacation. Yes, there are other things you may need to be aware of, but we can cover those as I am creating your personalized family vacation itinerary. I always make sure my clients have everything they need before heading to a new destination for a family trip.

So, are you ready to have me personalize a family vacation itinerary for your next trip?

If you said yes, I would like to invite you to click here to schedule a family vacation itinerary planning session with me. When you click this link, you will be taken directly to my digital calendar to schedule a time that is convenient for you.

Oregon is a state most people visit when they can’t decide between a relaxing vacation at the shoreline and an adventurous vacation out in the middle of a massive park. Since this gorgeous state is filled with shorelines, forests, deserts, glaciers, and volcanoes, you can easily enjoy it all during your next family vacation. Your vacation in Oregon can be spent embracing the outdoors while indulging in delectable cuisine and relaxing whenever you want to. And I can’t think of a better place to spend time with the people you love most in the world!

Plan Your Family Vacation in Oregon with My Travel Guide

History in Oregon

Some of the first settlers arrived in Oregon during the 17th and 18th centuries. However, it was Lewis and Clark that put this state on the map when they ventured out to discover the Northwest Passage. They created the Oregon Trail. This trail was one of the most popular trails in the country. Groups of people traveled along this trail over the years. However, approximately 12,000 people traveled from Missouri to Oregon on this trail, which was 2,000 miles long. They were looking for new land and a better life.

Oregon is known as the Beaver State, but there was a time during the middle of the 19th century when beavers were almost extinct. The reason was that so many people were trapping these creatures to make coats and hats from the beaver hides. Thankfully, a group stepped in to manage the hunting of beavers, and this animal is now a prominent feature in the state once again.

When it comes to food, the state of Oregon really knows how to do things right. There are more than 300 wineries in Oregon. Chances are you have already had some delicious wine made in this state. If you eat hazelnuts, you will be happy to know that Oregon produces approximately 99% of the hazelnuts in this country too.

The other food item you may be curious about is the maraschino cherry. Back in the early 1900s, cherries were spoiling before people could eat them. Ernest Wiegand, a professor at Oregon State University, created the maraschino cherry, so no cherry would ever get rotten ever again. So, next time you go to eat a hot fudge sundae, thank Mr. Wiegand for his dedication to the cherry!

The last thing you may not know about Oregon is it grows the most Christmas trees in the country. A decade ago, Oregon had almost five million Christmas trees to send throughout the country. That number is most likely even higher now!

Weather in Oregon

Spring in Oregon

The winters in Oregon may be mild, but that doesn’t mean you won’t want to see the shining sun when spring finally arrives. While the temperatures begin to rise a little during these months, you will be most appreciative that the rain finally slows down in the spring.

Summer in Oregon

While the temperatures warm up in Oregon during the summer months, it never truly gets really hot. Therefore, you can easily spend time outside without sweating buckets. The best part about the summer months though is the bright sun and the fact that it hardly ever rains.

Fall in Oregon

The fall months in Oregon can be a little unpredictable unless you are talking about the rain. This is the time of the year when the rain starts back up. However, it is also when you can have warm temperatures one day and cold temperatures the next. If you are looking for good news when it comes to the weather in Oregon during the fall, it would be the fact the rain is more of a drizzle than a downpour!

Winter in Oregon

It does get cold in Oregon during the winter, but the temperatures rarely reach freezing or below. Therefore, all the precipitation normally comes down in the form of rain instead of snow. The upside to winters in Oregon is you won’t freeze as you do in many other parts of the country.

What to Pack for a Vacation in Oregon

Packing for a family vacation in Oregon is kind of like packing for the unexpected. Unless you are planning to visit Oregon in the middle of summer, you will need to be prepared for cool and warm temperatures. This means packing shorts, t-shirts, sundresses, pants, sweaters, and sweatshirts. A light jacket is also a must unless you are visiting during the winter.

Layers are necessary for Oregon and the rest of the Pacific Northwest. You will find yourself removing layers throughout the day and putting them back on later in the evening. In months like December and January, you will want to add winter coats, hats, gloves, and scarves to your packing list. Winter boots can be helpful to keep your feet warm, but make sure they are waterproof.

An umbrella should always go into your suitcase when traveling to Oregon. Although a raincoat can keep you dry without the hassle of holding an umbrella all day long.

Activities to Embrace While on Vacation in Oregon

Family Vacation in Oregon - White Water Rafting

If your family loves spending time outside, you must plan a few hikes during your family vacation in Oregon. There are so many trails to choose from. And when you are finished hiking for the day, you can always jump into a body of water to go for a swim.

Additional relaxation might be necessary on some days when you are in Oregon. If you happen to require a quiet space to wander around and enjoy a picnic lunch, there are many to choose from. You may even discover the smallest park in the world during your days off the beaten path.

There are not many hauntings in Oregon, but your family can spend the day, or night, checking out the Witch’s House. You will find this house over in Forest Park. Spirits are said to haunt the home, so you will want to keep your eyes and ears open throughout your visit.

Do you have an avid reader or two in your family? If you do, wandering around Powell’s City of Books must be at the top of your list of family activities! This bookstore covers an entire block in Portland and is several floors high. I recommend grabbing a map before venturing too far into this bookstore because it is so easy to get lost amongst the stacks of books.

Additional activities to do as a family while on vacation in Oregon include:

  • Watch a movie at the drive-ins
  • Go whitewater rafting
  • Fishing
  • Explore the seaside towns
  • Wander around tide pools
  • Take a scenic drive
  • Go horseback riding on the beach

Top Places to See in Oregon

When it comes to places to see in Oregon during your family vacation, there are two destinations clamoring for the number one spot. Crater Lake National Park is the first option. This park is full of hiking trails, the crater, and a scenic drive around the rim of the crater. The Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area is the other option that must be close to the top of your list. This destination is known for its waterfalls, hiking and biking trails, and scenic drive along the Historic Columbia River Highway.

Only you will know which destination must be at the top of your list, but we can figure that out as we plan your family vacation in Oregon.

Beach days must be spent over at Cannon Beach. Whether you are swimming in the water or relaxing on the sand, you can look up to Haystack Rock. There are many restaurants and boutiques near this beach. However, you may be more intrigued by Ecola State Park and Tillamook Head, as well as the Lewis and Clark Saltworks.

You cannot spend time in Oregon without checking out Mount Hood. The Timberline Trail and Mount Hood Scenic Loop are two ways to see this massive mountain peak. If you want even better views of Oregon, but not necessarily this mountain, I recommend heading over to Silver Falls State Park. The Trail of Ten Falls is located there. It is an incredible option for those who have always wanted to stand behind a waterfall or two.

Other top places to see in Oregon include:

  • Tumalo Falls
  • Portland Japanese Garden
  • St. John’s Bridge
  • Alvord Desert
  • Thor’s Well
  • Umpqua Hot Springs
  • Oregon Caves National Monument and Preserve
  • Sea Lion Caves

Amazing Festivals You Can’t-Miss in Oregon

Pendleton Whisky Music Fest

Every July, there is one day that stands out from all the rest in Pendleton, Oregon. That is the day when the Pendleton Whisky Music Fest is held! Country musicians hit the stage to play music all day long. While you are listening, you can devour local cuisine and drink your favorite whiskey. The best part is you can camp right on the festival grounds, so you embrace the fun and excitement of this event a little longer!

Portland Rose Festival

The Portland Rose Festival has been held for more than 100 years now. This festival always begins around Memorial Day weekend and lasts for approximately two weeks. There are too many parades to count during this festival. But you will also love the live music, fleet week, boat races, city fair, and the Rose Cup Races at the end of the festival.

Eugene Scottish Festival

The Eugene Scottish Festival is held in Eugene, Oregon, every May. This is a day-long event that is filled with Scottish music and fun activities. Your favorite thing to see during this festival will be the dog parade.

Are you ready to plan an incredible family vacation in Maine this year? I completely understand your desire to get away and can tell you that Maine is perfect for families looking to disconnect from it all on vacation! There are plenty of outdoor adventures in the state of Maine. But in addition to the wooded areas, you will find spectacular beaches next to the sparkling ocean. That means you can have a little of everything when you spend a few days, a week, or even a couple of weeks reconnecting with your family on your next vacation.

Plan Your Family Vacation in Maine with My Travel Guide

History in Maine

Maine has quite a long history, with the European settlers arriving on the shoreline back in 1525. Those Europeans did not settle in the area, though. The first European settlement ended up being in 1604. Unfortunately, a war broke out between the Europeans, or I should say the French and the Indian tribes living in the area. The French were defeated in that war and chose to form close bonds with the Indians instead of leaving the area.

For years, the area we now know as Maine was considered part of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. It wasn’t until March 15, 1820, that Maine became the 23rd state. There weren’t as many people left in Maine by the time it became a state because a lot of people chose to head out west. Ohio Fever caused numerous people to choose to venture west for warmer weather.

The locals who remained were thrilled with the lumber and shipbuilding boost that arrived with the California Gold Rush. However, people on the ships that took the goods to California ended up staying out there.

Nowadays, more than a million people live in the state of Maine. And that number grows every summer as travelers arrive to enjoy the beauty this part of the country is known for.

Weather in Maine

Spring in Maine

Maine’s location up in the far northeast makes it difficult to leave the snow and frost behind too early in the spring. Therefore, you should expect cool temperatures and a chance of frost through the end of April. This season begins with temperatures averaging 55 degrees, while May brings temperatures in the middle 60s.

Summer in Maine

The months of June through September are considered summer in Maine. Most days are warm during this time of the year, but it is not unusual to have a 90-degree day or two during the summer. Of course, the water in the ocean never catches up to the air temperatures, so you should expect that to be cold the entire season.

Fall in Maine

The days might still be warm during the month of September and even October during the fall. But the nights have a crisp coolness that allows the leaves to start changing color. The temperatures drop quickly from there, with daytime highs in the 40s by November. In fact, you may even see some snow flying around during the months of October and November.

Winter in Maine

Winter is long in the state of Maine, especially when the snow arrives early. Daytime temperatures will only reach 30 to 40 degrees, with the temperatures dropping to almost zero at night. Gray is the color of choice during the winter, yet the sun will peak out on occasion. Just don’t expect to see the sun too late in the day because the winter months have it setting by four in the afternoon.

What to Pack for a Vacation in Maine

When you decide to take a family vacation in Maine, you will have to pack according to the season you are visiting in. The summer months will have you wearing shorts, t-shirts, sundresses, and sandals. During the fall, winter, and spring, it will be all about pants, sweaters, sweatshirts, hats, gloves, and boots. Extra layers are necessary during the winter months, too, especially if you plan on being outside a lot.

Hiking will require hiking boots, while white water rafting and other water activities will require additional clothing for when you get wet. And don’t forget towels, which are helpful at any time of the year.

Activities to Embrace While on Vacation in Maine

There are so many different activities you can do with your family when you are on vacation in Maine. One of the first things you will want to do when you arrive is to walk along the shoreline. Of course, this is only if you are spending time by the ocean. If you are closer to destinations like Acadia National Park, you may prefer to hike the trails or drive around the scenic loop.

There are numerous biking trails you must consider if your entire family loves to ride bikes. The Kennebec River Rail Trail is an all-time favorite. Be prepared, though, because it is six and a half miles long. Don’t worry; you can do a section of it at a time so you do not get too tired out.

Whale watching is another fun family activity when you are vacationing in Maine. We must plan your trip carefully if you want to go whale watching though. These majestic creatures are only in the water along this shoreline from the middle of April until the end of September.

Other incredible family activities in Maine include:

  • Apple or Strawberry Picking
  • White Water Rafting
  • Skiing
  • Hiking to Waterfalls
  • Waterpark Adventures

Top Places to See on Vacation in Maine

Places to See in Maine - LL Bean Boot

Choosing which attractions to place at the top of your list of things to see in Maine is going to be a struggle. There are so many amazing attractions and destinations, and they aren’t close to each other. Depending on your personal top places, we may need to be a little creative when it comes to getting you to them all. No worries, though, because I can plan the perfect family vacation despite the logistical conundrum.

One of the top places on your list must be Acadia National Park. This impressive park has it all, including gorgeous sights and thrilling adventures. I recommend arriving at the park very early one morning, so you can watch the sun as it begins to rise. When you add this activity to your list of things to do, you will be one of the first people to watch the sunrise in the entire country!

Over in Portland’s Old Port, you will discover a ton of history along the cobblestone streets. The older colonial buildings are now home to numerous restaurants, shops, and breweries. People-watching is a must in this destination, so plan an extra hour or two for a different type of family activity.

If you have kids that are scared of nothing and brave, you may want to try tackling the Allagash Waterway with them. This 92-mile stretch of water will take you to the tucked-away spaces in the state. You can easily canoe or kayak as much of this waterway as you wish, with trips ranging from one day to ten days.

Winter months must be spent over at Sugarloaf and Sunday River. The skiing is the best in that part of the state, and the snowboarding isn’t too bad either!

Other spectacular places to see in Maine include:

  • Pemaquid Point Lighthouse
  • Desert of Maine
  • Kennebunkport
  • Stephen King’s Home
  • The Giant Boot at LL Bean
  • Lenny the Chocolate Moose at Len Libby Candies
  • Mount Katahdin
  • Cabbage Island

Amazing Festivals You Can’t-Miss in Maine

Most of the festivals you find in Maine are going to be all about the food! This shouldn’t be surprising since delicious food is everywhere in this state!

Maine Whoopie Pie Festival

Yes, there is a Whoopie Pie Festival in Maine! If you do not know what a whoopie pie is, let me share. Imagine two soft chocolate cookies stuffed with a delectable creamy filling that will have your mouth watering from the very first bite. This festival has taken place since 2009, and since the whoopie pie is now the official state treat, this festival isn’t stopping any time soon.

The day begins with a 3K walk or run, so you can earn your whoopie pie of the day. Afterward, you can wander around to see what the one hundred different vendors are offering as you listen to live music in the background. You definitely won’t want to miss being a participant in the whoopie pie eating contest in the afternoon!

Maine Potato Blossom Festival

The Maine Potato Blossom Festival is a 9-day event that is held every July. There are eighty-five different events for you to attend, although you will need to choose between a few that are happening at the same time. A few of the most popular options include the BBQ Cook-Off, live entertainment, yard sales throughout the town, and interactive exhibits. The fireworks over the river are the perfect ending to this festival.

Kennebunkport Festival

This is one of the festivals held in Maine every year that donates to local charities. This weeklong event is filled with art, culture, and food. As you are walking around, you can listen to live music or stop to watch one of the performances. You must attend a cocktail hour, as well as a dinner during this week of fun. After all, the proceeds are going to a good cause!

A vacation in Lanai and on this forgotten-about Hawaiian Island offers the least when it comes to the authentic Hawaiian experience. However, that shouldn’t stop you from wanting to visit this most centralized Hawaiian Island! If you happen to time your visit just right, you can see five different Hawaiian Islands from this one small island. Plus, since this destination is off the beaten path, you never know what you can possibly discover during your family vacation.

History on the Island of Lanai

The island of Lanai is full of history, geology, and gorgeous views. Over the years, Lanai has earned the nicknames “The Pineapple Isle” and “The Secluded Isle”. Prior to that, Lanai had an eerie history since the Polynesians thought the island was filled with evil spirits. Therefore, it took many years, until around the 1500s, before a person lived on this Hawaiian Island. That person was Kauluaau, and he was basically banished there to Lanai by his father. Kauluaau proved to everyone that the island was not filled with evil spirits, and he earned his right to return to his home island of Maui.

Some people decided to be brave and move to the island of Lanai, but many of them were killed by Kamehameha I, who was king at the time. It wasn’t until 1922, when James Dole purchased the island of Lanai to use as a pineapple plantation, that the island changed. But by the 1980s, pineapples were no longer being grown on this island. It was at that time that Lanai was slowly transformed into a tourist destination like many of the other Hawaiian Islands.

Weather in Lanai

The weather in Lanai is amazing all year round, just like all the other Hawaiian Islands. Therefore, this is another island that basically has two seasons.

Summer in Lanai

The warmest months of the year in Lanai are April through December. Those months are considered the summer months. It is very dry during the months of June through August, although the best months for swimming are August through October.

Winter in Lanai

The remaining months of the year are considered the winter months in Lanai. These months are not much cooler temperature-wise, but they can include a lot more rain.

Best Time to Vacation in Lanai with Your Family

There really isn’t the best time to vacation in Lanai with your family since the weather is fabulous all year long. However, if you want to avoid the crowds that can form on the island, you may want to avoid any time that includes school vacations. If those are the only times you can travel, though, you will be happy to know that the island of Lanai does not get as crowded as many of the other Hawaiian Islands do during those times of the year.

What to Pack for a Family Vacation in Lanai

You will find yourself doing a lot of outdoorsy stuff when you take your family vacation in Lanai. Therefore, you will want to wear comfortable sneakers and maybe even bring hiking boots along. Other than that, shorts, t-shirts, and sundresses will basically fill your suitcase.

Of course, an umbrella or raincoat is a must if you are visiting Lanai during what is considered their rainy season.

Places to Stay While on a Lanai Vacation with Family

There are only a couple hotels on the island of Lanai, but you may also find a vacation rental or two for your vacation. While you won’t have many options, I will make sure the accommodations you are staying in will have everything you will need for this time away from home with your family.

Foods You Must Try While on Vacation in Lanai

The island of Lanai has many of the Hawaiian foods all the other islands have. The only difference on this island is you have fewer places to try them all! There are not multiple coffee shops and cafés for those quick breakfast mornings. And when it comes to lunch and dinner, you won’t have dozens of restaurants to choose from. But that is okay because the options that are available on the island of Lanai will ensure you have some of the best meals possible during your family vacation!

A few tasty island dishes you must try while vacationing in Lanai include:

  • Venison
  • Wagyu beef
  • Hawaiian seafood
  • Hawaiian small plates (called pupus)

Activities to Embrace While on Vacation in Lanai

At first glance, you may think there won’t be a ton of fun activities to do with your family when you take a vacation in Lanai. However, I guarantee there are enough activities to keep you busy throughout your visit! Your kids will love swimming in tide pools, snorkeling in the ocean, and even trying to become a pro at boogie boarding. Other thrilling family activities include:

  • Movie nights at the historic community theater
  • Hiking
  • Tackle the 4-wheel drive trails
  • Golf
  • Whale watching
  • Horseback riding
  • Wander around the ruins at the Kaunolu Fishing Village
  • Fishing
  • Surfing
  • Cliff diving

Top Places to See While on Vacation in Lanai

The island of Lanai may be small, but that doesn’t mean you won’t find a few must-see attractions to visit! One of the good things about taking a family vacation in Lanai is you won’t need to worry about leaving out some of the top places to see. Since there are not dozens of options, you can easily add everything to your list of things to do. Here are the top three places I think everyone should see while on vacation in Lanai.

Garden of the Gods

Most people think gardens should be full of lush green vegetation. However, at the Garden of the Gods in Lanai, you will find a dusty barren site filled with boulders. You can visit this unique terrain at any time of the day. But I prefer to go just before the sun begins to set in the sky. It is at this time when the sun hits the rocks just right and turns them into bright shades of picturesque reds and purples.

Hulopoe Bay

One of the most popular destinations on the island of Lanai is Hulopoe Bay. You can choose to simply relax on the sand during your visit. However, I recommend entering the water for a swim or doing a little snorkeling. You should not enter the water at Hulopoe Bay during the winter months, though, because the waves are too treacherous. But that is the perfect time to see humpback whales and dolphins swimming by.

Munro Trail

If you have always wanted the chance to see six Hawaiian Islands at the same time, you must hike the Munro Trail. This trail is almost thirteen miles long. You will find yourself walking through canyons, forests, and even the ocean before you reach the top. If you do not want to hike the distance, you can always rent a Jeep to reach the end of the trail. It is also important to note that you will only be able to see all six Hawaiian Islands on a clear day. Therefore, you will want to choose the day of your hiking adventure wisely.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Family Vacation in Lanai

There are a few tips you must be aware of if you want to thoroughly enjoy your time on the island of Lanai. Here are a couple of tips to get you started on the family vacation of a lifetime.

  • Always Rent a Jeep – Rental cars are nice to have on many of the Hawaiian Islands. On the island of Lanai, I recommend renting a Jeep instead of a car. This will ensure you can easily reach all the destinations you want to see the most.
  • Bring Multiple Pairs of Sneakers – You will be doing a lot of walking while on a family vacation in Lanai. I recommend bringing multiple pairs of sneakers, so your feet won’t hurt as much toward the end of your trip.
  • Be Ready to Relax – There isn’t a traffic light on the island of Lanai, so that should tell you how laidback this island truly is. Make sure you are ready to embrace that laidback lifestyle and get some relaxation before you return home.

Planning a family vacation in Lanai is going to be a lot different than planning a family vacation on the Big Island or Maui. It will be a little easier planning your itinerary on Lanai, and you will have much more downtime too. But vacationing on Lanai will still give your family an experience of a lifetime. This is very important when you are creating memories to cherish forever.

Molokai is a Hawaiian Island that embraces the laidback lifestyle. This island has even been nicknamed the Friendly Isle because the locals are so friendly and welcoming. Molokai does not have as many of touristy attractions as the other Hawaiian Islands do. But it does offer pure Hawaiian culture and traditions. This is perfect if you want that authentic Hawaiian vibe during a family vacation in Molokai.

History on the Island of Molokai

The island of Molokai was formed more than one million years ago. The volcanoes, Kamakou and Maunaloa, both pushed up through the ocean to form this island. A third volcano, Kauhako, created a new section of this island many years later. Unfortunately, the entire island has not survived. A large section of the northern shoreline fell off into the sea. The new landscape that was left, though, is quite breathtaking.

Your family vacation in Molokai will have you hearing the numerous legends that have been passed down through the generations. One legend shares how the goddess of the hula, Laka, gave birth while doing the dance on this island. This special occasion is celebrated every May during what is called Ka Hula Piko.

Another legend is that of Kalaipahoa, the poisonwood gods. The gods entered the trees on Maunaloa and poisoned them. The poison was so great that any birds flying nearby were killed instantly.

Weather in Molokai

The weather on the island of Molokai is similar to all the other Hawaiian Islands. The seasons of spring, summer, and fall are basically the same, so they create one big summer season for locals and tourists alike.

Summer in Molokai

Summer in Molokai is warm and sunny. The trade winds can keep the temperatures on Molokai tolerable. However, when those trade winds are not blowing, both the heat and humidity creep up into the unbearable range. There is also very little rain during the summer in Molokai.

Winter in Molokai

The winter months are when you will see more rainfall on the island of Molokai. While the temperatures do drop at this time of the year, the daytime temperatures still reach the upper 70s. It is at night when the temperatures go down into the 60s.

Best Time to Vacation in Molokai

Any time of the year is the best time to vacation in Molokai! The warm weather, sunny conditions, and even the occasional rain make this island the perfect destination for a family getaway. It can be more crowded on this island during major holidays and school vacations, so you will want to keep that in mind when planning your vacation. The good news is that Molokai won’t be as crowded as Maui, Oahu, or the Big Island!

What to Pack for a Family Vacation in Molokai

It is all about the summer temperatures in Molokai, so shorts, t-shirts, and sundresses are the perfect items to place in your suitcases. I do recommend taking comfortable walking shoes to go with your sandals, as well as either an umbrella or raincoat for those rainy days.

Places to Stay While on a Molokai Vacation with Family

There are no major resorts on the island of Molokai. Instead, your family will cherish the memories you make as you stay in one of the island’s hotels, cottages, bed and breakfasts, and other vacation rental options. I recommend choosing accommodations that are close to the area you want to spend the most time in. It is also best to be quite close to the beach because you will be spending a lot of time there watching the sun rising and setting.

Foods You Must Try While on Vacation in Molokai

Molokai is not the Hawaiian Island you want to visit if you are looking for fine dining options throughout your family vacation. There are numerous cafés and smaller restaurants on this island. But honestly, there aren’t too many foods that stand out as must-try. I did find a couple of items though, that your family will be interested in when you are on vacation in Molokai.

  • Bread – There is one thing the locals on Molokai know how to do, and it is making amazing bread! The Kanemitsu Bakery can be found on Main Street, and it is where I recommend you purchase the bread you eat while on vacation. A round loaf of bread is placed in a paper bag for you to take back to your accommodations. You can even choose from different toppings that include cream cheese, blueberries, cinnamon, strawberry, and butter.
  • Plate Lunch – A plate lunch consists of two scoops of either macaroni salad or rice. You will also add either mahimahi, beef teriyaki, kalua pork, chicken katsu, or Korean barbecue to your plate.
  • Loco Moco – You must have quite the appetite to finish off a dish of loco moco in Molokai. A hamburger steak and cooked egg is placed on top of a bed of rice before being covered with brown gravy.

Activities to Embrace While on Vacation in Molokai

Molokai might not be the most popular of the Hawaiian Islands, but there is still plenty of things for you to do with your family when you are visiting. Your kids will love spending time on the beach, whether they are building sandcastles or swimming and snorkeling in the water. There aren’t any shopping malls on Molokai, but you will see a few shops you can enter to purchase those much-needed souvenirs. Other activities to embrace while on vacation in Molokai include:

  • Hike the trails
  • Take a mule ride
  • Horseback riding
  • Boat rides
  • Helicopter tours
  • Whale watching
  • Mountain biking

Top Places to See While on Vacation in Molokai

Kalaupapa Peninsula

The Kalaupapa Peninsula is an area on the island of Molokai. You must hike, ride a mule, or fly to the Kalaupapa Peninsula. The landscape of the peninsula is gorgeous, but you will be more intrigued by the history of this destination. After all, this is where all the locals who had leprosy were sent to live their final days. The history from that time is still present on this peninsula, and it is best to spend an entire day there exploring.

Halawa Valley

You must take a tour if you want to wander around Halawa Valley. During your tour, you will learn how the locals have lived off the land for all these years. While the hike is amazing, it will be the time you spend swimming at Mo’oula Falls that will be the highlight of your day.

Papohaku Beach Park

Papohaku Beach Park is one of the largest beaches on the Hawaiian Islands. The sandy shoreline is three miles long. You can spend an entire day at this beach by arriving early to watch the sunrise. Then play in the sand, swim, and walk along the shoreline until it is time for the sun to set over the water.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Family Vacation in Molokai

Molokai can be one of the trickier Hawaiian Islands to visit because there aren’t a lot of touristy options. Here are a couple of tips for getting the most out of your family vacation in Molokai.

  • Everything is closed on Sundays – You won’t find anything open on a Sunday in Molokai. Therefore, you may want to avoid having this day as one of your vacation days. It might be better to return home on a Sunday.
  • Use caution when driving – Deer are everywhere on the island of Molokai, so you must be cautious when driving, especially at night. You will find the most deer on the western side of Molokai.
  • You must take the tours in Molokai – You may be the person who loves to explore on their own when on family vacations, but in Molokai, taking tours is the best option. The local guides will ensure you have the best time visiting this Hawaiian Island. The best part is these tours are done in an SUV, so you won’t be on a bus with dozens of other people.

Planning a family vacation in Molokai is quite different than planning a vacation on any of the other Hawaiian Islands. There are fewer people, as well as fewer things to do. And yet, as you can see, your entire family will have the adventure of a lifetime!

Out of all the Hawaiian Islands, Kauai has managed to preserve the cultures, traditions, and even values of the locals who have called the island home for many years. Every town on this island is small. All the buildings are considered short when compared to other cities around the world. And the only way to reach this island is by an inter-island flight since the locals blocked what could have been a lucrative ferry service to Kauai. Don’t let the lack of massive buildings and ferry service squash your beliefs about Kauai, though! There are plenty of incredible adventures you can take with your family. And you can enjoy the laidback lifestyle and delectable foods at the same time!

History on the Island of Kauai

The island of Kauai was formed more than five million years ago. An active hot spot from below the Pacific Tectonic Plate spewed magma up into the air. When that magma landed, it formed this island, as well as the other Hawaiian Islands. The Polynesians were the first people to live on Kauai. However, it is the traditions and cultures of the Tahitians, who arrived on Kauai many years later, that you will experience today during your visit. Europeans arrived on the island of Kauai in the late 1700s. They brought new trades and business ideas to the island. However, none of them could erase the significant history that was already in place on the island of Kauai.

Weather in Kauai

As with all the other Hawaiian Islands, Kauai only has two seasons. Those two seasons are summer and winter. And while there are two distinct seasons on this island, you can’t really tell the difference between the two. The reason for this is the temperatures are only a few degrees apart.

Summer in Kauai

Summer in Kauai is slightly warmer, so you will see the thermometer rise if you vacation there at this time of the year. There is also less rain in Kauai during the summer months. If you happen to stay on the East or North Shore, you will still get more rain than you would on the Southern shoreline.

Winter in Kauai

The winter months in Kauai bring a lot more rain, especially on the North and East Shore. The temperatures will also decrease slightly, but it never really gets below the 70s. Visiting during the winter months may mean lots of rain, but it is excellent for seeing lush flowers and other foliage.

Best Time to Vacation in Kauai

The best time to vacation in Kauai is either between the months of April and June or September and November. The temperatures are quite mild during those months, so you won’t need to deal with the extreme heat on the island. Plus, the cost of airfare and accommodations is lower during these times of the year.

What to Pack for a Family Vacation in Kauai

Most of the time, a family vacation in Hawaii is going to include packing a lot of shorts, t-shirts, and sundresses. A vacation on the island of Kauai, though is also going to include raincoats and umbrellas. The extra rain you will experience when on this island will not put a damper on your plans if you are dressed accordingly!

Places to Stay While on a Kauai Vacation with Family

Resorts are a popular option for accommodations when vacationing in Kauai with your family. However, I can also search for bed and breakfasts and vacation rental homes and condos for your stay. I understand that every family is unique. This is the main reason why I don’t only work with one resort or one resort brand. I prefer to customize every vacation for your personal needs, and that includes where you will all lay your head down at night!

Foods You Must Try While on Vacation in Kauai

One of my favorite parts of traveling is getting to try new foods! Even if you have a family of picky eaters, there is going to be at least one local food that everyone will love. A few of the must-try foods in Kauai include:

  • Taro – Taro is a vegetable that has been included in Hawaiian dishes for many years. You can eat the entire plant. The leaves are similar to kale and spinach. The roots are used the most often, though. Most of the time, taro is included in poi dishes. The roots are normally steamed and have a sour taste.
  • Lilikoi – Lilikoi is the Hawaiian term for passion fruit. While you can eat lilikoi on its own, I recommend having lilikoi pie. If you decide you love lilikoi, you can purchase lilikoi mustard, syrup, and jelly to take home with you.
  • Lomi Lomi Salmon – In Hawaiian, lomi lomi means to massage. So, with this dish, your salted salmon will be massaged before being mixed with green onion, sweet onion, and tomatoes. The locals mix their lomi lomi salmon with kalua pork and poi to create what they call a broke mouth ono.
  • Puka Dog – The puka dog is considered the Hawaiian hot dog. A Polish sausage is tucked into a piece of toasted Hawaiian sweet bread. While that would be delicious enough, what really makes this dish is the numerous toppings! A garlic lemon sauce is put on first, and then you can choose from a few sweet fruit toppings. I prefer mango or pineapple, but papaya, banana, star fruit, and coconut are also options.

Activities to Embrace While on Vacation in Kauai

You may be tempted to spend long lazy days at the beaches on the island of Kauai. However, I recommend adding so much more to your family’s itinerary! After all, where else in the world can you paddle into sea caves, swim with turtles inside a sparkling cove, and hike deep down into a canyon to see a waterfall?

Other incredible family activities to embrace while on vacation in Kauai include:

  • Ziplining through the tops of trees in the forest
  • Helicopter rides down into the valleys
  • Paddling along a sacred river
  • ATV rides
  • Attending a Luau
  • Mountain tubing
  • Snorkeling
  • Swimming
  • Boat tours
  • Train rides through plantations
  • Wander through botanical gardens
  • Horseback riding tours
  • Cross a Swinging Bridge

Top Places to See While on Vacation in Kauai

There is so much to see and do when you are on a family vacation in Kauai. I don’t want you to spend hours searching to find the best places to visit, so I thought I would share the three must-visit destinations on the island of Kauai.

Waimea Canyon

Waimea Canyon is near Koke’e State Park, and it is easy to check both these destinations off your list in one day. The canyon is considered the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. It is fourteen miles wide and more than three thousand feet deep. If you are looking for a picturesque landscape, you can’t go wrong with a visit to Waimea Canyon. The craggy cliffs, crested buttes, and lush vegetation will overwhelm your senses. Just don’t forget to seek out the rivers and waterfalls that will take your visit to the next level. This is an excellent location for hiking too. I recommend the Waipo’o Falls Trail or the Cliff Trail Lookout, but any of them will provide an afternoon of adventure for your family.

Hanalei Bay

If you are staying in an exclusive resort during your vacation in Kauai, you are most likely in the Hanalei Bay area. There are three beaches in this area, and they all lead to the others. Therefore, you can begin at Waioli Beach Park before wandering down to either Black Pot Beach or Hanalei Beach Park. These beaches offer lots of sandy space, so they never seem too crowded. You must be aware that Hanalei Bay is a favorite of the local surfers though, so you will want to be prepared for extra people during the height of the surfing season.

Napali Coast

This coastline can be found on the northwest shoreline of Kauai. The Napali Coast is seventeen miles long and is filled with massive steep rocky cliffs. You cannot travel along this coastline in a car. Instead, you must choose to either hike to see the natural beauty of the area or plan to take a boat or helicopter tour. I must warn you that the hike along the Kalalau Trail is quite strenuous. If you are not an experienced hiker, it is best to choose one of the other tour options I mentioned above.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Family Vacation in Kauai

I know you want to have the best vacation ever when you are over on the island of Kauai. To make sure that happens, I have decided to share a few tips that will help you get the most out of your family vacation in Kauai.

  • Rent a Vehicle – Public transportation on Kauai isn’t very good, so I always recommend renting a car when you are vacationing on this island.
  • Practice Travel Pono – Travel pono means to travel righteously when you are in Kauai. Basically, it means do not litter, be respectful of the land, and leave every space cleaner than it was when you arrived. This will ensure the island will stay beautiful for many years to come.
  • Keep an Open Mind When Experiencing the Culture – While you will learn so much about the culture in Kauai, you will also learn so much more about yourself at the same time.
  • Be Safe When Exploring – You may want to simply hit the open road when you are vacationing in Kauai, but it is best to be prepared for many different scenarios before you do. I recommend checking out the current weather conditions before venturing out for the day. This will ensure you do not get stuck in a storm or have hotter weather than you were prepared for.

These are many of the things you must know before planning a fabulous vacation in Kauai! I want you to know that you do not need to plan this vacation on your own. As an expert travel advisor, I can customize your dream family vacation in Kauai for you!

Family vacations are always filled with thrilling adventures, laughter, and time spent making those memories with your kids that will last a lifetime. While you may have skipped over family vacations in recent years, now is the time to start enjoying them once again. Maui is one of the best destinations to get your family adventures started! This beautiful Hawaiian Island has everything you could possibly want for your next family getaway and so much more. So, let’s get you started with knowing what you must be aware of when you are vacationing with family in this gorgeous island destination!

History on the Island of Maui

The island of Maui still honors its past, despite constructing numerous visitor attractions over the years. One of the best locations on the island to visit to experience the history is the town of Lahaina. This town was the very first capital of what was once known as the Kingdom of Hawaii. It was once a whaling port before turning into a plantation settlement. I recommend you take the self-guided tour through Lahaina to experience the history firsthand.

As soon as you finish exploring Lahaina with your family, you will want to check out the history that lies within the ranches, plantations, and missionaries. And if you are feeling quite adventurous, you can venture to the slopes of Haleakala to find the gravesite of Charles Lindbergh. The cemetery is located next to the Palapala Ho’omau Church and is approximately twelve miles past Hana.

Weather in Maui

The island of Maui offers a multitude of micro-climates. This means it could be raining on one side of the island and sunny on the other side. As we are planning your family vacation in Hawaii, I will help you decide where you should stay and what you should do according to the different weather patterns you may encounter. And don’t worry, the weather can change instantly on this island, so what starts out as a rainy and cool morning can turn into a gorgeously sunny and warm day!

There are basically only two seasons on the island of Maui. Those two seasons are summer and winter. And honestly, there is very little difference between the two seasons. Summertime includes the months of April through October, and winter is from November through March.

Summer in Maui

Summer in Maui is usually very dry and warm. The temperatures reach the middle to upper 80s during the day and very rarely go below the mid-60s. This is also the time of the year when the ocean water reaches temperatures in the middle 80s.

Winter in Maui

The winter months in Maui bring lower temperatures, with December through February being the coldest. The high temperatures during the day will only be in the low 80s, while the lows at night reach the middle 60s. The ocean water temperature drops at this time of the year as well. This means you will only be swimming in water that is in the mid-70s. Rain is more prominent at this time of the year, but that rain does bring massive waves for surfers.

Best Time to Vacation in Maui

There really isn’t the best time to vacation in Maui because the weather is nice there all year long. However, if you want to keep the weather, crowd levels, and costs in mind, I would have to say that the months of April, May, August, September, and October are the best time to take a vacation in Maui. During those months, you will experience nice weather, as well as fewer crowds and lower prices.

What to Pack for a Family Vacation in Maui

Since Maui is a summer destination all year round, you must pack shorts, t-shirts, skirts, and sundresses for your time on this island. Yes, pants and sweatshirts may also be necessary, depending on where you are visiting on the island. An umbrella and raincoat will also be helpful on occasion. Your goal is to pack comfortable and casual clothing, as well as a couple of nicer outfits for those fine dining occasions.

Places to Stay While on a Maui Vacation with Family

The resorts on Maui are the most popular options amongst many families. However, you can also choose to stay at one of the many hotels, bed, and breakfasts, and even vacation rentals. I can help you find the perfect accommodations for your family vacation in Maui. Therefore, if you want to stay in a secluded bungalow by the beach, and there is one available, I will make your beachfront bungalow dreams come true!

Foods You Must Try While on Vacation in Maui

Like all the other Hawaiian Islands, there are a few foods you must try when you are vacationing in Maui. Some of the foods are also must-try options on some of the other islands.

A few of the local foods you must try while on vacation in Maui include:

  • Maui Pineapples – You can find Maui pineapples at many farm stands and luaus. However, you may prefer to take a pineapple plantation tour before tasting this delicious fruit!
  • Lunch Plate or Mixed Plate Lunch – The lunch plate or mixed plate lunch is a standard dish in Maui. Both dishes include protein, rice, and salad. The only difference between the two is the lunch plate contains one protein, while the mixed plate lunch includes two types of protein.
  • Poke – Poke is a staple on any of the Hawaiian Islands. This diced raw fish dish is served in many ways, so I recommend trying a few different options during your Maui vacation.
  • Spam – The locals in Hawaii eat the most Spam in the world, which is why there are so many more varieties for sale there! This mainstay dish has been popular on the islands since World War II. Back then, it was a simple way to spend as little money as possible while feeding the soldiers a filling meal. Today, there are many different Spam dishes available for you to try when you are on vacation in Maui. Spam musubi is the dish you will see the most in Maui, but you will also find the Spam, eggs, and rice breakfast and the Spam and hash breakfast.
  • Shave Ice – You cannot visit any of the Hawaiian Islands and not indulge in at least one bowl of shaved ice! The shaved ice is often topped with fruity flavors< but you can also have it topped with coconut, azuki bean, or condensed milk.

Activities to Embrace While on Vacation in Maui

Your time in Maui can be spent surfing, snorkeling, and dancing at Luaus. But there are so many other activities you must embrace while you are making memories in Maui. A few favorite activities in Maui include:

  • Parasailing
  • Treasure Hunting
  • Hiking
  • Underwater Submarine Tours
  • Mermaid Adventures – Yes, you get to learn how to swim like a mermaid!
  • Ziplining
  • Windsurfing
  • Kitesurfing
  • Stargazing
  • Rappelling Down Waterfalls
  • Whale Watching

Top Places to See While on Vacation in Maui

I could instantly share dozens of attractions and places for you to see while you are on your family vacation in Maui. However, I thought it would be most helpful if I shared the top three that must be on your itinerary. This will ensure you see the best Maui has to offer and still have time for those other adventures you have been dreaming about!

The Road to Hana

The Road to Hana twists and turns along the eastern shoreline of the island. You will find yourself driving through lush rainforests and past rushing waterfalls as you stop at one lookout after another. This road is fifty-two miles long and is filled with hairpin turns. This is a daylong adventure your family won’t want to miss. And while you can make this drive on your own, it is usually best to leave the driving to a tour company. That way, you can focus on the scenery instead of your white knuckles on the steering wheel!

Waianapanapa State Park

Every state park within the Hawaiian Islands is worthy of a visit. However, Waianapanapa State Park offers the opportunity for your family to sink their toes into black sand. While you may be tempted to take a quick walk along the black sandy shoreline and take a few pictures, I recommend you spend at least half the day at this stunning state park. Freshwater caves can be discovered if you take the time to do a little hiking. And if you don’t want to swim in the pools within those caves, you can always stick to the trails that weave along the coast. Those trails will take you to natural blowholes, sea stacks, and burial grounds.

Haleakala National Park

This national park is quite large and is comprised of thirty thousand acres of land on the island of Maui. It is best to make the drive to the summit of Haleakala early in the morning to watch the sun as it rises. Afterward, it will be all about the Haleakala Crater and the Pipiwai Trail. That trail will lead you directly to Waimoku Falls.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Family Vacation in Maui

Vacations in Maui are a lot of fun, but your family will want to be aware of a few things prior to your arrival. The best tips I have to share with you for vacations in Maui include:

  • The Maui Bus – Getting around the island of Maui doesn’t need to be a challenge! Instead of renting a vehicle, you should consider taking the Maui Bus. The convenient schedule will allow you to see many of the highlights of the island for a small fee.
  • Take Advantage of Happy Hours – If you want to save some cash on food and drinks, I recommend taking advantage of the happy hours you discover at the local restaurants.
  • Consider Volunteering – To truly get the full Maui experience, I recommend volunteering for an organization during your family vacation. This is an excellent way to see some of the more remote destinations in Maui, as well as make some lifelong friends.
  • Embrace Hawaiian Time – Things do not usually start on time in Maui because they take a laid-back approach to life. I recommend embracing this Hawaiian time and using the waiting time for a little extra relaxation or people-watching.

Now that you know everything you should for a spectacular family vacation in Maui, I must ask you….
