Are you always searching for an excuse to stay in your pj’s a little longer?? I am always ready to spend a few extra hours in my pajamas! And now we have an excuse with National Family PJ Day. I love having time to spend with my kids, as we all hang out in our pj’s talking about whatever I can get them to open up about.  Did you know National Family PJ Day was created by Soma back in 2019? Let’s celebrate this newer family national holiday with a little history of pajamas. And how you can truly embrace National PJ Day with your family!

National Family PJ Day: Let’s Celebrate!

The History of Pajamas

National Family PJ Day: Let's Celebrate! - Girls in Matching PJs

It is not completely known when pajamas became a prominent fixture in the world. Some people think it was back around 1870 when British colonials started wearing them to bed instead of the traditional nightshirt.

Pajamas became even more fashionable in the early 1900s. Ribbons and lace were added to pajamas at this time. Sophisticated pajamas were created in the 1920s. Pajamas have evolved even more since that time.

I mean, you know all the options we have now for pajamas. Compare that to the old nightshirt, and then let me know why celebrating National Family PJ Day is much more comfortable nowadays!

What to Do When Celebrating National Family PJ Day

National Family PJ Day: Let's Celebrate! - Great Migration in Masai-Mara

There are so many things you can do with your family as you all rock your jammies. You can begin the day by preparing breakfast and eating together. Then read a book out loud or play a board game or two.

Add in watching movies, binge-watching Netflix, or enjoying a picnic lunch, and you have memories in the making.

One of my favorite things to do on our pajama days is plan exciting family vacations. I have taken multiple family vacations over the years. And I’m telling you, each one is better than the last! The memories I make with my family during these vacations are amazing. I truly cherish all these memories, and I look forward to the ones we will make together in the future.

I have traveled to Kenya, Norway, Alaska, and so many other destinations for our family vacations.

Consider Discussing These Family Vacation Options on National Family PJ Day

You may be wondering where you can go for yours. Well, the sky is the limit!

As a travel advisor, I can make all your family vacation dreams come true. Even if you are planning on heading out on vacation with teens who prefer eye rolls over saying anything nice. All you need to do is share your dreams with me, and before you know it, you will be making memories with your family.

Consider these vacation destinations for your next family vacation:

Are you intrigued by all the possibilities waiting for you during your next family vacation? This Christmas, when your entire family is in matching pajamas, talk about your next family vacation adventure. Decide where you all want to go or what you all want to do. As your travel advisor, I can tackle the hard work after that and turn those dreams into memories.

Check out my tips for traveling with teens. Trust me, it’s easier than you think!

You don’t even need to wait that long. On National Family PJ Day, or Thanksgiving, have this conversation. This will ensure you don’t need to wait as long to enjoy the memories you will all make together.

Older kids scattered all around the country? Check out my tips for making family vacations possible!

Chocolate is a sweet treat many of us simply cannot resist. Therefore, I know you are more than ready to help me celebrate National Chocolate Day! If you are like me, you have your favorite types of chocolate candies and desserts. But where should you take a family vacation when you want to try different types of chocolate? Numerous destinations are known for their local chocolate. Today, I am going to share more about the best destinations to taste chocolate. As well as a little history about chocolate. I recommend grabbing a piece or two of chocolate to eat before you finish reading.

Let’s Celebrate National Chocolate Day

The History of Chocolate

Let's Celebrate National Chocolate Day - Chocolate Drinks

Chocolate has been consumed since the times of Mesoamerica. However, scientists are still trying to prove that point. They are getting close, though.

Anthropologists from the University of Pennsylvania found cacao residue on pottery excavated in Honduras in 2007. The pottery dates back to 1400 BCE. Cacao fruit was fermented to make alcoholic beverages.

Chocolate back then was quite bitter. Sweetened chocolate was consumed after the discovery of America.

Hernando Cortes was one of the first explorers to consume chocolate drinks. He thought it was too bitter. However, in Spain, people began to mix it with cane sugar or honey to make it sweeter.

Chocolate drinks were a fashionable drink during the 17th century. A Dutch chemist created powdered chocolate in 1828.

Joseph Fry invented the chocolate bar in 1847. That was when he realized he could create a chocolate bar by mixing melted cacao butter with Dutch cocoa.

Cadbury began making chocolate candies in 1868. The least flavorful cacao bean varieties are used for today’s chocolate treats. This is to try to keep the chocolate treats more affordable.

Where to Take a Family Vacation to Indulge in Chocolate

You can easily find chocolate no matter where you go for your family vacation. However, if you want to indulge in some of the best chocolate in celebration of National Chocolate Day, I recommend you consider these destinations.

Switzerland

Switzerland has long been known for its delicious chocolate. One of the oldest chocolate factories in Switzerland, and the world, is Maison Cailler. From the outside, this factory looks like a manor house. But inside is where all the magic occurs.

Other must-visit chocolate factories and stores in Switzerland include Sprungli, Teuscher, and Lindt. I recommend adding them all to your itinerary for celebrating National Chocolate Day with your family.

Brussels, Belgium: A Popular National Chocolate Day Destination

Let's Celebrate National Chocolate Day - Godiva Chocolate Store in Belgium

Brussels has earned the nickname Chocolate Capital of the World. There are more chocolate shops per square foot in this city than anywhere else in the world. Needless to say, you will always find chocolate when you need it in Brussels!

Godiva and Leonidas are both located in Brussels. A visit to the Musee du Cacao et du Chocolate is a must for chocolate lovers too.

Let me carefully plan your National Chocolate Day itinerary for your family vacation in Brussels. This will ensure you won’t miss any of the delicious chocolate during your visit.

Want to indulge in chocolate closer to home? Check out where to find the best chocolate in Baltimore!

Paris, France

Gourmet foods are everywhere in the City of Love. While many families grab croissants and baguettes during their vacation in Paris, you may want to focus on the chocolate. There are more than three hundred chocolate shops in this city.

Dark chocolate is Paris’ specialty. Keep this in mind as you sign up for one of the many chocolate walking tours on National Chocolate Day.

The Chocolate Valley in Tuscany, Italy

You may want to take a family vacation in Italy to try all the fine wines. I recommend checking out the chocolate when you are there too!

The Chocolate Valley is between Pisa, Florence, and Montecatini. There are multiple gourmet shops and factories that sell lots of chocolate.

Vestri is one of the best places to try chocolate in this area. The wait to get in is always long but worth every second.

Don’t forget about National Chocolate Cupcake Day!

Cologne, Germany

Learning about chocolate is simple at the Imhoff Stollwerck Museum. Hans Imhoff opened this museum. Inside the museum, you can learn all about the history of chocolate. The most popular exhibit is the massive chocolate fountain.

Make sure you take the time to stop at the Stollwerck Chocolate Company to buy chocolate. This company was the second largest supplier of chocolate sent to the US. You will need to plan carefully if you want visit here for National Chocolate Day.

St. Lucia: A Warm National Chocolate Day Destination

No one really thinks all their chocolate dreams can come true down in the Caribbean. However, when you take a family vacation in St. Lucia, you can experience an exotic chocolate holiday.

A few of the resorts have their own cocoa plantations. Those resorts focus on numerous chocolate events your entire family will enjoy. I recommend attending one of those events around National Chocolate Day.

These are some of the best places to take a family vacation when you want to experience all things chocolate. If none of these destinations interest you, I can share a few others with you during our planning session.

If you said yes, I would like to invite you to schedule a planning session with me by clicking here. When you click on this link, you will be taken directly to my digital calendar to schedule a time that is convenient for you.

Did you know that National Pie Day is celebrated on January 23rd every year? This delicious day definitely deserves a little love. And maybe a road trip or family vacation to celebrate some of the best pies in different US destinations. If you have been craving a slice of pie (and who hasn’t!), it may be time to consider taking a trip to one of the best US destinations to visit to celebrate National Pie Day. There are tons of options. And the best part is you can choose a destination that is either close to home or as far away as you wish to travel with your family.

Best US Destinations to Visit to Celebrate National Pie Day

Prattville, Alabama

You may not have had any desire to visit Prattville, Alabama in the past, but if you love pecan pie, it is a must! Down at Uncle Mick’s Cajun Market & Café, you can grab a slice or two of the best pecan pie in the south. When your family is not scarfing down pie for National Pie Day, you will discover plenty of exciting activities to do together in Prattville. I recommend beginning by exploring Wilderness Park. From there, you can all check out the Pratt Cotton Gin Mill, The Prattaugan Museum, and finally, Cooter’s Pond Park.

Bantam, Connecticut

Connecticut isn’t a very large state, so it is possible to eat a little pie in Bantam. You can then venture off to areas like Mystic and Hartford. But a stop in Bantam is a must on National Pie Day. This area of the state is where you will be able to pick up a pumpkin custard tart at Bantam Bread. If you choose to spend more time in Bantam after eating your pie, you have a couple family-friendly options. Your family will love the Space Age Museum and Topsmead State Forest.

Lewes, Delaware

Delaware is another small state that is perfect for road trips and family vacations. If you happen to be in the area for National Pie Day, you must make a stop in Lewes. While the entire state of Delaware is known for its peach pies, no one makes them better than Old World Breads. Unfortunately, this bakery bakes according to the season. So, at this time of the year, you may find yourself ordering a pecan pie or another winter option. No worries, you can always choose to take a family vacation in Lewes during the summer when the peaches are ripe for the picking! And when you are not eating pie, your family will love walking the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk or exploring the Zwaanendael Museum.

Key West, Florida

Everyone knows that the best key lime pie can be found down in Key West, Florida. If you are craving some of this creamy pie, you must head over to Kermit’s Key West Key Lime Shoppe. And if a family vacation in Key West is not an option for National Pie Day, you can always order a key lime pie from them. They actually ship it to your home. But if you can get down to Key West, make sure the Ernest Hemingway House, Mallory Square, and the Southernmost Point Buoy are on your list of things to do. The kids will love snuggling with Hemingway’s cats. You will love the action within Mallory Square. And everyone will love taking selfies at the buoy!

Island of Oahu, Hawaii

Over on the island of Oahu, you cannot choose just one favorite pie for National Pie Day! With options that include passionfruit pear, pineapple, lilikoi, and guava, your family must simply try them all. Oh, and don’t forget the coconut pies. The ones at the Hawaiian Pie Co. melt in your mouth! I highly recommend taking a family vacation in Hawaii, not only for the pies but the ambiance and thrilling family adventures. If you can keep everyone away from the pie for a few hours, you can all wander through the Dole Pineapple Garden Maze or hike to the summit of Diamond Head. Submarine tours, snorkeling adventures, and of course, luaus will really add a little extra to your family vacation.

Chicago, Illinois

Does your family love French fries? What about chocolate? What would happen if you were to offer your family a chocolate French fry pie? Such a pie exists at Sugargoat Sweets in Chicago, Illinois! But don’t worry if combining chocolate and French fries doesn’t appeal to your family. The owner has you covered with other options like cheesecake pie, pumpkin crunch pie, and choco-lot pie. When you are not indulging in pie, you can walk off a few calories at the Navy Pier or visit the marine life at Shedd Aquarium. Going to the Skydeck of the Willis Tower is another option, but maybe do that before you eat your pie!

Natchitoches, Louisiana

Most families choose to visit New Orleans during a vacation in Louisiana. However, I recommend venturing over to the charming town of Natchitoches when you want a little pie for National Pie Day! A stop at Lasyone’s is a must, but not for sweet, dessert-like pie. This restaurant serves savory meat pies instead. Imagine biting into a pie made with pork and beef, as well as onions, peppers, and Southern seasonings. Once your family has eaten their fill of meat pies, you can continue on your way to New Orleans. But if you choose to stay in the area for a little while longer, make sure the Kaffie-Frederick General Mercantile Store is on your list of places to stop. It is the oldest general mercantile in the state. You never know what you may stumble upon during your visit.

These are some of the best US destinations to visit to celebrate National Pie Day. Do you know of any other destinations families should visit for some tasty pie? I would love to hear about them, so I can share them with other travelers. I would also love to plan a family vacation for you, so you can taste some of these fabulous pies.

So, are you ready to plan a family vacation to visit some of the best US destinations to celebrate National Pie Day?

If you said yes, I would like to invite you to schedule a planning session with me by clicking here. This will take you directly to my digital calendar, where you can schedule a time most convenient for you.

Rhode Island happens to be the smallest state in the US. However, that doesn’t mean this state isn’t packed with things to do and incredible sights! You can easily spend a week in Rhode Island for a family vacation. Or visit on a day trip while on a family vacation in Massachusetts or Connecticut. Since National Rhode Island Day is here, I thought I should share a few fun facts about this fabulous state.

Celebrate National Rhode Island Day with These Fun Facts

  1. Rhode Island is only 1,214 square miles in size. That makes it the smallest of all 50 states. However, this state isn’t the least populated of all the states. There are 8 other states that have fewer people than Rhode Island.
  2. The official nickname of Rhode Island is The Ocean State. Its official name though is State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.
  3. The official drink of Rhode Island is coffee milk. To make this drink, you simply add coffee syrup to a glass of milk.
  4. The first US Open Golf Tournament was held in Newport on October 4, 1895.
  5. Back in 1904, a judge in Newport placed a person in jail for speeding. The sentence was 5 days. It was the first person to do jail time for speeding, despite the fact the driver had only been going 15 miles per hour.
  6. On September 12, 1953, John F Kennedy married Jackie Bouvier at St. Mary’s Church in Newport. This church is now on the National Register of Historic Places.
  7. One of the oldest institutions of higher education in the US is Brown University. This university is located in Providence.
  8. There are currently more pizzerias per person in Rhode Island than there are in any other state. With approximately 35 pizzerias per 100,000 people, you will never have difficulty finding a slice while on a family vacation in Rhode Island.
  9. The state of Rhode Island has an island of the same name within the state. The island is also called Aquidneck Island. Maybe to avoid confusion?? The island is 44 square miles in size. There are two towns and one city on the island.
  10. The state pet is the Big Blue Bug. You can find the Big Blue Bug on the side of the highway in Providence. The bug’s name is Nibbles Woodaway. He is a 58-foot-long termite who weighs 2 tons. If you happen to take a family vacation there during the holidays, you will see Nibbles all decked out in holiday cheer.
  11. There is a coffee shop, mainly Dunkin Donuts, on almost every street corner.
  12. Hasbro Toys Headquarters can be found in Pawtucket.
  13. Rhode Island never approved the 18th Amendment, which was Prohibition.
  14. It is illegal to throw pickle juice at a trolley in Rhode Island.
  15. A law on the books in Rhode Island makes it illegal for companies to make some employees work on Sundays. The fine is only $10, and it only applies to unnecessary work that was completed.
  16. It is actually illegal to bite off another person’s leg in Rhode Island.
  17. It is illegal to smoke a pipe after sunset in Newport, Rhode Island.

These are some of the fun facts I discovered about this state for National Rhode Island Day. One of my favorite ways to see Rhode Island during a family vacation is by taking a cruise to Canada. This may seem strange, but a couple of the cruise lines stop right in Newport, Rhode Island. There are a few different excursions you can do while in Newport. A popular excursion is taking a tour of all the mansions located within the Newport area. Two of the most popular mansions are the Breakers and the Marble House. They were both owned by the Vanderbilts.

Giant pandas are black and white creatures that look all soft and cuddly. While they truly are that way, there is no way you would want to approach one of them in the wild. You must remember they are wild animals and will react accordingly. Pandas are considered a vulnerable species. There are only approximately 1,864 of them living in the wild. Most of those pandas live in the mountainous regions of China. A trip to China can have you spending time with pandas for National Panda Day. But if you want to visit pandas a little closer to home, you have other options.

The National Zoo in Washington DC

A quick online visit to The National Zoo’s website can have you watching pandas play, sleep, or eat at any time of the day. Simply click on the Giant Panda Cam. Then toggle between the two cameras to see where the pandas are hanging out.

Giant pandas arrived at The National Zoo back in 1972. The very first pandas were Hsing-Hsing and Ling-Ling. They had five panda cubs, although none of them survived. The next two pandas were loaned to The National Zoo back in 2000. Mei Xiang and Tian Tian arrived and over the years, they had four surviving cubs. Three of those cubs have been transported back to China, per the agreement between the country and the zoo. The fourth cub, who was born in 2020, is still at The National Zoo with his parents.

Zoo Atlanta in Atlanta, Georgia

A couple of the six hundred giant pandas living at zoos around the world can be found at Zoo Atlanta. This zoo also has a panda camera. So, you can keep track of your favorite animal whenever you have a little downtime. Two of the zoo’s popular pandas arrived back in 1999. Those pandas, Lun Lun and Yang Yang have had seven cubs together. Many of them have been returned to China.

One of the best things about visiting the pandas at Zoo Atlanta is you can actually spend time with them during an encounter. There will be a barrier between you and the panda, but you will be able to feed them their favorite snack.

Memphis Zoo in Memphis, Tennessee

The panda exhibit at the Memphis Zoo is three acres. It is where Ya Ya and Le Le have lived since 2003. Information about the pandas can be found at the pagoda, while a film is shown at the Welcoming Guest Hall.

Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Center in Chengdu, China

If you don’t mind traveling to China, the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Center is the best place to visit pandas for National Panda Day. Approximately fifty giant pandas live at this breeding center. The goal of the center is to let visitors see how pandas live in the wild, while they train the pandas to adapt to being out in the wild before being released. It is best to plan on spending at least half a day at this breeding and research base. While you will definitely see the pandas during your visit, you may be surprised to learn that you might have the opportunity to hold one as well.

These are all wonderful places to visit pandas for National Panda Day. I recommend arriving at the panda exhibit at each destination early in the day, because crowds form rather quickly. And when you do get to the exhibit, do not be disappointed if the pandas are either eating or sleeping. They seem to spend approximately ten hours a day doing each of those activities. Therefore, there isn’t a lot of time to climb trees and play.

So, are you ready to have me create a personalized family vacation itinerary for your trip to one of these destinations or another one?

If you said yes, I would like to invite you to click here to schedule a personalized family vacation planning session. When you click on this link, you will be taken directly to my digital calendar to schedule a time that is convenient for you.
