Has visiting the Hawaiian Islands been on your travel bucket list? If it has, there is no better time than now to take a spectacular Hawaiian vacation with your family. Imagine spending twelve days exploring three of the six Hawaiian Islands. During this time, your family can go on adventures while making memories. Today, I am sharing a sample twelve-day Hawaiian vacation itinerary. It will show you what is possible during a family vacation in Hawaii. However, your itinerary doesn’t need to look exactly the same. I can personalize it to meet the needs of your family, so you can take the adventures you want while vacationing in paradise.

12 Day Spectacular Hawaiian Vacation

This spectacular family vacation on the Hawaiian Islands will take you to the islands of Oahu, Maui, and Kauai. Each island offers something magical and unique. Perfect for those memory making moments with your family.

Day One: Oahu

The first day of your amazing Hawaiian vacation will begin with you flying into Oahu’s airport. I recommend staying at a resort near Waikiki Beach. This will allow you to experience the ambiance of this popular Oahu beach. And you will be close to many of the activities you will be doing throughout the beginning part of your family vacation.

Today will be all about exploring your resort, spending time relaxing on one of the best beaches on Oahu, and maybe even walking around the Waikiki area.

You will want to go to bed early, so you can recover from jet lag and be ready for a full day of adventures in the morning.

Day Two: Oahu

Day two of your Hawaiian vacation will have your family taking a tour of this beautiful island. This private island tour will last for five hours.

Since this is a private tour, you can control how long you stay in each area you visit. You may also request specific destinations, so you stop at the sights you want to see the most.

After your tour, you can spend the rest of the day doing the activities your family enjoys.

12 Day Spectacular Hawaiian Vacation - Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head

Day Three: Oahu

You can explore Oahu on your own with your family today. Or head down to the beach to take surfing lessons or go swimming. There are so many family friendly things to do in Oahu

Moms may even want to escape for an hour or two and be pampered at the spa. Use your imagination to make this a day you will remember forever.

Day Four: Maui

You will be up early today, so you can make it to the airport in time for your flight to Maui. The flight is short, so it won’t be long before you touch down on another beautiful Hawaiian Island.

Drive to your resort, unpack, and then start the next part of your fabulous family vacation.

You may want to spend the evening down in Whaler’s Village. You can grab a bite to eat there and do a little shopping.

Day Five: Maui

Of course, you can save Whaler’s Village and many of the other sights in Maui for day five of your vacation. This day will be yours to drive around, explore, and have fun.

There are quite a few family friendly things to do in Maui. I can help you decide which activities are best for your family vacation.

Day Six: Maui

You can never spend too much time at Hawaiian beaches. There are a couple amazing beaches in Maui. I recommend checking a couple of them out if you don’t mind doing a little driving. Or simply choose the beach closest to your resort and stay until the sun sets.

Day Seven: Maui

It is finally time for your Road to Hana tour. Taking a guided tour of the Road to Hana is always best, because it allows you to focus on the sights instead of the winding road.

Your driver will stop at many of the popular Road to Hana sights. Your tour guide will point out many others along the way.

This will be a long day, so you will want to be prepared with drinks and snacks to keep you fueled and ready for adventures.

12 Day Spectacular Hawaiian Vacation - Road to Hana

Day Eight: Kauai

After a long day on the Road to Hana, you may be tempted to sleep in on day eight of your spectacular Hawaiian vacation. And you can for a little bit. However, you will need to get up sooner than you would like to catch your plane to Kauai.

This is another short flight, so don’t count on taking a nap while in the air. You can always take a nap once you get to your resort. Or head down to the beach for a nap on the sand.

Day Nine: Kauai

It is all about exploring the great outdoors when you are in Kauai. Today, your family will make memories in Kauai, as you paddle along the Wailua River to Secret Falls.

Don’t forget to bring your camera, so you can capture some family photos amongst all the beauty you see.

Day Ten: Kauai

You can’t spend time in Kauai and not check out the Na Pali Coast. So, that is what your family will be doing on day ten of your Hawaiian vacation!

Head out on a snorkeling tour to see marine life that is native to the waters of Na Pali Coast. Your group will leave the hotel for this tour very early in the morning. So, hopefully you managed to go to bed early the night before!

Day Eleven: Kauai

If snorkeling isn’t adventurous enough for some of your family members, today’s adventure should be much better. Today, you can fly high over the Kauai landscape, as you go ziplining.

You can all compete to see who can go the fastest on the side-by-side zipline. Then everyone can “argue” over who really went the fastest, while you cool off in the Bamboo Pool.

If your family doesn’t want to go ziplining, there are other amazing things to do in Kauai

Day Twelve: Kauai

On this day, you will wake up and realize that your family vacation in the Hawaiian Islands is now over. You will need to finish cramming everything into your suitcases and head to the airport to fly home.

Thankfully, all the memories you have made over the course of these twelve days will be with you forever. And you can talk about them with anyone who is wide awake during your flight. And if you are all too tired and fast asleep, you can have those discussions after you have returned to your regular routine.

This spectacular twelve-day itinerary of a Hawaiian vacation is just a glimpse of what is possible on these three Hawaiian Islands. Your family vacation in Hawaii can be just as magical, or even more magical. All you need to do is let me know what you want to experience during your Hawaiian vacation. I will then personalize an itinerary that will have all your family vacation dreams becoming reality. And that means you can easily check an item off your travel bucket list.

Have you been trying to decide which Hawaiian Island is best for your next family vacation? Would you love to see Oahu or Maui but don’t want to deal with the crowds? Well, Kauai may be the perfect island for your next family vacation. This island is known as the Garden Isle, and for good reason. Add that reason to many others, and you may finally realize a family vacation in Kauai is exactly what you have been searching for. Today, I am going to share eight reasons why you should take a family vacation in Kauai. Read through them, and then get ready to make a few memories with your family. Those memories will be talked about at holidays and get-togethers long in the future.

8 Reasons to Take a Family Vacation in Kauai

Beautiful Beaches

You won’t need to skip the beach when you take a family vacation in Kauai. There are quite a few spectacular beaches to choose from. Poipu Beach is a popular beach for swimming and snorkeling. Hanalei Bay Beach, Tunnels Beach, and Polihale Beach are other incredible options.

Amazing Hiking Opportunities

One of the best ways to explore the Hawaiian Islands is by hiking. On the island of Kauai, you will find some amazing hiking opportunities. Beginning hikers will love going along the Kalepa Ridge Trail. It is only a mile long. During this hike, you will see stunning views of the Na Pali Coast.

The Kalalau Trail is a lot longer, at eleven miles. However, this hike will take you through some of the best dense forests and beaches on the island. Along the way, you will see stunning waterfalls and views from massive cliffs.

Incredible Accommodations

You won’t need to stay in a hut on the beach while on a family vacation in Kauai. I can book luxury accommodations for you. Those accommodations are only steps away from the beach too. So, you can all enjoy those long morning strolls along the sand and nights watching the sunset.

Experiencing the Na Pali Coast

8 Reasons to Take a Family Vacation in Kauai - Na Pali Coast

One of the best attractions on Kauai is the Na Pali Coast. This is a fabulous seventeen-mile stretch of coastline. There are so many things you can do on the Na Pali Coast. Start with a hike or boat ride. Then consider a helicopter tour to see everything from a different vantage point.

Experiencing the Royal Coconut Coast

If you can’t get enough of the coastlines, you will be happy to know that Kauai is also home to the Royal Coconut Coast. This coastline is on the east side of the island. You will discover numerous historic areas amongst the coconut trees on this beautiful coast in Kauai.

Incredible Shopping

Local stores are everywhere on the island of Kauai. One of the best places to go shopping is Kinipopo Shopping Village. You will find this shopping destination on the Royal Coconut Coast. During your shopping adventures, you will find everything from jewelry and clothing to works of art.

Spectacular Waterfalls

Some of the best waterfalls in the world can be seen during a family vacation in Kauai. Numerous waterfalls can be seen at Mount Waialeale. You must hike three miles to reach those waterfalls. Unless you take a helicopter tour to see the waterfalls from above.

Another popular waterfall in Kauai is Wailua Falls.

Impressive Waimea Canyon

Waimea Canyon is often called the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. This canyon is fourteen miles long and one mile wide. Inside the canyon, you can discover waterfalls, gorges, and dense forests. One of the best ways to see it all is by following the hiking trails.

These are eight of the main reasons to take a family vacation in Kauai. You will notice that I didn’t mention anything about any of these areas on the island being crowded. This is because crowds barely exist on this beautiful Hawaiian Island.

So, are you ready to book a family vacation in Kauai?

Hiking is an excellent way to see the natural wonders of a destination you are visiting during a family vacation. While there are millions of hiking trails all around the world, the Hawaiian Islands have some amazing trails that will truly pique your interest. Each one of the Hawaiian Islands offers something unique when it comes to the great outdoors. But it is hiking in Kauai that really offers the option of exploring paradise. Your hiking adventures can include time in lush rainforests, expansive valleys, and even the wet areas of the local bogs. There is no way to tell exactly what you will see or experience when you are out on the trails in Kauai, but I can tell you that the memories you are creating will last a lifetime!

Best Hikes in Kauai that May Lead to Beautiful Hawaiian Waterfalls

Waialeale Blue Hole Hike

One of the best waterfall hikes on Kauai is the Waialeale Blue Hole Hike. This hike can take a full day to conquer. However, you will consider that time is well spent when you reach the base of Mt. Waialeale. This is where the Blue Hole is located. All along that area, it appears as if the wall is weeping. Water pours out and flows towards the canyon below. It is best to hire a guide for this hiking adventure. The weather can change rapidly in this area, and when it does, the hiking conditions can become treacherous. A local guide will notice these changes a lot sooner than you will and can alert you that it is time to turn around.

Kuilau Ridge Trail

The Kuilau Ridge Trail is an easy two-mile hiking trail in Kauai. When you reach the viewpoint on this trail, you will be rewarded with gorgeous views of the valley below. This is a very peaceful hike, so if you are looking for a little solitude on your family vacation, this is the place to go.

Sleeping Giant Hike

The Sleeping Giant Hike is also known as the Nounou Mountain Trail. Your journey on this hiking trail in Kauai begins with your family going through a tunnel of trees. It will feel slightly eerie until you hit the area of the pine forest where the sun shines through. While this is not a long hike, you may want to plan for a half day, so you can enjoy a picnic lunch at the summit.

Wailua Falls Hike

The Wailua Falls Hike is another waterfall hike in Kauai. The distance of this trail is quite short. However, there is a steep incline that can be very muddy and slippery. Therefore, it is best to use caution when venturing out on this hiking trail. While the view of the waterfall from the viewpoint is stunning, I recommend going down to the bottom where the pool is. You can carefully go behind the falls to experience the rush of water from a different vantage point. Or you can simply swim near the edges of the pool as you relax to the sounds of the rushing water.

Makaleha Falls Hike

If your family loves adventures, the Makaleha Falls Hike is one you will never forget! The trail is just over two and a half miles and leads you through a muddy jungle. This hike can be challenging with its boulders, massive roots and vines, and mossy rocks. There are multiple river crossings, so make sure you wear shoes and clothing that you don’t mind getting wet and covered in mud. The numerous waterfalls at the end make the entire journey worthwhile.

Ho’opi’I Falls Hike

Many people think that the Ho’opi’I Falls Hike is over-rated, but if your family has seen Jurassic Park, it is a must-do. This hiking trail in Kauai is short, but it gives you the opportunity to see two waterfalls. The first is perfect for cliff diving, as long as you are with a local who knows where the rocks are located in the water below. The second waterfall is the one that was used in Jurassic Park.

Hanakapiai Falls Trail

One of the most popular hikes in Kauai is the Hanakapiai Falls Trail. This trail will take you all the way to the Hanakapiai Waterfall, which is more than three hundred feet high. This trail along the Napali Coast will have you climbing uphill as you deal with roots, mud, and boulders. The most stunning part of the trail is in between Ke’e Beach and Hanakapiai Beach. The red rock path is quite the contrast to the sparkling blue water of the ocean. You must remember to take your camera with you when your family hikes this trail to the waterfall.

Honopu Ridge Trail

Over in Koke’e State Park, you will find the Honopu Ridge Trail. This trail is five miles long and is well-marked. There are multiple low-lying shrubs and plants along the trail, so it is recommended that you wear pants for the hike. I recommend you choose a nice clear day to hike the Honopu Ridge Trail. If it is too cloudy, you won’t be rewarded with fabulous views!

These are some of the best hikes in Kauai, and you can see that many of them lead to beautiful Hawaiian waterfalls. I would love to know if any of the hikes in Kauai would be on your list of things to do during your next family vacation on this Hawaiian Island. Or if there is another hike in Kauai, you have been wanting to do with your family? I would also love to know your thoughts on other activities you are interested in when vacationing in Hawaii.

Out of all the Hawaiian Islands, Kauai has managed to preserve the cultures, traditions, and even values of the locals who have called the island home for many years. Every town on this island is small. All the buildings are considered short when compared to other cities around the world. And the only way to reach this island is by an inter-island flight since the locals blocked what could have been a lucrative ferry service to Kauai. Don’t let the lack of massive buildings and ferry service squash your beliefs about Kauai, though! There are plenty of incredible adventures you can take with your family. And you can enjoy the laidback lifestyle and delectable foods at the same time!

History on the Island of Kauai

The island of Kauai was formed more than five million years ago. An active hot spot from below the Pacific Tectonic Plate spewed magma up into the air. When that magma landed, it formed this island, as well as the other Hawaiian Islands. The Polynesians were the first people to live on Kauai. However, it is the traditions and cultures of the Tahitians, who arrived on Kauai many years later, that you will experience today during your visit. Europeans arrived on the island of Kauai in the late 1700s. They brought new trades and business ideas to the island. However, none of them could erase the significant history that was already in place on the island of Kauai.

Weather in Kauai

As with all the other Hawaiian Islands, Kauai only has two seasons. Those two seasons are summer and winter. And while there are two distinct seasons on this island, you can’t really tell the difference between the two. The reason for this is the temperatures are only a few degrees apart.

Summer in Kauai

Summer in Kauai is slightly warmer, so you will see the thermometer rise if you vacation there at this time of the year. There is also less rain in Kauai during the summer months. If you happen to stay on the East or North Shore, you will still get more rain than you would on the Southern shoreline.

Winter in Kauai

The winter months in Kauai bring a lot more rain, especially on the North and East Shore. The temperatures will also decrease slightly, but it never really gets below the 70s. Visiting during the winter months may mean lots of rain, but it is excellent for seeing lush flowers and other foliage.

Best Time to Vacation in Kauai

The best time to vacation in Kauai is either between the months of April and June or September and November. The temperatures are quite mild during those months, so you won’t need to deal with the extreme heat on the island. Plus, the cost of airfare and accommodations is lower during these times of the year.

What to Pack for a Family Vacation in Kauai

Most of the time, a family vacation in Hawaii is going to include packing a lot of shorts, t-shirts, and sundresses. A vacation on the island of Kauai, though is also going to include raincoats and umbrellas. The extra rain you will experience when on this island will not put a damper on your plans if you are dressed accordingly!

Places to Stay While on a Kauai Vacation with Family

Resorts are a popular option for accommodations when vacationing in Kauai with your family. However, I can also search for bed and breakfasts and vacation rental homes and condos for your stay. I understand that every family is unique. This is the main reason why I don’t only work with one resort or one resort brand. I prefer to customize every vacation for your personal needs, and that includes where you will all lay your head down at night!

Foods You Must Try While on Vacation in Kauai

One of my favorite parts of traveling is getting to try new foods! Even if you have a family of picky eaters, there is going to be at least one local food that everyone will love. A few of the must-try foods in Kauai include:

  • Taro – Taro is a vegetable that has been included in Hawaiian dishes for many years. You can eat the entire plant. The leaves are similar to kale and spinach. The roots are used the most often, though. Most of the time, taro is included in poi dishes. The roots are normally steamed and have a sour taste.
  • Lilikoi – Lilikoi is the Hawaiian term for passion fruit. While you can eat lilikoi on its own, I recommend having lilikoi pie. If you decide you love lilikoi, you can purchase lilikoi mustard, syrup, and jelly to take home with you.
  • Lomi Lomi Salmon – In Hawaiian, lomi lomi means to massage. So, with this dish, your salted salmon will be massaged before being mixed with green onion, sweet onion, and tomatoes. The locals mix their lomi lomi salmon with kalua pork and poi to create what they call a broke mouth ono.
  • Puka Dog – The puka dog is considered the Hawaiian hot dog. A Polish sausage is tucked into a piece of toasted Hawaiian sweet bread. While that would be delicious enough, what really makes this dish is the numerous toppings! A garlic lemon sauce is put on first, and then you can choose from a few sweet fruit toppings. I prefer mango or pineapple, but papaya, banana, star fruit, and coconut are also options.

Activities to Embrace While on Vacation in Kauai

You may be tempted to spend long lazy days at the beaches on the island of Kauai. However, I recommend adding so much more to your family’s itinerary! After all, where else in the world can you paddle into sea caves, swim with turtles inside a sparkling cove, and hike deep down into a canyon to see a waterfall?

Other incredible family activities to embrace while on vacation in Kauai include:

  • Ziplining through the tops of trees in the forest
  • Helicopter rides down into the valleys
  • Paddling along a sacred river
  • ATV rides
  • Attending a Luau
  • Mountain tubing
  • Snorkeling
  • Swimming
  • Boat tours
  • Train rides through plantations
  • Wander through botanical gardens
  • Horseback riding tours
  • Cross a Swinging Bridge

Top Places to See While on Vacation in Kauai

There is so much to see and do when you are on a family vacation in Kauai. I don’t want you to spend hours searching to find the best places to visit, so I thought I would share the three must-visit destinations on the island of Kauai.

Waimea Canyon

Waimea Canyon is near Koke’e State Park, and it is easy to check both these destinations off your list in one day. The canyon is considered the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. It is fourteen miles wide and more than three thousand feet deep. If you are looking for a picturesque landscape, you can’t go wrong with a visit to Waimea Canyon. The craggy cliffs, crested buttes, and lush vegetation will overwhelm your senses. Just don’t forget to seek out the rivers and waterfalls that will take your visit to the next level. This is an excellent location for hiking too. I recommend the Waipo’o Falls Trail or the Cliff Trail Lookout, but any of them will provide an afternoon of adventure for your family.

Hanalei Bay

If you are staying in an exclusive resort during your vacation in Kauai, you are most likely in the Hanalei Bay area. There are three beaches in this area, and they all lead to the others. Therefore, you can begin at Waioli Beach Park before wandering down to either Black Pot Beach or Hanalei Beach Park. These beaches offer lots of sandy space, so they never seem too crowded. You must be aware that Hanalei Bay is a favorite of the local surfers though, so you will want to be prepared for extra people during the height of the surfing season.

Napali Coast

This coastline can be found on the northwest shoreline of Kauai. The Napali Coast is seventeen miles long and is filled with massive steep rocky cliffs. You cannot travel along this coastline in a car. Instead, you must choose to either hike to see the natural beauty of the area or plan to take a boat or helicopter tour. I must warn you that the hike along the Kalalau Trail is quite strenuous. If you are not an experienced hiker, it is best to choose one of the other tour options I mentioned above.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Family Vacation in Kauai

I know you want to have the best vacation ever when you are over on the island of Kauai. To make sure that happens, I have decided to share a few tips that will help you get the most out of your family vacation in Kauai.

  • Rent a Vehicle – Public transportation on Kauai isn’t very good, so I always recommend renting a car when you are vacationing on this island.
  • Practice Travel Pono – Travel pono means to travel righteously when you are in Kauai. Basically, it means do not litter, be respectful of the land, and leave every space cleaner than it was when you arrived. This will ensure the island will stay beautiful for many years to come.
  • Keep an Open Mind When Experiencing the Culture – While you will learn so much about the culture in Kauai, you will also learn so much more about yourself at the same time.
  • Be Safe When Exploring – You may want to simply hit the open road when you are vacationing in Kauai, but it is best to be prepared for many different scenarios before you do. I recommend checking out the current weather conditions before venturing out for the day. This will ensure you do not get stuck in a storm or have hotter weather than you were prepared for.

These are many of the things you must know before planning a fabulous vacation in Kauai! I want you to know that you do not need to plan this vacation on your own. As an expert travel advisor, I can customize your dream family vacation in Kauai for you!

The natural beauty of Kauai is enough to draw anyone there for a fabulous vacation. After all, who can resist exploring the Na Pali Coast, swimming in the ocean, and relaxing on the beach? There is so much more to the island of Kauai, though. When you decide that your next family vacation must be on Kauai, I can help you find some of the best adventures. One of those adventures can be exploring the island and finding some of the best waterfalls on Kauai.

Best Waterfalls in Kauai

Wailua Falls

One of the most spectacular waterfalls in Kauai happens to be Wailua Falls. You can see this waterfall from the comfort of your car. Honestly, though, I know you want to feel the mist on your face, so it is best to walk towards the waterfall. If this waterfall in Kauai looks familiar, it is because it was filmed for the original Fantasy Island television show. You can easily visit Wailua Falls at any time of the day. I prefer to check this waterfall on Kauai out early in the morning, though. That is when a pretty rainbow forms, as the mist flies everywhere.

Opaekaa Falls

This is another waterfall in Kauai that you can see from your car. It is best to make the thirty-minute hike along the trail, though, so you can see this waterfall up close. There are two tiers to Opaekaa Falls. I recommend taking a picnic lunch or snack with you, so you can enjoy the view of the falls while you eat.

Hoolea Falls

Depending on where you stay while on vacation in Kauai, you may be really close to Hoolea Falls. This waterfall can be found directly behind Kalalau Beach. The water from the falls runs down a volcanic rock wall. As a parent, I recommend you scope out the area first before taking your children to see this waterfall. It is common for the locals in this area to show a little too much skin as they are enjoying the water from the falls.

Hanakapiai Falls

A trip to Hanakapiai Beach must include a hike to the waterfall of the same name. The four-mile round trip trail to this waterfall is moderately difficult, thanks to potentially slippery conditions. The scenery during your hike will be amazing, though. And you will love swimming in the pool under the waterfall when you arrive at your destination.

Kalihiwai Falls

The rushing water of Kalihiwai Falls is surrounded by a lush forest. While you can drive to this waterfall in Kauai, your family may prefer hiking or horseback riding there instead. This is a multi-tiered waterfall, so make sure you take pictures from multiple angles for the best memories.

Mount Waialeale Falls

This massive waterfall is very difficult to reach from land. There are no trails to follow at all. Therefore, it is best to have me secure a helicopter tour that will take you directly over this waterfall in Kauai.

Uluwehi Falls

Uluwehi Falls can be found on the Wailua River. This waterfall is commonly called the Secret Falls because the area is quite secluded. Hopefully, your family is up to the challenge of reaching this waterfall if you add it to your list of things to do in Kauai. Your journey will begin with a fifty-minute kayak ride and end with a thirty-minute strenuous and challenging hike complete with drops. This adventure is only for those who are used to difficult hiking trails.

These are some of the best waterfalls on Kauai. You may not want to have them all on your list of things to do for your next family vacation in Kauai. However, I know at least one or two will make your list.

The beauty of Kauai is so extraordinary you cannot replicate it anywhere else in the world. Yes, you can come close to certain sights in many destinations. But when you add all the gorgeous sights together on this island, no other destination has the sheer volume of beauty as Kauai. In fact, it is the rushing waterfalls, lush vegetation, looming mountains, and jaw-dropping canyons that bring travelers like yourself to this island year after year. And once you consider all the outdoor family adventures, cultures and traditions, and delicious foods, you may find yourself never wanting to leave this piece of paradise to return home. Especially once you are experiencing the best things to do on Kauai!

Best Things to Do in Kauai During Your Next Family Vacation

Explore Waimea Canyon

Waimea Canyon has long been called the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. Volcanic flow created this massive canyon over the years. Its size is currently ten miles long and two miles wide. Add the thirty-six hundred feet of depth and it stands out from the rest of the scenery on the island of Kauai. There are two ways to see Waimea Canyon from the ground. The first is by car. It is the easiest way to see the entire canyon, since you can stop at multiple lookouts during your drive. The second option is to take one of the numerous hiking trails and walk. Some of the hiking trails are easy, while others are quite challenging. I recommend starting with the Cliff Trail Lookout and the Waipo’o Falls Trail.

Ride an ATV at Kipu Ranch

Kipu Ranch is currently a working ranch with three thousand acres. While this ranch has been mainly a cattle ranch, for some time, it was used to grow sugarcane. There is no other way to explore this land that the Hawaiian monarchy once owned except by ATV. You must be with a tour guide during your visit to explore this ranch. The number of people allowed to visit the ranch each day is limited. However, if you plan ahead, you can learn about the history of this land, as well as all the movies filmed on the property. A couple of the most popular movies include Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Descendants, and The Lost World.

Experience Hawaii’s Ambiance at Kilohana Plantation

Do you have a long list of things to do while vacationing on the island of Kauai? Most likely, you do, and some of the things you want to do include hiking in a rainforest, riding a historic train, and attending a luau. Well, at Kilohana Plantation, you can do all those things and so much more!

You will want to have your day planned out prior to arriving at this plantation. If you don’t, it will be too easy to miss out on some of the activities. It is best to hike through the rainforest before enjoying a meal at the restaurant and tasting some island-made rum. Afterward, you can hop on the Kauai Plantation Railway for a two-and-a-half-mile train ride.

At the end of the day, you must attend the Luau Kalamaku. This is the best luau on the island. Since the show is performed in a circle, there are no bad seats. During the performance, you can watch fifty dancers and musicians show off their talents. While they are all amazing, I recommend you pay close attention to the fire knife dancer.

Relax on the Beach

There are forty-three beaches on the island of Kauai. You can easily visit any of them during your stay and have a fabulous time. However, if you are looking for something specific within a beach, I have a couple of recommendations. Po’ipu Beach is perfect for families who want to swim, snorkel, and see turtles sunbathing on the sand. Salt Pond Beach Park is another family-friendly beach. It is all about the water sports over at Kalapaki Beach, though. If you want to learn how to surf or do a little wave riding or simply want to swim, canoe or sail, Kalapaki Beach is the spot for your family!

Check Out the Lighthouse and Animals at Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge

Gorgeous views, an abundance of wildlife, and the Kilauea Lighthouse are all waiting for you at the Kilauea National Wildlife Refuge. While the kids probably won’t be thrilled with a lighthouse constructed back in 1913, they will love the wide-open spaces for wandering around. Plus, the wildlife makes it an adventure! During your visit, you can potentially see the endangered Hawaiian goose, Hawaiian seabirds, Hawaiian monk seals, and green turtles. And if you plan your visit for the winter months, the humpback whales will be in the nearby water too.

Take a Helicopter Tour of the Island of Kauai

If you are looking to see the island of Kauai from a different perspective, it is best to sign up for a helicopter tour. These tours are one of the best ways to see the waterfalls, Waimea Canyon, and the spectacular Napali Coast.

Go Hiking in Koke’e State Park

The very best hiking trails in Kauai can be found in Koke’e State Park. The most popular hiking trail is the Awa’awaphui Trail. This is a six-mile trail that offers gorgeous views of the Napali Coast once you reach the overlook. The Nua’lolo Trail is another fantastic hiking trail in Koke’e State Park. It is approximately seven and a half miles long and is challenging. You can tackle both trails in one day by doing the full loop. However, make sure you leave early enough in the day because it is a true daylong hike.

Cruise the Napali Coast

Another unique way to see the island of Kauai, especially the Napali Coast, is via boat. I can help you find a boat tour that is perfect for your family. Whether you want to snorkel, kayak, or simply take a scenic cruise, there is a boat tour along the Napali Coast for you!

Grab a Selfie with Wailua Falls

There may be multiple waterfalls on the island of Kauai, but not many of them are easily accessible. You can actually drive to Wailua Falls. Make sure you take your camera with you, though, because you won’t want to miss out on having pictures of this majestic place.

Watch the Water Shoot Up at the Spouting Horn Blowhole

Kids of all ages will love watching the water shoot up from the ground at the Spouting Horn Blowhole. This blowhole is similar to a geyser and is just as unpredictable. You never know when the water will erupt into the air, so you may need to wait patiently at the viewpoint for a little bit.

These are only a few of the best things to do in Kauai during your next family vacation. I have so many other ideas I can share with you as we are planning your Kauai itinerary.
