Out of all the Hawaiian Islands, Molokai is the one that people seem to ignore the most. I am not sure why so many people skip Molokai when planning their family vacation in Hawaii. After all, this island has beautiful sights, fascinating locals, and fewer touristy crowds. Today, I am going to share a few of the reasons you should add a family vacation in Molokai to your travel list.

Reasons to Vacation in Molokai

Fewer Crowds and Lots of Tranquility

Above, I mentioned you will find fewer crowds on the island of Molokai. That means you will also find lots of areas filled with tranquility. The quiet is perfect for enjoying time with your family as you all make memories you will cherish forever.

Not sure if Molokai is the perfect island for your next family vacation? Find out which Hawaiian Island is best for your family!

Authentic Hawaiian Culture

Yes, you will find Hawaiian culture on all the Hawaiian Islands. However, some of the other islands have created touristy cultures that travelers enjoy. If you want to participate in the most authentic Hawaiian cultures, I recommend taking a vacation in Molokai.

One of my favorite ways to experience this culture in Hawaii is by going to one of the cultural festivals held throughout the year.

Halawa Valley

One of the most impressive natural attractions on the Hawaiian Islands is Halawa Valley. This area is not only stunning but also full of history. It is thought that this area was where the very first settlement in Hawaii was located. Archaeological evidence shows that people were living in Halawa Valley in 650 AD.

Part of this valley is on private land. However, there are plenty of trails located on public lands. Many of those trails lead to temple ruins and rushing waterfalls.

Head to the Beach

Reasons to Vacation in Molokai - Kepuhi Bay in Molokai

Your family cannot vacation in Molokai and not spend time at the beach. Halawa Beach Park is one of the best beach areas to visit. There are two incredible beaches there. They are Kawili Beach and Kama’alaea Beach.

It is best to visit these beaches during the summer when the water is calm. During the winter, the water currents are quite strong, and swimming is considered dangerous.

Another excellent beach in Molokai is Papokahu Beach. This is one of the largest white sand beaches on the Hawaiian Islands. There are plenty of amenities at this beach, including restrooms and picnic tables.

Kamakou Preserve

Another magnificent destination to visit on Molokai is the Kamakou Preserve. Your family will see hundreds of unique Hawaiian plants throughout this preserve. Plenty of native animals and birds live in the Kamakou Preserve too.

One of the best ways to fully appreciate this area of the island is to head out on a hike.

Pala’au State Park

Your family will discover it is simple to spend time out in nature while on vacation in Molokai. One of my favorite places to go is Pala’au State Park. Make sure you take the time to visit the overlook to see views of Kalaupapa.

That area is where people who had leprosy were sent many years ago. Some of the younger generations from those families still live on the Kalaupapa Peninsula. You cannot currently visit this area like you were able to in the past. If that rule changes in the future, it is worth a few hours of your time to meet the families who live there.

Delicious Molokai Hot Bread

Okay, so the main reason why everyone should take the time to go on vacation in Molokai is the delicious hot bread. You can purchase Molokai hot bread at Kanemitsu Bakery. This hot bread contains yummy fillings. You can purchase it filled with everything from cream cheese to strawberries or blueberries.

You can purchase this hot bread on the other islands in Hawaii. However, it never seems to taste as good as it does when you eat it in Molokai!

These are the main reasons you need to take a family vacation in Molokai. There are many other reasons, though, and you will discover many of them once you arrive on the island. I can personalize your family vacation in Molokai so you do everything you want to while away from home.

Molokai is one of the Hawaiian Islands. The island is full of beauty, friendly locals, Hawaiian culture and traditions, and an ambiance that will never have you feeling rushed or stressed. While the island of Molokai has many things going for it, there is something missing. You may not be able to determine what is missing at first, but after spending a few days on this island, you will realize there are no tourist traps. That means you won’t get sucked in by a fake Hawaiian attraction or store and will instead enjoy an authentic experience during your vacation. And don’t worry; there are so many things to do in Molokai during your next family vacation that I guarantee you won’t be bored!

Best Things to Do in Molokai During Your Next Family Vacation

Visit as Many Waterfalls as Possible

The waterfalls in Molokai are simply stunning. It is best to visit them the day after a rainstorm because the water will rush over the edge with even more force. But if you happen to have gorgeous weather your entire trip, it’s okay! You will still think all the waterfalls on this island are incredible. You can easily visit as many of Molokai’s waterfalls as you wish. But to get your waterfall bucket list started, I recommend Papalaua Falls, Hipuapua Falls, and the waterfalls near the end of the hike in Halawa Valley.

Decorate a Coconut and Send It Back Home

Do you love to decorate? Or paint or design? Well, when you take a vacation in Molokai, you can spend part of a day decorating your own coconut! Simply head over to the US Post Office Hoolehua to create a fabulous coconut. Once your coconut is completed, you are welcome to “Post-a-Nut”. You can send it to your home or to friends and family as a one-in-a-kind souvenir.

Enjoy a Few Water Sports

The Hawaiian Islands may be known for surfing, but there are many other types of water sports you can do when you are on vacation in Molokai. I recommend renting a kayak or paddleboard, so you can enjoy beautiful views of the shoreline from a different vantage point. Of course, you can also learn how to snorkel and scuba dive when you are on vacation in Molokai. These two types of water sports are perfect for when you want to get up close to marine life, like fish, green turtles, dolphins, and sharks.

Take the Scenic Drive Along the Coastal Road

Over on the island of Maui, many travelers choose to conquer the Road to Hana. Well, on the island of Molokai, the scenic road is the Kamehameha V Highway. The scenic drive is twenty-eight miles long and will lead you directly to Halawa Valley. There are multiple stopping points along this coastal road. However, the ones you will want to make sure are on your list to stop at include:

  • Kalokoeli Fishpond
  • One Ali’I Beach Park
  • St. Joseph Church
  • Our Lady of Sorrows Church
  • Iliiliopae Heiau
  • Kumimi Beach

Go Shopping at the Saturday Farmers Market

You must wake up early if you want to purchase the best items from the Saturday Famers Market when you are on vacation in Molokai. The best fruits and veggies sell quickly, as do all the favorite souvenirs. This market opens at seven in the morning, and I recommend getting there a few minutes before that to park and get your bearings. Then don’t forget to grab a shaved ice before the market closes at noon.

Go Back in Time to the Town of Maunaloa

Maunaloa was an up-and-coming town back in the day, but in 2008, it turned into a ghost town. The locals didn’t want the area overdeveloped, so the owner of many of the buildings closed everything up and left. While people still live in Maunaloa, there is only a general store in the town. All the abandoned buildings are still standing, though, many of them with their signage intact. A visit here is an excellent way to show the kids what life was like more than a decade ago.

Go Hiking Along the Pepeopae Trail in the Kamakou Preserve

There are many hiking trails in Molokai, but one of the best is the Pepeopae Trail in the Kamakou Preserve. This rainforest is filled with lush vegetation, including more than two hundred different native plants. You will hike along a boardwalk as you pass through the rainforest and mountain bog. Your destination is the overlook of Pelekunu Valley, and you will be rewarded with magnificent views.

Watch the Sunset at Papohaku Beach Park

There are plenty of options when it comes to watching the sunset during vacations in Molokai. However, one of the best sunset-watching destinations is Papohaku Beach Park. After watching the sunset, you can stare off in the distance at the twinkling lights in Honolulu.

And if you want to visit a beach without a person during the day, this beach should be at the top of your list. The three miles of sand hardly ever have too many people on it, so you can enjoy the tranquility and get a good stretch of sand to relax on.

These are just some of the best things to do in Molokai during your next family vacation. I know that you won’t want to have all these items on your list of things to do in Molokai because they might not all interest your family. But I have so many other ideas that I can share with you as we discuss your family’s likes and dislikes.

Tourist attractions are not what brings families to the island of Molokai for vacations. Instead, the laidback lifestyle, as well as the soft sandy beaches on Molokai, are what draws people to this Hawaiian Island. However, don’t think your entire family vacation in Molokai must be spent at the beach. There are many other adventures waiting for you in this little piece of paradise. I can help you find the ones that are best for your next family vacation.

Best Beaches on Molokai

One Alii Beach Park

The sandy shoreline at One Alii Beach Park might be small, but that doesn’t mean this beach in Molokai isn’t worthy of a visit! You will find this beach in Kaunakakai, which is the largest town on the island of Molokai. Green open spaces surround the soft sand, so there is plenty of room to spread out and enjoy a sunny day. The water is not crystal clear at this beach, so you may or may not want to go in for a swim. If you decide not to, you can always do a little fishing instead. Fishing is one of the most popular activities at this beach destination.

Sandy Beach

Sandy Beach is one of the best beaches for swimming on the island of Molokai. Swimming and snorkeling are amazing at this beach, thanks to the reef. While a day at this beach is fantastic, your family’s favorite part will be the journey to reach this destination. The road that leads to this beach is full of curves. Plus, it is quite narrow. But the views are worth every challenging minute of the drive!

Papohaku Beach

On the west end of the island of Molokai, you will find Papohaku Beach. This beach on Molokai is three miles long. This is not the best beach for swimming due to the surf. But if your family has some experience in bodyboarding, you can catch a few waves during your visit. It is best not to walk around barefoot on this beach. There are pieces of wire and metal in the sand still from World War II. You will also discover thorns from the Kiawe trees in the sand. Those thorns are really sharp and hurt if stepped on.

Halawa Beach Park

This park is home to two of Molokai’s best beaches. Those beaches are Kama’alaea Beach and Kawili Beach. As long as the water is calm, these are fabulous beaches for swimming. However, when the surf is strong, dangerous rip currents occur. During the winter months, this is one of the best places to watch surfers out in the ocean.

These are the best beaches on Molokai. Only a couple of the beaches on Molokai have restrooms and drinking water. Therefore, your family must be prepared to take lots of water, or other liquids, with you when you decide to spend any time at most of the beaches in Molokai. Sunscreen is another must at the best beaches in Molokai because the sun can be very strong, especially during the summer months.

Now that you know which beaches are the best on Molokai, are you ready to plan your next family vacation?

If you said yes, I would like to invite you to schedule a planning session with me by clicking here. When you click this link, you are taken directly to my digital calendar to schedule a time that is convenient for you.
