The Hawaiian Islands are often thought of as the perfect destination for honeymoons. But these days, the islands are a great option for families. Plus, they have so much to offer for everyone, from young kids to grandparents. From shopping and attractions on Oahu to the natural, untouched beauty of the Big Island, there are many reasons why Hawaii has become the perfect destination for family vacations. No matter what the ages of your children, you and your family can plan a fabulous vacation to this tropical getaway. So, here are some tips to help you decide which Hawaiian Island is perfect for your families next vacation destination.

Which Hawaiian Island is Perfect for Your Family Vacation?

Oahu – Best Hawaiian Island for families who want the “classic” Hawaii experience

Oahu is perfect for a family who is looking for a vacation that will keep them busy both day and night. On this Hawaiian Island, you can take part in all the activities that “say” Hawaii when you think about them.

During the day there is more to do than lie on the beach. Therefore, I recommend scuba diving, snorkeling, or some of the best surfing in the world. And even if you aren’t a history buff, a visit to Pearl Harbor is a must do.

At night, enjoy a Luau that will get the whole family involved. Or dance the night away at many of the hotspots in either Honolulu or Waikiki.

While Honolulu is the biggest city and the most active, Kaneohe and the North Shore are also popular for family vacations. You will find numerous family friendly vacation rentals there. So, don’t think you need to stick to the larger cities for your next family friendly vacation.

Maui – Best for families who want to get off the beaten path

Maui is great if your family wants touristy fun. Yet, this Hawiian Island has many off the beaten path family friendly getaways.

Many people say that Maui has some of the best beaches in the world. So, if your family is looking for beautiful azure-blue waters and spectacular sunsets, this is the island for you.

If you grow tired of the beach, hop in your car and drive along the coast. The southern and western shores are the most popular for whale watching. And if you are looking for a bit of Hawaiian history and culture, you won’t want to miss exploring Lahaina Town. This is a small town filled with historic sites, cultural activities, shops, cafes, and restaurants.

There are quite a few family-friendly resorts and hotels in Maui. I can help you find the one that fits your family’s needs the best.

Kauai – Best Hawaiian Island for families who know there is more to the great outdoors than the beach

Kauai is the oldest and most historic island of the Hawaiian chain. It is nicknamed the “Garden Isle” for good reason. Much of the island is covered by lush tropical rainforest. The many cliffs, canyons and trails are ideal for the family who prefers hiking boots to flip-flops.

Ready to explore by car? Your entire family will enjoy a drive along Kalalau Trail. This is a coastal trail that leads into Wailua Falls. These falls are one of the most breathtaking waterfalls in the Hawaiian Islands.

And if you still want to relax on the beach, Kauai has that too. Poipu Beach is often voted one the best beaches in America. In fact, you will love that this is one of the best family vacation spots in the USA.

Molokai – Best for families who want to see what it’s like to live like a local

Molokai doesn’t get nearly as many tourists as the bigger Hawaiian Islands. This is why some people call it their favorite. But there are so many reasons why you should visit Molokai.

Almost half the population of Molokai is Native Hawaiian. So, it has an unspoiled feel to it.

It is easy to get a sense of how the indigenous people have worked to preserve their connection to their Hawaiian roots. Simply visit the Kapuaiwa Coconut Grove, Kumu Farms, and the Molokai Plumeria. You can make your own lei at the Plumeria.

Be sure to visit Kaunakakai to give you a glimpse into what real Hawaiian life is like on a day-to-day basis. While here, enjoy authentic Hawaiian fare, browse boutique shops, and walk along the Kaunakakai Harbor.

This is one of the best vacation spots for kids, because there aren’t a ton of crowds. So, you can easily relax and never worry about your child scooting too far out of sight.

Lanai – Best Hawaiian Island for families who don’t want their vacations to feel too crowded

Lanai is the Hawaiian Island to head to for the family that’s in the mood for a vacation away from civilization. This is a small island that packs in plenty of things to do and see. But less tourist traffic allows for all activities to feel more intimate.

On this island, you will want to rent a 4-wheel drive vehicle and head up the Munro Trail. This will allow you to take in the natural beauty of the island and its beaches.

Lanai is the tale of two lands as the shopping, dining, and golfing in Lanai City is quite a juxtaposition to the bare landscape of Keahiakawelo on the outskirts of town. Honestly, it is the best of both worlds when traveling with family.

Big Island – Best for families who want to experience a range of landscapes and climates in one place

The Big Island, or the island of Hawaii, is perfect for families who want to get a taste of the full range of what these islands have to offer. From the white sand beaches to the frosted tips of the mountains, your family can explore 11 different climactic zones all within a short drive of each other.

Have you ever seen a black sand beach? If not, be sure to visit Punaluu Beach, one of the most famous black sand beaches on Hawaii.

This island features delicious coffee plantations where mom, dad, grandma, and grandpa can fuel up with a cup of locally grown brew. Afterwards, the family can go down the Hamakua Coast to see the island’s spectacular waterfalls. Or check out one the world’s most active volcanoes in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. While the park is still recovering from recent volcanic activity, many areas are open for visitors.

Amazing island vacations to consider for your next family getaway!

A family vacation in Hawaii is like visiting no other place. It’s no wonder why many families visit time and time again. Each Hawaiian Island has plenty of different activities to offer visitors. But the one thing you’ll find on each island is the beautiful Aloha spirit of the locals. Their happy and optimistic attitude makes it one of the most memorable places in the world to spend a family vacation.

Out of all the Hawaiian Islands, Molokai is the one that people seem to ignore the most. I am not sure why so many people skip Molokai when planning their family vacation in Hawaii. After all, this island has beautiful sights, fascinating locals, and fewer touristy crowds. Today, I am going to share a few of the reasons you should add a family vacation in Molokai to your travel list.

Reasons to Vacation in Molokai

Fewer Crowds and Lots of Tranquility

Above, I mentioned you will find fewer crowds on the island of Molokai. That means you will also find lots of areas filled with tranquility. The quiet is perfect for enjoying time with your family as you all make memories you will cherish forever.

Not sure if Molokai is the perfect island for your next family vacation? Find out which Hawaiian Island is best for your family!

Authentic Hawaiian Culture

Yes, you will find Hawaiian culture on all the Hawaiian Islands. However, some of the other islands have created touristy cultures that travelers enjoy. If you want to participate in the most authentic Hawaiian cultures, I recommend taking a vacation in Molokai.

One of my favorite ways to experience this culture in Hawaii is by going to one of the cultural festivals held throughout the year.

Halawa Valley

One of the most impressive natural attractions on the Hawaiian Islands is Halawa Valley. This area is not only stunning but also full of history. It is thought that this area was where the very first settlement in Hawaii was located. Archaeological evidence shows that people were living in Halawa Valley in 650 AD.

Part of this valley is on private land. However, there are plenty of trails located on public lands. Many of those trails lead to temple ruins and rushing waterfalls.

Head to the Beach

Reasons to Vacation in Molokai - Kepuhi Bay in Molokai

Your family cannot vacation in Molokai and not spend time at the beach. Halawa Beach Park is one of the best beach areas to visit. There are two incredible beaches there. They are Kawili Beach and Kama’alaea Beach.

It is best to visit these beaches during the summer when the water is calm. During the winter, the water currents are quite strong, and swimming is considered dangerous.

Another excellent beach in Molokai is Papokahu Beach. This is one of the largest white sand beaches on the Hawaiian Islands. There are plenty of amenities at this beach, including restrooms and picnic tables.

Kamakou Preserve

Another magnificent destination to visit on Molokai is the Kamakou Preserve. Your family will see hundreds of unique Hawaiian plants throughout this preserve. Plenty of native animals and birds live in the Kamakou Preserve too.

One of the best ways to fully appreciate this area of the island is to head out on a hike.

Pala’au State Park

Your family will discover it is simple to spend time out in nature while on vacation in Molokai. One of my favorite places to go is Pala’au State Park. Make sure you take the time to visit the overlook to see views of Kalaupapa.

That area is where people who had leprosy were sent many years ago. Some of the younger generations from those families still live on the Kalaupapa Peninsula. You cannot currently visit this area like you were able to in the past. If that rule changes in the future, it is worth a few hours of your time to meet the families who live there.

Delicious Molokai Hot Bread

Okay, so the main reason why everyone should take the time to go on vacation in Molokai is the delicious hot bread. You can purchase Molokai hot bread at Kanemitsu Bakery. This hot bread contains yummy fillings. You can purchase it filled with everything from cream cheese to strawberries or blueberries.

You can purchase this hot bread on the other islands in Hawaii. However, it never seems to taste as good as it does when you eat it in Molokai!

These are the main reasons you need to take a family vacation in Molokai. There are many other reasons, though, and you will discover many of them once you arrive on the island. I can personalize your family vacation in Molokai so you do everything you want to while away from home.

So, are you ready to receive a personalized family vacation itinerary for your next trip?

Does your family want to visit the Hawaiian Islands during a future vacation? Have you basically decided the Big Island of Hawaii has everything you need for a fabulous family vacation? Well, I can tell you that you have made a fantastic decision! There are so many thrilling activities, as well as options for relaxing, available during family vacations in Hawaii. However, when you decide to start planning this vacation, you will want to consider going off the beaten path. I always recommend visiting some of the hidden gems of an area when you are traveling and making memories with family. Over in Akaka Falls State Park, there are quite a few hidden gems many people are not aware of. Some of those hidden gems are in the park, while others are close by. Today, I am going to share the hidden gems inside and near Akaka Falls State Park with you so you can add them to your itinerary on your next Hawaiian family vacation.

Hidden Gems Inside Akaka Falls State Park

Pepeekeo Scenic Drive

Okay, so the Pepeekeo Scenic Drive isn’t right within Akaka Falls State Park. However, it is about fifteen minutes away. This drive begins in Pepeekeo town and goes along the eastern coast of the island. There are plenty of lookout points along the way.

I recommend stopping at as many of them as possible. Each one offers spectacular views of the ocean and the smaller communities.

Kahuna Falls Overlook

Akaka Falls is the main feature of this state park in Hawaii. However, a little way upstream, you will find the Kahuna Falls Overlook. Your family can easily hike the half mile to reach this area within Akaka Falls State Park.

Hiking Trails in Akaka Falls State Park

Hidden Gems Inside Akaka Falls State Park - Akaka Falls State Park

Most people are aware of the paved hiking trail that leads to Akaka Falls in this state park. There are many other hiking trails within this park, though. If your family loves to hike, I recommend venturing out on one of those trails.

Some of the trails can be slightly challenging, so be prepared when you head out.

Pe’epe’e Falls

If you do take the time to drive the Pepeekeo Scenic Drive and make a few stops, you will have a chance to see Pe’epe’e Falls. This waterfall is only eighty feet tall. But the water drops down into a very deep pool that is surrounded by lots of lush vegetation.

You must hike about a half mile to reach this trail. Make sure you are all wearing your bathing suits because you can all swim in the deep pool when you arrive!

Check out my travel guide on the Big Island of Hawaii to see what you should know before your next family vacation there.

Honoli’i Beach Park

After a day exploring Akaka Falls State Park, your family will be ready for a little time at the beach. Thankfully, Honoli’i Beach Park is only about fourteen miles away. Your family will love swimming or relaxing on the sand.

This is also a popular beach for surfing and bodyboarding. So, feel free to grab your boards and hit the waves during your family vacation in Hawaii.

Kolekole Beach Park is another option. However, it is twenty-five miles from Akaka Falls. However, it is worth a visit if you want to capture pictures of the massive cliffs surrounding the beach. This is also a perfect beach for picnics and relaxation.

Kaumana Caves

One of the largest sets of lava tubes in the world can be found on the Big Island of Hawaii. These lava tubes are known as Kaumana Caves. Your family can explore these caves on their own. However, I recommend taking a guided tour so you learn more about everything you see.

These are the hidden gems you can see both inside and near Akaka Falls State Park. I can add these destinations to your itinerary, as well as many others, as I am planning your Hawaiian family vacation.

So, are you ready to have me create your personalized family vacation in Hawaii, so you can see the hidden gems in and near Akaka Falls State Park?

Have you been trying to decide which Hawaiian Island is best for your next family vacation? Would you love to see Oahu or Maui but don’t want to deal with the crowds? Well, Kauai may be the perfect island for your next family vacation. This island is known as the Garden Isle, and for good reason. Add that reason to many others, and you may finally realize a family vacation in Kauai is exactly what you have been searching for. Today, I am going to share eight reasons why you should take a family vacation in Kauai. Read through them, and then get ready to make a few memories with your family. Those memories will be talked about at holidays and get-togethers long in the future.

8 Reasons to Take a Family Vacation in Kauai

Beautiful Beaches

You won’t need to skip the beach when you take a family vacation in Kauai. There are quite a few spectacular beaches to choose from. Poipu Beach is a popular beach for swimming and snorkeling. Hanalei Bay Beach, Tunnels Beach, and Polihale Beach are other incredible options.

Amazing Hiking Opportunities

One of the best ways to explore the Hawaiian Islands is by hiking. On the island of Kauai, you will find some amazing hiking opportunities. Beginning hikers will love going along the Kalepa Ridge Trail. It is only a mile long. During this hike, you will see stunning views of the Na Pali Coast.

The Kalalau Trail is a lot longer, at eleven miles. However, this hike will take you through some of the best dense forests and beaches on the island. Along the way, you will see stunning waterfalls and views from massive cliffs.

Incredible Accommodations

You won’t need to stay in a hut on the beach while on a family vacation in Kauai. I can book luxury accommodations for you. Those accommodations are only steps away from the beach too. So, you can all enjoy those long morning strolls along the sand and nights watching the sunset.

Experiencing the Na Pali Coast

8 Reasons to Take a Family Vacation in Kauai - Na Pali Coast

One of the best attractions on Kauai is the Na Pali Coast. This is a fabulous seventeen-mile stretch of coastline. There are so many things you can do on the Na Pali Coast. Start with a hike or boat ride. Then consider a helicopter tour to see everything from a different vantage point.

Experiencing the Royal Coconut Coast

If you can’t get enough of the coastlines, you will be happy to know that Kauai is also home to the Royal Coconut Coast. This coastline is on the east side of the island. You will discover numerous historic areas amongst the coconut trees on this beautiful coast in Kauai.

Incredible Shopping

Local stores are everywhere on the island of Kauai. One of the best places to go shopping is Kinipopo Shopping Village. You will find this shopping destination on the Royal Coconut Coast. During your shopping adventures, you will find everything from jewelry and clothing to works of art.

Spectacular Waterfalls

Some of the best waterfalls in the world can be seen during a family vacation in Kauai. Numerous waterfalls can be seen at Mount Waialeale. You must hike three miles to reach those waterfalls. Unless you take a helicopter tour to see the waterfalls from above.

Another popular waterfall in Kauai is Wailua Falls.

Impressive Waimea Canyon

Waimea Canyon is often called the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. This canyon is fourteen miles long and one mile wide. Inside the canyon, you can discover waterfalls, gorges, and dense forests. One of the best ways to see it all is by following the hiking trails.

These are eight of the main reasons to take a family vacation in Kauai. You will notice that I didn’t mention anything about any of these areas on the island being crowded. This is because crowds barely exist on this beautiful Hawaiian Island.

So, are you ready to book a family vacation in Kauai?

Are you looking at the calendar and wondering where the year has gone already?? The months just keep flying by as we keep checking things off our to-do list and taking care of the kids. Well, before you flip past too many more months, you may want to think about your next family vacation. It is probably time you spend a little extra time away from the office while making memories with your family. You can easily take a family vacation during the summer. But if you want to escape the crowds, the fall can be a better time. Plus, it gives you extra time to plan! Today, I am going to share the best fall family vacations in 2023. One of these vacations should interest your family for a little much-needed time away from home.

Best Fall Family Vacations in 2025

Punta Mita, Mexico

Luxurious vacations are a must once you reach a certain age, and Punta Mita doesn’t disappoint! This secluded vacation destination in Mexico may quickly become your new favorite family vacation destination.

Upscale resorts are located amongst all the multimillion-dollar homes. You can stay steps from the white sandy beach. This will be perfect for those long morning walks on the sand and late evening strolls. Oh, and the kids will be thrilled with the opportunity to have surfing lessons so close to the room.

If you do feel like venturing a little further away, I recommend heading over to Isla Marietas National Park. It is the perfect destination for spending time in nature. When you arrive at the park, consider all your options. There is snorkeling, boating, hiking, and whale watching. Simply choose the activity your family will love the most. And then take pictures so you remember it forever.

Tamarindo, Costa Rica

Tropical rainforests will be waiting for your family when you choose to vacation down in Costa Rica. The charming town of Tamarindo is the perfect place to combine thrilling adventures and quiet time.

Your days can be spent on the beaches of Tamarindo, Grande, and Langosta. The kids can surf while you watch. Although, feel free to jump in the water to join them during their lessons.

Out in the jungle, you can wander through Monteverde’s Cloud Forest or Arenal Volcano National Park. Don’t forget to spend a little time hiking to the beautiful waterfalls Costa Rica is known for.

Best Fall Family Vacations in 2023 - Arenal Volcano in Costa Rica

Las Vegas, Nevada

You can easily take a fall family vacation right here in the US. Las Vegas is an excellent option, even with the kids. You can all walk up and down The Strip, taking in all the sights. There’s the volcano in front of The Mirage, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, and of course, the fountains at The Bellagio. Duck into a few of the casinos to see the magic on the inside.

Before the kids start to say they are bored, head over to the theme park at Circus Circus. The kids can go on the rides while you try to win big on the slot machines.

More fun can be had over on Fremont Street. The Downtown Container Park has bridges to cross and a thirty-three-foot slide to go down.

There is no limit to what you can do during a family vacation in Las Vegas.

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

It will be tempting to simply hang out at your resort when you take a fall family vacation in Punta Cana. However, there is so much waiting for you outside the resort perimeter. The entire family will love ziplining high above the ground at Bavaro Adventure Park.

The Indigenous Eyes Ecological Park and Reserve is an excellent place to learn more about nature in Punta Cana. Your time there may even lead you all to go swimming with dolphins and stingrays before you head home.

If you don’t want that much action, you can easily go swimming in a cenote or simply float down a lazy river.

Kauai, Hawaii

The island of Kauai isn’t as busy or touristy as Maui, Oahu, and the Big Island. Your family won’t miss a thing, though, because they can still enjoy every moment spent on Kauai. Hanalei Bay is the best beach for surfing.

If you prefer to actually see more of the island, you can explore by helicopter, boat, or horse. Don’t skip a hike on the Kuilau Trail. The views are incredible, and it is one of the best hikes on the island.

Of course, the best way to truly experience authentic Hawaiian culture is by attending a luau. I can arrange for you to attend the best one on the island.

Dubai

There is so much to see and do during a family vacation in Dubai. If the kids love theme parks, you can visit IMG World of Adventure or the Dubai Parks and Resorts. The latter is a massive theme park complex with all different theme parks.

In between theme park days, you can go shopping at Dubai Mall or relax at Kite Beach. Just make sure you take the time to go snorkeling in the world’s deepest swimming pool.

San Diego, California

Depending on where you live, the temperatures can start to cool down during the fall. If your family is yearning for the warmer days of summer again, head out to San Diego. The sun is almost always shining there. Plus, there are plenty of beaches for some rest and relaxation.

If you don’t want to spend time by the water, head to the San Diego Zoo, San Diego Model Railroad Museum, or the San Diego Air and Space Museum. Walk along the harbor at Embarcadero or head to the Cabrillo National Monument.

Stowe, Vermont

Vermont is known for its fall foliage. That makes it the perfect destination for a fall family vacation. You can stay in any of the charming towns. However, Stowe is one of the best when it comes to making memories with the family.

To really appreciate the beauty of the changing colors, take a hike through Smugglers Notch State Park. Or drive along the Stowe Scenic Auto Road. You’ll find all sorts of yummy fall treats at the Country Store on Main Street. Although, if you are searching for the best apple cider, you must drive to Cold Hollow Cider Mill

These are the best fall family vacations in 2023. I am sure at least one of them has now made it onto your list of places to go for your next family vacation.

So, are you ready to book a fall family vacation and visit one of these destinations?

If you said yes, I would like to invite you to schedule a planning session with me by clicking here. When you click on this link, you will be taken directly to my digital calendar to schedule a time that is convenient for you.

Choosing which Hawaiian Island to visit for your next family vacation might appear to be simple. Until you realize how many fun family adventures are available on the islands of Oahu and Maui. So, Oahu vs Maui? Which one is best for your family vacation? Today, I am going to share the best things about each island. This information should make it easy to determine whether Oahu or Maui is your destination of choice for the family vacation you want to take.

Oahu vs Maui Which Hawaiian Island is Best for Your Family Vacation?

Fun Adventures Only Available on Oahu

Okay, so let’s say you have decided Oahu is the Hawaiian Island you want to visit for your next family vacation. This is an excellent decision because there are so many family-friendly things to do on this island. You must be aware that a good number of the locals live on this island, though. Most of them live within Honolulu. This is important to know because you could be facing larger crowds everywhere you go.

With that being said, you don’t need to spend your time in the middle of the bustling city. Your family can venture out to Diamond Head. A hike to this crater will give you some peace and quiet. As well as gorgeous views of the island of Oahu from the side of the crater.

Other interesting attractions include Iolani Palace, Bishop Museum, and the Honolulu Museum of Art. Those three are perfect if you want to learn more about the history and culture of Oahu and the rest of Hawaii.

You won’t want to skip snorkeling in Hanauma Bay. Eating pineapple and getting lost in the pineapple maze at the Dole Plantation is also a must for most families. Add in a quick trip to the Pearl Harbor National Memorial and USS Arizona, and your days will be full.

Fun Adventures Only Available on Maui

Over on the island of Maui, you won’t find as many people. But you will discover a few more soft sandy beaches. There are plenty of luxurious resorts on Maui. You will want to make sure I book accommodations in one of these. That way, you can relax and unwind at the end of your busy Maui days.

One full day will be needed to tackle the Road to Hana. This narrow, winding road is sixty-four miles long. There are multiple stops you can make along the way. You don’t need to see them all, but there are certain ones I will make sure are on your list.

Oh, and if you don’t want to make the drive, I can always arrange for a tour for your family.

The Maui Ocean Center is the best place to see marine life up close. And afterward, you can head over to Maui Brewing Company for drinks.

Yes, there are more exciting family adventures over on Oahu. However, Maui will never disappoint. Especially if you really want a little extra relaxation and time chatting with the kids while on a family vacation. Only you will know the answer to Oahu vs Maui. Have a heart-to-heart with your family and see if they agree with the Hawaiian Island you chose.

So, are you ready to book a family vacation in Hawaii?

If you said yes, I would like to invite you to schedule a planning session with me by clicking here. When you click on this link, you will be taken directly to my digital calendar to schedule a time that is convenient for you.

The Native Hawaiians arrived in the Hawaiian Islands hundreds of years ago. They brought many unique Hawaiian cultures and traditions with them. As other people chose the Hawaiian Islands as their new destination to live in more recent years, some of the cultures and traditions have evolved. Therefore, you will see quite diverse cultures and traditions when you are visiting any of the Hawaiian Islands during your next family vacation.

Hawaiian Cultures

One of the greatest Hawaiian cultures is the spirit of aloha. The locals choose to be in the present and share the essence of life. We can all learn a lot from the Hawaiian locals. Their way of life can teach us kindness, compassion, and peace. While there are many different ways to learn about Hawaiian culture, the most common ways are through:

  • Chants
  • Music
  • Arts
  • Hula
  • Hawaiian Language
  • Historic Sites

Ea Mai Hawaiinuiakea

Ea Mai Hawaiinuiakea is a chant that refers to the origins of early chiefs and kings on the Hawaiian Islands. This chant is used to affirm all connections between the people and the land they live on.

The Hawaiian Language

The Hawaiian language is also referred to as Ōlelo Hawaii. This language was brought to the islands by the Native Hawaiians. This language was introduced back in the early 1800s. Over the years, it evolved into the language we all now hear today when we are visiting the Hawaiian Islands.

When you decide to take a family vacation in Hawaii, it is always best to learn at least a few words and phrases in the Hawaiian language. The best word to know will be aloha because you will use that every time you want to greet someone.

Historic Sites

One of the best ways to experience some of the Hawaiian cultures is to visit a few of the historic sites on the islands. All the islands have numerous historic sites. Each site offers a unique look into the past while allowing you to see how it fits with the Hawaiian cultures and traditions.

If you are interested in seeing any of the historic sites in Hawaii during your next family vacation, let me know. I will be more than happy to include a few of them in your customized itinerary!

Hawaiian Traditions

There are quite a few Hawaiian traditions you should be aware of when you choose to take a family vacation on one of the Hawaiian Islands. Many of the Hawaiian traditions have been derived from numerous cultures. Some traditions may seem familiar to you, while others may be traditions you have never heard of before.

Aloha Clothing

Almost everyone living in Hawaii embraces the Aloha line of clothing. The Hawaiian floral shirts and muumuu dresses can be seen everywhere. Those who prefer to skip the florals will choose clothing items with earth-tone colors. You will be amazed at how many businessmen and women can be seen in floral shirts as their business attire for the day!

A Kiss on the Cheek

Every greeting in Hawaii begins with a kiss on the cheek. This Hawaiian tradition also occurs at the end of an event. When you kiss someone’s cheek to say goodbye, you are saying hui hoi, which means until we meet again.

No Wearing Shoes Inside a Home

No one wears shoes inside a home in Hawaii. All shoes, and even slippers, are left out on the doorstep to avoid bringing any dirt inside the house. Thankfully, Hawaii has very warm weather, so going without shoes inside is easier than it is in many colder parts of the world.

Lei Day

All aspects of the lei are celebrated on May 1st every year. While you can celebrate this day on any of the Hawaiian Islands, the experience is always best on Oahu. On that island, you can venture over to Queen Kapiolani Park for live music, lei-making demonstrations, local cuisine, and even a lei contest.

Giving of a Lei

Giving leis is a popular tradition in Hawaii. This is why you will receive one on multiple occasions when you are visiting the islands. The locals often give out leis for graduations, retirements, birthdays, and so many other events. When you receive a lei, you can hang it up to dry. Or you can place it in the refrigerator and inhale the scent for a few days.

Eating Sashimi

The locals in Hawaii love eating raw fish. Throughout the year, the raw fish of choice is tuna. However, on New Year’s Eve, eating sashimi, which can be made from many types of fish, is a must. If you want to participate in this Hawaiian tradition on New Year’s Eve in Hawaii, you must arrive at the fish markets early. It is common for the markets to sell out of fish early!

Ohana

Ohana is quite an important tradition in Hawaii. It symbolizes family. All those close friends that you have always considered to be part of your family are actually treated as family in Hawaii through Ohana. This tradition creates a feeling of inclusiveness for every one you spend a lot of time with.

Hula

The hula used to be performed in private. Nowadays, you will see the hula performed in public as a form of entertainment. To learn the hula the proper way, you must train with a respected kumu. Only they can teach you the technical skills needed to perform the hula in the most sacred way.

These are the Hawaiian cultures and traditions you should know about when you are planning your next family vacation in Hawaii. I know there is a lot of information here, so feel free to ask me questions when we begin talking about your next Hawaiian vacation.

Are you ready to plan a fabulous family vacation in Hawaii and embrace these local cultures and traditions?

Oahu is one of the most popular Hawaiian Islands for family vacations. The diversity of this Hawaiian Island is always a plus for most families like yours. The vibrant nightlife, laidback beach towns, and the abundance of marine life are also what draw people to the island of Oahu. All those things are amazing when it comes to a family vacation in Oahu. But what if you were to include a few of the best waterfalls in Oahu on your list of things to do? If your family loves adventures, then a few of the waterfalls on Oahu will be the perfect addition to your next family vacation.

Best Waterfalls in Oahu

Manoa Falls

At the top of the list of best waterfalls in Oahu is Manoa Falls. This waterfall is not too far from Honolulu, which is why so many visitors choose to add it to their Hawaiian itinerary. The two-mile round-trip trail will take you through a lush forest filled with banyan trees. Manoa Falls is one hundred fifty feet high, so make sure you look way up when you reach it.

Hamama Falls

One of the least visited waterfalls on Oahu is Hamama Falls. This forty-foot-high waterfall is surrounded by lush scenery and lots of solitude. The four-mile round-trip hike is quite easy. Once you arrive at this waterfall in Oahu, you will want to enjoy a picnic lunch. Maybe even a nap before you make the return trip. It is important to note that this waterfall is on state land. Therefore, arrangements will need to be made to acquire a permit for your visit.

Waikahalulu Falls

If your family does not like hiking through the woods to unknown destinations, you can still see a waterfall in Oahu. Waikahalulu Falls can be found inside the Lili’uokalani Gardens. This waterfall is only ten feet high. It is an excellent option, though, if you want to see a waterfall in Oahu without hiking anywhere. Plus, you won’t be able to resist the gorgeous scenery and the ability to escape the noise of the larger cities for a little bit.

Waimea Falls

Waimea Falls is also known as Waihi Falls. This is one of the most accessible waterfalls on Oahu. The hiking trail to this waterfall is flat and mostly paved. It is four miles long, though, so you will need to plan your time accordingly. I always recommend combining a hike to Waimea Falls with your time at both the archaeological sites and botanical gardens at Waimea Valley. It creates a fabulous day trip option that all families love!

Maunawili Falls

Maunawili Falls can be quite crowded on the weekends, so I will plan your visit there on a weekday if possible. This will ensure your family enjoys the slightly challenging walk along the trail without running into too many people along the way. It is best not to attempt this hike after a rainstorm because the mud gets quite slick. If you do happen to find a good day to visit this waterfall in Oahu, you will be rewarded with the rushing water, as well as beautiful views.

Lulumahu Falls

Off-the-beaten-path destinations can really get your heart pumping. That’s if your family is up for the adventure! Lulumahu Falls is a waterfall that is located in a remote area in Oahu. There are never too many tourists. That is partly because you will need a permit from the Hawaii Department of Forestry and Wildlife. Lulumahu Falls is on state land and is located near the Kaniakapupu Ruins. There are two entrances to the trail. They will both lead you to the waterfall, but neither one is clearly marked. You will want to pay attention as you are hiking so you do not miss the signs that you are getting closer to this waterfall.

Upside-Down Waterfall

One of the most unique waterfalls in Oahu is the Upside-Down Waterfall. You can see this waterfall from the Pali Highway. However, there isn’t a safe place to stop on the road, so any pictures you take will probably be as you are driving past the falls. If you could get out of your car, you would want to stand on your head to see this waterfall on Oahu. The reason for this is the water never hits the ground once it rushes over the top. Instead, the water is moved back up into the air by the strong winds. The best time to see the Upside-Down Waterfall is after a heavy rainstorm.

These are the best waterfalls in Oahu; however, there are a few others you may be interested in seeing as well. I can easily add any of these waterfalls to your customized Hawaiian itinerary.

So, are you ready to plan your family vacation in Oahu?

If you said yes, I would like to invite you to schedule a planning session with me by clicking here. This will take you directly to my digital calendar to set up a time that is most convenient for you.

Oahu may be the third largest of the Hawaiian Islands, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty of space to explore. Thanks to the gorgeous year-round weather, you can spend practically all your time outside during your Oahu vacation! While you may think that time needs to be spent at one of the beaches or at certain attractions, you should know that you can also wander along some amazing hiking trails. There are multiple hiking trails in Oahu, and some of them will lead to stunning Hawaiian waterfalls. But since you won’t be able to get to them all during your vacation, let me share the best hikes in Oahu.

Best Hikes in Oahu that May Lead to Stunning Hawaiian Waterfalls

Makapu’u Lighthouse Hike

The Makapu’u Lighthouse Hike is perfect for beginners. This easy hike in Oahu is two and a half miles long. You can easily finish it in two hours or less. The paved trail takes you directly to the lighthouse, as well as the observation deck. I love hiking this trail in Oahu when the whales are migrating.

Manoa Falls Trail

The Manoa Falls Trail is another easy hike in Oahu. The trail is a little more than a mile and a half and will take about an hour or so to complete. At the end of the trail, you will reach Manoa Falls. This Hawaiian waterfall may look familiar to you. If it does, it is because it was featured in Jurassic Park and Lost.

Upper Makua Cave Hike

If your family wants to spend a little time inside a cave when you are on vacation in Oahu, you must do the Upper Makua Cave Hike. This easy hike in Oahu is a little over a half mile. You can easily complete this hike in an hour or less. You will know you have reached the end of the trail when you are at the mouth of the cave. This is when you will see spectacular views of the western shoreline of the island.

Kaena Point Hike

There are many ridges and hikes that involve heights in Oahu. But you won’t need to worry about either of those things when you decide to hike Kaena Point. This five-and-a-half-mile hike in Oahu will have you walking along the coastline. You will see all the usual marine life and birds on this hike. But you will also have the chance to discover a few of the wild pigs that live on the island of Oahu.

Pu’u o Hulu

Pu’u o Hulu is also known as the Pink Pillbox Hike in Oahu. It is a moderately difficult trail that is about one and a half miles long. The trail will take you along the ridge until you reach the Pink Pillbox. There are other pillboxes along the way, but none of them offer amazing views like the pink one.

Diamond Head Hike

Your family cannot vacation in Oahu and not take the time to explore a volcanic crater. The Diamond Head Hike is moderately challenging at almost two miles in length. This hike in Oahu begins in the middle of a volcanic crater. There are multiple switchbacks and stairs that your family will need to conquer before you reach the rim. But the reward will be the sight of lush fields and sparkling water from the top.

Maunawili Falls Trail

Maunawili Falls is the perfect location for diving off the falls into the pool below. If this sounds like an adventure your family will love, then you must venture out on the Maunawili Falls Trail. This hiking trail in Oahu is approximately two and a half miles long and takes about four hours to complete. It may take your family longer though if you spend more time at the waterfall.

Kaau Crater Hike

The Kaau Crater Hike is quite challenging. I only recommend tackling this hike if your entire family has plenty of hiking experience! This hike in Oahu doesn’t start easy, nor does it get easy as you continue along the trail. But a little rope climbing with your hike will have you experiencing rushing Hawaiian waterfalls and stunning views of a volcano crater and the rest of the island. This hike will take approximately five hours to complete, so it is best to schedule it for a day when you don’t have anything else going on.

The Alternate Stairway to Heaven Hike

For many years, locals and travelers alike hiked the Stairway to Heaven in Oahu. However, the 3,922 stairs that lead to the top of the trail have been closed for many years now. And it is illegal to climb those stairs to reach the top. Thankfully, you won’t need to forgo the views at the top because there is an alternate hike available to you.

The alternate hike is just over nine miles long and is considered moderately difficult. It is called the Moanalua Trail, and there are rope climbs along the way. However, once you reach the top, you get fabulous panoramic views, as well as views of the stairs.

These are some of the best hikes in Oahu, but there are many others I can recommend to you. If your family loves hiking, I can easily make sure your vacation in Oahu includes plenty of opportunities to hit the trails!

The island of Molokai is the most authentic of all the Hawaiian Islands. However, that doesn’t mean you will find everything you would see on the other Hawaiian Islands on this one. There are not dozens of tourist attractions to keep you busy on Molokai. But there are plenty of outdoor options to keep you entertained. When you are not relaxing on the beach, enjoying the local culture, and participating in water sports, you may want to take your family on a hike on the island of Molokai. As with everything else on Molokai, your hiking trail options are limited. But the time you spend on the trails with your family will be the time you will cherish forever!

Best Hikes in Molokai that May Lead to Gorgeous Hawaiian Waterfalls

Kamakou Preserve

Hiking the Kamakou Preserve is quite a task since it covers more than two thousand acres of land. The trails consist of either dirt or a boardwalk. There is a guided hike within this preserve once a month. However, you are more than welcome to hike on your own at any time. It is best to stop at the office when you arrive at the Kamakou Preserve. The Educational Hike Coordinator can give you a map and other instructions that will be helpful for your hike.

In order to hike the trails in the Kamakou Preserve, all your gear must be clean. If you have any soil or debris on your shoes or any other gear, you will not be allowed to hike. The reason for this is the plants found in this preserve are highly vulnerable to invasive species. And since 90% of the plants are found nowhere else in the world, the locals are doing everything they can to ensure every plant stays alive.

Kalaupapa Pali Trail

The Kalaupapa Pali Trail is one of only two ways you can reach the Kalaupapa Peninsula and the Kalaupapa Community, where the leper colony is located. If you are interested in the history of this colony, you can fly or take a guided hike. Everyone must be at least sixteen years of age in your family to enter the colony. This is at the request of the people who still live there.

Currently, this trail is closed due to a mudslide. While the goal is to have the trail reopened sooner than later, you can only reach the colony via air for now. If you are interested in hiking this trail, I will communicate with the park prior to creating your itinerary to see if the trail has since been reopened.

Halawa Valley Falls

The Halawa Valley Falls is on private property, but that doesn’t mean you can’t go hiking to see the spectacular waterfall! The owners are currently giving hiking tours every day of the week except Sundays. As you are hiking, the owners will share quite a bit about Hawaiian customs, culture, and so much more.

This is not a difficult hike, but there are two points where you will be scrambling over boulders. You will also be crossing a river during the hike. This trail is approximately five miles long, and it normally takes at least four hours to complete. You must have reservations to do the Halawa Valley Falls hike, and I will take care of that as I am planning the rest of your Molokai family vacation. I always recommend doing this hike at the beginning of your family vacation in Molokai. This way, if it rains and your hike is canceled for one day, I can always get it rescheduled for another day of your trip.

As you can see, there aren’t too many hiking trails on the island of Molokai. However, the few that are on the island are simply amazing. They are well worth the time you will spend on the trail. I can’t wait to hear which of these hiking trails in Molokai is going to be on your wish list!

Are you ready to start planning your next family vacation in Molokai?

I hope you are because I would love to invite you to schedule a planning session with me by clicking here. This will take you directly to my digital calendar, where you can schedule a time that is convenient for you.

And if you are not ready to start the planning process yet, I would like to invite you to sign up for my newsletter by clicking here. This will allow us to stay in touch as I continue to send you travel information in the future.
