One of my favorite adventure travel destinations lies deep in Patagonia. If you dream of spending time in the pristine wilderness for your next empty nester vacation, I recommend adding Aysén to your travel list.

Yes, Aysén is a remote region in Chilean Patagonia. But you will embrace the remoteness once you capture a glimpse of the breathtaking glaciers, towering peaks, and serene fjords.

There are so many thrilling adventures you can have during a vacation in Aysén. I recommend starting with a trek along the Cerro Castillo circuit. This is a multi-day trek that offers the most stunning mountain views in Patagonia.

The trails are challenging, yet rewarding, as they lead you to alpine lakes and jagged peaks.

If you need a low-key activity one day, take a cruise through the labyrinth of fjords. The fjords in Aysén are untouched by humans. Therefore, you will see plenty of whales, sea lions, and dolphins along the way.

Another amazing activity will take you through the Marble Caves via kayak. As you paddle through the ethereal caves, you will be mesmerized by the swirls of blue and white marble.

Faroe Islands – Europe’s Wild and Rugged Wonderland

The Faroe Islands are an adventure travel destination nestled between Iceland and Norway. These islands are untouched and considered paradise for empty nesters who are searching for an off-the-beaten path adventure.

Puffin lovers will want to take a rib boat tour amongst the dramatic cliffs of the Faroe Islands. You will be amazed at how close to the puffins you get during your high-speed boat tour. Of course, you will want to keep an eye out for razorbills, seabirds, and other wildlife during this thrilling adventure.

You cannot visit the Faroe Islands and not take a hike to Sørvágsvatn. This floating lake doesn’t actually float. However, the optical illusion will make the lake appear to float in front of your eyes. I recommend having your camera and video camera ready to capture it all to show your friends and family back home.

One last activity you should consider in this adventure travel destination is driving along the Buttercup Route. This scenic route will take you through quaint villages, as you pass by rolling green hills and rushing waterfalls.

Take the time to stop along the way to appreciate the true beauty of this destination. Plus, you’ll get to visit with the locals to learn more about their cultures and traditions.

Raja Ampat, Indonesia – An Adventure Travel Destination Plus Paradise

Do you and your partner love diving into crystal clear water? If you said yes, let me recommend vacationing in Raja Ampat in Indonesia.

This adventure travel destination is known as the Amazon of the Ocean. During your vacation, you will experience the most biodiverse marine ecosystem on the planet.

There are plenty of activities to keep you busy in this hidden gem of a travel destination. However, the most popular activities include kayaking, scuba diving, and snorkeling.

The waters surrounding Raja Ampat are considered a diver’s paradise. Snorkel and dive amongst more than six hundred species of coral, as well as fifteen hundred species of fish. You also won’t want to miss out on spending time with the manta rays and sea turtles.

Spend time on top of the water, as you kayak amongst the secret lagoons, mangrove forests, and towering limestone formations. And stay slightly further from the water during a hike to the breathtaking Piaynemo viewpoint.

The hike to the viewpoint is short. However, it is steep. The trek is worth the journey though, thanks to the stunning views of the lush islets and sparkling water from the top.

Lofoten Islands, Norway – Arctic Adventures Await

You can’t be afraid of cold weather when you choose to visit this adventure travel destination as empty nesters. A vacation in this Norwegian archipelago is an incredible place to kayak, hike, and surf. Of course, this is when you are not wandering around the charming fishing villages.

The best part about visiting this hidden gem travel destination during the winter is you can capture glimpses of the Northern Lights.

Start your empty nester vacation by kayaking through Reinefjorden. These waters will take you past many of the fishing villages and dramatic peaks of the Lofoten Islands.

Hiking the Reinebringen Trail will allow you to see panoramic views of Reine and the surrounding islands. This hiking trail is steep. However, it won’t be too bad, as long as you take your time.

While the Northern Lights can be seen from the Lofoten Islands during the winter months, the Midnight Sun is present during the summer. All you need to do is tell me which one of these magical experiences is highest on your list of things to see and I will plan your vacation accordingly.

Trek along the stunning Ala-Kul Lake. This alpine lake trek will take you through high mountain passes and glaciers.

Or go for a horseback ride through Song-Kul. You will feel carefree, as you ride with local shepherds along the untouched grasslands.

Eagle hunting is one of the popular traditions in Kyrgyzstan. It has been passed down through generations. And you can watch the locals, as they continue to share this pastime.

Madagascar – A Wildlife Wonderland

Okay, so you have probably heard of Madagascar, thanks to Disney movies. However, you probably haven’t given this adventure travel destination a second thought when it comes to planning your empty nester vacation.

Thankfully, I am here to make sure you don’t make a mistake by forgetting about one of the best adventure trips for empty nesters!

After all, you won’t see some of the wildlife roaming around this island anywhere else in the world.

Start your vacation in Madagascar by trekking through Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park. You will see limestone pinnacles as you hike through this park.

Some of the villages in Madagascar can only be reached via the water. I recommend canoeing down the Manambolo River to see those villages. Of course, this trip will also allow you to pass through caves and gorges you wouldn’t see from the inner part of Madagascar.

No matter what you do, plan on spotting Indri lemurs, colorful chameleons, and other unique wildlife during your vacation in Madagascar.

Bali, Indonesia – Travel Bucket List Island Getaway

Okay, so who hasn’t dreamed of a vacation in Bali? This is one of the travel bucket list destinations when it comes to beach vacations for solo women.

Bali offers a strong solo traveler community, as well as friendly locals. These two things make it one of the best islands for solo female travelers. Add in the cultural experiences, natural beauty, and thriving wellness scene, and you have everything you have ever dreamed about for your solo vacation.

While planning your island getaway, I can book yoga classes or a wellness retreat for you. All you need to do is let me know what type of wellness vacation you are interested in, and I will make it happen.

Of course, you don’t need to spend your entire vacation in Bali meditating and performing yoga moves. There are plenty of other activities that will make this your best vacation yet.

Start with a trip to Ubud’s Sacred Monkey Forest. You will love walking around this lush sanctuary. Ancient temples are scattered throughout the forest. Plus, playful monkeys are everywhere you turn.

I do recommend keeping all your personal items in a zipped bag while in the Sacred Monkey Forest. The monkeys are known to steal items from people. The item they steal the most is sunglasses, so you may want to pack those away too.

Learning how to make local dishes like nasi goreng and satay is simple when you take a Balinese cooking class. Peaceful nature walks can be taken along the Tegalalang Rice Terraces. And you will experience culture at the Uluwatu Temple.

I recommend visiting the Uluwatu Temple at sunset. This is when the Kecak Fire Dance is performed against the backdrop of the setting sun.

Santorini, Greece

Santorini is another one of the island getaways that is perfect for solo women travelers. This picturesque island is packed with breathtaking sunsets, white buildings with blue roofs, and sparkling blue water. The best part about visiting this island is it is simple to navigate the safe streets.

One of the best things to do during a beach vacation in Santorini is watching the sunset from Oia. This is one of the most famous sunset spots in the entire world. I recommend arriving early to claim your spot, because it does get crowded. Especially during peak travel seasons.

Both Red Beach and Kamari Beach are unique beaches. They each have a contrast of red and black sand. That contrasting sand was created by nearby volcanic activity.

History is abundant at the Akrotiri Archaeological Site. This Minoan settlement has been preserved by volcanic ash. Many people compare it to Pompeii, but don’t skip it if you have already seen Pompeii. Akrotiri has its own unique features you won’t want to miss.

Of course, you won’t want to skip a wine tour while on your island getaway in Santorini. These wine tours include visits to traditional vineyards where you can taste local wines like Assyrtiko.

Amazing historical destinations for solo female travelers. 

Malta

Malta is one of those island getaways that is a hidden gem in the Mediterranean. A beach vacation in Malta will have you visiting spectacular beaches and exploring history.

I recommend starting with a visit to Mdina, which is also called the Silent City. This medieval town holds a mystical charm. Plus, you can’t beat the panoramic views you can see from every section of town.

Explore culture and history at the Megalithic Temples. And more history is available amongst the historic streets of Valletta. Stop into one of the cafes in between sightseeing to eat a local dish or two.

Relaxation is possible when you spend time at the Blue Lagoon on Comino Island. The water is perfect for swimming. And the sand is perfect for lounging in a chair, as you get your daily dose of Vitamin D.

If you want more action while in the water, venture over to Gozo. Diving is excellent in Gozo. You can spend time exploring old shipwrecks and underwater caves.

Seychelles – Island Getaway in Paradise

Seychelles is paradise within the Indian Ocean. There are one hundred fifteen islands within Seychelles. Each one offers powdery white sandy beaches, lush tropical landscapes, and crystal-clear water.

If you are searching for adventure, tranquility, and gorgeous views for your solo woman island getaway, Seychelles is the perfect option!

I recommend beginning your solo female beach vacation on Praslin Island. The Vallée de Mai Nature Reserve is located there. Diverse birdlife fills this UNESCO World Heritage Site. One of the unique birds you will see is the black parrot. Of course, you will want to take the time to see the rare Coco de Mer Palm Tree while you are walking around as well.

Praslin Island is also home to Anse Lazio. This is one of the most beautiful beaches in the entire world. Simply stare at the granite boulders nearby to transport yourself into a deep relaxing state. Or head into the water for a swim or to do a little snorkeling with marine life.

Climb to the summit of the highest peak in Seychelles while hiking in Morne Seychellois National Park. Go snorkeling or diving at Sainte Anne Marine National Park. Or take an ox-cart ride to Anse Source d’Argent to relax on La Digue Island.

Fresh seafood, coconut-infused curries, and other local delicacies will be available on restaurant menus each day. It is best to be active each day, so you have an appetite when it is time to enjoy these dishes.

Fiji

More than three hundred islands make up Fiji in the South Pacific. This is the perfect island getaway for solo women, thanks to the friendly locals, welcoming culture, and abundance of group activities.

Start your solo woman beach vacation by island hopping in the Yasawa and Mamanuca Islands. There are luxury resorts on both islands. You will find luxurious rooms just steps away from the beautiful beaches. And the amenities will make you feel like you are in your home away from home.

After some relaxation, you will be more than ready to tackle snorkeling or diving around the Rainbow Reef. This reef is known as the Soft Coral Capital of the World. Manta rays, sharks, and lots of colorful coral will surround you in the water.

Next, hike to the Tavoro Waterfalls within Bouma National Heritage Park on Taveuni Island. Or explore a traditional Fijian village after experiencing a traditional welcoming ritual.

The best activity for this island getaway though is the Cloud 9 Floating Bar. It is located in the middle of the ocean. Trust me when I say there is nothing better than floating in the middle of the ocean, enjoying the views, and sipping on your favorite cocktail.

Nine volcanic islands create The Azores within the Atlantic Ocean. This small piece of paradise is perfect for solo women who are seeking adventure, as well as time in nature. There are plenty of outdoor activities to choose from. And the environment is safe for females traveling alone.

One of your favorite things during this island getaway will be seeing Sete Cidades. Sparkling water fills this twin-lake crater. Lush greenery surrounds the crater, creating an iconic destination within the Azores. You will find this crater on São Miguel Island.

While on São Miguel Island, do a little whale watching. There are more than twenty different species of whales swimming amongst the islands throughout the year.

If your desire is to relax during your solo woman beach vacation, I recommend visiting Terra Nostra Park and Hot Springs. This botanical garden is located in Furnas. You can spend hours soaking in the mineral-rich waters of the thermal hot springs.

More adventurous activities in the Azores include hiking in Faial Island and canyoning and waterfall rappelling in Flores.

Visit Angra do Heroísmo to experience history firsthand on Terceira Island. This town is full of colorful buildings, historic forts, and a relaxed atmosphere. Try a few local dishes while you are there. Especially the cozido das furnas. It is a traditional stew slow-cooked underground using volcanic heat.

You really can’t get more adventurous than a safari trip to Kenya or Tanzania! If you love the outdoors and wildlife, a trip to these countries will have you experiencing the thrills of a lifetime.

I recommend visiting these countries during the Great Migration. You can easily spot thousands of animals making their way from Serengeti in Tanzania to Maasai Mara in Kenya. Of course, they will head back to where they came from a few months later.

The Great Migration is an excellent time to see the Big Five, as well as many other animals. I can help you plan your trip, so you see the best of the Great Migration during your adventure trip for empty nesters.

There are so many other things to do in Kenya and Tanzania than see the Great Migration. You can simply head out on a guided tour or game drive to spot the Big Five. These guided tours and game drives will have you staying in luxurious safari lodges.

I recommend exploring the trails within Torres del Paine National Park in Chile before heading over to Mount Fitz Roy in Argentina.

There are multi-day hikes, like the W Circuit, available. Or you can simply tackle shorter day hikes during this adventure trip for empty nesters.

You must be a slightly experienced hiker for this type of outdoor adventure. Therefore, hitting the trails prior to your trip will ensure you see all the breathtaking vistas of glaciers, mountains, and lakes while on vacation in Chile and Argentina.

Cycle Along the Danube River in Europe

While I prefer to sail the Danube River to see the nearby towns in Europe, I understand there are some people who want a more active way to see the sights. Well, you can’t get much more active than cycling along this beautiful river!

The Danube Cycle Path will have you seeing the sights in Austria, Germany, and Hungary. This pathway is mostly flat. And yet, it will take you through charming villages, vineyards, and even historic cities like Budapest and Vienna.

You can easily conquer this adventure trip for empty nesters on your own. However, there are guided tours that will ensure you don’t miss a moment of history or must-see sights along the way.

Go Whitewater Rafting in Colorado

You don’t need to travel overseas to have an amazing outdoor adventure for empty nesters. The Arkansas River in Colorado offers incredible rapids to get your hearts racing.

A trip through Royal Gorge or through Browns Canyon is suitable for all skill levels. So, don’t think this trip isn’t for you if you have never gone whitewater rafting before.

While you can camp out during your whitewater rafting adventures, that isn’t your only option. I can book a room or suite at a luxurious hotel or resort nearby to ensure you get the pampering you need in between your adventures on the water.

After all, I know how important soaking tubs, spa treatments, and hot meals are after a day out fighting the rapids.

Go Sailing in the British Virgin Islands – A Relaxing Adventure Trip for Empty Nesters

The British Virgin Islands are one of the best places to rent a private yacht. Or join a sailing tour to explore the nearby gems.

Imagine spending your day in a hidden cove. Or snorkeling amongst vibrant coral reefs. It is the perfect way to have a few adventures together as empty nesters, while enjoying some relaxation during your trip.

Explore the Glaciers in Iceland

Glaciers, waterfalls, and volcanic landscapes are all what draws people to beautiful Iceland. I have seen too many people discount this gorgeous destination when thinking of future adventure trips for empty nesters. Which is why I need to share it with you, so you don’t make the same mistake!

Popular destinations in Iceland include Vatnajökull and Langjökull. A visit to either of those will allow you to hike or snowmobile to the stunning glaciers. You can even explore the ice caves if the weather is cooperative.

Of course, don’t forget to check out the nearby waterfalls and geysers, while taking in all the volcanic landscapes.

An adventure trip for empty nesters in Iceland can include all this and more. Oh, and since you will need to fly into the capital of Reykjavik, I will make sure you see all the local attractions in the city during your vacation.

Go Island Hopping in the Greek Cyclades

Do you want to combine water adventures with land adventures during your next empty nesters vacation? Well, you can easily do that when you choose to go island hopping in the Greek Cyclades.

The Cyclades Islands include the islands of Santorini, Mykonos, and Paros. Basically, the Greek Islands on your travel bucket list!

When you are on the islands, you can explore the ancient ruins, as well as the charming villages. Dine at local restaurants and eat authentic Greek cuisine.

Out on the water, you can relax on the boat with others. Or if you take a private yacht, you’ll be by yourselves. Swimming, snorkeling, diving, and spectacular sunsets will all be waiting for you.

Another must-do is eating a traditional Bedouin-style dinner underneath the sparkling stars. You may think it will be too sandy for dining but trust me when I say the sand is one thing you won’t be eating during this outdoor adventure.

Go Skiing in the Swiss Alps – A Snowy Adventure Trip for Empty Nesters

Do you love to ski? Do you love vacations that include your favorite activities like skiing? If you said yes, fly to the Swiss Alps for world-class skiing and snowboarding!

Iconic Swiss destinations like St. Moritz and Zermatt are waiting for empty nesters like you to hit the slopes. You can spend hours skiing the slopes of your dreams. Then afterwards, visit the charming alpine villages.

Gourmet dining restaurants are scattered throughout the villages. So, you never need to travel far for delicious food and a chance to meet new friends.

Venture Out to Explore the Galapagos Islands

Outdoor adventure trips for empty nesters can include almost any destination. However, no destination is as perfect for outdoor adventures as the Galapagos Islands.

A vacation in the Galapagos Islands can include ample time snorkeling with sea lions. On land you will have the opportunity to spot giant tortoises and blue-footed boobies. And you won’t want to skip hiking amongst some of the best volcanic landscapes in the world.

While cruises are the best way to see multiple islands here, you can easily visit just one or two. Simply let me know your dreams when it comes to an empty nesters vacation in the Galapagos Islands, and I will make them come true.

Go Kayaking in Alaska

Alaska is one of my favorite vacation destinations. I have been numerous times either by myself or with family or friends. There are so many ways to experience Alaska. You can fly into the city of Anchorage or Fairbanks and simply stay there.

Or you can utilize boats and seaplanes to explore more of the state. However, my favorite way to explore rugged Alaska is via cruise ship. Your cruise ship will take you into areas you may not have time to see or areas you might have missed if you traveled another way. Plus, the excursions allow you to experience local cultures, traditions, and activities.

One of those activities is kayaking. Imagine kayaking through Kenai Fjords National Park or Glacier Bay. The icy waters in each are packed with marine life. So, as you are paddling along, you may come across a whale, sea lion, seal, or sea otter. A puffin, kittiwake, or gull may land on one end of your kayak.

I recommend having your camera ready to photograph everything you see while participating in any activity while on vacation in Alaska. After all, you will want to remember every moment forever.
