Planning a memorable family vacation where everyone can enjoy themselves can be a challenge. But in 2025, the best destinations for multigenerational travel are making it easier than ever to create unforgettable experiences for the whole family. Today, I am sharing some family friendly vacation destinations with you. These destinations offer sun-soaked beaches, cultural experiences, and outdoor adventures. Basically, something for everyone in your family to enjoy, while creating lifelong memories. Let’s start exploring the top destinations that cater to multigenerational travelers.

Best Destinations for Multigenerational Travel in 2025: Top Family Friendly Getaways

Alaska – Best Destination for Multigenerational Travel in 2025

Best Destinations for Multigenerational Travel in 2025: Top Family Friendly Getaways - Family Near a Glacier in Alaska

One of the best destinations for multigenerational travel in 2025 is Alaska. A vacation in Alaska promises adventures filled with discovery, shared experiences, and lasting memories.

There are quite a few options for how your family experiences this state. You can simply fly to one of the major cities. Or you can cruise to different ports.

If you choose the latter, I recommend small ship cruises. These cruise ships can reach areas where the larger cruise ships can’t reach. Plus, your family will receive more personalized experience options like kayaking near glaciers and guided shore excursions.

Other activities to consider during your family vacation in Alaska include dog sledding, wildlife viewing in Denali and Kenai Fjords National Parks, and guided tours of glaciers.

Another fabulous way to explore Alaska is to take a ride on the Alaska Railroad. This train travels almost five hundred miles throughout the state’s spectacular landscape. Your family can disembark at the numerous stops to participate in activities.

Check out these bucket list destinations in Alaska for your next family vacation.

Galapagos Islands

The Galapagos Islands are a dream destination for many travelers. So, if you are traveling with multiple generations, you might as well choose a dream destination for creating memories!

Once-in-a-lifetime adventures can be experienced during a vacation in the Galapagos Islands. Plus, I can help arrange family friendly and eco-friendly tours for your multigenerational vacation.

Consider a visit to the Charles Darwin Research Station to learn about conservation as a family. Island hopping excursions allow everyone to see more of the islands, while exploring diverse ecosystems together.

Of course, you won’t want to skip snorkeling with sea lions and spending time with giant tortoises while on vacation with your family in the Galapagos Islands.

Use my travel guide to the Galapagos Islands for your multigenerational vacation.

Lisbon, Portugal

Best Destinations for Multigenerational Travel in 2025: Top Family Friendly Getaways - Tram 28 in Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon is a city that offers charm, cultural activities, and family friendly activities. Which is why it is one of the best destinations for multigenerational travel in 2025.

I recommend starting with a ride on Tram 28 to check out the city’s neighborhoods. This is an excellent way to learn where restaurants and attractions are located throughout the city. After all, you never know when you will see something interesting to return to later.

The whole family will love spending time at Oceanário de Lisboa. This is one of the largest aquariums in Europe. You should plan on spending at least a few hours there, as you all check out the marine life.

A family friendly Fado show is an excellent way to listen to traditional Portuguese music during your vacation.

Banff, Canada

You won’t need to travel too far from the US to experience one of the best family-friendly vacation destinations in 2025. Banff, Canada offers year-round family fun. And this year, there are more family oriented outdoor activities within Banff National Park.

The entire family will love riding the Banff Gondola. Check out incredible views during your ride. There are also interactive exhibits that will capture everyone’s attention.

Everyone should be able to walk the trails at Johnston Canyon. These are easy scenic walks that are ideal for families.

If you want to see this area of Canada from a different perspective, go canoeing on Lake Louise. No matter what you do during your family vacation in Banff, keep an eye out for bears, elk, and mountain goats. Wildlife is everywhere in this area, so it is almost guaranteed you will see something.

Sydney, Australia

Sydney, Australia is one of the best destinations for multigenerational travel in 2025. Although, you can visit anywhere in this country with your family and have an amazing time.

If you want to start your vacation in Sydney on a more relaxed note, I recommend taking a Sydney Harbour cruise. This is an excellent way to see the city’s sights from a different perspective. Plus, you get to relax after your long flight.

While younger kids may not appreciate the cultural aspects of the Sydney Opera House, you should still take the time for a behind the scenes tour. If a performance is happening during your visit, the grandparents can enjoy it one night. Or the grandparents can watch the kids while the parents attend.

A day at the beach is a must while on a family vacation in Australia. Bondi Beach is one of the best beaches for families. While you can spend the entire day on the sand building sandcastles, there are other options. Consider a coastal walk. Or take the family-friendly surfing lessons that are offered.

Check out these other family friendly activities in Australia for your vacation.

Yellowstone National Park

Family Walking Around the Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone National Park

There are sixty-three national parks to visit in the US. However, Yellowstone National Park is one of the best family friendly vacation destinations. This is because there are plenty of activities your family can do outdoors during your vacation.

I recommend taking one of the wildlife safaris to see bison, elk, and bears. The guides will ensure you don’t miss any of the wildlife that lives within this national park.

The kids will love the engaging activities offered with the junior ranger programs. And parents and grandparents will love learning along with the kids or sharing the knowledge they already have.

Some hikes in Yellowstone National Park may be too difficult for older adults or those with limited mobility. Thankfully, you can drive to sights like the Old Faithful Geyser. You will need to time your visit properly though, or you will miss the eruption of this geyser.

Costa Rica – Unique Best Destination for Multigenerational Travel in 2025

Eco-adventures and nature-filled experiences will bring your family closer during a vacation in Costa Rica. The activity that should be at the top of your list during your family vacation in Costa Rica is visiting Arenal Volcano National Park. You can hike along the trails there before soaking in the natural hot springs.

Depending on the time of year you visit, your family may be able to witness sea turtle nesting in Tortuguero National Park. This unforgettable moment happens between July and October each year. However, peak activity occurs between July and August.

Guided wildlife tours are available in the Monteverde Cloud Forest. Ziplining adventures are another option in this area of Costa Rica.

The kids will beg for time at the beach during your Costa Rica vacation. The beach Manuel Antonio is your best option. The kids can play in the gentle waves, while the adults relax on the sand.

Barcelona, Spain

Is your family searching for diverse activities for your multigenerational vacation in 2025? If you are, I recommend adding Barcelona, Spain to your list of places to visit. Barcelona offers a vibrant mix of architecture, culture, and beachside fun.

Adults can wander around Park Güell to see the whimsical designs of Gaudi. The kids can climb and play during this time, so they won’t be bored as the adults marvel at what they see.

When everyone gets hungry, I recommend going to La Boqueria Market. This market has a lively atmosphere. And you can try many of the local delicacies, which ensures you will no longer be hungry. Oh, and those samples may get your kids to try new foods they wouldn’t try back home.

If your family has the energy to stay out later one night, head over to the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc. The light and water show at this fountain will captivate the attention of everyone in your family.

There will be plenty of time for you to lounge on a beach while on a family vacation in Barcelona. However, the most family friendly beach is Barceloneta Beach. So, you may want to choose to visit that one the most during your vacation.

Check out the best things to do in Barcelona during your multigenerational vacation.

Hawaii

Multigenerational Family on the Beach While on Vacation

All the Hawaiian Islands are perfect for family vacations. However, it is important you decide which Hawaiian Island is perfect for your multigenerational vacation in 2025. I usually recommend Maui and Oahu. But we can discuss which islands will best fit your family’s needs.

Pearl Harbor Memorial is usually one of the favorite attractions for a Hawaiian family vacation. This tour will share many invaluable insights into that historical time.

Interactive experiences showcasing Hawaiian traditions can be seen at the Polynesian Cultural Center. And there is no better way to explore the Molokini Crater than going on a snorkeling adventure.

Surfing is a popular activity in Waikiki, and the rest of Hawaii. Adventurous members of your family will want to take lessons, while the others sit back and watch.

Rome, Italy

Imagine visiting a destination where you can experience the past each day, while enjoying delicious cuisine in between each stop. It is completely possible when you choose to take your multigenerational vacation in Rome, Italy. Plus, this best family friendly vacation destination promises enhanced guided tours and family friendly museums for 2025.

I recommend having me secure your spot for a Colosseum tour while I am planning your multigenerational vacation. This will ensure you can skip the line when you arrive. And you will get to enjoy an interactive tour filled with gladiator stories that will thrill each family member.

I can do the same for Vatican City, so you don’t spend most of your time waiting in line. This will give you more time to admire the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica.

A bike ride through the Villa Borghese Gardens will allow you to see a beautiful spot in the city. I recommend bringing a picnic lunch with you to extend your time in these gardens.

There are plenty of cooking classes you can take while on a family vacation in Rome. If your kids are old enough, you can all take one together to learn how to make fresh pasta.

London, England

Harry Potter fans will love going on vacation to London, England. So, if your kids are hesitant to spend time with you and their grandparents, tell them you are going on a Harry Potter adventure. Their moods will change dramatically. Especially when you have me schedule a Harry Potter Studio Tour for your family.

I can also arrange tours of London, so you can all see Big Ben, London Eye, Buckingham Palace, and Kensington Gardens. Over at the Tower of London, take the interactive tours to ensure history is brought to life for your family.

A day of rest can be experienced in Hyde Park. You can all enjoy a family picnic or go paddle boating.

Orlando, Florida – Popular Best Destination for Multigenerational Travel in 2025

You must have known that Orlando would be on this list of best destinations for multigenerational travel in 2025. After all, it is home to Disney World and Universal Studios.

There are new attractions and activities coming to both these theme parks in 2025. Grandparents will feel nostalgic, as they take the grandkids on the rides they took you on when you were little. Teens will love the thrilling ride options. And you will all stand and wave, as characters walk by during the parades.

Over at Discovery Cove, you can swim with dolphins and snorkel in tropical lagoons. Creating memories will be easy when you take the time to visit with the marine life at Discovery Cove.

There are plenty of nearby attractions to consider when you take a family vacation in Orlando. Kennedy Space Center is one of those attractions. This is an excellent option for anyone who dreams of flying to the moon one day.

Check out these amazing things to do in Orlando during your next multigenerational vacation.

When it comes to planning a memorable vacation that caters to all ages, the best destinations for multigenerational travel in 2025 offer something for everyone. These destinations create opportunities for families to bond, learn, and relax together. Whether your family prefers cultural experiences, outdoor adventures, or simply soaking up the sun on the beach, these family friendly vacation spots ensure every generation has an unforgettable experience. I recommend considering these remarkable destinations to create lasting memories that will be cherished for years to come.

Father’s Day will be here before you know it. Do you know what you’re getting your father this year? If yet another tie just isn’t going to cut it, why not give him the greatest gift of all. A vacation with his family! Plan a vacation that allows your dad to explore his passions and interests in depth. As an added bonus, your entire family can spend time together creating memories you will all remember forever. Today, I am sharing a couple of Father’s Day vacation ideas that will have all of you talking, laughing, and creating memories that matter.

Father’s Day Vacation Ideas: Create Memories with Family

A Round of Golf at a World-Class Resort

Father's Day Vacation Ideas: Create Memories with Family - Family on a Golf Course

If your dad is a fan of playing golf, chances are he just doesn’t need another box of golf balls. Instead, embark on a family vacation that will put his golf skills to the test!

Stay in the US for a world-class round of golf at storied resorts like Sea Pines Resort at Hilton Head or the Ritz-Carlton Dove Mountain in Arizona. We can chat about other golf resorts in areas your whole family will want to visit for this memorable vacation celebrating Father’s Day as well.

And if you are looking to combine dad’s love of golf with a vacation that’s more international in flavor? The sun-drenched resorts of the Caribbean are calling your name. The One & Only Ocean Club in the Bahamas is an excellent choice. It offers a luxurious vibe smack-dab in the middle of paradise.

And of course, the legendary golf courses of Scotland would make an excellent family vacation. Or tee time at St. Andrews? Now that’s a vacation memory that would stay with dad forever.

Consider these other fun multigenerational getaways for your next trip.

Drinking Guinness Straight from the Source – A Father’s Day Vacation Idea for the Books!

Father's Day Vacation Ideas: Create Memories with Family - Entrance to Guinness in Ireland

Don’t buy your dad a case of his favorite beer. Instead, take him to the iconic Irish brewery where it’s produced. If your father is a fan of this dark, pungent beer, he’ll find a tour of the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin absolutely fascinating.

The Guinness story began in 1759. This is when Arthur Guinness signed a 9,000-year lease at St. Jame’s Gate Brewery. Your father can try his hand at pouring the perfect pint of this rich, creamy stout on your tour. Afterwards, grab some hearty “dad grub” at one of Dublin’s lively pubs. This is one culinary-focused Father’s Day vacation idea that has “Dad” written all over it.

Check out these amazing things to do during a family vacation in Ireland.

Exploring the Galapagos in Depth

Father's Day Vacation Ideas: Create Memories with Family - Galapagos Islands

Is your dad more of the outdoorsy type? Then consider a family vacation of a lifetime in The Galapagos. These islands are six hundred miles off the coast of Ecuador. The islands are perfect for nature lovers.

When you choose this Father’s Day vacation idea, you need to be ready to snorkel with penguins, spot giant Galapagos tortoises, and swim with the only marine iguana species in the world.

While the Galapagos is quite remote, that’s what makes exploring the islands so fun. Respected tour companies like Lindblad Expeditions (who partners with National Geographic), Celebrity Cruises, and Silversea Cruises all offer cruising journeys through the Galapagos.

Snorkel with dear old dad during the day and enjoy a glass of wine (or two!) on board in the evening. Now that’s the perfect way to explore nature and create memories to celebrate Father’s Day.

See what other fun activities are waiting for your family during a vacation in the Galapagos Islands.

These are three of the top vacation ideas for Father’s Day. There are many other options though and I can discuss them with you, as I am personalizing your next family vacation.

So, are you ready to whisk your pops off on a vacation you know he’d love with one of these Father’s Day vacation ideas?

Are you dreaming of a family vacation in paradise? There are so many amazing tropical islands you can visit that your family will love. However, I recommend the tropical islands of Antigua and Barbuda. These islands are located in the heart of the Caribbean. They are about a thousand miles to the east of Jamaica. And half that distance from Trinidad on the coast of South America. If you’re dreaming of a tropical island vacation, it may be time to consider traveling to Antigua and Barbuda! Today, I am sharing a couple things you should consider doing when you choose Antigua and Barbuda travel for your next family vacation.

Dreaming of Antigua and Barbuda Travel for Your Family Vacation?

Antigua Travel

The island of Antigua was born out of the sea by a volcano about 30 million years ago. Therefore, this is a young island in geologic time.

Reefs formed on the northern flank of this volcanic island. Therefore, the greater part of Antigua is low lying and is composed of limestone rock.

The highest point of Antigua is 1,319 feet in the south-west and is called Boggy Peak.

Antigua is 108 square miles. The population of this island is almost 80,000.

Since there are so many people on this island, your family will never have a problem finding something to do. This is why so many people like yourself choose Antigua travel over Barbuda.

Things to Do in Antigua

Visit Nelson’s Dockyard National Park – One of the Best Things to Do While Traveling to Antigua and Barbuda

Dreaming of Antigua and Barbuda Travel for Your Family Vacation - Nelson's Dockyard National Park in Antigua

Nelson’s Dockyard National Park is one of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites. This 18th century British naval base is still in use today.

I recommend exploring the museum to learn more about the maritime past of Antigua. Then head out on a hike on one of the trails within Shirley Heights. Those hiking trails offer gorgeous panoramic views of the island.

Relax on a Beach – Much Easier in Antigua than Barbuda During Travel!

There are 365 beaches on Antigua. This is quite a few more beaches than Barbuda has for your family vacation.

Dickenson Bay is the perfect spot if your family loves beach activities and cocktails. Half Moon Bay is known for its pink sand. And Darkwood Beach is one of the best beaches for snorkeling.

I recommend doing a little beach hopping, so you can find your favorite beach in Antigua for your family vacation.

Here are the top beaches for Antigua and Barbuda travel.

Explore St. John’s

The capital city of Antigua is St. John’s. This beautiful city is full of historical buildings, St. John’s Cathedral, and local markets.

I recommend shopping in the local markets. They are also the perfect place to purchase fresh local produce and duty-free items.

You won’t find as large of a city when you travel to Barbuda, so if you want to experience this area, you must visit Antigua.

Foods you must try while traveling to Antigua and Barbuda.

Barbuda Travel

Barbuda became separated from Antigua by about 28 miles when the sea-levels of the world rose considerably in about 10,000 BC. This island is 62 square miles in size.

The limestone Highlands of Barbuda rise to only 125 feet. It is relatively unpopulated with only approximately 1,300 people.

Today, parts of Barbuda are geologically flooded, which forms interesting lagoons. This island may be the largest breeding and nesting colony of the Magnificent Frigate Bird in the world.

Barbuda supports a tremendous diversity of native habitats. Reef-fringed Barbuda may be one of the best kept ecological secrets in the West Indies. The island’s rugged scenery, beautiful beaches, (one at least 12 miles long), lagoons, and abundant wildlife may be a resource as valuable as its fisheries.

Traveling to Barbuda is perfect if you want solitude and plenty of time to relax. Of course, you can combine travel to Antigua and Barbuda to get the best of both worlds during your family vacation!

Things to Do in Barbuda

Visit the Frigate Bird Sanctuary – Unique Experience in Barbuda Not Antigua Travel

Dreaming of Antigua and Barbuda Travel for Your Family Vacation - Male Frigate Bird in Barbuda

The Frigate Bird Sanctuary is located within Codrington Lagoon. This sanctuary is one of the world’s largest nesting colonies for frigate birds.

Take a boat tour through the lagoon to see these fabulous birds up close.

Have Fun on Pink Sand Beach

There may not be as many beaches on Barbuda, but that doesn’t mean you won’t have fun in the sand during your family vacation.

Over at Pink Sand Beach, your family can have plenty of adventures. Walk along the crushed coral shoreline. Snorkel in the crystal-clear water to see marine life. Or take a scenic boat tour to learn more about the area.

There is so much happening in Antigua and Barbuda. You can do it all or do as little as you want during your family vacation.

Check out these other tropical destinations for your next family vacation!

Have you always wondered what it was like to travel like a VIP? Well, traveling like a VIP is a lot easier and, in many cases, more affordable than most realize. There are VIP experiences available all over the place. You just need to discuss it with your travel advisor during the planning process of your family vacation. Once your travel advisor knows you want to experience VIP status, they can make arrangements for all your travel experiences.

Travel Like a VIP for Your Family Vacation

Before You Travel Like a VIP

Work With a Travel Advisor

Travel Like a VIP for Your Family Vacation - Tracy at Elite Travel Journeys

It’s probably going to sound like the easy answer but use a travel advisor. This is what we do day in and day out full time.

We know who to talk to, where to get the best rooms, and the best service. Yes, there are times we get the best rates. But that’s not the real reason for using a travel advisor. When you use a travel advisor, you are getting their experience, connections, and resources.

A quality travel advisor is someone who is constantly growing their connections with industry leaders. They are growing their network of destination connections that ensure you get the most authentic and exclusive experiences. A travel advisor can also help you with your visa preparations (if required) for the destinations you are headed to.

Hire a Car Service

Next up, use a car service. Don’t worry about the stress of finding parking at the airport, transferring luggage a second time on to the shuttle, or driving home after that long flight. Using a car service from your home to the airport and back again is a great way to take some of the stress out of the travel day.

Plus, it’s perfect for traveling like a VIP!

Check out these three ways you’re making vacation planning more difficult than it should be!

Flight

Flying in first class is often the automatic go to when flying VIP style. But if you’re ready to really step it up, let’s get you set up with a private plane.

If you’re not quite ready for the private plane or possibly even first class, I strongly encourage at least flying in the comfort seats. They have a few more inches of legroom. This can be a great gateway into a more VIP world, especially if you’re traveling with children and aren’t quite wanting to get them hooked on the first-class …. yet.

Your Arrival

Hire a Car Service

Travel Like a VIP for Your Family Vacation - Chauffeur Placing Luggage in Car

When you fly all night to a destination like Europe, or all day and night to destinations such as Africa or the South Pacific, the last thing you want to do is look around and try to figure out where to go.

Having a car service waiting for you is a great way to take away that frustration from flying a long way without sleep. When you step out past the luggage, there they are, with your name on a sign. They are waiting for your flight to arrive and know exactly where you are going to exit.

Trust me, having them waiting for you is such a relief after a long flight. And sometimes it is just the boost of energy you need after those flights overseas to get you pumped up to get the exploring started.

A great way to improve that travel like a VIP experience is by selecting the car service that is best suited to you. While the bus or van that has a specific pick up a spot outside of the terminal is the most economical way to travel, a car service will offer an assortment of cars to choose from.

You can select an economy car, a luxury sedan, an SUV, or even a limo depending on the location. Most important is that with each car upgrade, there are other upgrades that come along with it as well. You can even book a bit of a driving tour en-route to your hotel if that is of interest.

I like to get a bit of a lay of the land on the way to my hotel, especially following a red-eye flight. Anything that keeps me going instead of having a nap on that first day.

Gate Meet and Greet

A true travel like a VIP upgrade that I’ve discovered, and my clients are absolutely loving at many airports in Europe, is a gate meet and greet. This means they will meet you right at the gate of the plane, and escort you to and through customs. From there they help to gather the luggage and take you to the car that’s waiting.

It doesn’t need to be National Lazy Mom’s Day to hire a travel advisor to book your family vacation. See why!

During Your Vacation You Can Easily Travel Like a VIP

Choose Your Accommodation Wisely

The hotel is a great way to crank up the feeling of traveling like a VIP. Getting a room with a better view, larger room, or added amenities are all great ways to enhance the experience.

Simply staying at a better-quality hotel is an upgrade all on its own.

My personal choice for a VIP enhancement is location, location, location. When you stay in a property with a better location, you will have better access to the sites all around you.

Unless I’m in town for a conference, or just a few hours, the airport hotels aren’t typically my go to. No matter how awesome the suite is. I want to get into the heart of the city or destination. There’s nothing like stepping out the front door of your hotel and immediately being immersed into the culture, history, and story that destination has to tell.

Experience the Lives of the Locals for True VIP Status

There is nothing quite like seeing a destination through the eyes of a local. Hearing the stories of what it’s like to live there.

The tales of generations before them. Call me weird, but I geek out about knowing what the ‘real’ life is of a destination.

When I travel to Europe, I always wonder how do they haul their groceries up the streets where cars can’t get to? Or how far away is the grocery store? How often do they shop for groceries and how much do they cost?

Finding out how much it costs to live in different areas, where do the locals really live vs what are just rentals and tourist places.

Hire a Private Guide

If you want to add a VIP experience to this, let’s set you up with a private guide. This is a guide for just yourself and your family. It means that when you want to take more time somewhere you can. You’re not holding anyone else up. Have questions? Want to know more? No problem, the guide is there just for you. The only thing better than a local guide is a private local guide.

Try the Local Cuisine

The best part of any destination has to be the food. Trying new things, finding the best pubs with live music, or an amazing Michelin starred restaurant.

Having access to a concierge during your vacation or an amazing travel professional who can hook you up with great reservations to the best places to dine. When it’s the end of an exciting day of touring, there is nothing like having a plan already set for dinner rather than trying to figure it out when you’re already starting to feel a twinge of hangry.

To sum it up, the reality is – VIP is achievable for anyone, simply because it means something different to each person. Traveling like a VIP could be as simple as doing something you haven’t done before that makes this adventure more special. Or it can be as over the top as the private plane, with every detail taken care of for you. No matter what your style of traveling like a VIP is, I’m here to help make it an experience you’ll never forget.

So, are you ready to have me create a personalized family vacation itinerary for your next trip with VIP status?

Do you know what to do when you lose your luggage on a family vacation? Yes, it is an inconvenience. After all, what could be worse when you’ve arrived on your family vacation and your luggage thought they knew a better location? At first, you may think nothing could be worse. But that’s not true! So many things could be worse than losing your luggage for your family holiday. I won’t go down that rabbit hole today though. Instead, I am going to share how you can stop panicking at the thought of losing your luggage for good. And how you can still enjoy every moment of your family vacation while making memories you will cherish forever. Plus, I guarantee you will eventually laugh at how you lost your luggage on this family trip!

Losing Luggage on Your Family Vacation

The First Step to Losing Luggage

First and foremost, it happens, so just take a breath. Lost luggage happens every single day. Sometimes only for a few moments. And other times, well, honestly, the lost luggage is never found.

The key to keeping your calm is to know what not to put in checked luggage. And what to keep in your carryon.

I recommend a quality packed carryon. Then your lost luggage won’t foil your family vacation.

What to Place in Your Carryon Bag

Losing Luggage on Your Family Vacation - Young girl holding a carryon bag

Your carryon should include ALL valuables. Yep, everything that is irreplaceable, electronic, medicines (for absolute sure) and any jewelry or other costly items. This way you won’t be without anything important or irreplaceable if you happen to lose your luggage during your family trip.

It’s not a guarantee that you get to take your carryon with you, as full flights will force you to check some carry-ons. It all depends on what boarding zone you are in. However, ensuring you have a quality carryon will help alleviate some of the stress. In addition to your valuables, your carryon should also have what I call the “24-hour rule”.

The 24 Hour Rule is to pack everything you would need for twenty-four hours. This includes a change of clothes, something to sleep in, your toiletries, makeup and hairstyling accessories.

Pack a swimsuit in your carryon if you are traveling somewhere hot. Depending on your travel style, having a great outfit for dining out is a bonus as well.

When you pack this way, you have something to wear, something to wash, and something to still enjoy life with. Some destinations aren’t as easy for grabbing additional clothing, so a great 24-hour rule carryon ensures the vacation continues even when hiccups happen.

Medication absolutely needs to be in your carryon. You will risk items disappearing every time your luggage is not with you. And nothing can send a vacation sideways faster than worrying about trying to fill a prescription in another country. Medications are a hot commodity to be stolen from luggage, so keep it close at all times.

What to Do If Your Luggage is Lost or Delayed

Immediately report lost luggage to the airline. Do NOT leave the airport without filing a report. The airlines will assist in getting you reunited with your luggage, often even delivering it. But you need to have a report filed.

You also need to remember what your luggage looks like, the better the description the better. A great tip I’ve heard from colleagues is to take a picture on your cell phone (which you carry with you – never check) of your bag just before you leave. Take a picture of it open with all of the contents showing, and one with it closed up.

This way you will also be able to better list the contents for your insurance company should you need to put in a claim.

This brings me to the second thing you must do. File a report with the airline. Then contact your travel insurance provider to get a claim started.

I’m happy to chat travel insurance with all of my clients. I can’t recommend it strongly enough. Travel insurance is not for the things you plan, but rather the things that go wrong when you least expect it.

Some of the Weirdest Things I’ve Heard of with Lost Luggage

Losing Luggage on Your Family Vacation - Pile of Dirty Clothes

The travel industry is a tight industry. Us travel advisors discuss the things we’ve heard of happening to other people’s clients, so we can all help out our own clients.

Do NOT place your keys in your checked luggage. For real, this happens, and to those whose luggage doesn’t make it home, it complicates the drive home from the airport. Don’t check the keys.

You can’t take animals in your checked luggage. While there is the ability to transport some animals in the checked cargo hold, they are in special carriers with additional precautions. There have however been people who have decided that they are going to “rescue” an animal while on vacation and to avoid scrutiny have placed it in their check luggage – I can’t say strongly enough — don’t do that.

When you have a 24-hour carryon, ensure that you keep it set up that way all the way through the trip. A friend of mine went on a family cruise to the Caribbean. Once on board the ship the one son was missing his bag. Not to worry she thought, she had packed him a great carry on. So she told him, until we locate the bag, wear the clothes in the carryon. To which he replied, “those are all the dirty clothes from my time with Nana and Papa before you got here”. Yep, he had a whole carryon of dirty (14 years old, forgot to wear deodorant, boy) clothes.

Check the Tags on Luggage

We’ve all been standing at the luggage carousel where we have seen what looks like 35 of the exact same bags come off the belt. Double-check the tags every time you take a bag off the belt.

You will be surprised how many others now have that same ‘unique’ bag that you do. I’ve heard too many times before where someone has taken the wrong bag and didn’t notice until later that night when they were in the hotel room. Or even for days after, because they were at their final destination. Always look at the tags and make sure you have your own bag. Or you may realize days later you, and someone else, has lost luggage!

Travel isn’t meant to be stressful. Yet it somehow creates some of the most frustrating moments. Often before we ever leave the airport. By taking just an extra minute or two of preparation and planning, you can save yourself a whole lot of stress.

BONUS TIP

Here’s a great bonus tip for you. When you are traveling with additional people, shuffle one outfit from every person into another bag. That way if one bag is lost you will still have other clothes for enjoying the vacation until you can go shopping for some new clothes. And when you do go shopping, save the receipts for your insurance claim. Who doesn’t love a free shopping session?!

If you already do all of these things, you’re a packing pro. Sounds like you’ve earned a vacation!

Do you have a dream destination you want to visit? I’m sure you said yes, because almost everyone does! Alaska, the land of the midnight sun, was a destination I had wanted to see for so long. And I’ve now vacationed in Alaska more than once, because it is simply an incredible destination. It is also one of the family vacation destinations I recommend quite often. Especially since there are quite a few family-friendly activities you can do while visiting. Today, I am sharing some of the activities we did while visiting the land of the midnight sun.

The Land of the Midnight Sun – An Amazing Family Vacation Idea

When I think back to the moments during our Alaskan vacation that just took my breath away. Those are the stories I share with clients and friends. The stories that light me up the most are the ones I want to share with you here.

So, grab a glass of wine, a cup of hot chocolate, or whatever makes you smile. And join me as I share a few stories and pictures from my trip.

Let me start by saying I went into this trip with one mission, I was going to go big or go home. This was an adventure. And the plan was to lean in as far as I could. Little did I know just how far that lean would take me.

An amazing 8-day Alaskan vacation for families.

Hiking on an Old Logging Road

Our captain who, we will talk about coming up, was also interested in logging. So, he had made some amazing contacts with a local logger.

One day, as we were sailing near a small islet, the captain pulled into the logger’s dock. And we were able to get off to explore.

We were in small groups of only about 10 people. Each with a member of the crew who was there to share knowledge with us. We hiked up an old logging road until we came to a field in the clearing. The guide was showing us the different flowers that were blooming there. And why they were growing in that area.

All of a sudden, one of the guests let out a squeak. We all looked up. Over by the tree line, along the edge of the field, was a grizzly bear. We were in awe. The bear then got up on his hind legs and the stare down began.

Okay, he stared. We scrambled for cameras. The guide told us to be quiet, not say a word. The silence was deafening. Well, it would have been, had it not been for the clicking of the camera lenses.

After a few moments, the bear dropped back down to four legs and sauntered away into the bushes. The guide radioed to the other groups behind us to be on the watch. And to make as much noise as possible, so they didn’t startle the bear. Safety was always their first priority. But the most amazing experiences of nature ran a close second.

I will never forget the day we got to stand face to face (okay, yes, with a field between) with a grizzly bear in the land of the midnight sun.

Get closer to bears in Homer Alaska.

Polar Plunge

It’s just as it sounds. We plunged into those polar temperature waters in the land of the midnight sun on purpose.

This is something they offer of the sailings in Alaska. You get an opportunity to jump right off the back of the ship, while it’s anchored, of course.

It started mostly as a challenge from my daughter. She was going to do it, and there was no way I could chicken out. I wasn’t about to let her hold that over me. So, if she was doing then so was I!

The water was about 40 degrees and at some point, the realities of what I was doing set in. Unfortunately, it was just a split second before I hit the water. At that moment I sent up a prayer, “Dear God, please don’t let me have a heart attack when I hit the water”.

Thank heavens for the answered prayers. I survived. Not to say the air didn’t instantly suck out of my lungs the second I hit the water. But they had warned me that the cold water would be a shock to the system.

This was the one moment above all else on this trip where I was faced with whether or not I was truly committed to going big or going home. I highly recommend the going big route!

A Kiss for Good Luck in the Land of the Midnight Sun

At least that’s what they told Caitlynne. According to the guides, kissing a banana slug is supposed to bring you good luck.

I’m not entirely sure if Caitlynne believed it or not. But we were in the land of the midnight sun. So, she did it. But the video didn’t capture it the first time, so she had to do it a second time. Oops!

When I think of traveling with my teens, it’s people like the cruise director and guides that can make a trip a vacation of a lifetime. The guides were so awesome. They weren’t stuffy or boring. In fact, they seemed to know exactly what to say to inspire the teens to participate – by choice.

The guides seemed to speak their language to keep them engaged and entertained. So much so, my daughter hardly ever noticed that she didn’t have a Wi-Fi signal. I swear that it takes a very special person to make that happen. Especially during a family vacation.

Our Captain

Our Captain had to be the most surprising element of our adventure. Typically, on most cruise ships, you only ever see the captain when he does his celebrity tour through the foyer for the photos with the captain evening.

That wasn’t the case on this ship. The captain had such energy of being a family man. It was as if the crew were all his family. And best of all, we were being hosted by him and his family in their home. Although, their home was a small ship in the land of the midnight sun.

If the ship was docked, it wasn’t uncommon to see the captain driving a skiff with passengers. Or offering a hand to help you on and off the ship. I think my admiration of the captain was strongest when you would come back on board the ship and find him playing cards with his crew. Laughing together. Smiling. And enjoying their time together.

I adored that the captain was an EVERYBODY person. That he wasn’t too big for his britches. Yet at the same time, seemed to be constantly wanting to ensure we were safe at all times and having a great vacation. There is nothing more comforting than to feel like you are a guest in someone’s home.

Bubbles from Beneath the Ship

One of the truly unique experiences we had (among so many others) was our ability to just shut off the engines and wait. We could stay in one place and watch nature unfold.

We were sitting inside of an inlet, the engines cut, watching over the sides. The bubbles were forming in the water beside us. Bubbling their way to the surface. This was the whales bubbling the fish into a circle so that they could come up and swallow as many as they could force into one area. It was exciting to see those bubbles forming, because we knew the whales would be breaching soon.

The guides shared with us as well, that when you see a flock of birds circling out over the water, the whales will be coming up soon. The birds circle above the bubbles waiting for the whales to come to the surface. Then the birds go in and capture the fish that the whales didn’t swallow. I wonder if that’s a bird’s version of hunting fish in a barrel?

The one thing I haven’t yet mentioned about UNcruise, that I feel is their number one differentiator, is that they go where no one else does. The ports or stops we made; you’re simply not going to find other ships. They provide a truly authentic experience where you will connect with nature in ways you simply can’t do with other cruise lines. It really is the UN cruise way to explore by cruising.

Big ship or small ship? Which is best for your Alaskan family vacation?

Bonus Adventure in the Land of the Midnight Sun

When we were in Alaska, we did my newest favorite thing to do while on vacation. We hired a local photographer to take us around the area and explore. She took us to her favorite spots (locals know the best spots) and took our photos. In many destinations, the photographer is usually with you for about 60-90 minutes. But this photographer was sensational and took us around for hours. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would get that close to a bald eagle, much less have someone else capture the moment.

If you would like to follow in my footsteps or blaze your own trail in the land of the midnight sun, it is time to plan your own family adventure!
