Are you in the process of planning a winter family vacation? Do you want to visit a destination that offers warmer weather than you have back home? Well, the winter weather in the southeastern states is much more agreeable than it is in many other parts of the country. There really isn’t any snow and if there is, you won’t see more than a dusting. The temperatures are more moderate, and you won’t freeze your butt off when you take your vacation there. There are quite a few states within this southeastern region. So, I recommend sitting down as a family to discuss where you will go. Today, I am sharing some of the amazing things to do in the southeast for your winter family vacation. I guarantee you will find a couple things that must be on your family’s vacation itinerary.

Amazing Things to Do in the Southeast for Your Winter Family Vacation

Explore the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge in the Outer Banks

Amazing Things to Do in the Southeast for Your Winter Family Vacation - Egret at Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge in the Outer Banks

You will find the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge in Rodanthe. There are more than four hundred different types of birds there. During the winter months, you will see many different duck species, as well as songbirds.

This is one of the best things to do in the southeast if your family loves birdwatching and nature.

Check out these other incredible destinations on the southeast coast!

See the Wild Horses in the Outer Banks – The Most Amazing Thing to Do in the Southeast

Wild horses have been roaming the Outer Banks for approximately five hundred years now. You can see these horses on your own while on vacation in the Outer Banks.

However, I recommend taking one of the many wild horse tours in the Outer Banks. The tours are normally two hours long. During the wild horse tours in the Outer Banks, your guide will take you directly to where the horses are hanging out that day. They will also share lots of information about the horses and the areas they roam the most.

While you can’t ride the wild horses in the Outer Banks, you will never forget the memories you make during your family vacation there. Plus, it is one of the amazing things to do in the southeast at any time of the year!

Need to take your family vacation during the fall? Check out what the Outer Banks has to offer during that season!

Attend the Charleston Wine and Food Festival in Charleston, SC

If you love food and wine, then you may want to plan a late winter vacation in Charleston, SC. The end of February and the beginning of March brings the Charleston Wine and Food Festival.

This annual event in the southeast will have you listening to storytellers, tasting foods, and sipping on wine. This event lasts for five days. While many areas of the event are spread out throughout the city, you will find the main area over in Marion Square.

If your children are older, or you are an empty nester, this may be the perfect thing to do in the southeast during your winter vacation.

Use my travel guide to start planning your family vacation in Charleston!

Wander Along Museum Mile in Charleston, SC

Amazing Things to Do in the Southeast for Your Winter Family Vacation - Charleston City Market

Museum Mile in Charleston, SC is a mile-long section of road on Meeting Street. You will find six museums there.

It is also the location of five historic homes, four scenic parks, City Hall, and the Charleston City Market. You can easily see all these things in just one day of your Charleston, SC vacation.

Since this road is only a mile long, you get to see a lot without walking too far. Plus, as one of the amazing things to do in the Southeast, it will be nice to check this area off your must-see list.

Check out these other historic sites within the southeast for your next family vacation.

Attend Christmas on the River and the Lighted Christmas Parade in Savannah, GA

Christmas on the River and the Lighted Christmas Parade are two holiday traditions in Savannah, GA. Your southeastern vacation will need to be in the beginning of December if you want to attend these festivities.

During your visit, you will have the chance to purchase gifts of all kinds from the vendors lined up all along the river. Live music plays in the background. And you will never lack a place to eat when you are hungry.

Visit the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force – A Unique Thing to Do in the Southeast

Savannah is known for being warm during the winter months. But that doesn’t mean there won’t be a chill in the air on occasion.

If that happens during your family vacation in Savannah, you must head over to the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force. Inside, you will find numerous exhibits filled with memorabilia and artifacts. Each piece shares the history of the Air Force and how they helped win World War II.

Go Antiquing in Louisville, KY

Sometimes, you just need to wander around looking at old things when you are on vacation in Louisville, KY. Your family might not be thrilled with this option at first. However, once they discover their first “find”, they will be ready to up the ante a little!

There are dozens of thrift stores and antique stores in Louisville. A couple that come highly recommended include The Crazy Daisy, 2023 Antiques, and the Louisville Antique Market.

These are some of the amazing things to do in the southeast this winter for your family vacation. Share these activities with your family and get some other ideas of what they would be interested in for your family trip. I can then take that information and plan a fabulous southeast vacation your entire family will love!

Yes, Halloween has just passed. But it is never too early to plan for next year’s spooky season. Especially when it comes to planning a haunted family vacation in Savannah. Plus, I don’t know about you, but the fall brings out the ghost-seeker in me. It seems to be the perfect time of the year to listen to ghost stories, wander through haunted houses, and even attempt to scare up a ghost or two! Does experiencing the ghosts in Savannah firsthand sound interesting? If you said yes, you must check out these Savannah GA haunted attractions. Of course, you can visit Savannah to conjure up a few ghosts at any time of the year. The ghosts will be waiting for you!

Savannah GA Haunted Attractions to See During Your Family Vacation

The Andrew Low House

Savannah GA Haunted Attractions to See During Your Family Vacation - Andrew Low House and Museum in Savannah GA

The Andrew Low House is located at 329 Abercorn Street. This house is now a museum. The people in charge do not like to discuss the ghostly happenings inside. But you can wander around and feel the history and spirits that are still alive.

Mercer Williams House – One of the Most Known Savannah GA Haunted Attraction

The Mercer Williams House was featured in a very popular book. The book is Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt. If you haven’t taken the time to read it, you really must check it out!

This is one of the most stopped by haunted attractions in Savannah. You will find  this spooky house on Monterey Square. There have been three deaths in this home, including one of an eleven-year-old boy.

It may be exactly what you need to add to your itinerary to scare your teens while on vacation!

Plan your family vacation in Savannah with my travel guide!

The Davenport House

The Davenport House is in Columbia Square. Numerous ghosts live inside the Davenport House in Savannah.

In addition to the human ghosts, there is a cat ghost at this home. Sometimes this cat can be seen racing from one room to another. Other times it is sitting on the windowsill.

The Davenport House is currently a museum. So, you can go in and explore when it is open.

Here are a few other amazing things to do during a family vacation in Savannah.

The Olde Pink House – Best Savannah GA Haunted Attraction for Dining

You can actually dine with the ghosts at the Olde Pink House in Savannah. The Olde Pink House is one of the most haunted buildings in Savannah.

One of the old owners of this home killed himself there. His ghost continues to roam the house. He is only one of the ghosts in this home though. So, I recommend being prepared to experience ghosts during your family vacation visit.

Lafayette Square

Lafayette Square is the most haunted square in Savannah. There are also numerous haunted houses and buildings around this square. Lafayette Square is where many of the ghosts congregate.

Here are a few southeastern haunted towns to consider visiting during a future family vacation.

The Marshall House Hotel

Savannah GA Haunted Attractions to See During Your Family Vacation - The Marshall House Hotel In Savannah GA

The Marshall House Hotel was once a Civil War Hospital. It also served as a hospital during the yellow fever epidemics of the 19th century.

You can now stay in this hotel. Which means you will have ample opportunities to run into the ghosts that roam the hallways.

While on a vacation with kids, you can walk through the hallways, reading the stories posted on the walls.

The Willink House

The Willink House is located at 426 East St. Julian Street. However, it was not always located there. The Willink House was on the corner of Perry and Price Streets before moving to this location.

To this day, neighbors continue to hear the front door slamming shut. Things are constantly moving inside the house. But not by people.

Henry F. Willink is one of those ghosts and many of the other are the school children that went to school inside the home.

Chech out these other haunted houses in the US.

432 Abercorn Street

The haunted attractions in Savannah are not without controversy. Many people have gone wild with the ghostly stories of 432 Abercorn Street. So much so that many of them are not true at all.

This home was constructed on top of a slave burial site. No one really knows who is roaming this building. And no one ever will.

No one is allowed to go inside this tightly closed up home.

Visit a few of the most haunted towns in America during a family vacation. Each town is guaranteed to scare everyone in your family!

You can check out all these haunted attractions, plus many others during your family vacation in Savannah, GA. While you can visit them all on your own, I recommend taking one of the many ghostly tours in Savannah. They are the best way to learn about ghosts, hauntings, and other spooky happenings in Savannah.

So, are you ready to plan a family vacation in Savannah and check out these haunted attractions?

Are you looking for a way to spend quality time with your kids? Do you want to avoid a vacation where your kids spend the entire time on their phones and social media? I can easily plan a personalized family vacation your kids will love! Imagine making memories with your kids, as you explore Savannah, Georgia. There are so many family-friendly things to do in Savannah. Your kids may not want to do everything on the list of the best things to do in Savannah that I will be sharing with you today. However, with so many options, your kids will agree quite a few of them should be on your personalized itinerary. And you get to make so many memories together during this time away from home.

Check out my Savannah travel guide to learn more about vacationing in this wonderful city!

Plan an Amazing Family Vacation with These Best Things to Do in Savannah

Take a Walk through Forsyth Park

Forsyth Park is a beautiful park in the heart of Savannah. There are thirty acres of space filled with trees, flowers, and a gorgeous fountain. I have found the best time to visit this park is in the early morning hours. There aren’t as many people. It’s quiet. And I can easily drink my cup of coffee while soaking in the silence.

Now, of course, my kids are all grown up. So, they are usually walking in silence next to me drinking their own coffee. Or latte. Or whatever concoction they have recently discovered.

Depending on the age of your kids, you may experience the same thing. Or you may find that your younger kids are more than ready to run off some energy. Thankfully, this is the perfect place to let that happen!

There is a farmer’s market here on Saturdays. And open-air concerts are held in Forsyth Park throughout the year. We can always check the schedule of planned events when I am personalizing your itinerary if you are interested in attending one.

Take an Old Savannah Trolley Tour

Plan an Amazing Family Vacation with These Best Things to Do in Savannah - Old Savannah Trolley

The Old Savannah Trolley is a hop on hop off trolley that takes you to the most popular sights in the city. This is an excellent option if you want to find where everything is located. Or if you want to see many attractions in a short amount of time.

A few of the places you will see at the fifteen different stops include the Sorrel Weed House, Juliette Gordon Low Home, Pirates House, and the Mansion of Forsyth Park. You will also see many of the squares in the city.

Go Shopping at the City Market

The City Market is a wonderful open-air market in Savannah. Shopping here is one of the best things to do in Savannah. The four blocks of the market are full of shops, restaurants, and art galleries. You will even find a bar or two where you can grab a wine slushie or a beer to go.

Visit the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist

This cathedral was originally constructed back in 1876. However, a massive fire destroyed that building in 1898. It only took two years to completely rebuild the cathedral and it has been carefully preserved ever since.

This is one of the top historic sites to visit in Savannah and the United States. I recommend taking a self-guided tour. This will allow you to fully admire the stained glass, as well as the towering spires.

Wander Along River Street

River Street is a beautiful cobblestone street that follows the waterfront. The warehouses on this street have been transformed into different shops and restaurants. The riverwalk is considered one of the most beautiful destinations in Savannah.

I highly recommend going into the candy stores. These candy shops are known for their chocolate pralines. Don’t worry, they sell all types of candy. So, be careful if you let your kids go in there with you. It might add new meaning to kids in a candy shop!

If you are looking to see this area from a different perspective, take a dinner cruise on the river. Dinner cruises, or sunset cruises, on the Georgia Queen are an excellent way to see the scenery and have a little downtime.

Wander Around Bonaventure Cemetery

Savannah is one of the historic cities that is full of ghosts. And you may feel their presence the most at Bonaventure Cemetery. There are more than one hundred acres to explore. So, you will be there for a while.

They do offer tours one Sunday a month. We can try to arrange one, depending on your family vacation schedule.

If you don’t want to take the time to go all the way to Bonaventure Cemetery, check out Colonial Park Cemetery. It is within walking distance of many of the squares in Savannah. This cemetery opened in 1750. Many of the people who died during the yellow-fever epidemic are buried here.

There are many other haunted attractions in Savannah that you can check out during your visit!

Explore Old Fort Jackson

Does your family love history? What about cannons? Well, you can experience both when you choose to visit Old Fort Jackson in Savannah. This fort was constructed back in 1808 and additions were made in 1812.

The fort has been carefully preserved, so it looks practically the same as it did back then. I recommend taking a self-guided tour to learn about the history of this fort. Just make sure you stay long enough to hear a cannon or two going off.

Visit the Juliette Gordon Low Home

If you have a Girl Scout in your family, you will want to take a tour of the Juliette Gordon Low Home. This museum is located in the house where Juliette was born. She also started the Girl Scouts from this house.

You can take a guided tour of this house. However, it is recommended that you purchase tickets in advance. So, let me know if you are interested in visiting and I will arrange for the tickets as I am planning your itinerary.

Take a Ghost Tour

There are ghost tours in Savannah during the day and at night. So, you can choose the one that will fit your family’s needs the most. I can help you find a ghost tour and make all the arrangements for you. This will ensure you don’t miss out on this best thing to do in Savannah during your family vacation.

Want to really incorporate ghosts into your Savannah family vacation? Check out these historic inns in Savannah!

Visit the Mercer-Williams House

Plan an Amazing Family Vacation with These Best Things to Do in Savannah - Mercer-Williams House

Have you ever read “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” by John Berendt? If you have, you already know some of the history of the Mercer-Williams House in Savannah.

If you haven’t, this mansion was originally home to Johnny Mercer. Then Jim Williams purchased it. Williams was the only person in the state to be tried four times for the same murder, which occurred in this house.

You can take a tour of the inside of this house. However, you will not be allowed access to the area where the alleged murder took place.

Eat Ice Cream at Leopold’s

Everyone needs to make sure they grab an ice cream cone from Leopold’s when they are visiting Savannah! This ice cream shop opened in 1919. The lines have been down the street ever since.

This is one of those places you should arrive at early in the morning. They normally open around eleven in the morning and the line starts to form a half hour before that.

While I normally don’t approve of only ice cream for lunch, I have been known to make an exception when in Savannah. Trust me when I say the kids will be happy and will eat every bite!

Dine at the Olde Pink House Restaurant

If you don’t have time for a ghost tour, let me recommend dining at the Olde Pink House Restaurant. This beautiful house has been transformed into a restaurant that has ghostly encounters.

This restaurant serves authentic Southern cuisine. So, your taste buds will be dancing from the very first bite. Just don’t be surprised if you feel the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. It’s probably just a ghost or two trying to steal a bite of your yummy food!

Eat Some Cookies

When you are at the City Market, or down on River Street, you must stop at Byrd’s Cookies. This bakery opened in 1924. Their cookies are the absolute best!

They have a large variety of flavors. Each cookie is the size of a quarter. You can sample almost every single flavor before making your purchase. Although, be warned that if you sample them all, you will go home with a bag of each. Or two bags of each, depending on the size of your family.

Find Some Vinyl at Graveface Records and Curiosities

Are you always looking for new-to-you vinyl? You may be able to find exactly what you’ve been searching for at Graveface Records and Curiosities. Inside, there are crates of records for you to peruse.

If you are lucky, you may catch a show during your visit. You can always check the schedule before heading over.

Relax at the Beach on Tybee Island

Tybee Island is a gorgeous destination that is approximately twenty minutes from downtown Savannah. Spending time at this beach is one of the best things to do in Savannah.

In between time in the sand and the water, you can browse the nearby shops and grab a bite to eat.

These are some of the best things to do in Savannah during a family vacation. I can easily find others for your family, once I know what you are all interested in. Then I can personalize your family vacation itinerary, so you are only doing what you all want to while making those memories that matter.

So, are you ready to have me create a personalized family vacation itinerary for your trip to Savannah or another destination?

If you said yes, I would like to invite you to click here to schedule a personalized family vacation planning session with me. When you click the link, you will be taken directly to my digital calendar to schedule a time that is convenient for you.

Weddings are a time for joy and making new memories. Whether you have a sibling or cousin getting married or you are getting married, it is cause for a family celebration. And what better way to celebrate your love for your new spouse and your family than choosing to wed in Savannah? This city has it all. Gorgeous views for incredible weddings. And plenty of things to do during a Savannah family vacation. The best thing is you can combine it all for a few days of fun either before or after the wedding festivities. Today, I am going to share a few wedding options for when you combine a wedding with a Savannah family vacation.

Wedding Options for a Savannah Family Vacation

Georgia State Railroad Museum

There are plenty of historic sites in the city of Savannah. One of the favorites for weddings is the Georgia State Railroad Museum. Locomotives and engines will surround your wedding celebrations. This is the perfect wedding option for anyone who loves trains.

The National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Airforce

This is another museum in Savannah that can be transformed for your wedding day. There is an intimate chapel out in the lush gardens. Inside, the rotunda is perfect for wedding receptions of all sizes. Just don’t forget to grab a few wedding photos in front of the B-17 Flying Fortress.

Churchill’s Pub

Churchill’s Pub is one of the most popular pubs in Savannah. There are three areas within the pub for you to choose from. I love the rooftop terrace during the spring and fall. The wine cellar in the basement is perfect for hot summer days. And the private banquet room is nice at any time of the year.

Wedding Options for a Savannah Family Vacation

Old Fort Jackson

Old Fort Jackson was built back in 1808. There are so many reasons why people don’t think of this fort when it comes time to exchange their wedding vows. However, I always wonder why, because of the gorgeous views that can be seen from here. You even have the option to have soldiers fire off muskets and cannons after your “I do’s”.

Savannah Riverboat Cruises

One of my favorite places for weddings in Savannah is the Savannah Riverboat. Heading out on a cruise on the Savannah River is an incredible way to begin your new life together. The best part is everything from the ceremony to the reception is in one place. So, you never need to worry about your guests getting lost along the way. Plus, the riverboat is close to many of the historic inns of Savannah

These are some of the best wedding options in Savannah. You can easily decide to have your wedding in this city and then celebrate with a family vacation in Savannah either before or after the wedding. The choice is yours, and I guarantee everyone will have a blast as you explore everything the city of Savannah has to offer.

So, are you ready to book a family vacation in Savannah and use it as a wedding venue too?

If you said yes, I would like to invite you to schedule a planning session with me by clicking here. When you click on this link, you will be taken directly to my digital calendar to schedule a time that is convenient for you.

Southern charm is everywhere in the city of Savannah. Add in a horse and carriage ride, unique architecture, and lots of history, and you have the perfect family vacation destination! You can easily rent an Airbnb near Tybee Beach while in Savannah. You could stay in any of the hotels that are located in and near the city. The best place to stay during a vacation in Savannah, though is one of the historic inns. The best historic inns of Savannah are located within the city’s neighborhoods. This makes them perfect for when you want to spend your days and nights exploring the city or heading out on ghost tours. Today, I am going to share my favorite historic inns of Savannah.

Check Out the Historic Inns of Savannah

The Marshall House

The Marshall House is a beautiful historic inn right in the heart of downtown Savannah. Its centralized location makes it the best choice when you know you will be doing a lot of walking around the city. Plus, it is right down the street from Leopold’s Ice Cream.

This historic inn was constructed in 1851. The Marshall House was used as a Union hospital during the Civil War. The rooms still have their original doors, floors, and many other architectural quirks. The clawfoot tub turned into a shower adds charm to the bathroom.

You can learn more about the history of this inn by walking through the hallways. That is where historic photographs and other documents are on display. Oh, and before I forget to mention this, The Marshall House is haunted. So, it matches perfectly with Savannah’s ghostly atmosphere.

Kehoe House

Kehoe House is a beautiful inn located near Columbia Square and the Davenport House Museum. This inn was constructed in 1892. There are only thirteen guest rooms at this inn. So, you will definitely feel pampered during your stay. You can easily spend at least part of your day out on your balcony or on the covered side veranda. There is a private garden courtyard that is wonderful for relaxing too.

Check Out the Historic Inns of Savannah - Kehoe House

East Bay Inn

Many of the historic inns of Savannah were built in the mid to late 1800s. This includes the East Bay Inn, which was constructed in 1852. You will find this inn directly across from River Street. This makes it the best option for your family vacation if you know you will be spending a lot of time down by the river.

Eliza Thompson House

The Eliza Thompson House is an adults-only historic inn in Savannah. Therefore, you will only be able to stay here when you are on a family vacation with your adult children. This is the oldest of all the historic inns.

The Eliza Thompson House was the very first home built on Jones Street, which is only minutes from Forsyth Park. Eliza and Joseph Thompson raised their seven children in the home before it was turned into an inn.

The River Street Inn

The beautiful River Street Inn was once an old cotton warehouse. This historic inn overlooks the Savannah River. All the guest rooms offer original pine wood floors, authentic fireplaces, and exposed brick walls. Some rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows, which are perfect for capturing the views of the river and surrounding area.

When you walk into the atrium, you will instantly see the grand staircase. Stand there for a moment and wonder what this space would have been like more than two hundred years ago when the building was used as a cotton warehouse.

The Gastonian

This historic inn of Savannah is actually two restored residential homes located on Gaston Street. The inn is located near Forsyth Park. There are only seventeen guest rooms here. They all have stunning chandeliers, working fireplaces, and private balconies.

You can easily walk to any of the squares in the city, as well as River Street and all the restaurants and coffee shops from The Gastonian.

Olde Harbour Inn

The Olde Harbour Inn is in a wonderful location, close to the Savannah City Market and the Moon River Brewing Company. This inn is slightly more rustic than many of the others. That doesn’t mean you won’t fall in love with the tall ceilings and architectural details, though.

The guest rooms at this inn are quite spacious and are considered more apartments than standard rooms. This extra space will allow your family to spread out more during your stay.

Hamilton-Turner Inn

The Hamilton-Turner Inn is near Lafayette Square in downtown Savannah. This building was constructed as a home for Samuel Pugh Hamilton in 1873. It wasn’t turned into an inn until 1997.

This luxurious inn will have you thinking you should have visited this city much sooner. After all, you won’t be able to resist the four-poster beds and high-end finishes. Oh, and don’t forget the southern charm!

These are my favorite historic inns of Savannah, but there are others you can choose to stay at during your family vacation. Simply tell me which historic inn will fulfill your families needs the most, and I will book your stay while planning the rest of your vacation in Savannah. Yes, it is as easy as that to mix luxurious accommodations with time at the beach and a few ghosts along the way.

So, are you ready to book a family vacation and stay in one of the historic inns of Savannah?

Ghost lovers will tell you that ghosts are everywhere. You may or may not believe them, depending on how you feel about mysterious beings. However, your feelings may change once you have had the opportunity to experience the hauntings in the southeastern areas of the US.

As you walk around certain cities in the southeast, you may see shadows and feel cool breezes. You may also feel as if you are being followed.

Check Out These Haunted Southeastern Towns if You are Interested in Ghosts

Nashville, Tennessee

Normally, you would think that the streets of Nashville would only be filled with country music stars and the music they play. And that is true… But there are also ghosts on those city streets and within many of the houses deemed haunted in the area.

Memphis, Tennessee

Memphis is another city in Tennessee that is filled with ghosts and haunted tales around town. Beale Street is one of the best places to have ghostly encounters. But ghosts will be around you wherever you are in this southern city.

Beaufort, North Carolina

Blackbeard once lived in Beaufort, North Carolina, so you know you will at least have a run-in with his ghost during your visit. Add in all the other pirates and the ghost ship sightings and you may be afraid to walk around at night. I recommend learning about all the different legends and mysterious events during your vacation in Beaufort, NC. It will have you yearning for more during your family vacation to this haunted town.

Charleston, South Carolina

The history of Charleston, SC is quite tumultuous. Every story you hear will be filled with bloody wars, raging pirates, and numerous disasters. There will be no doubt in your mind that ghosts are real by the time you have heard all the stories passed down through the generations in this area of the southeast.

Savannah, Georgia

Savannah is probably the city with the most ghosts in the southeast. In fact, it has been given the nickname of America’s most haunted city. Many people will vacation in Savannah specifically for the purpose of seeing one of the infamous ghosts.

All these towns in the United States’ southeast are haunted. While you could try to find the ghosts on your own, there are plenty of tours available. Each tour offers a unique look at the ghosts, the hauntings, and even the legends from years past. The tour you take in Nashville will look quite different than the ghost tour you take in Savannah. But in the end, you will have a sixth sense when it comes to ghostly happenings in whichever city you are in.

Are you ready to conquer a few fears and meet some ghosts in one of these haunted towns? Or are you ready to simply enjoy the paranormal that you have known to exist all along?

No matter how you feel about ghosts, you won’t disagree that the south is the best place to be closest to them.

A road trip to any of these southeastern US destinations can have you taking numerous ghost tours. I always say curiosity sparks imagination and that will definitely happen during this unique type of family vacation!

So, are you ready to plan a family vacation and explore these southeastern ghost towns?

Planning a vacation can be a lot of fun, especially when you decide to visit the charming city of Savannah. This historical destination is perfect for long walks, river cruises, ghost tours, and even long days at the beach. However, did you also know you can include numerous romantic activities in a vacation in Savannah, GA? You can! And I am going to share the best romantic activities in this city with you today.

Romantic Activities to Consider When Planning a Vacation in Savannah, GA

Elite Travel Journeys Tybee Island Lighthouse

Walking Through the Historic District

As you walk through the historic district of the city of Savannah, you will find yourself passing by charming homes. The twenty-four historic squares only add to the charm, and I recommend you walk through them all. You can walk through this area at any time of the day. The evening hours really bring out the romance though. You can enjoy the setting sun, as you sit on a bench in one of the squares and unwind at the end of a long day. If you happen to be down by City Market at the end of the day, I highly recommend grabbing a wine slushie from the Georgia Tasting Room. It will taste amazing, as you sit and reminisce about the day.

Enjoy a Picnic Lunch

Packing a picnic lunch to enjoy in one of Savannah’s scenic spots is one of the most romantic activities in this city. A couple favorite locations to spread out a blanket include Bonaventure Cemetery, Forsyth Park, and Skidaway Island State Park.

Enjoy the Sunrise at Tybee Island

If you don’t mind a little sand, you can change that picnic lunch into a picnic breakfast out on Tybee Island. Watching the sun come up over the water is a spectacular sight you won’t want to miss while on vacation in Savannah, GA. You can either walk onto the Tybee Pier and sit under the pavilion or grab a section of the sand when you arrive. Once the sun is up, I recommend holding hands as you take a long walk on the sandy shoreline. Then write your names in the sand and take a selfie before you venture out on the next adventure of your day.

Take a Walk in Nature

After you arrive in Savannah, you will quickly realize that you will do a lot of walking during this vacation. One of my favorite walks is in any of the nature areas in this city. Wandering through the Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens will add romance to any day. And yet, so will visiting the wildlife over at the Oatland Island Wildlife Center.

Romantic Dinners

There are so many places to enjoy a romantic dinner while on vacation in Savannah, GA. 700 Drayton Restaurant can be found inside a 19th century mansion. This restaurant overlooks Forsyth Park, so you will have amazing views as you dine. Other romantic restaurants in Savannah include the Olde Pink House, Elizabeth on 37th, and Circa 1875.

Rooftop Cocktails in the Evening

After a nice romantic dinner, you can head over to the nearest rooftop restaurant to enjoy a few cocktails. Peregrin, a rooftop bar at the top of the Perry Lane Hotel, is perfect if you want views of Savannah’s historic district. However, if you are in search of views of the river, I recommend visiting Top Deck, which is above the Cotton Sail’s Hotel.

Enjoy a Couples’ Spa Treatment

Before you end your vacation in Savannah, GA, you must enjoy a couples’ spa treatment. There are multiple spas to choose from in this city, but the Magnolia Spa at the Marriott Savannah Riverfront stands out as one of the best.

These are a few of the romantic activities you must consider when you are planning a vacation in Savannah, GA. There are others and we can discuss those, as I am planning your next romantic vacation.

So, are you ready to plan a vacation in Savannah, GA and do a couple of these romantic activities?

If you said yes, I would like to invite you to schedule a planning session with me by clicking here. When you click on this link, you will be taken directly to my digital calendar to schedule a time that is convenient for you.

Have you been yearning to head out on a family adventure? There are so many incredible places to take your family, whether you are just taking your kids and spouse or your parents as well. Maybe you even want to get away with your siblings and nieces and nephews! Planning a vacation to Savannah, GA just the ticket. Savannah is one of those stunning destinations that are perfect for family vacations. I know if you took the time to vacation in Savannah, GA, you would be hooked on these family vacations for life. And that is where this travel guide comes in. I wanted you to know a little about what you could expect if you did choose Savannah for your next fun family vacation.

Savannah is a bustling city that is known for its walkability, as well as being dog-friendly. As you walk past the mansions and public squares, you will find yourself engrossed in the history of this destination. At the same time, you will know that Tybee Island and the beach are right down the road for those days when you simply want to relax in the sun and the sand.

Days in Savannah can be spent in so many ways. But you must have a plan if you don’t want to miss everything this city is known for.

History in Savannah

Back in 1733, General James Oglethorpe found his ship on the bluffs of the Savannah River. At that time, this area was unnamed, but it quickly became the colony of Georgia and Savannah was the very first city. As the streets in Savannah were created, twenty-four town squares were inserted amongst them. Currently, there are only twenty-two of those public squares left for you to walk through or sit down for a minute to reflect and relax.

As you are in these public squares, you will notice that they are the burial sites for a few people. Or at least that is what you will think. Many of those marked graves may have other people buried in them, while the person named on the marker is buried elsewhere. It is one of Savannah’s mysteries that will pique your interest.

Over the years, Savannah has seen much success. It has also seen the devastation of two fires that destroyed a good portion of the city. Thankfully, Savannah came back stronger each time. The Historic Savannah Foundation even ensured that the Historic District was spared from demolition and designated as a National Historic Landmark instead.

Many other historical events have taken place in Savannah over the years. There were wars, an infestation in the cotton that ruined the crops, and events that are now part of Savannah’s hauntings. One historical event I feel I much touch on is Savannah’s Waving Girl.

Florence Margaret Martus greeted ships by waving either a handkerchief or lantern from the Elba Island Lighthouse. She did this for forty-four years until she retired in 1931. There were many stories as to why the Waving Girl waved to approximately fifty thousand boats during those years. Some people believe she was looking for a long-lost love. While the true story may never be known, she was at least a beacon of hope to those returning home from sea.

During your family vacation in Savannah, GA, you can visit the Waving Girl statue down on River Street.

Weather in Savannah, GA

Since Savannah is down in the southeast, it has a subtropical climate. There are more than two hundred sunny days every year. While it rains, it hardly ever snows. When you add all those things up, you get the perfect vacation destination, no matter when you decide to travel.

Spring in Savannah

The temperatures can reach the 70s and 80s in Savannah during the spring months. There is less humidity during the spring too, which makes it more comfortable to be outside walking around. Despite the warmer temperatures, the water temperature is still quite cold until the end of May.

Summer in Savannah

It is common for temperatures to reach the 90s or higher during the summer months in Savannah. The humidity also climbs, which is why so many people head over the beaches most days. Rain is common during the summer, especially during the month of August. Don’t expect the rain to cool things down though. All it does is make things wet and causes the humidity to rise even more!

Fall in Savannah

The temperatures drop slightly with fall’s arrival in Savannah. Early fall can still see days that reach the mid-80s, while late fall brings temperatures in the 70s.

Winter in Savannah

High temperatures of 60 degrees are what you should expect if you decide to vacation in Savannah during the winter. And since it hardly ever snows, you don’t need to worry about being stuck inside during your visit.

What to Pack for a Vacation in Savannah, GA

During the warmer months of the year, you can get away with shorts and short-sleeved shirts, as well as sundresses and sandals. However, during the spring and fall, you will want to have warmer clothes available, especially at night.

The air conditioning can make buildings quite cold during the summer months. Therefore, a light jacket can be helpful if you get cold easily. Umbrellas or raincoats are a must during the summer and can even be helpful during the spring.

The winter months are cold to the locals, but you may think it is warm depending on what the weather is like where you live. That means that packing for a winter vacation in Savannah can be a little tricky. I recommend taking mostly pants and long-sleeved shirts and sweaters. You can throw a couple of pairs of shorts and short-sleeved shirts into your suitcase, along with a sundress or two, just in case. However, you may never actually wear them. It does get quite cool at night during the winter, so a jacket is another item you will want to have with you.

Activities to Embrace While on Vacation in Savannah

Family vacations in Savannah are always filled with fun activities everyone will love. Your days can be spent wandering through museum exhibits and art galleries. Or you can head over to Tybee Island to swim, take a ride in a boat, or simply relax in the sand. If you are ready for even more beach adventures, you can take a quick drive up to Hilton Head Island.

While you are at the beach, you will want to make sure you are signed up for one of the dolphin tours. If that is not enough time on the water for you, everyone can grab a kayak or paddleboard and head out for additional fun. Taking a river cruise on the Savannah River is a thrilling option when it comes to being on the water and seeing panoramic views of Savannah’s attractions. You can even choose to take a sunset cruise with your family to see how the ambiance changes in this city at night.

You cannot spend time in Savannah and not go on one of the many ghost tours. There are almost too many to count! I love finding the perfect ghost tours for families and I guarantee you will only be as spooked as you want to be.

Summer vacations in Savannah are going to be hot. If you plan on staying in the city for the day, you must check out Ellis Square Fountains. You can walk through the streaming water to cool down or at least enjoy the mist from the fountains. At night, the fountain lights up in all colors. It is truly a sight to see.

Other family fun activities during a vacation in Savannah include:

  • Segway Tours
  • Golfing on World-Class Courses
  • Trolley Tours
  • Eating Candy and Ice Cream on River Street
  • Shopping at City Market
  • Cooking Classes
  • Picnics in the Park
  • Watching Performances at Savannah Theatre or Lucas Theatre
  • Hiking the Nature Trails

Top Places to See in Savannah

There are so many hot spots to add to your itinerary for a family vacation in Savannah. The good news is that you can take a tour of Savannah to see quite a few of the attractions in a short amount of time. This will give you more time to explore the attractions you want to see more of.

The Mercer Williams House is a must-see for everyone visiting Savannah. You cannot see the entire home, but you can explore the first floor and shop at the gift shop. During your tour, you won’t hear anything about the alleged murder that took place in this home or the book that was based on this house. You will learn about the architecture of the home, as well as the original owner, Johnny Mercer.

Fort Pulaski can be found out on Cockspur Island, which is between the city and Tybee Island. This national monument should not be missed during a vacation in Savannah. You can explore on your own or take one of the guided tours. I always recommend visiting on the weekends, because that is when historic weapons demonstrations are held. After checking out the museum, you can hike on one of the trails. The North Pier trail is only a quarter of a mile long, while the Overlook Trail is three-quarters of a mile. The longest trail is six miles and that is the McQueens Island Rails to Trails.

One of the most historic places to visit in Savannah is The Pirates’ House. This is actually a restaurant that serves family-friendly meals with a side of history. The Pirates’ House was established back in 1753 and was the actual location that inspired events that occurred in Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson.

A few more top places to see in Savannah include:

  • Cathedral of St. John the Baptist
  • Bonaventure Cemetery
  • Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace
  • Forsyth Park
  • The Olde Pink House

Amazing Festivals You Can’t-Miss in Savannah

So many festivals and events take place in Savannah throughout the year. I could honestly write pages about them all. I won’t bore you with them all here, but understand I will find the ones your family will be most interested in during your vacation in Savannah.

Here are the amazing festivals you can’t miss in Savannah:

St. Patrick’s Day Parade

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Savannah is the second largest one in the US. Marching groups and bands come from all over the country to be in this parade every year. While this city has been observing this holiday since 1813, the celebrations have changed immensely over the years. The parade is now between three and four hours long. And if you decide to go, you will be amongst upwards of four hundred thousand people watching along the streets.

When the parade is over, there are many other activities you can participate in for a few days. Over in Forsyth Park, the water in the fountain is turned green. Along River Street, you will have the chance to eat, drink, and listen to live music all day and long into the night. The City Market turns into a party hub too, so make sure that is one of the destinations on your list at this time of the year.

Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) Sidewalk Arts Festival

Towards the end of April into the beginning of May, there is a lot of extra color within Forsyth Park. It is at that time of the year when the Savannah College of Art & Design Sidewalk Arts Festival takes place. Students in the area are given chalk to create stunning masterpieces that will then be judged. All the artwork stays in place for a week or so, unless of course, it rains.

This event also hosts “living pictures”, which is when actors and models depict scenes that you would normally see in photographs. Attending this event will definitely spark your creative side and get your entire family talking!

Savannah Tour of Homes & Gardens

As you walk through the streets of Savannah, you are going to see quite a few gorgeous homes. While you can’t go up and knock on the door to go inside, there are a few homes you can check out if you attend the Savannah Tour of Homes & Gardens. Only ticket holders to this event can go into some of the best homes in the city to see the architecture and even the furnishings. When you are not exploring homes, you will find yourself wandering through lush, colorful gardens.

Savannah’s River Walk is located alongside the Savannah River. The street that you will find yourself walking on is called River Street. But there is also a promenade area that is between the cobblestone street and the river.

Old cotton warehouses line River Street. They have now been turned into shops, pubs, restaurants, and art galleries. There are seventy-five different businesses in all to explore. It could honestly take you all day to see them all.

One of the favorite shops is the River Street Sweets Candy Store. Inside, you will find all types of southern candy, as well as any other candy you can imagine! You are definitely not going to walk out of this candy shop without a bag in your hand! I prefer the fudge, but with all the pralines, candy apples, bear claws, cakes, and pies, you may have a difficult time choosing just one item.

The old-fashioned open-air market is another favorite because you can grab some souvenirs without missing out on the views of the river.

Experience the Beauty of Savannah’s River Walk

If you really want to see the river or the River Walk from a different perspective, I recommend taking one of the Savannah Riverboat Cruises. There are multiple cruises every day and you can even do a dinner or late-night cruise. The riverboat will take you down to Old Fort Jackson and back again, while you listen to a narrated tour of all the sights you are seeing along the way.

As you are walking along Savannah’s River Walk, you will want to take the time to stop at the many different historical sites. Those sites include the World War II Monument, Waving Girl Statue, and the Olympic Cauldron.

Don’t worry if you get hungry along the way either, because there are plenty of places to grab a bite to eat and a drink! Huey’s is perfect if you are craving beignets, while Olympic Café and Vic’s on the River offer something a little more substantial. If you want a drink with a view, then I recommend Rocks on the Rooftop. This rooftop bar never disappoints!

There are always different events and festivals held down at Savannah’s River Walk throughout the year, so you may want to plan your visit accordingly. A few of the more popular events include the Savannah Food & Wine Festival, Savannah Craft Brew Festival, Savannah Bacon Festival, and Christmas on the River.

I love visiting Savannah and think it is a must-see destination when you are doing a southern road trip. If you are ready to get your southern charm on, I can add this city your itinerary and have you exploring Savannah’s River Walk in no time at all!

So, are you ready to have me create a personalized family vacation itinerary for your next trip to Savannah or another destination?

Savannah is a city filled with southern charm. You could easily spend weeks seeing all the different attractions and sights. This is why I thought I would help you out a little. I know you simply do not have the time to take weeks off from your busy job to search for things to do. I have discovered a few gems you simply must see when you are on vacation in Savannah with your family. The best part is you can easily fit all these best places to see in Savannah into the few days, or a week. This is the perfect amount of time to make those precious family vacation memories.

Top 5 Best Places to See in Savannah

Elite Travel Journeys Tybee Island LighthouseChippewa Square

There are twenty-two squares in Savannah. So, I understand if you simply cannot see them all. But you must take the time to see Chippewa Square. This square has always been popular. But it gained fame after being included in the movie, Forrest Gump. This square was designed in 1815. It is home to the historic Savannah Theatre, which is one of the oldest theaters in the country.

Tybee Island Lighthouse

The Tybee Island Lighthouse dates back to 1736. The tower of the lighthouse is 145 feet tall. There are three Light Keeper’s Cottages near the lighthouse, as well as a Summer Kitchen that was constructed back in 1812. You will find many archeological items within the Summer Kitchen. In addition to seeing the buildings mentioned above, you will also want to see the Tybee Museum in Battery Garland.

Fort Pulaski

Fort Pulaski is a mason fortification that is located on Cockspur Island. While this fort was used during the Civil War, it was also used as a prisoner of war camp. You can take one of the guided tours during your visit or you can simply start wandering around on your own. There are eleven different stops in all, but the ones you should pay the most attention to include the Visitor Center, Cemetery, John Wesley Monument, Contraband Camp, North Pier, and the Cockspur Island Lighthouse.

Bonaventure Cemetery

The Bonaventure Cemetery is located on the Bonaventure Plantation. While this was originally a private cemetery in 1846, it became public in 1907. There are many notable people buried in this cemetery, but many tourists also visit for the architecture and sculptures, as well as the old trees that line the roads. This cemetery was also featured in the book, and eventually movie, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.

Christ Church

Christ Church was established back in 1733 and it is often referred to as the Mother Church of Georgia. Worships are held in this church on Sundays, as well as Wednesdays. However, as with every other church, you are always welcomed to enter at any time.

These are the best places to see in Savannah and they must be on your itinerary during your visit. I can help you add these to your list of things to do, in addition to all the other items that pique your interest.

So, are you ready to have me create a personalized family vacation itinerary for your next trip to Savannah or another destination?
