The island of Maui is about 728 square miles, which may not seem too large. However, at approximately 48 miles long and 26 miles wide, there is plenty of space for you to go exploring. And since the views are spectacular, you will quickly realize the best way to see everything is to venture out on foot. Thankfully, there are numerous hiking trails for you to choose from. So, don’t feel like you need to make your own path as you head out on one of the best hikes in Maui.

The Best Hikes in Maui

Pipiwai Trail

You will find the trailhead for Pipiwai Trail over in Haleakala National Park. This is the most popular hiking trail within the park and possibly on the entire island of Maui. This is a moderately challenging hike. It begins at the Kiphahulu Visitor Center and ends at Waimoku Falls. Along the way, you will pass by the Seven Sacred Pools. The entire hike is approximately four miles.

Wailea Beach Path

There are going to be days when you want to get a hike in during your vacation in Maui, but you won’t want to leave the beach. This is where the Wailea Beach Path will come in handy! You can access this path from any of the hotels along the beach and wander down it for up to three miles. The views along this path are incredible. Plus, it is an excellent place to do a little people-watching.

Kapalua Coastal Trail

This is another easy coastal trail that you might want to add to your Maui Itinerary. You will find this hiking trail along the northern end of the island of Maui. While you will fall in love with the views, it will be the sightings of both the islands of Lanai and Molokai that will pique your interest the most.

Twin Falls Trail

The Twin Falls Trail begins right near mile marker 2 on the Road to Hana Highway. The main trail splits into two at one point, and it is best to go in both directions. To the left, you will find Twin Falls. And the right offers a trail that leads to more waterfalls. This hiking trail in Maui is easy, but good walking shoes are a must for the dirt and gravel path.

Hoapili Trail

The Hoapili Trail is five and a half miles long. The trailhead is located near the water in La Perouse. At the beginning of the hike, you will discover Hawaiian ruins and structures. You will know you have reached the end of the trail when you arrive at the bay. It is best to bring a bathing suit and snorkel set with you because the water is quite refreshing!

Sliding Sands Trail

The Sliding Sands Trail is quite challenging, so you will only want to attempt it with your kids if you are all experienced hikers. The elevation is high at more than ten thousand feet and there is very little shade along the way. This trail is between eight and eleven miles long, depending on the route you take. Your journey will begin at the Haleakala Visitor Center at the summit of Haleakala and goes down to the crater for the eight-mile hike. The extra three miles will occur if you tackle the path to the Halemau’u Trailhead at the end.

Waihe’e Ridge Trail

The Waihe’e Ridge Trail is moderately difficult at five miles. Access to this trail is from the Kahekili Highway. The trail can be slippery as you walk up toward the ridge. I do not recommend tackling this hike in Maui after it rains. But as long as you have a nice day, you will be rewarded with stunning views of the coastline and the West Maui mountains.

These are some of the best hikes in Maui, and many of them lead to magnificent Hawaiian waterfalls. As I am customizing your vacation in Maui, I can easily add any of these hikes, or others, to your itinerary.
