Agatha Christie published her first novel in 1920. It was set in a fictitious village called Styles St. Mary. However, what you may not know is that the village of Styles St. Mary was inspired by destinations in the West Country. Now, this wasn’t the only time destinations around the world would inspire Agatha Christie’s mysteries. If you, or anyone else in your family, love reading Agatha Christie mysteries, you may want to plan a vacation exploring some of the destinations she was inspired by. Today, I am going to share some of the destinations that inspired Agatha Christie’s mysteries.

Destinations that Inspired Agatha Christie’s Mysteries

South of France

The Mystery of the Blue Train featured the South of France. In her book, Agatha Christie sent her character, Detective Poirot, on Le Train Bleu in Paris. In the story, the train went down to the Riviera, passing towns like Menton and St. Tropez.

Head down to Menton by rail on your own family vacation. Then let your imagination take you back to this mystery. You can even dine at a restaurant called Le Train Bleu before you depart the city of Paris.

The Nile in Egypt

Destinations that Inspired Agatha Christie's Mysteries - Ship on the Nile River

One of Agatha Christie’s most popular mysteries was Death on the Nile. In this book, she used the Nile River as inspiration for Detective Poirot’s case involving a trio of deaths.

You can head out on your own cruise of the Nile to see many of the ancient sites along the shoreline. However, if you are not a fan of water, you can always stay on land. Agatha Christie did as she was writing this mystery.

Istanbul in Turkey

The city of Istanbul is where Detective Poirot enjoys a little time before heading back to London on an exclusive train. Of course, his train ride is anything but normal with suspicious noises being heard from a nearby compartment. It isn’t surprising the train ends up stopping in Yugoslav while everything gets sorted out.

Agatha Christie used her experience on the Orient Express to write this mystery novel.

The Swiss Alps

Agatha Christie’s The Labors of Hercules, The Arcadian Deer, and The Erymanthian Boar all took place in the Swiss Alps. The author used all the real-life destinations to create her own fictitious towns and cities. All those fictional destinations claim the same breathtaking panoramic views just like the real ones.

The Caribbean

Destinations that Inspired Agatha Christie's Mysteries - Paradise Beach in Barbados

Anyone who is a fan of the Miss Marple mysteries will know that they all were inspired by the Caribbean. Okay, yes, the island of St. Honore is complete fiction. But it was inspired by Agatha Christie’s real-life visit to Barbados.

Now, you never know when you might discover a mystery while on vacation, just like Agatha Christie wrote about after different destinations inspired her mysteries.
