Hot Water Beach on the Coromandel Peninsula in New Zealand – An Amazing Destination for Celebrating National Beach Day

Hot Water Beach is one of the best beaches to visit for family vacations. There are volcanoes near this beach. And those volcanoes created large underground reservoirs that are now filled with extremely hot water. The water slowly seeps to the surface, still feeling quite hot when it gets there.

Your family can easily access these hot springs during low tide. I recommend taking a shovel with you, so you can create your own mini spa in the middle of paradise.

Oh, and the seasons in New Zealand are opposite what we have here in the US. Therefore, you will love a family vacation there on National Beach Day. Since it will be winter, the hot water at this beach will feel amazing!

Byron Bay in Australia

Surfing is popular at this beach in Australia. In between waves, your family can wander through the bookstores. There are plenty of cafes for grabbing a bite to eat. And pubs for when you need a pint or two.

I recommend visiting with your family during the Byron Bay Bluesfest. Yes, it will be more crowded. But the experience, and music, are worth the memories you will make with your family.

Snorkeling is a popular family activity at this beach. Make sure you take your gear, so you can be out amongst the turtles, dolphins, and whale sharks.

Punalu’u Beach is an amazing beach to visit for National Beach Day. However, there really is no bad time to visit paradise on any of the Hawaiian Islands during a family vacation.

Diani Beach in Kenya

Diani Beach is more than twelve miles long. Palm trees line the sandy shoreline and provide just enough shade.

One Alii Beach Park

The sandy shoreline at One Alii Beach Park might be small, but that doesn’t mean this beach in Molokai isn’t worthy of a visit! You will find this beach in Kaunakakai, which is the largest town on the island of Molokai. Green open spaces surround the soft sand, so there is plenty of room to spread out and enjoy a sunny day. The water is not crystal clear at this beach, so you may or may not want to go in for a swim. If you decide not to, you can always do a little fishing instead. Fishing is one of the most popular activities at this beach destination.

Sandy Beach

Sandy Beach is one of the best beaches for swimming on the island of Molokai. Swimming and snorkeling are amazing at this beach, thanks to the reef. While a day at this beach is fantastic, your family’s favorite part will be the journey to reach this destination. The road that leads to this beach is full of curves. Plus, it is quite narrow. But the views are worth every challenging minute of the drive!

Papohaku Beach

On the west end of the island of Molokai, you will find Papohaku Beach. This beach on Molokai is three miles long. This is not the best beach for swimming due to the surf. But if your family has some experience in bodyboarding, you can catch a few waves during your visit. It is best not to walk around barefoot on this beach. There are pieces of wire and metal in the sand still from World War II. You will also discover thorns from the Kiawe trees in the sand. Those thorns are really sharp and hurt if stepped on.

Halawa Beach Park

This park is home to two of Molokai’s best beaches. Those beaches are Kama’alaea Beach and Kawili Beach. As long as the water is calm, these are fabulous beaches for swimming. However, when the surf is strong, dangerous rip currents occur. During the winter months, this is one of the best places to watch surfers out in the ocean.

These are the best beaches on Molokai. Only a couple of the beaches on Molokai have restrooms and drinking water. Therefore, your family must be prepared to take lots of water, or other liquids, with you when you decide to spend any time at most of the beaches in Molokai. Sunscreen is another must at the best beaches in Molokai because the sun can be very strong, especially during the summer months.

Halepalaoa Beach

This is one of the most secluded beaches in Lanai. The only way to reach this beach is via a 4×4 on a bumpy trail or by boat. Your time on this beach in Lanai can be spent wondering what it was like when the old Club Lanai Hotel was located there. This is the perfect destination if your family is craving solitude during this time away from home.

Polihua Beach

Polihua Beach is another one of the secluded beaches in Lanai. The journey to this beach is treacherous. So, your family probably shouldn’t go if anyone is afraid of heights or dangerous twists and turns on the road. However, if you can make it to this beach, you will all be rewarded with gorgeous views. Just don’t try swimming at this beach once you get there. The currents are really strong, and no one is around for miles to offer assistance.

Hulopo’e Bay Beach Park

Hulopo’e Bay Beach Park is the most popular beach on the island of Lanai. You will find this beach directly behind the Four Seasons Resort Lanai at Manele Bay. It is the easiest beach to get to, so everyone seems to arrive there on really nice days. Thankfully, this island doesn’t get packed like the other islands. So, even on a busy day, you won’t feel like this beach in Lanai is overcrowded.

As you can see, there aren’t as many beaches in Lanai as the other Hawaiian Islands. But the beaches located on Lanai are filled with potential. As long as your family doesn’t mind climbing into a 4×4 for a little adventure to reach some of these beaches in Lanai, your possibilities for a day in the sun are endless.

Anini Beach Park

One of the longest reefs in Hawaii is located at Anini Beach Park. The reef is approximately two miles long. The water at this beach in Kauai is calm, so it is perfect for swimming. Just make sure your family doesn’t swim beyond the reef because the currents get stronger on that side. Your family can watch the surfers who do venture past the reef.

Kalapaki Beach

Spending the day at the beach with your family can be challenging if everyone wants to do something different. At Kalapaki Beach, though, it is possible to keep everyone happy with numerous activities. A day at this beach in Kauai can include swimming, paddleboarding, surfing, and beach volleyball.

Ke’e Beach

The sunsets at Ke’e Beach are spectacular, so we must add this location to your Kauai vacation itinerary. I recommend you arrive early to get a little snorkeling in before the sun sets. This is also an excellent starting point for many area hikes. So, we can easily plan an entire day around this beach.

Mahaulepu Beach

Mahaulepu Beach is located on private land, but everyone is welcome to use it until six every evening. Kite surfing is popular at this beach, so you will almost always see people out in the water. If you are tired of swimming, you can change course and take your family on a hike. The Mahaulepu Beach Heritage Trail is quite popular. But if that is too much, you can simply explore the nearby coves.

Tunnels Beach

It is best to visit Tunnels Beach during the summer because that is when the water is nice and calm. However, if you do happen to vacation in Kauai during the winter, you can still visit for the stunning scenery. The lush rainforest is the perfect backdrop for selfies. And if you happen to go swimming, your family may want to check out the caverns and caves underneath the water. They were all formed from lava tubes.

Poipu Beach Park

Surprisingly, Kauai has a beach that is perfect for both swimmers and surfers. The west side of Poipu Beach Park has a cove filled with calm water. The other side of the beach offers stronger currents that are best for surfing. In between both sections, your family will have the chance to see monk seals sunning themselves on the sand. When you get tired of the sun and sand for the day, you can easily head over to the Shops at Kukui’ula for a shopping adventure.

Kalalau Beach

If you have an active family who loves to hike, Kalalau Beach might make your list. This beach in Kauai is difficult to get to. Your family will need to hike for eleven miles along the Kalalau Trail to reach the beach area. The hike can be strenuous, but worth it for this once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Just think of all the memories you will have from this one family vacation!

Punalu’u Beach on the Big Island

Punalu’u Beach is also known as Black Sand Beach. It is one of the most popular colored sand beaches in Hawaii. The black sand on this beach was created from tiny fragments of lava. Basically, as soon as hot magma hits the ocean water, the magma cools instantly. Once the magma is cooled, it shatters into what you see as black sand. If you want to see Hawaiian green sea turtles during your family vacation, this is the beach you must have on your to-do list. The turtles prefer the black sand beaches because the darker sand retains the heat.

Papakōlea Beach on the Big Island

Papakōlea Beach is covered in green sand. It is one of only four green sand beaches in the entire world. The green color comes from a mineral called olivine, which is also called the Hawaiian Diamond. Olivine is one of the components of lava. Getting to this green sand beach in Hawaii is not easy. You must walk for approximately three miles through lava fields to reach this green-colored sand.

Halawa Beach Park on Molokai

Halawa Beach Park is one of the colored sand beaches in Hawaii that has both white and black sand. The swirls of color are incredible to walk around. However, I know you will prefer finding the perfect spot to take pictures of both the sand and your family.

Papohaku Beach on Molokai

If your kids have been dreaming of walking on orange sand, they can if you happen to take a family vacation in Molokai! Papohaku Beach is full of orange sand. This secluded beach is perfect to visit at any time, but I prefer going there at sunset. The soft glow of the sand under the setting sun is a memory you will cherish with your family forever.

Wainapanapa Beach on Maui

Wainapanapa Beach is one of the colored sand beaches with a black sand beach in Hawaii. However, the black sand on this beach is made up of smooth lava pebbles. When your family is not walking along the sand, you may want to explore the nearby lava tubes. There is also a blowhole nearby, as well as a boardwalk you can wander along.

Kaihalulu Beach on Maui

There are very few red-sand beaches in the world, but Kaihalulu Beach is one of them. Your family must tackle an overgrown trail on the side of a cliff to reach this red-sand beach. However, the journey is worth every minute once you reach your destination.

Nanakuli Beach Park is one of the best beaches on Oahu, especially if you have a family that loves being active. Swimming on the southern end of this beach is amazing. That is excellent news if your family loves to surf.

Bellows Field Beach Park

Jellyfish are everywhere in the water at Bellows Field Beach Park, so you must be cautious when you are swimming or surfing. A wetsuit is recommended if you choose to enter the water. One of the newest beaches on Oahu is Ala Moana Beach. This beach was created approximately sixty years ago when sand was dumped in this park. This beach in Oahu is on the smaller side. But since the water is nice and calm, thanks to the outer reef, it is the perfect place to swim. The best part is mostly locals spend time at this beach, so it won’t be as crowded during your visit.

Lanikai Beach

One of the most popular beaches in Oahu is Lanikai Beach. The reef keeps the water nice and calm. When your family is not swimming, you may all find yourselves participating in a little windsurfing, snorkeling, or sailing. There are also two islands nearby, and they are both filled with wildlife. It is best to arrive at this beach early in the morning. Due to its location in a residential neighborhood, parking is often limited.

Waikiki Beach

Almost everyone has heard of Waikiki Beach, which is why it will probably be close to the top of your family’s list of things to do during your vacation in Oahu. This beach in Oahu is one of many beaches that connect on this island. If you want to spend a lot of your time at this beach, I will usually recommend staying at one of the nearby resorts. There are many reasons for this. But the main reason is there is nothing better than walking only a few steps from your resort and being at the beach in no time at all.

Sunset Beach

The summer months are perfect for swimming and snorkeling at Sunset Beach. The winter months bring changes to this beach in Oahu as the waves come crashing in. If you happen to visit during the winter, you will find yourself watching many of the professional surfers competing out in the water. No matter when you visit this beach on Oahu, your family will most likely spot a celebrity or two.

Kailua Beach

There is something for every member of your family at Kailua Beach. The water activities include swimming, sailing, surfing, snorkeling, and diving. Those family members who do not want to spend time in the water may prefer being on the volleyball court. This beach in Oahu is never too crowded on weekdays, so it may be best to plan your visit accordingly.

Waimea Bay

The waves at Waimea Bay reach heights of twenty-five feet during the winter months. Therefore, you won’t want to plan on swimming during that time of the year. However, you can watch professional surfers, as they attempt to catch the perfect wave. The water does calm down during the summer months. Kapalua Beach almost always comes first on the list of the best beaches in Maui. The calm water is perfect for swimming. The palm trees offer a shady respite from the sun. And the restrooms ensure you can stay at the beach from sun up until sundown. However, those aren’t all the reasons why locals and tourists alike love this beach in Maui. Many people arrive at this beach to do a little scuba diving, boogie boarding, and even hiking along the Kapalua Coastal Trail. But the best time to visit this beach is during the winter months. This is when your family can watch the whales as they migrate to the deeper water surrounding the island.

Kaihalulu Beach

If your kids want to see a beach filled with red sand, you must check out Kaihalulu Beach. This is one of the secret beaches in Maui, and it is actually located on private property. Therefore, if you plan to see this beach, you must obtain permission before walking down the road. The trail leading to the beach is slippery, so it is best to wear sturdy walking shoes for this family adventure.

Ho’okipa Beach Park

Surfing families will want to venture over to Ho’okipa Beach Park to catch some waves during a vacation in Maui. The waves are normally the most powerful in the afternoon. So, if you are just learning how to surf, you may want to arrive earlier in the day. It is not recommended to go swimming at this beach, due to the strong currents. If you do not surf, you may still want to check out this beach because numerous green sea turtles hang out on the sand.

Honolua Bay Beach

Swimming and snorkeling in the marine area of Honolua Bay Beach are amazing. However, there are multiple rocks underneath the water, so you will want to be cautious. When your family is done swimming, you must walk over to the lookout point. That is where you will see gorgeous views of the bay.

Keawakapu Beach

If your family wants to avoid crowds during your Maui vacation, you may want to consider spending a little time at Keawakapu Beach. This is one of the small beaches on Maui and hardly anyone chooses to spend a day there. The water is perfect for swimming. But it will be the snorkeling over by the reef that will capture your attention the most. And if your kids are a little more adventurous, they can try to do a little stand-up paddleboarding before you head back to your resort.

Hamoa Beach

The sand on Hamoa Beach is actually gray, thanks to the black lava cliffs that surround it. The sand is also surrounded by lush vegetation, so your family will feel a relaxed vibe from the moment you arrive. Plus, you can all do everything from swimming and snorkeling to surfing at this beach. Just keep in mind that the currents can get extremely powerful at times, especially during the winter months.

Kaanapali Beach

This is one of the best beaches in Maui if you are looking for a beach near your resort or hotel during your family vacation. A paved path leads directly to Kaanapali Beach from many of those accommodations. When you are not in the water swimming, snorkeling, windsurfing, and parasailing, you can go shopping at Whalers Village.

Olowalu Beach

Olowalu Beach is also called Turtle Reef because so many green sea turtles hang out there. There is a very diverse reef system at this beach. That reef makes it the perfect destination for snorkeling. When your family enters the water, you will have the opportunity to see at least twenty different marine species.

Makena Beach

Makena Beach is one of the larger beaches on Maui. The massive cliffs surrounding the beach create a picturesque scene. Once you add in the large shore break, you will instantly see why it is the number one spot for body surfing, body boarding, and skim boarding. The waves are quite powerful at this beach in Maui. So, it is best not to enter the water there unless your family members are experienced swimmers or surfers.

There are almost too many beaches in Maui to count. However, these are the best beaches in Maui, and I know you will find a favorite during your family vacation.

National Flip Flop Day – The Best Beaches to Visit on a Family Vacation

Assateague Island

There is nothing better than spending a family vacation on this beach with the wild horses. When you are not swimming, kayaking, or driving a vehicle on the sand, you can watch the horses from a distance. There are two main herds of horses. One herd lives on the Maryland side of the island. The others are on the Virginia side.

You can’t ride those horses. However, there are horses available to ride if you want to see the beach from a different perspective.

Bahamas

You can’t deny that the beaches in the Bahamas are magnificent. There are so many beaches to choose from depending on the island you are visiting. The soft sand on Paradise Island is perfect for families like yours. Although Pink Sand Beach on Harbour Island will beckon to you as well.

And the beach over on The Exumas might be the best one yet. This is due to the swimming pigs that live on the island.

South Padre Island, Texas

You can never go wrong when visiting a beach on South Padre Island. There are multiple family activities on these beaches. So, you will have something to keep everyone from getting bored each day. Time in the water can be spent kiteboarding, swimming, and sailing. On land, you can walk along the shoreline collecting shells. Or you can build a sandcastle or two.

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

It shouldn’t be surprising that Myrtle Beach, South Carolina has made it to the list of best beaches to visit on a family vacation. This is one of the most popular beaches for school vacations. The boardwalk and promenade add to the excitement of spending days at the beach. Your entire family can ride the SkyWheel, play mini golf, and play a video game or two. Add in the live entertainment and fireworks and your kids may never want to leave.

San Diego, California

The soft white sand on San Diego beaches will draw your kids there day after day. And yet, there is plenty of family activities for those days you don’t want to be in the water. When you are not swimming or building a sandcastle, you might find yourselves over in Balboa Park. There are 16 museums, as well as the San Diego Zoo at the park. LEGOLAND is not too far away either. Basically, this is an excellent beach to visit if you want options in between sun-filled beach days.

Cancun, Mexico

The beaches in Cancun are quite welcoming to families. Playa Maroma and Playa Delfines offer snorkeling, swimming, and dolphin watching. If you want to skip the crowds during your family vacation, I recommend heading over to Isla Mujeres. The beaches are not as crowded on that incredible island.

Kauai, Hawaii

Poipu Beach Park is the best beach on the island of Kauai. This beach is divided in half by a sandbar. One side of the sandbar offers shallow water. This is perfect for little kids and those who really don’t want to spend their day swimming. The water on the other side is deeper. This is perfect for those kids who want to bodyboard.

Maui, Hawaii

Down on the southern end of Maui, you will find family friendly beaches like Wailea Beach. The water is calmer at this end of the island. The calm water is best for families who love to swim and snorkel. Families who love to surf will prefer the beaches on the northern shoreline. Surfing and windsurfing are best at Kanaha Beach and Ho’okipa Beach.

Fiji

There are almost too many islands to count in Fiji, which means there are way more beaches to choose from.
