When you think of Hawaii, you think of surfing, whale watching, waterfalls, volcanoes, and naturally beaches. Did you know that over 100 beautiful beaches encompass the Hawaiian Islands? Each one of the beaches in Hawaii offers soft sand, sparkling water, and plenty of sunshine. Therefore, you can easily visit any beach in Hawaii and make memories with your family. Today, I’m sharing 5 of the amazing beaches in Hawaii that will be perfect for your next family-friendly vacation. So, start imagining all the family friendly activities you can do during a Hawaiian vacation.

5 Amazing Beaches in Hawaii for a Family Friendly Vacation

Tunnels Beach (Kaua’i)

5 Amazing Beaches in Hawaii for a Family Friendly Vacation - Tunnels Beach

Tunnels Beach is surrounded by vivacious palms and flowering ironwood trees. It is one of the best beaches in Hawaii for the snorkeling and scuba diving enthusiasts in your family.

This beach earned its moniker from the lava tubes that form underwater caverns. Those caverns make the beach such a magical place for underwater exploration. So, I recommend taking the time to explore those underwater wonders. And also taking your camera with you to capture a few moments of underwater fun with your family.

If you are looking to stay above water, Tunnels Beach offers plenty of options. It is a favorite among those who surf, kite surf and wind surf.

While it is fantastic during the day, the sunsets from this North Shore beach are spectacular. So, I recommend catching one during your Hawaiian family vacation.

Kapalua Bay (Maui)

Soft white sand beaches and calm waters create the perfect backdrop for Kapalua Bay. It is one of the best beaches in Hawaii for beginning snorkelers to get some practice. And families with little ones get to enjoy their time in the water without having to worry about rough surf.

This bay is protected by two reefs that extend out forming a “C” shaped cove. These reefs ensure the coral, and the tropical wildlife is truly spectacular. Although, you won’t see all the marine life if you don’t venture out to the reefs.

This beach is as popular as it is easy to get to. However, it’s large enough you will have room to spread out your towels for a nice relaxing day.

Holopo’e Beach (Lana’i)

Holopo’e Beach is on a protected bay has a pristine exquisiteness about it. The beach in Hawaii comes equipped with grills, picnic tables, and showers.

What makes this area so unique is its sizable tide pools. Those tide pools were created from volcanic rock. All those rocks assist with keeping the waters calm. This allows your swimming and exploration to be that much more enjoyable.

You can take a hike along the cliffs. And if you’re lucky, you may also get the chance to witness the lovely spinner dolphins.

Hapuna Beach (The Big Island)

5 Amazing Beaches in Hawaii for a Family Friendly Vacation - Beach in Hawaii

Hapuna Beach is located in Hapuna Beach State Park. This beach is regularly voted one of the “Best Beaches in the World”. This is due to its beauty, size and the fact that it is always sunny.

Fun Fact: This is one of the beaches in Hawaii that gets only 10 inches of rain a year!

Hapuna Beach is also very popular amongst families. So, if you arrive and it’s too crowded, I recommend heading down to Wailea Beach. It is just south of Hapuna.

If you are looking for something else to do with the family while at the park, you have options. Hike along the Ala Kahakai coastal trail to catch some remarkable views and anchialine ponds.

What is an anchialine pond you ask? It is a landlocked body of water with a below ground connection to the ocean.

Is a Caribbean family vacation in your future? Visit these beaches in Antigua and Barbuda!

Punlau’u Beach (The Big Island) – One of the Favorite Beaches in Hawaii

This picturesque beach in Hawaii is not only famous for its black sand but also for its endangered sea turtles. It is one of the few beaches that sea turtles choose to lay their eggs.

You will also often find Hawaiian green sea turtles basking in the sun here. However, the real lucky people may also encounter the rare Hawksbill Turtle while in the water.

Make sure you bring your water shoes. You will need to climb on lava rocks to get into the water here.

Now that you know some of the hot spots in Hawaii, prepare to discover optimal beach life in the richly beautiful Pacific archipelago. I guarantee there is nothing better than spending time with your family, as you get a little rest and relaxation on a beach in Hawaii.

Heading to the beach is a popular option for family vacations. However, many of the beaches families choose are overcrowded. If you want to escape the crowds, you may want to think outside the box a little when planning your next beach family vacation. One of your options is to vacation near one of the best volcanic beaches in the world. Not as many people visit these beaches, because they are filled with black sand instead of soft white sand. However, in my opinion, black sand beaches can be just as incredible as their white sand counterparts. And there is usually so much more to see and experience on them too. Today, I am sharing the best volcanic beaches to visit during your next family vacation.

Volcanic Beaches to Visit

Punalu’u Beach in Hawaii

One of my favorite volcanic beaches is Punalu’u Beach in Hawaii. This black sand beach was created from all the volcanic activity on the Big Island. Lush, green vegetation surrounds this beach, making it a beautiful place to visit.

I recommend heading to this beach early in the morning. That is when you can see green sea turtles resting on the shoreline.

Reynisfjara in Iceland

Volcanic Beaches to Visit - Reynisfjara Beach in Iceland

Out of all the volcanoes in Iceland, eighteen of them have erupted over the years. Therefore, you will discover numerous black sand beaches in this country.

One of the most popular volcanic beaches to visit in Iceland is Reynisfjara. You may also hear this beach referred to as Vik Beach.

This beach is lined with rock formations. You will find that you have unobstructed views of the entire area when you visit.

Karekare Beach in New Zealand

This volcanic beach is popular with the locals who enjoy surfing in New Zealand. The waves at this beach are considered the best in the country.

You don’t need to be a surfer to enjoy this gorgeous beach though. Everyone can watch the surfers or simply walk along the shoreline, enjoying the views.

Mosteiros Beach in The Azores

Mosteiros Beach is located on São Miguel Island in The Azores. Volcanic rock formations can be found scattered around this beach amongst the black sand.

One of the best places to make memories with your family is out in the water by the two rock formations. Head there right before sunset and then watch the sun dipping lower in the sky. Talk about one of the best ways to end a magical day in The Azores!

Waianapanapa Beach in Hawaii

This stunning black sand beach can be found inside Waianapanapa State Park. A visit to this beach will have your family checking out volcanic rock formations, as well as natural blow holes. It is possible to spend an entire day between the park and beach, so plan accordingly.

Playa Jardín in Canary Islands

This beautiful beach in the Canary Islands is full of black sand, lush gardens, and swaying palm trees. Spend part of your day relaxing on the black sand. Then head over to one of the cafes on the promenade and enjoy a meal while continuing to appreciate the beach views.

Lovina Beach in Bali

There are so many things to do in Bali for a family vacation. However, spending time at Lovina Beach should be at the top of your list. This volcanic beach is tucked away amongst the rice paddies. It has calm water thanks to the nearby coral reef.

Lovina Beach is one of the best beaches for snorkeling in Bali. The best times to visit this beach are either in the morning or later in the day. The sunrise and sunset from the sand is spectacular.

Perissa Beach in Greece

Have you been wanting to visit Santorini in Greece? Well, you can check that item plus a volcanic beach off your travel bucket list if you choose it for your next family vacation!

Perissa Beach is located on the island of Santorini. Relax on the sand, as you glance out at the water or back towards the sea of white and blue from the houses.

When you tire of this black sandy beach, head to a beach bar to enjoy a drink and some food. Don’t worry, you can always head back to paradise and relax once again.

These are some of the best volcanic beaches to visit during family vacations. If you are trying to find a destination that isn’t as popular for your next family trip, one of these black sand beaches should be exactly what you are searching for. And I can make all your vacation dreams come true, so you can make those incredible memories with your family.
