Sunday River in Maine

Best Ski Resorts in New England - Family Skiing

If you have been yearning to check out a ski resort in Maine, I recommend Sunday River. This is one of the amazing ski resorts in New England. It is perfect when you are on vacation with young kids, teens, or adult children and grandkids.

There are eight different peaks at Sunday River. Add in the altitude of 2,340 feet and you will feel as if you are soaring from the sky! You can choose from 135 trails, of which 30% of them are for beginners.

There is even a ski school at this ski resort in Maine. That means your entire family can learn how to ski together if you haven’t skied before! And if you are all experts, you must try out Goat Path and Tourist Trap during your stay.

When you’re not on the slopes, you will still have plenty of things to do with your family at Sunday River. Out on the deck, you can grab a craft brew. There is a hot tub at the Jordan Hotel and too many restaurants and cafés to count. Add in the small town of Bethel nearby and you will have a magical family vacation to remember forever.

Killington in Vermont – One of the Best Ski Resorts in New England

Killington is a ski resort in Vermont that has earned the nickname “The Beast of the East”. No worries, there are plenty of ski runs for inexperienced skiers at this ski resort in Vermont! There are 212 trails, which are the most trails in one ski resort on the East Coast.

The best area for beginners at Killington is the Snowshed. More advanced skiers will want to test out the Juggernaut and the Anarchy double black diamond runs.

The best part about Killington though is it offers some of the best cuisine. The Jerk Jamaican Mountain Grill and Long Trail Pub are both excellent dining options. However, you will never go wrong with the steaks and nightlife at the Wobbly Barn. This restaurant has been open since 1968. It has earned top honors for being one of the best après ski-bars in the entire country.

Plan your family vacation in Vermont with my travel guide.

Have you ever wanted to take your family to hang out with sledding dogs and take a dog sledding adventure? You probably haven’t done this type of family adventure yet, because you think you need to travel all the way to Alaska to do it. But you can actually take a family vacation in New England and go dog sledding! It is a memorable adventure that will bring your family together as you experience something wonderful.

Dog Sledding in New England

There are quite a few places to go dog sledding in New England. Therefore, you shouldn’t feel trapped in visiting a destination that doesn’t interest you at all. I can easily help you determine which area will be the best for your family.

To get you started in seeing the possibilities, here are a few dog sledding options in New England:

Muddy Paw Sled Dog Kennel in Jefferson, NH

Dog sledding season in New England runs from the middle of December through the end of March. Muddy Paw Sled Dog Kennel offers tours on Tuesdays through Sundays most weeks. They offer four different tours. Those tours include a one-and-a-half-hour tour, a three-hour tour, a mini mush tour, and a musher for a minute tour. Two of the tours require guests to be at least two years old to participate. The three-hour tour has an age of five years old as a requirement. The Musher for a Minute tour requires guests to be at least twelve years old.

There are around eighty sled dogs at this facility, so you will have plenty of cuddling and play time during your visit.

Eden Dog Sledding in Eden Mills, VT

This destination offers tours from November through April. They can stay open a little longer because they are on a mountain snow belt. Your visit will include hands-on opportunities with the Alaskan huskies. During your tour, you will be taken along the trail system. This system goes through 140 acres of land, as well as the dogsledding village. At the end of your tour, you will have plenty of time to spend with the dogs and enjoy a few refreshments.

Dog Sledding - Siberian Husky Puppies

Maine Dogsledding Adventures in Millinocket, ME

You can choose between half-day and full-day tours when you choose to visit Maine Dogsledding Adventures. Your tour will begin with you meeting the huskies and having your picture taken with them. Everyone will have a turn driving the sled as you travel between ten and twelve miles into the forest. While you may be so focused on the dogs, you must also take the time to appreciate the views of Mt. Katahdin in the distance.

Hilltown Sleddogs in West Chesterfield, MA

This dog sledding destination is actually open year-round. Therefore, you can even plan a fun dogsledding adventure for the summer months if you are not a fan of the cold and the snow. Your entire family can learn how to take the reins of the dog sled as you take a ride through the forest and open fields. While those are a lot of fun, I actually recommend attending their Sled Dog Camp for the best experience. You will have your own dog to take care of during your weeklong camp, which will only enhance your experience with this adventure.

These are the best places to go dog sledding in New England. You will love the time you get to spend with your family on this type of adventure! You won’t regret the memories you make with your family and the sled dogs during this vacation in New England.

Are you a fan of the winter months and want to have fun with your family with a little vacation? Yet do you want to find something that doesn’t have anything to do with skiing? I have the solution for you if you want to take a family vacation in New England. There are plenty of winter activities other than skiing that you can enjoy. And none of them have anything to do with sitting inside your hotel room or a ski lodge for hours on end!

Check Out These Winter Activities other than Skiing when Vacationing in New England During the Winter

Go Hiking

Yes, you really can go hiking in the winter. Although it can be slightly challenging in New England. But with a few extra precautions, you will find yourself having one family adventure after another! The White Mountains in New Hampshire is an excellent choice for hiking in the winter. However, you will also find plenty of hiking trails in Vermont, Maine, and Massachusetts.

Check Out Frozen Waterfalls

Many waterfalls do not keep flowing over the winter due to the extremely cold temperatures and limited water supply. Therefore, it is completely possible to check out frozen waterfalls when you are on vacation in New England at that time of the year. A couple of the best waterfalls to see when frozen include:

  • Screw Auger Falls near Bethel, Maine
  • Arethusa Falls within the White Mountains in New Hampshire
  • Race Brook Falls in Sheffield, Massachusetts

Do a Little Ice Fishing

If you love fishing when the weather is nice, you will love going out to do a little ice fishing. Simply find a lake where ice fishing is allowed, cut a hole in the ice, and drop a line in. Hopefully, you will be lucky and catch a lot of fish for your dinner!

Go Snowshoeing

Most non-skiers who love the snow are fans of snowshoeing. This winter activity gets you out in the middle of nature for the day. Plus, snowshoeing is an excellent way to see the gorgeous views of the area you are visiting for your family vacation in New England.

Take a Dogsledding Ride

You do not need to travel to Alaska to take a dogsledding ride. This wintertime adventure can be done in all the New England states. This type of winter activity will have you meeting the sled dogs, learning how to drive your own team, and participating in a dogsledding ride.

Visit a Christmas Market

Early winter family vacations in New England can include visits to the Christmas Markets. There are plenty to choose from in this part of the country. The best part is you can check multiple items off your list when you take the time to shop at one of the Christmas Markets in New England.

A few favorites include:

  • Freeport Sparkle Weekend in Freeport, ME
  • Main Street at Christmas in Stockbridge, MA
  • Kennebunkport Christmas Prelude in Kennebunkport, ME
  • Strawberry Banke Candlelight Stroll in Portsmouth, NH
  • Winter Wassail Weekend in Woodstock, VT
  • Christmas in the City in Boston, MA

These are six winter activities that you can choose to do other than skiing when you are on a family vacation in New England. Each one will have you exploring the great outdoors in the snow and the cold. Yet, you won’t be on the slopes doing an activity you do not love!
