There are tens of thousands of rivers in the United States. Some of those rivers are small, while others like the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers are massive. Many of the larger rivers in the US have made it possible for cargo containers to reach their destination via boat. And those same rivers have been used by river cruise boats to take passengers on adventures of a lifetime. Almost all the rivers in the US have been used for fun family activities though. Families like yours can venture down them during rafting tours or by tubing, kayaking, and even paddleboarding. Your family can even hike alongside some of the most popular rivers in the country. If you have been searching for a unique family vacation activity, I recommend checking out these US river trips.

US River Trips to Consider for Your Next Family Vacation

Virgin River

The Virgin River flows through the beauty of what is known as Zion National Park. This river is the perfect choice for your next family vacation if you all love to hike. One of the most popular hikes in Zion National Park is the Narrows. This trail will take your family along the Virgin River, as you hike near one-thousand-foot-tall canyon walls. You have two options for this hiking adventure. The first is to start at the Temple of the Sinawava and hike ten miles north until you reach Big Spring. The other option is to go south starting at the North Fork and hike sixteen miles to Big Spring.

American River

The American River in California is an excellent option for whitewater rafting. This river is one hundred nineteen miles long. The river begins within the Sierra Nevada Mountains and ends in the Sacramento River. There are three forks in the American River, and they include the North, Middle, and South. The beginner friendly rafting fork is the South. That area offers Class II and III rapids, which are perfect for half day trips. The other two forks offer Class IV and V rapids, which are better if your family is considered expert rafters. If you don’t care about whitewater rafting, you can always choose to hike near the North Fork. There are plenty of swimming holes there, which are wonderful for cooling down on those hotter days of the year.

Hanalei River

You will need to take a vacation in Kauai if you want to participate in activities on the Hanalei River. This river forms near Mount Wai’ale’ale and goes directly into Hanalei Bay before reaching the Pacific Ocean. Paddleboarding is a favorite family activity on this US river. During your one-mile journey down the river, your family will have the opportunity to see hibiscus shrubs, palm trees, taro fields, and rushing waterfalls in the distance.

Hudson River

Deep within the Adirondack Mountains in Upstate New York is where the Hudson River is located. Yet, you will find that same river more than three hundred miles to the south separating the states of New York and New Jersey. Kayaking and canoeing are two favorite activities on this river. But if you are looking for other options, I recommend taking a walk on the Walkway Over the Hudson, which is just over a mile long. You may also want to venture over to Bannerman Castle and wander around the abandoned grounds.

Columbia River

The Columbia River begins within the Rocky Mountains. This river is slightly more than twelve hundred miles long and goes through the states of Washington and Oregon before it reaches the Pacific Ocean. My favorite spot along this river is the Columbia River Gorge. It is in that area where your family can do a little windsurfing, kiteboarding, or whitewater rafting.

Colorado River

The Colorado River is quite large at more than fourteen hundred miles. This river actually goes through seven different states, as well as eleven national parks. Most people prefer to go whitewater rafting on this river near the Grand Canyon. There are a few different multi-day rafting adventures to choose from, so I know we can find one that will work best for your family.

Merced River

The Merced River is another river located in California. You can combine time at this river with a family vacation in Yosemite National Park. In fact, one of the best ways to see both Yosemite Falls and El Capitan is to take one of the river rafting adventures along the Merced River.

Snake River

The one thousand plus mile Snake River begins in Wyoming and travels through three more states until it reaches the Pacific Ocean. One of the best ways to experience this river with your family is to hop onto a drift boat. The boat will take you from Jackson Hole to Grand Teton National Park. It is a rustic experience that everyone will love.

These are a few of the US river trips you should consider for your next family vacation. Each US river offers unique experiences, so I can work with you during our planning session to see which one offers everything your family will love during a vacation.

Where else can you enjoy the exhilaration of whitewater rafting while also taking in some of the most stunning scenery in the United States? Forests, mountains, and a variety of wildlife make whitewater rafting on the Snake River a must for visitors to the Grand Tetons.

The river goes past the Tetons. It travels all the way through the southern section of Idaho before reaching the state of Oregon. You can spend time on many different sections of this river. So, you will never find yourself out of your comfort zone.

The section of the Snake River that is closest to the Tetons for whitewater rafting is eight miles long. The entire eight-mile journey will have you conquering class two rapids that include Champagne, the Big Kahuna, and Lunch counter.

Benefits of Whitewater Rafting on the Snake River Adventures

  • Fun and excitement.

If you like adventure, you’re sure to like whitewater rafting. There is nothing boring about it. You’ll be kept busy paddling and experiencing the ride of your life. And it all comes with an excellent view of the Grand Teton Mountains.

  • Family bonding.

Family river rafting is quality time together that doesn’t involve a screen. Working as a team to paddle your raft is one of the best ways to bond with each other, even siblings who seem to never get along. Children as young as 6 years old can participate in rafting when the water level is low enough.

Other Whitewater Rafting on Snake River Options

If you do not think you are ready for a whitewater rafting adventure, you can go on one of the scenic trips instead. Those scenic rides are also done in rafts. But you will not tackle the rapids like you would on the other tours.

These two types of Snake River tours are completed in one day. However, there are some options that will have you out on the water for a few days. One of those whitewater rafting adventures will take you down to Hell’s Canyon. This area of the river is the deepest gorge in the country. In some areas, the depth reaches seven thousand nine hundred feet.

Massive rockslides and huge boulders have ended up in the Hell’s Canyon section of the river and those items have created some of the best whitewater rapids within the Pacific Northwest. This adventure normally takes between four and five days, so you will want to plan your vacation accordingly.

At night, you will camp on sandy beaches. Plus, you will have enough downtime to do a few hikes along the way, while also swimming in the warm water of the river.

No matter which whitewater rafting, or non-whitewater rafting, tour you choose, you will be amazed at what you can see along the way. Snow-capped mountain peaks will lead to views of soaring eagles and wild mountain goats.

You cannot visit the Tetons and not conquer the Snake River during a whitewater rafting adventure! If your family is ready to tackle such an extreme adventure, give me a call today. We can add whitewater rafting to your Teton road trip itinerary and make sure no one in your family is bored during the adventure.

As a family travel expert, I am passionate about creating all-inclusive national park vacations for busy families.  I have teamed up with companies that have earned top honors for creating the best national park vacations for over 25 years. Over that time, I’ve learned a few things about planning all-inclusive adventure vacations at our national parks, from Yellowstone to Yosemite and more. Below you will find the Montana family adventure I did with my family this summer. Yes, during Covid-19, but I can tell you it was just what the doctor ordered. When I heard a work-a-holic say he hadn’t thought about work once, I knew it was the perfect vacation.

Montana: Big Sky, Yellowstone National Park, and Paradise Valley

Rally the kids, don your favorite cowboy hat, and get ready for an action-packed, all-inclusive dream trip to Montana and Yellowstone National Park. From gurgling geysers to lofty mountaintops, discover the perfect backdrop of your next family photo on this intimate journey through Big Sky Country. Expert guides can’t wait to introduce you and your family to the remarkable treasures of the wild, wild west as you explore pine-studded forests, raft the Yellowstone River and ride horseback across pristine meadows with a couple of bona fide cowboys. Each day, enjoy the finest in western hospitality and regional fare complemented with signature touches of inspired, thoughtful service. You and your family won’t soon forget this adventure of a lifetime and maybe you will even create new memories.

I invite you to fall in love with the picturesque scenes.  Spend six unforgettable days discovering the gems of Yellowstone National Park and Big Sky Country with your kids-turned-blooming-naturalists. And don’t worry, there’s plenty of time for soaking in a natural hot spring, too!

  • Hike along stream-side trails and meadows carpeted in flowers in Yellowstone’s quiet backcountry
  • Explore magical Upper Geyser Basin, home to the famed Old Faithful geyser and many other neat geothermal features
  • Seek out wildflowers and wildlife on a hike up to breathtaking Beehive Basin in Big Sky Country
  • Keep an eye out for elk and bison dotting the sagebrush-covered hills on a drive through Hayden Valley
  • Ride horseback high into the Absaroka mountains alongside a real-deal fourth-generation cowboy
  • Raft a playful stretch of the beautiful Yellowstone River under the towering Gallatin Mountain Range
  • Relax and recharge with a soak in a soothing hot spring-fed pool at Chico Hot Springs Resort
  • Zipline across the Gallatin River on an exhilarating trip that your family will never forget

Day 1 – Grotto Falls / Gallatin Canyon

Pick-up in Bozeman. Take a short hike through timber and meadows along Hyalite Creek to Grotto Falls. Enjoy a gourmet picnic lunch upon return from your adventure. Shuttle up Gallatin Canyon to our zip base and gear up for a zip line tour across the Gallatin River. Tonight’s dinner is at the 320 Steakhouse and Saloon.

About the 320 Guest Ranch

In the west, life has certainly gotten easier than it was in the early days, even at a Montana guest ranch. But some of the things that mattered most back then are still important today; like delicious, hearty meals, and the 320’s friendly, laid-back attitude.

Experience a 110-year-old homestead – reshaped into a Montana guest ranch. Relive the early western atmosphere and down-home hospitality – all in one big beautiful, historic property. The 320 Ranch offers exceptional cowboy comfort just south of Big Sky Ski Resort, where the pristine Gallatin River winds through sage and towering pines, and mountains rise against crystal blue skies.

Day 2 – Beehive Basin / Big Sky

Day 3 – Yellowstone National Park / Grand Prismatic / Old Faithful / Grand Canyon of Yellowstone

Shuttle to Yellowstone for a hike alongside Midway Geyser Basin to an unforgettable overlook of Grand Prismatic Hot Spring. A short drive away is Old Faithful and the Upper Geyser Basin, home to the largest collection of geysers in the world. Take some time to explore this area with your knowledgeable guide before a delicious picnic lunch. Transfer to Canyon over the Continental Divide, along the shoreline of Lake Yellowstone and through bison-dotted Hayden Valley. Embark on a backcountry hike along the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, ending at a viewpoint of the incredible 308-foot Lower Falls. This evening, enjoy dinner at Canyon Lodge.

About Canyon Lodge and Cabins

Featuring five lodge buildings built-in 2016, Canyon Lodge is situated in the center of the park a short distance away from the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River. The rustic accommodations allow for the opportunity to step back from technology and embrace lodging in the country’s oldest national park. Located on-site, you’ll find several restaurant options, a general store, and a visitor center for those looking to explore this sprawling accommodation.

Day 4 – Mammoth Hot Springs / Yellowstone River

Shuttle to the northern part of the park to the Mammoth Hot Springs area, where we’ll trek alongside orange, yellow, and white travertine terraces void of the boardwalk crowds. A short drive brings us to Gardiner where we enjoy lunch at the historic Roosevelt Arch. Load into rafts for a beautiful and splashy ride down the Yellowstone River. Drive through Paradise Valley to Chico Hot Springs Resort and Day Spa. Afterwards, enjoy dinner at a nearby local spot.
