Acadia National Park is the only national park in New England. The beauty within this park makes up for the fact there is no other national park for miles. A visit to Acadia National Park will have you wondering why anyone would want to visit any other national park in the country. Mainly because there is so much to do and see here. Plus, with so many extraordinary views, you may think you have finally found the piece of paradise you have always been looking for during your next family vacation.

Acadia National Park: Things to Do During Your Family Vacation

Watch the Sunrise in Acadia National Park

Acadia National Park: Things to Do During Your Family Vacation - Sunrise from Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park

Watching the sunrise from anywhere in Acadia National Park during your family vacation will take your breath away. However, if you want the best experience, I recommend going over to Cadillac Mountain early one day.

You must start your journey to the summit of Cadillac Mountain early in the morning. But your reward will be the first light to touch the east coast during certain days of the year. If you are not a morning person, you can always choose to watch the sunset instead.

Use my travel guide to help you start planning a family vacation in Maine.

Stop at the Hulls Cove Visitor Center

Most people will skip over the visitor centers at the national parks, due to the crowding. I always stop at them though, because they are jam-packed with important information that allows me to enjoy my visits so much more.

So, take my advice and visit Hulls Cove Visitor Center to talk to a ranger before you venture out to explore Acadia National Park.

Go Hiking on the Trails in Acadia National Park

There are so many different hiking trails to choose from within Acadia National Park. You will definitely not be able to do them all during your family vacation. However, you should be able to do a couple.

I recommend the Precipice Trail, which is just over two miles long. The Beehive Trail is a little shorter at a mile and a half. Plus, it is not as high as the former trail, which is good if you are scared of heights.

Check out these other hiking trails in Acadia National Park.

Take a Drive Along the Scenic Park Loop

Acadia National Park: Things to Do During Your Family Vacation - Scenic Park Loop in Acadia National Park

The scenic park loop in Acadia National Park is one of the best things you can do during your family vacation in Maine. This road is twenty-seven miles long.

You can see many attractions and landmarks during your drive. A few of the most notable things you will see include Cadillac Mountain, Otter Cliff, Sand Beach, Jordan Pond, and Thunder Hole.

I recommend you plan on at least half a day for this drive, so you can make as many stops along the way as you wish.

Check out this 8-day itinerary for an amazing family vacation in Maine that includes a visit to Acadia National Park.

Visit Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse

The most popular attraction in Acadia National Park is the Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse. There are two trails that lead to this lighthouse. They are both just over a mile long. Although, one is steeper than the other.

The Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse is still in operation, but you cannot go inside. You can take pictures though. I recommend taking advantage of the many different vantage points. This ensures you capture the best shots to frame when you get home from your family vacation.

These are some of the best things to do in Acadia National Park during your next family vacation in Maine. I can recommend so many other things to do for your family trip too. After all, I want to make sure you have the best family vacation when you travel through the state of Maine.

So, are you ready to have me create a personalized family vacation itinerary for your next trip to Maine or another destination?

Happy New Year! A new year means a fresh slate filled with opportunities to make memories with your family. I recommend taking the time to plan out your next family vacation. Especially if you can choose to visit Acadia National Park in Maine. Acadia National Park is so beautiful. One of the best ways to see all the views is by following one of the incredible hiking trails in Acadia National Park. With so many different hiking trails, there will be one that your entire family will want to do. However, you may have a difficult time determining which trails you should add to your list in Acadia National Park. They will all look so appealing.

Best Hiking Trails in Acadia National Park

South Bubble to Bubble Rock

Best Hiking Trails in Acadia National Park - Jordan Pond in Acadia National Park in Maine

This fairly easy one-mile hike will take you all the way to Bubble Rock. There you will see incredible views of Jordan Pond.

There are a few drops off areas on this hiking trail in Acadia National Park. So, your entire family will want to be careful as you are hiking along.

Check out these other things to do in Acadia National Park during your family vacation.

Ocean Path – Gorgeous Views Available from This Hiking Trail in Acadia National Park

The Ocean Path trail goes from Sand Beach to Otter Point or vice versa. It is an easy two-mile hike each way.

You will see many featured spots on this hiking trail in Acadia National Park. And a couple of them include Otter Cliffs, Monument Cove, and Thunder Hole.

Cadillac Mountain Loop – An Easy Hiking Trail in Acadia National Park

This hiking trail is only a half mile long. This is because you can drive most of the way up this mountain.

However, the panoramic views from this trail make the short journey worthwhile. This is a popular spot in Acadia National Park. So, plan your visit for a time other than the early morning and mid-day if you want to avoid the crowds.

Precipice Trail

The Precipice Trail is two and a half miles long. It is a quite challenging hiking trail in Acadia National Park.

Once you have reached the end of this hiking trail, I recommend connecting with the Champlain North Ridge Trail. Doing this loop is much easier than trying to backtrack along the Precipice Trail to reach your car.

Beehive Trail

Best Hiking Trails in Acadia National Park - Beehive Mountain in Acadia National Park in Maine

The Beehive Trail is much easier to do than the Precipice Trail. It is not as steep either.

This is still a challenging trail though, so do not think it will be a simple walk you can do without a sweat. The Beehive Trail is slightly more than a mile in length, but you can add another half mile if you venture over to The Bowl.

Jordan Pond Path

This flat hiking trail in Acadia National Park is perfect for all members of your family. The Jordan Pond Path is just over three miles long.

I happen to love this hike, because I can stop at the Jordan House Restaurant for a bite to eat afterward.

Jordan Cliffs Trail

If the Jordan Pond Path seems too easy or too crowded, you may want to consider the Jordan Cliffs Trail. This three-and-a-half-mile trail will take a lot of work on your end, but the views and the experience are worthwhile.

Ladder Trail – The Most Difficult Hiking Trail in Acadia National Park

The Ladder Trail is one of the most brutal hiking trails in Acadia National Park. You will feel as if all you are doing is climbing stairs all the way to the summit.

However, that feeling will change on occasion when you are climbing ladders instead of those steps. This trail is almost three and a half miles long and it is best to pace yourself in the beginning or you will never make it to the end.

These are the best hiking trails in Acadia National Park, but they are not the only ones you should consider during your visit. I would love to help you find the hiking trails your family will love the most for your vacation. If you are new to hiking or simply looking for a new experience for your next family vacation, Acadia National Park has so many options for you to choose from. Let me help you figure out the details, so you can simply relax and enjoy a fabulous family vacation during your busy life.

So, are you ready to have me create a personalized family vacation itinerary for your next trip to Maine or another destination?

Are you ready to pack up the kids, or the adult kids with the grandkids, and head to the coast of Maine for a few days? A vacation in Maine with family will allow you to spend time outside. You can all wander through a national park. Head out on a boat ride. And swim in the Gulf of Maine. The best part though is you can make a few memories that everyone will remember for a lifetime. There are so many things to do in Maine. Today, I am sharing an itinerary that will show you only a few of the possibilities. This itinerary will get you thinking about what your family will want to do during a vacation in Maine. I can then use some of your ideas to personalize an itinerary for your family vacation in Maine

Experience an 8 Day Vacation in Maine with Family

Day One: Portland

Your family adventures in Maine will begin once you arrive in Portland. After checking into your hotel, walk around to stretch your legs. This is the perfect time to explore. Maybe head over to the Eastern Promenade. Or check out one of the many Portland Lighthouses.

Portland Head Light at Fort Williams Park is the most popular. But don’t skip the history at the Portland Breakwater Lighthouse.

Day Two: Portland

The kids will love spending a little time having fun at the Children’s Museum and Theatre. The hands-on exhibits will have everyone in the family learning about science, technology, and engineering.

From there, you can grab lunch at Old Port. Or simply do a little shopping before enjoying a picnic at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens.

Day Three: Portland

Experience an 8 Day Amazing Vacation in Maine with Family - Blueberry Cake

As long as it is not raining, day three of your family vacation in Maine is perfect for heading out to an island in Boothbay Harbor. You can enjoy a traditional clambake on the island. This is where you will dine on delicious seafood, as well as Maine’s best blueberry cake.

Once you have returned to the mainland, head to the Portland Observatory. This is where you can see fabulous views of the harbor. You may even spot the island you were just all visiting!

Day Four: Bar Harbor

Your day will begin with a quick journey from Portland to Bar Harbor, Maine. After a quick check in at your hotel, you can choose to explore either Maine Wildlife Park or Camden.

At the wildlife park, you can visit the different native animals that were injured and cannot be returned to the wild. Over in Camden, it will be all about the High Street Historic District or hiking within Camden Hills State Park.

Day Five: Bar Harbor

It will be hard to believe that your family vacation in Maine is more than half over on this beautiful day. Today’s adventures will take you to Northeast Harbor. After a morning of exploring, take your picnic lunch to Agamont Park. Watch the boats out on the water, as you eat, talk, and laugh. The memories you will make on this day will be priceless!

Day Six: Bar Harbor

You cannot take a family vacation in Maine and not spend at least one day in Acadia National Park. I recommend taking a guided tour of this national park. This will allow you to learn about its geology, history, and wildlife.

However, you can explore Acadia National Park on your own. Maybe go for a hike.

Before heading back to your hotel, stop at the Egg Rock Lighthouse. This square lighthouse is one of the most unique ones in Maine.

Day Seven: Bar Harbor

Okay, so you made memories during a traditional clambake on this family vacation. But how about making even more memories while heading out on a lobstering boat ride? Your lobster boat captain will explain everything you need to know about lobstering. Plus, you get to see seals and bald eagles while out on the water.

Day Eight: Bar Harbor

Depending on the time of your flight, you may have a little time to say goodbye to your favorite sights in Bar Harbor before your flight. And if not, at least your whole family will have the memories you made during your family vacation in Maine.

So, are you ready to have me create a personalized family vacation itinerary in Maine or another destination for your next trip?

Are you ready to plan an incredible family vacation in Maine this year? I completely understand your desire to get away and can tell you that Maine is perfect for families looking to disconnect from it all on vacation! There are plenty of outdoor adventures in the state of Maine. But in addition to the wooded areas, you will find spectacular beaches next to the sparkling ocean. That means you can have a little of everything when you spend a few days, a week, or even a couple of weeks reconnecting with your family on your next vacation.

Plan Your Family Vacation in Maine with My Travel Guide

History in Maine

Maine has quite a long history, with the European settlers arriving on the shoreline back in 1525. Those Europeans did not settle in the area, though. The first European settlement ended up being in 1604. Unfortunately, a war broke out between the Europeans, or I should say the French and the Indian tribes living in the area. The French were defeated in that war and chose to form close bonds with the Indians instead of leaving the area.

For years, the area we now know as Maine was considered part of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. It wasn’t until March 15, 1820, that Maine became the 23rd state. There weren’t as many people left in Maine by the time it became a state because a lot of people chose to head out west. Ohio Fever caused numerous people to choose to venture west for warmer weather.

The locals who remained were thrilled with the lumber and shipbuilding boost that arrived with the California Gold Rush. However, people on the ships that took the goods to California ended up staying out there.

Nowadays, more than a million people live in the state of Maine. And that number grows every summer as travelers arrive to enjoy the beauty this part of the country is known for.

Weather in Maine

Spring in Maine

Maine’s location up in the far northeast makes it difficult to leave the snow and frost behind too early in the spring. Therefore, you should expect cool temperatures and a chance of frost through the end of April. This season begins with temperatures averaging 55 degrees, while May brings temperatures in the middle 60s.

Summer in Maine

The months of June through September are considered summer in Maine. Most days are warm during this time of the year, but it is not unusual to have a 90-degree day or two during the summer. Of course, the water in the ocean never catches up to the air temperatures, so you should expect that to be cold the entire season.

Fall in Maine

The days might still be warm during the month of September and even October during the fall. But the nights have a crisp coolness that allows the leaves to start changing color. The temperatures drop quickly from there, with daytime highs in the 40s by November. In fact, you may even see some snow flying around during the months of October and November.

Winter in Maine

Winter is long in the state of Maine, especially when the snow arrives early. Daytime temperatures will only reach 30 to 40 degrees, with the temperatures dropping to almost zero at night. Gray is the color of choice during the winter, yet the sun will peak out on occasion. Just don’t expect to see the sun too late in the day because the winter months have it setting by four in the afternoon.

What to Pack for a Vacation in Maine

When you decide to take a family vacation in Maine, you will have to pack according to the season you are visiting in. The summer months will have you wearing shorts, t-shirts, sundresses, and sandals. During the fall, winter, and spring, it will be all about pants, sweaters, sweatshirts, hats, gloves, and boots. Extra layers are necessary during the winter months, too, especially if you plan on being outside a lot.

Hiking will require hiking boots, while white water rafting and other water activities will require additional clothing for when you get wet. And don’t forget towels, which are helpful at any time of the year.

Activities to Embrace While on Vacation in Maine

There are so many different activities you can do with your family when you are on vacation in Maine. One of the first things you will want to do when you arrive is to walk along the shoreline. Of course, this is only if you are spending time by the ocean. If you are closer to destinations like Acadia National Park, you may prefer to hike the trails or drive around the scenic loop.

There are numerous biking trails you must consider if your entire family loves to ride bikes. The Kennebec River Rail Trail is an all-time favorite. Be prepared, though, because it is six and a half miles long. Don’t worry; you can do a section of it at a time so you do not get too tired out.

Whale watching is another fun family activity when you are vacationing in Maine. We must plan your trip carefully if you want to go whale watching though. These majestic creatures are only in the water along this shoreline from the middle of April until the end of September.

Other incredible family activities in Maine include:

  • Apple or Strawberry Picking
  • White Water Rafting
  • Skiing
  • Hiking to Waterfalls
  • Waterpark Adventures

Top Places to See on Vacation in Maine

Places to See in Maine - LL Bean Boot

Choosing which attractions to place at the top of your list of things to see in Maine is going to be a struggle. There are so many amazing attractions and destinations, and they aren’t close to each other. Depending on your personal top places, we may need to be a little creative when it comes to getting you to them all. No worries, though, because I can plan the perfect family vacation despite the logistical conundrum.

One of the top places on your list must be Acadia National Park. This impressive park has it all, including gorgeous sights and thrilling adventures. I recommend arriving at the park very early one morning, so you can watch the sun as it begins to rise. When you add this activity to your list of things to do, you will be one of the first people to watch the sunrise in the entire country!

Over in Portland’s Old Port, you will discover a ton of history along the cobblestone streets. The older colonial buildings are now home to numerous restaurants, shops, and breweries. People-watching is a must in this destination, so plan an extra hour or two for a different type of family activity.

If you have kids that are scared of nothing and brave, you may want to try tackling the Allagash Waterway with them. This 92-mile stretch of water will take you to the tucked-away spaces in the state. You can easily canoe or kayak as much of this waterway as you wish, with trips ranging from one day to ten days.

Winter months must be spent over at Sugarloaf and Sunday River. The skiing is the best in that part of the state, and the snowboarding isn’t too bad either!

Other spectacular places to see in Maine include:

  • Pemaquid Point Lighthouse
  • Desert of Maine
  • Kennebunkport
  • Stephen King’s Home
  • The Giant Boot at LL Bean
  • Lenny the Chocolate Moose at Len Libby Candies
  • Mount Katahdin
  • Cabbage Island

Amazing Festivals You Can’t-Miss in Maine

Most of the festivals you find in Maine are going to be all about the food! This shouldn’t be surprising since delicious food is everywhere in this state!

Maine Whoopie Pie Festival

Yes, there is a Whoopie Pie Festival in Maine! If you do not know what a whoopie pie is, let me share. Imagine two soft chocolate cookies stuffed with a delectable creamy filling that will have your mouth watering from the very first bite. This festival has taken place since 2009, and since the whoopie pie is now the official state treat, this festival isn’t stopping any time soon.

The day begins with a 3K walk or run, so you can earn your whoopie pie of the day. Afterward, you can wander around to see what the one hundred different vendors are offering as you listen to live music in the background. You definitely won’t want to miss being a participant in the whoopie pie eating contest in the afternoon!

Maine Potato Blossom Festival

The Maine Potato Blossom Festival is a 9-day event that is held every July. There are eighty-five different events for you to attend, although you will need to choose between a few that are happening at the same time. A few of the most popular options include the BBQ Cook-Off, live entertainment, yard sales throughout the town, and interactive exhibits. The fireworks over the river are the perfect ending to this festival.

Kennebunkport Festival

This is one of the festivals held in Maine every year that donates to local charities. This weeklong event is filled with art, culture, and food. As you are walking around, you can listen to live music or stop to watch one of the performances. You must attend a cocktail hour, as well as a dinner during this week of fun. After all, the proceeds are going to a good cause!

Between work, school, sports, and other activities, your family probably does not have too much downtime throughout the year. However, the cherished summer months are the perfect time to escape since school is out and certain activities slow down. If you have been wanting to take a family vacation for a while, you might be wondering what the five most popular summer vacation destinations are. Well, I have found them for you. And I can say that they are perfect if you are looking to spend more time with family while reconnecting with each other.

5 Most Popular Summer Vacation Destinations in the US

National Parks

There are four hundred and twenty-three national parks, and you may want to see if your family can visit them all. Just not in one summer! Seriously though, visiting a national park during the summer is like hitting the lotto. Your family gets to spend time outside in nature. That time can be spent viewing wildlife, discovering different ecosystems, or simply hiking along the trails.

The best part about taking a vacation at a national park though is you practically get to choose your own family adventure. Most national parks offer something unique. And it may be that one unique thing that takes your family vacation to the next level. In Yellowstone, you can check out Od Faithful. It is all about the massive canyon at the Grand Canyon. And tall redwood trees are everywhere at Redwood National Park.

The sky is the limit when you take a summer vacation at any national park. Let me help you find the national park that will intrigue your family the most.

Alaska

Alaska is a spectacular destination at any time of the year. Whether you choose to cruise around the water or spend time on land, you will have an amazing time. However, the summer months bring out the best in this fabulous state. First, the weather is incredible in Alaska during the summer. The temperatures may not get out of the sixties, but that is considered warm for this part of the country.

The beautiful weather also brings sunshine almost around the clock. Imagine being able to go out exploring at midnight without needing to worry about bringing a flashlight! There are just so many more hours in the day when you choose to vacation in Alaska during the summer.

One of the most important reasons to visit Alaska during the summer though is the wildlife is quite active. The moose, bald eagles, bears, and other animals are wandering around looking for food.

Niagara Falls

A summer family vacation in Niagara Falls brings opportunities to explore not only the American side of the falls, but the Canadian side as well. Picnic lunches at Niagara Falls State Park on the US side are very popular. This is the oldest state park in the country. Besides enjoying a picnic lunch, your family can ride on the Maid of the Mist, wander along Old Falls Street USA, and explore the Cave of the Winds. And if you are still around for dinner, a meal at the Top of the Falls Restaurant is a must.

Over on the Canadian side, gorgeous views of the falls can be seen from the Skylon Tower. Clifton Hill is where many of the souvenir shops are located, and the casino is just steps away from there as well. While there are so many things to do on this side, your family will want to make sure the floral clock is near the top of your list.

Maine

A summer vacation in Maine can include time at Acadia National Park or a visit to the shoreline. There is so much more to this wonderful state though. Your days can be spent discovering art, culture, and attractions like the Thompson Ice House. Or you can check out the puffins, whales, and other wildlife that lives within the state.

There are plenty of lighthouses to discover, but it will be the fresh seafood that will have you hanging around this state for a few extra days. You may even decide to head out on the water to grab your own dinner one night!

Georgia

The state of Georgia is filled with family adventures. I recommend beginning with city life over in Atlanta and then making the drive over to Savannah to spend a little time on the coast. While you’re in Atlanta, you can drive up to Stone Mountain for a day. The kids will love the ropes courses, mini golf, and scenic train ride.

To get a little downtime in, the quaint town of Helen will have you thinking you stepped back in time. This Bavarian themed town is perfect for shopping, grabbing a bite to eat, and tubing adventures down the river.

When you arrive in Savannah, the kids won’t want to see the historic squares. However, they will be thrilled to grab souvenirs on River Street or over at the City Market. Your entire family will enjoy driving out to Tybee Island for a little time in the sand and to watch the dolphins out in the water.

These are the five most popular summer vacation destinations in the US. One of these destinations will be perfect for your next family vacation.

Cabbage Island has been owned by many different families since it was first purchased by Ezekiel Holbrook in 1901. When Ruth Leavitt, and her husband Donald, purchased the island back in 1948, she had a dream of offering clambakes on the island. Cabbage Island became a household name with those clambakes.

The tradition of hosting clambakes twice a day during the summer months continued for twenty-three years. The Leavitts sold the island in 1983 and it, unfortunately, sat abandoned until 1986. At that time, Wayne Moore purchased Cabbage Island. The locals really missed the clambakes, as did the tourists who arrived to experience them every year. They begged Moore to start them up once again.

Wayne Moore asked Ruth Leavitt for help getting the clambakes back up and running. He had a lot of help from the Boothbay Harbor community as well. The clambake tradition is now alive once again and you can easily travel to this island twice a day for clambakes from the month of June through September.

What to Expect During a Cabbage Island Clambake

When you decide you want to experience a Cabbage Island clambake, you will begin your adventure by boarding the Bennie Alice Ferry. A scenic tour of Boothbay Harbor is an excellent way to relax before the feasting of the day begins.

You will smell the clams, and the rest of the food, as soon as you arrive at Cabbage Island. When you sit down, you will be served succulent clams and lobsters. Those two things are steamed in seaweed and covered with rocks until they are cooked all the way through.

You will also find yourself dining on corn on the cob and New England fish chowder. It is going to be difficult to find room for dessert, but make sure you leave room for at least a few bites of the blueberry cake that Ruth Leavitt has always been known for.

As soon as you are finished eating, you can explore the island. I recommend walking along the shoreline, but you can also play a game of horseshoes or volleyball.

I can’t wait to help your family experience this traditional adventure over on Cabbage Island. If you have never been to a traditional clambake, then you must make sure your very first is the best one in the world! Let me add this incredible experience to your Maine road trip for your next family vacation. I guarantee no one in your family will have time to complain about being on an island because they will be too busy eating fabulous food and making new friends!
